Titans of Wrestling #41: WWF May - June 1981
SteveJRogers replied to Ricky Jackson's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Someone please Photoshop Parv onto a Basil Fawlty photo! -
Funny enough, as you guys are just getting to the start of Marcus Bagwell's run on WTBBP, they've pretty much have Bagwell pegged as being one of the worst ever as they are going through his American Males/Buff/nWo era. Be interesting to see at what point Bagwell stops progressing and just relies on his hated mimbo gimmick going forward.

Yup. Heathcliff strip debuts in 1973, Garfield in 1978. To be fair, their characters and worlds are vastily different enough that all you got are that they are both orange tabby cats.

I blame the WWE's horrendous writing for this. Same sort of thought process that relegated WWE Undisputed Champion Jericho to 4th place in his own feud behind Trips, Steph, and their pet poodle. Just awful garbage all around. When Miz cashed in Money in the Bank and won the title, it was a HUGE moment. CM Punk was butthurt that it wasn't him vs. Cena that year, but quite frankly, it shouldn't have been. Miz was far more over and entertaining at that point, and felt like a much bigger star. The CM Punk documentary, which was one of the best otherwise, made him look like a whiny asshole in that regard. Punk moaned about not getting the match, bashed Miz, etc. Miz, meanwhile, praised Punk on the same documentary. Like I said, Miz is a great spokesperson for the company and always shines in those segments. Even Daniel Bryan comes across as a smark douchebag when he's a talking head, but Miz is great. Reading this kind of hits as to why Miz has so much "X-Pac Heat." Its not so much that he isn't that good of a wrestler, or that he came from reality television, or that his character is too much of a smarmy asshole, its that he is the Wesley Crusher of the WWE! He is a real life Mary Sue type of character that is loathed in all genres of fiction.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
SteveJRogers replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
That didn't happen on TV did it? Is there a reason Dave wrote Kamala's name as the original gimmick's name? Heh, who would have thought Meltzer started that hipster smark thing of referring to someone not by their WWF name (though IIRC, the i was changed to an a before Harris signed with the WWF) but their prior names! -

Wiki sez, that the gimmick was stopped due to a potential lawsuit by Marvel, the comic book may have been part of the settlement. -

Oddly enough, that might have explained the gimmick! -

The very popular 1990s Spidey cartoon didn't start until 1994 and it had been about 4 years since the last time Spidey had a cartoon in first run production. My best guess is Spider-Man was hotter than ever on the comic racks in 1991 as the Todd MacFarlane "adjectiveless" Spidey title launched with great fanfare the previous year. And if memory serves, I think rumors of a James Cameron helmed big budget movie were very loud at that particular pint in time. -
Also, to be fair to Cesaro, despite what Vince stated, and despite this never hitting the dirt sheets as a possibility, I wonder if Brock's limited schedule fucked up the whole idea that Cesaro would be the pawn/gatekeeper in terms of someone a Cena/Reigns/whomever would have to go through to get to Brock, and then turn once realizing he was being used as a patsy. I know we are dealing with ADD booking, but I wonder if that ever was an actual plan, but got scrapped due to how little both Heyman and Brock would be factoring into the main event storylines after defeating Cena at SummerSlam?
-
Not to mention that the whole point of aligning with Heyman and doing the booking that way was to get legit heel heat on a guy that the fans still wanted to cheer. Short of going back to SES "conversion" pledges during promos, Punk was not going to get strong heel heat simply because he was attacking faces instead of heels.

Well, they did release a DVD of post-Raw stuff earlier this year! Not sure if I feel the same though, unless it was a match, like the never filmed Hell in a Cell that was on a post-Raw. Though I do think any of the Free For Alls/Heats/Internet Exclusive Pre-shows and whatever else that had matches on them leading into that night's PPV event should be added to the PPVs section, I mean they are doing it now with everything since WrestleMania, so why not.

CM Punk on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling
SteveJRogers replied to goodhelmet's topic in Publications and Podcasts
To be fair Will, how is Bill different than someone, always seemingly finding something unkind about to say about Triple H, John Cena or Shawn Michaels? At the end of the day knowing how someone feeling in general will always give anything said an extra biting edge, even if its meant in a non mean spirited way. -
He deserves some bashing by wrestling fans given his loud and frequent criticisms of Rock, Brock, Taker and other part-timers "who won't be there on Monday" given he hasn't done anything to earn a spot in UFC. Personally, I don't give a damn. I watched Brock in UFC because of his amateur credentials, freak athleticism and most of all because I was a wrestling fan and wanted to see what he could do. I'll probably watch Punk in UFC because I'm a wrestling fan and want to see what this former wrestling headliner does. Just makes all of his promotional efforts over the last couple weeks and, unfortunately, some of his legit issues with WWE seem like nothing but promotional tactics when he's playing the same game to sell himself here. Yeah I wont say what I personally think of the guy but what he said was completely uncalled for with Colt. The biggest thing that irritated me about him was that promo on Raw where he slagged off Sammartino & Hogan about there run on top and their supposed easy scheduele. Well for one thing it was alot tougher back then to get people to leave their spot and he obviously forgets what while you never had PPVs or weekly Raws you did have the champion defending all around the country at House Shows which is what Raw would have been like then so its not as if they had a easy scheduel. Plus if he really believes he would have stopped either of Sammartino or Hogans run back then well he is one dilusional bastard because if he had been there in his prime he would have never even been considered close to winning the belt. You understand that Punk was cutting a promo right? To be fair, neither did Superstar Billy Graham, who was mentioned in the same promo!

Probably wasn't meant to go up this soon after it's DVD/BluRay release.
-
Probably the Triple H led DX from 98-99?
-
SNS Radio Network's crew, especially Beyond The Bell history podcast are an entertaining bunch as well.

Someone please delete that above, I didn't mean to quote Bill, and I can't edit out...damn mobile Safari... ANYWAY, I've dogged them here about their opinions on certain wrestlers, and laconic attitudes about certain things, but What A Maneuver from OnTheStick.com is a good rewatch podcast of mid-1990s WWF/WCW. Earth-2.net's A Cure For The Common Podcast is also a good 90s rewatch (1997 WWF), if only it wasn't a once a month release schedule!
-
I agree. They also should have been putting up all those HHH sitdowns with Cole that were on .com (may still be, haven't really been following), and every other new piece of video that they produce. Okay, YA GOT YOUR WISH! There is a bunch of YouTube content from November, the only regular show from the channel that is in the group I saw is Inbox, in the Originals programming under the "show" title As Seen On YouTube.
-
Since it was a Beyond The Ring extra, I'm guess its a bonus feature on the Triple H doc, or something that got cut from it.
-
Yes, it was.

CM Punk on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling

Then why did it take until Thanksgiving, and not around a month ago when the legal mess was finally sorted out? Hell, my only beef with Punk in all of this was his radio slience since it started. If Colt is as business first as you say, he'd have Punk on right away for a few minute "shit is going down right now, respect my fucking privacy" or at various points during the spring/summer and fall. -

Considering Colt's reaction to Foley's using the "landed" term, I'd say Colt has heard that same reaction that you are saying often this weekend. -
Might be the first time, besides a PPV week, that major shit has gone down the day AFTER PTBN's Main Event recorded and aired for their bi-weekly look at the wrestling news landscape!

Also, the guy is like Kevin Smith, above the fray popping in for a pet project. Unless he does plan on churning out regular content. -

That generally happens when you create your own character for a company, or are in the middle of a long run and getting jerked around because editorial demands you do tie-ins with events. There aren't any job health hazzard (well carpal tunnel for art related chores), and even though he probably won't need it, there are organzations out there set up to help down on their luck and destitute creators (going back to the late 1970s). It might be as insane, insular and carny like, but NOT even close to the same in terms of toxic work environments!
