  1. Pretty much. Listening to him tout Dr. Maroon as some combination of James Andrews and the Pope was pretty funny. He basically said as long as guys are passing tests under the wellness policy, it doesn't matter what else they may be doing. I was on the fence about getting HOF tickets but leaning against it now.
  2. Insane and spectacular fun. Lawler seems to replace Fuller early on, but who cares. This makes some of the early 80s concession stand brawls look like amateur hour and for those who hadn't seen much Memphis, changes the narrative about ECW being all that innovative in its time. Jarrett gets some nasty cuts and everyone is lucky if that's the most damage that came out of this. MEMPHIS! ***3/4
  3. Really fun, different match from everything else going on. Flynn's kicks were the story here with Sano selling them as destructive strikes. There was good work on the ground trading leg locks and working for armbars before Flynn went back to his kicks, with Sano capitalizing and catching an enzuigiri for a crab finish. ***3/4
  4. We join in progress our 2nd great Moondogs brawl of the month, and this is just as wild and crazy as the last one. Jarrett & Fuller do a promo setting up a no DQ match to follow. I'm allergic to dogs and not a huge fan, but becoming an unabashed lover of moondogs.
  5. Between this and the Rumble, January 1992 was a pretty historic and classic month. Incredible angle, facials and a fresh new delivery from Michaels, who shined on the mic right away in a way he never did as a face. Love tearing up the magazine to close.
  6. Nothing spectacular, but fun 6 man featuring Simmons as a pretty big powerhouse and Dustin looking like the best worker of the bunch. It looked like someone botched their timing with Eaton coming off the top. **3/4
  7. EDIT: Mixed up my comments here with the one from a week earlier. For a no DQ match, this felt a little more reserved compared to some of the earlier matches on the set. No complaints, but it reminded me of when you'd get stips in an ECW rematch even though there was nothing to suggest the stips mattered the first time around. Richard Lee hooks the leg for the pin. The faces take to the mic afterwards and Jarrett seems to lose his focus. The Moondogs are easily the highlight of the set so far. Might not be the best wrestling but these guys are just wild and a ton of fun and exactly what I want out of brawling heels. ***
  8. Flair is on fire here, with words for Hogan as we head into the Rumble. The big gold belt is snowed out. Just a classic Flair promo firing on all cylinders.
  9. This was a pretty big clash of styles. Lawler and Bob were both doing their own thing, to the point where it feels as though they're taking turns with their schtick and it just never clicked. Fun to see the pairing so I get why it made the set, but not exactly something you'd go back and rewatch. **1/4
  10. Hot Stuff touts Sting and Rick Steiner as former proteges and invites Barry Horowitz into First Family. Pretty simple stuff, but Eddie's always fun on the mic.
  11. Decent 6 man with a solid Jumbo/Kawada sequence early, followed by Kikuchi being treated like a rag doll and Kobashi having his own FIP segment thereafter. I didn't think this was anything too special, which by the standards of a '90s AJ six man tag means it was still one of the better matches of the month. Just not anything to write home about given the standards they'd set for themselves time and again. ***3/4
  12. I haven't seen much lucha and my concept of it was generally your stereotypical six man with bodies flying everywhere. This was not that, and it was awesome. The shoddy VQ and lack of audio didn't bring things down at all for me. Great action trading holds on the mat, with Casas bringing awesome facials to the table that even the VQ couldn't hide. Things slowed down in the second fall but it was still exciting to watch, especially being so new to the style. Cannot wait for more. ***3/4
  13. This was AWESOME. Easily one of my favorite matches of the month. Great work by both with Anderson selling his knee following a figure four and spinning toe hold, and Dustin selling his arm later on. I had no recollection of matches this hot and excellent being a regular part of WCW's weekly tv at the time, but it became pretty clear that while this may have been one of the better efforts, tv was just awesome during this period. Things wrap with a 6 way brawl the Dangerous Alliance feud continues, and the lack of a finish isn't a sore spot at all. ****
  14. Paul E has words for Sting and he isn't kidding around -- calling back to Magnum TA and Sting facing the same fate. Rude also delivers his standard quick promo on Sting and Steamboat, which is also awesome. Really fun, quick mic work.
  15. This was just awesome and barely a few minutes. The Moondogs manage to bump and effectively sell for the faces while still looking like absolute trashbag monsters, and both bleed pretty quickly as well. This had me stoked for more 'dogs action and the month would not disappoint at all.
  16. Savage is aiming to win the Rumble but is hot for Jake and won't lose sight of that come the big day. Liz is absolutely best seen but not heard from.
  17. Fujinami's dropkicks looked great even if the match itself was far from a world title classic. Choshu certainly went over strong at the end with the lariats, though it felt a little lacking in the drama / high stakes department for an IWGP title change. Ichi Ni San Da! Can't forget who counts here. ***
  18. Fun way to kick off the '92 yearbook. All four worked pretty hard, with Sting putting forth more effort than usual. Some nice double team moves by the Steiners while Muta took a nice beating during the heat segment. I haven't rewatched the Hase/Sasaki match in forever, and while I know that had more high spots and a greater variety of impressive ones, this felt more cohesive. ***1/4
  19. If footage is that hard to come by, maybe a collection of Patera & a couple others from that era for whom footage is similarly lacking? "The Forgotten Few" or some nonsense like that where availability dictates a broader there.
  20. Okay. I think you're leaving out the fact that they were presenting major league quality national television, and the only brand doing so. The presentation and packaging made their product look head and shoulders above what everyone else was doing and I'd contend that these factors were as equally responsible for any house shows not drawn on the back of Hogan up to a certain point. Its all well and good to want to give credit to the booking and wrestlers, but sometimes the box sells.
  21. Time for a Patera set. I currently have no interest in the AWA set but would love to check out more Patera. I caught the tail end of his WWF run and have checked out a few other outings online, including the MOTY, but want to see the guts already.
  22. Loss's yearbook posts are some of the best things on this board. If no Flair avatar, perhaps Daniel Bryan with a thought bubble?
  23. Jerry, are you contending that these shows were loaded based on the names & reps of guys in the lineups down the road in their careers? Or is it based on going back and reviewing what was pushed on tv, in magazines, at earlier shows or other large mediums as draws? Not looking to be obstinate but I don't see it otherwise.
