  1. Scott Keith is also known for his star ratings. Are there any other big name journalists like Meltzer who have ever bothered? Did Wade Keller ever rate matches?

  3. CH Wrestle 77 is gone.
  4. Branching off from the Dave Meltzer thread here, I'd like to entertain the idea of gathering a "critical consensus" for star ratings. There are plenty of voices beyond Big Dave on the web, but I'm not sure there are enough who provide consistent reviews to make this feasible. Use this thread to play around with the concept and let's gather some influential names who would be worthy of inclusion.

  7. Yeah, no argument there. 9 was a total stinker.
  8. Jerry Lawler vs. Kimala No Disqualification Match June 7 1982 Memphis, TN I believe this is the correct date but I could be wrong. This showed up on Rick Crane's "Jerry Lawler: Revamped and Expanded" 4 disc set. We get about 8 minutes of action and oh boy is it wild and woolly. These two had a match a few weeks prior that ended in the DQ so with the stip they can go balls out. Lawler makes his superman comeback pretty early in the game, but he can't keep the beast down long enough to win inside the ring, so the fight spills to the floor where they find lots of plunder. The finish is a callback to the Lawler-Funk match, with Jerry slowly becoming the king of the No DQ dogfight. Highly enjoyable.
  9. Actually, the 1992 Royal Rumble match is not a bad pick for this. We've all watched it a zillion times and it never gets old. It's the most famous NWA Champion running down the entire WWF roster. You get to see all the big names of the era basically in one sitting. Not only is it an amazing match but a memorable moment with Flair winning the title and Heenan stanning for him the entire time. If this isn't a five star match you really have no soul. Savage-Warrior is the runner-up.
  10. Except that 10 was a resounding success and a huge part of that is the closing moments of the show. The match was nothing, but Bret being cemented as the Ace with Owen in the shadows is flawless booking.
  11. I look at Pat Patterson as more of an agent than a booker. His hallmark is laying out matches and putting together finishes. He does have the Royal Rumble and Iron Man Match concepts, however.
  12. George Scott deserves a mention for bringing in Johnny Valentine and freshening up the Mid Atlantic territory which had been strictly tag wrestling. Gave the next generation of stars their first chance to shine and took JCP into Canada. Unfortunately we don't get to see much of the really famous stuff.
  13. Bix's praise for Peña felt like a post in this thread when I listened to it. Here's a list of everyone mentioned so far: Giant Baba Bill Watts Paul Heyman Riki Choshu Gabe Sapolsky Chris Kreski Vince McMahon Gary Hart Dusty Rhodes Mike Quakenbush Adam Pearce Jerry Jarrett Dutch Mantell Scott D'amore Eddie Graham Gedo Pat Patterson Antonio Peña Mark Dallas (best current booker?)

  15. Really the best fit for Bailey & Sasha would be a Woman's Tag Division. They could start up the division and hold the titles for a year and then work towards a feud.
  16. Tag match was the highlight of the show. Cesaro and Sheamus should be in the main event scene. I'd say both of the headline matches missed their mark by quite a large margin. Cena looked old and since he was clearly carrying Reigns it was not a flattering look for either guy. Now twice I've been extremely pumped to see someone give Brock a run for his money (a few months ago it was with Joe) and both the match and result both fell way short.
  17. Gentlemen, may I direct you to the Village Green Preservation Society? I would strongly suggest participating in the 1979-1989 project.

  19. I have trouble keeping Jarrett's ideas separate from Lawler's. I know they would switch off every six months, but are these periods documented anywhere?
  20. If Dave Taylor can't make this thread then Horowitz is surely out of contention too. Both totally capable workers. I think names like Adam Bomb and Maxx Payne are closer to the thread title at heart. I would pop huge for Techno Team 2000 whenever they showed up in WWF. And for years I couldn't understand why High Voltage weren't pushed to the moon on Nitro.
  21. Glad you're okay! I can't imagine what your life has been like for the past few weeks.
  22. There were a few Bret Hart Triple Threat matches on the Attitude Era Unreleased DVD. The best one was from early '97 at the SkyDome w/ Bret, Shawn, and Sid.
  23. Also, while the action between Hart and Lawler is brief, maybe five minutes only, it's the only chance we have to see Lawler in that kind of a Memphis brawl in New York. It's also a great chance to see the pissed off Bret Hart that would come back in the Diesel feud and eventually in his heel run. Even the ending of the match foreshadows WM13. It's the kind of career-long storytelling only Bret did and it's absolutely flawless in it's execution.
