Where the Big Boys Play #67 - Halloween Havoc 91
SteveJRogers replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I don't know why its hitting me now, when there have been shows already since March of 1991 but, it is kind of weird to think that at this point in time, WCW has less than 10 years to go in existence. -
He falls under the "fell into it" category.

Unless PodCastOne is a cash cow, and laying out terrestial or satilite money for its acts, who I imagine are all wealthy off of day jobs, I'd say no.

The Trial Of Eric Bischoff (Podcast Question)
SteveJRogers replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'd agree with the esteemed Brit on this one. The defendant, while an egomaniac, was a contributing factor in what drove WCW into their downward spiral from both a creative standpoint and behind the scenes, he doesn't deserve all the blame for what would be the death of the company. Its like any decent coach or general manager in sports, or director in the entertainment parlance, the in-between guy (ownership/studio and players/cast & crew) is always going to get way too much credit for the good times, and shoulder way too much of the blame for the bad ones. Oh sure you can blame them, and I'll use Bischoff specific ones, for playing favorites, being mean spirited, spending money frivolously because he could, not knowing what he had in certain talent and letting them go, etc, but they were an important part of the puzzle that got them to the top in the first place. -
I'm watching PPVs from the late 2000s-early 2010s, and watching the performances of LayCool and something struck me as funny. OF COURSE I know they are just characters, but considering how much of the real Mark Calaway has been in the Undertaker character since the American Badass days, it seems odd to picture Undertaker with Michelle McCool's WWE "mean cool girls" personae. Another seemingly incongruous IRL couple of wrestling characters that comes to mind would be Beth Phoenix and Edge from his Christian tag team days up to his turn and change towards The Rated R Superstar in 2004. But then again, Beth's on screen character was connected to Santino, so who knows!

LOL! Welp, to be fair, the Yankees didn't really get going until 1994....

Meh. You can tag the New York Yankees as the "Team of the 1990s" even though their run of World Series appearances goes through 2003. Team of the 1970s Steelers won their last Super Bowl in the 1980 calendar year, and while Roger Staubach and Ken Stabler were long gone, their rivals Cowboys and Raiders put in Super Bowl caliber (Raiders made, and won a Super Bowl, Cowboys got upended by the burgeoning 49ner 1980s dynasty) seasons in the early days of the 1980s. Speaking of the 1980s 49ners, they also got Montana's final ring in the year 1990, and by 1993, enough of that team was still in tact, you can put that championship on the Team of the 1980s ledger. Plus its not THAT much of a spillover of what, a year and three months? I'd see your point if Monday Nitro was still chugging along in 2004-2005, when the decade's feel in culture was settling in.

Don't forget that he also appears to take the IWC's "side" on many issues, such as who is deserving of pushes.
-
That wasn't because Kofi botched a finish and caused Orton to break character by calling him "STUPID" in the ring?

Will it just be replays of the ones that were released on DVD in the last few years or are there new episodes? They only did the Shawn-Bret one. I thought there was an Austin-McMahon one, too. You must be thinking of the VHS covering the epic storyline of 98-99.

FWIW, both Shawn-Bret and that Top 25 Rivalries are on the network as part of Beyond The Ring series.

I can see where Dave is coming from, but he's still way off. He's remembering Austin doing goofy shit like filling Vince's limo with cement, and driving beer trucks and Zamboni machines into arenas. But, (A. That's still not as goofy as some of the stuff Ambrose is doing, and (B. Those aren't the reason Austin got over in the first place (nor are they the reason Ambrose is so over). Not to mention, the "goofy shit" was every so often, and second it was done more so as a way of Austin getting over someone that should have been "untouchable" in Vince, since Austin beating the holy hell out of him every week would have gotten tedious and hard to accept Austin as a face (though considering the fanbase of the era, maybe not) constantly beating up a guy that couldn't retaliate physically on a consistent basis. Also, the "comedic" side of Austin (especially the WHATS) didn't really get going until his heel turn. By that time Austin was clearly enjoying himself as he was doing his schtick and it was clear that his character had lost a lot of his more serious edge. A lot of the things Austin did that were perceived as being funny before the heel turn can be subverted, or maybe not as its still comes off as funny, once you realize that Austin is deadly serious 100% of the time that he is cutting a promo or whatever bit he was doing (okay, he does slip out of character every so often, which was hard to do since he couldn't hide character breaking moments). He was meant to be literally a STONE COLD killer during that entire run. Not sure if you can say that about "The Lunatic Fringe" unless you further the comparisons with the Heath Ledger Joker from The Dark Knight in terms of a sadistic enjoyment of what he is doing.

Is it any better than some viral social media fund and awareness raising drive? Though yes the pink products is over the top, plus Komen has been under fire lately for apparantly not keeping with the liberal pro-choice agenda.

I saw a bit on a FB group where Austin merch is getting a major push. I'd just take it as the same reason Austin is prominent on the cover of that Best of After Raw DVD that came out this past spring. One of the most over acts in company history is showing no signs of a waning popularity, especially with the success of his post wrestling career with reality competition shows and podcasts and no public crap of any kind (be it simply embarrassing or flat out illegal/immoral) in his private life since bottoming out in 2002. The iron is still as red hot as ever, so why not strike it with a little more vigor than you would with other former superstars/Legend Contracted superstars merch.

People have been trying to start that rumor since SummerSlam. OH MY GOD A WRESTLER IS RED AND SWEATY HE'S GOING TO DIE IN THE RING! As if the hand wringers of the internet are more alert than WWE's doctors. Can you blame them though with Ultimate Warrior passing of heart attack hours after looking beat red and winded while making one last promo on Raw?

The Conquistadors - Did they ever win a match on tape?
SteveJRogers replied to W2BTD's topic in Pro Wrestling
They won the tag titles twice in 2000! ;p -
A little history from a PDF document trying to save the original from demolition in the last decade: http://www.azhistory.net/doc/pmsg/pmsg072005.pdf It does mention it being constructed in 1929, which puts it in line with the first, well really third, MSG and the original Boston Garden, but I don't see any mention of Tex Richard, MSG's owner and developer being a driving force behind it, but there is this on page 8: Also, it would appear that it was too small for anything other than boxing, wrestling or concerts, so it did not become the original home of the basketball Phoenix Suns when they joined the NBA in the very late 1960s.

Re: Phoenix, AZ's MSG back in the 1963 Look Back in Episode 1 (long story to why I haven't gotten to it until now) MSG's second most prominent historic location, for sports, entertainment and political and social events anyway, was the building between 49th & 50th along 8th Avenue in NYC from 1925 through 1968 (replaced by the current MSG down between 31st & 33rd and 7th & 8th Ave). When it replaced the previous building, which was literally next to Madison Square Park, the new owner and developer had envisioned creating MSGs throughout the country, in fact The Boston Garden itself was part of this plan, hence The Garden in Beantown's fabled arena. I'd have to look further into it, but I'd imagine that is what this MSG in Phoenix was a part of.

Could have sworn CRZ (or maybe it was Keith) got KICK WHAM STUNNER from something Austin said himself about the "at anytime" nature of the Stunner. Could also be in part from JR's frequent over emphasis of the move with "STUNNER! STUNNER! STONE COLD! STONE COLD!"

Chad, at least the Braves were in midst of a great race for the divison at that time with the Dodgers. Promoting an upcoming big series airing on same station as the show you are watching seems logical. Though I can see wrestling fans getting turned off in the way baseball/football fans LOATHE FOX's self promotion tactics, I don't think this was a bad thing for WCW to do.

I know they are covered for in this very forum, but no love for Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino?
