I would hesitate to put that match on YouTube since it was on the WWE Lawler DVD. -

There's also a really great 3 disc set that 70's TV.com put out that covers the whole series. -

It was the whole trademark of the WWE style. You can watch any match from 2017 WWE and not only are they interchangeable but also dysfunctional. Imagine if every pop song went straight to the chorus. -
Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?
peachchaos replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
You could argue that goc is doing more to preserve the history of Tennessee wrestling than the Jarretts currently. The Continental thread and his youtube uploads should be considered a cornerstone of this community. Not that he gives a fuck. I'm just saying. -

Jerry Lawler vs. Bill Dundee - The best sought
peachchaos replied to thebrainfollower's topic in Pro Wrestling
This is a comp I've been wanting to make for years. I could probably put something together tonight, but honestly the best intro for new fans would just be the episode of TV hyping the 83 LLT and then the arena match. -
What are some Judy Martin singles worth checking out?
-
Does Jumping Bomb Angels vs Glamour Girls even have a rival for best WWF tag series of the 80's?
-
I mean regardless if matches happened there that qualify as the Best of the 80s they should be counted. I wholeheartedly agree, it's just that the few St. Louis matches that were being mentioned were not exactly Kerry-Flair.
-
FWIW if anyone is completely insane they can view the Flair-Brody rematches on Roy Lucier's channel. That's right, they met again in '84 and '85.
-
Can I toss in Pete's old adage that STL was not a territory, it was a "town"? I mean I'll watch anything with Jerry Blackwell but idk about those picks.
-
Houston is definitely worth including. Not sure if there's anything on this level for St. Louis or Canada necessarily.

Thanks, I meant the one from the Horsemen DVD not the one that aired in Japan.

This is something I've been thinking about while reading through this classic old thread. For years, Jeff Bowdren's list of 80's matches was the defining list among tape traders. Well, we've come a long way baby together over the past decade. Throughout the DVDVR Best of the 80's project, we've been able to formulate a consensus on this material. Even as more and more footage becomes available, I still believe we well on our way to coming up with the definitive "Best Matches of the 1980's" at this point. With the Wrestling Matches Hall of Fame starting up, it seems like perfect timing to get everyone's feedback on the 1980's results. With nominations and voting closed for a good number of sets, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the "Top 20" matches from all the sets. Obviously, results aren't in for Puerto Rico and Portland and we may not see any new sets moving forward. I went ahead and made some predictions (okay, okay, they're just personal picks). Anyway, here are the #1 and #2 winners from each promotion in chronological order. First place winners are in red. Second place winners in blue. Andre the Giant vs. Stan Hansen (NJPW 9/23/81) Jerry Lawler vs. Bill Dundee (Loser Leaves Town) (CWA 6/6/83) The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Von Erichs (WCCW 7/4/83) MS-1 vs. Sangre Chicana (CMLL 9/23/83) 5-on-5 Gauntlet Challenge (NJPW 4/19/84) Sgt Slaughter vs. Iron Sheik (WWF 6/16/84) Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs. Super Tiger (UWF 12/05/84) Terry Gordy vs. Killer Khan (Texas Death Match; Special Guest Referee, Kerry Von Erich) (WCCW 11/22/84) Ted DiBiase vs. Hacksaw Duggan (No DQ, Loser Leaves Town, Coal Miner's Glove on a Poll, Tuxedo, Cage match) (Mid-South 3/22/85) Jerry Lawler vs. Bill Dundee (No DQ, Loser Leaves Town) (CWA 12/30/85) Buddy Rose & Doug Somers vs. Midnight Rockers (AWA 8/30/86) Espanto Jr. vs. El Hijo Del Santo (Mask vs. Mask) (CMLL 8/31/86) Nick Bockwinkel vs. Curt Hennig (AWA 11/21/86) Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage (WWF 3/29/87) Dick Murdoch vs. Barry Windham (UWF 7/11/87) Nobuhiko Takada vs. Akira Maeda (UWF 11/10/88) Genichiro Tenryu & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Stan Hansen & Terry Gordy (AJPW 12/16/88) Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Genichiro Tenryu (AJPW 6/5/89) My picks for the remaining promotions: Portland: Buddy Rose vs. Rick Martel (2/3 falls) (PNW 4/26/80) Rip Oliver, The Assassin & Dynamite Kid vs. Curt Hennig, Billy Jack & Buddy Rose (6/25/83) Puerto Rico: Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen (Cage Match) (WWC 3/14/87) Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen (2/28/87) GCW: Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer (Cage Match) (GCW 10/23/83) Ole Anderson vs. Paul Ellering (Cage Match) (GCW 10/23/83) CWF: Barry Windham vs. Ron Bass (CWF 11/19/83) Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham (CWF Battle of the Belts II 2/14/86) JCP: Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (NWA 3/18/89) Ric Flair vs. Ricky Morton (Cage Match) (NWA 7/05/86) AJW: Lioness Asuka v. Jaguar Yokota (AJW 8/22/85) Chigusa Nagoya v. Lioness Asuka (AJW 2/26/87)

Austin went into detail on one of his podcasts that he did with Jim Johnston (it's worth a listen for his reasoning behind many of his themes). Basically, this all started when Austin approached Johnston with a copy of Bulls on Parade by Rage Against The Machine as a template for his new theme song. It took Johnston eight hours to finalise what we know today, and those glass shatters were only added in at the end of production. Johnston basically wanted a noise that captured an "oh shit!" from the crowd and thought glass shattering evoked that sense of something bad happening. It's actually an amalgam of three different noises: glass shattering, a car crash and an explosion. You can't really hear the other two noises due to the higher frequency of the glass shattering. This is all incredibly interesting but now I'll never be able to shake the awesomeness that could have been Austin coming out to Rage every Monday. Beautiful People was also a really good fit for the RAW intro.

Ahhhh, how could I forget this. Easily my favorite theme ever. Creation - Spinning Toe Hold

Some of the earliest entrance themes to be used are still the greatest. Anytime the Freebirds come out to Skynyrd on WTBS gets an instant pop from me. Ditto Queen and the Junkyard Dog around the same time. Lawler's entrance when he returns at the end of 1980 and comes up through the stage to Strauss followed by the Star Wars theme is maybe my favorite entrance ever? Lawler also used the Rocky theme which was fantastic. One that I cannot stand is Dr. Death coming out to Born in the USA, which is a lame song (not to mention it's complete satire). Road Warriors + Iron Man was a perfect fit. ECW had so many perfect fits as well. Although I have to say, the fact that the music was always so good really emphasized how great of an entrance the Dudleys had WITHOUT any music. Similar effect in the 80's when Andre never used music. The stir of the crowd was enough atmosphere. I...can't take any of the songs created by the WWE or WCW seriously tbh.
