  2. I just watched the Ted-Savage stuff last week and can confirm it is very, very solid work all around. I think the MSG Cage is really solid and the WrestleFest match is off the charts (4*). Never seen a Demolition match that didn't bore me to tears or just annoy the piss out of me. But I'll give them their fair shake and watch the Rockers, Bulldogs, and Hart stuff tonight.
  3. He murdered two great performers and their son and they discovered his brain was mush from in-ring abuse. Directly related to wrestling.
  4. Stampede Wrestling presents Wrestling At The Corral July 29, 1983 at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta The show opens with a Jerry Blackwell promo. He is holding the NWA Stampede International Tag Team title belts and Jimmy Hart's big bag of cash. He puts himself over as professional wrestling's one true Crusher and says he has almost succeeded in destroying the Hart Family. With the help of Jimmy Hart, they have taken over $20,000 worth of Stu's hard-earned money and used it to purchase the tag team titles from The Mad Tongans. He notes that he short-changed the Tongans and only paid them $5000 and kept the other $15K for himself! Now, his sights are set on the "nugget", Bret Hart. Blackwell says tonight he's gonna find Hart and flush him down the drain. 1. Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid vs. The Tokyo Hurricanes (Hiro Saito & Shunji Takano w/ KY Wakamatsu) Just a wildly entertaining back-and-forth, fast paced match with a lot of heat on the heels and Wakamatsu. Winners - The Tokyo Hurricanes @ 11:08 with a rocket launcher after Davey and Dynamite collided by accident and Dynamite was pinned. Post match, Ed Whalen interviews both Dynamite and Davey Boy, with Billington looking visibly upset about the loss. He says the Dynamite Kid simply does not lose matches and he especially does not get pinned in the middle of the ring. He says they've had some problems with the Hurricanes cheating to win, but tonight it was Davey who caused them the match. Dynamite storms off and Davey is a bit confused. Next, a special video presentation (courtesy of CWA): Commercials. "Canada's Greatest Athelete" Gene Kiniski is out to announce the debut of "Pitbull" Kerry Brown. Whalen puts Brown over as one of the top free agents in wrestling, but Brown isn't into accepting compliments, he'll let the other wrestlers talk the talk while he walks the walk. He's out to hurt people and win gold. Tonight, we'll see an exhibition series as Kerry runs the gauntlet against three different competitors as a callback to the 1960's Bulldog Brower exhibitions. 2. "Pitbull" Brown Exhibitions (Kerry Brown Gauntlet Match) First out is Hubert Gallant, who tries his best but just can't hang with Kerry on the mat. Kerry pins him quickly. Out next is Junji Hirata, who is able to work with Brown on the mat but can't match up to his strength. Kerry ends up throwing him out of the ring for a count out. Then, big Jerry Novak (Bounty Hunter #2) comes out and immediately over powers Brown and works him over a bit. Eventually, Kerry is able to come back working some holds and ends up making Novak submit with a mean armbar. Winner - Kerry Brown @ 12:12 A video airs of recent Dino Bravo highlights against Harley Race and Bret Hart, set to Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf". Commercials. Stu Hart, Bret Hart, and Jim Neidhart talk in a pre-taped segment. Stu says Blackwell can throw his money around where ever he wants, but you simply cannot buy wrestling titles, you have to earn them. He says The Mad Tongans will be officially recognized as tag champions until they lose the title in the ring. Tonight, he's gonna send Bret and The Anvil to rid Stampede of Blackwell once and for all and get the physical belts back, because in no world is Jerry Blackwell fit to be a wrestling champion. Ed Whalen announces a huge match for the 8/25 Supercard in Vancouver, as it will be Hulk Hogan from the AWA taking on the insane Abdullah the Butcher in a match where there will be no disqualifications! 3. Abdullah the Butcher vs. Bad News Allen (taped 10/8/82, footage courtesy of New Japan Pro Wrestling) Winner - DDQ @ 4:00 "The Great Gama" Gama Singh is out next for a live promo. He says he has been searching the world over for a partner who can match his skill in the ring. He introduces his new tag team partner, The Russian Assassin (Frank Morell). 4. The Invaders vs. Gama Singh & The Russian Assassin Winners - The Invaders @ 6:34 when Invader 1 pinned the Russian Assassin after a double team move. Afterwards, Gama is just beside himself. He berates the Assassin but gets too physical and the Assassin puts him down with a big powerslam. Commercials. Davey Boy Smith and the Dynamite Kid are backstage for an interview. Davey says earlier tonight was all his fault and he won't make that mistake again. They're a team and that means they both have to be 100% and watch each other's back. From now on, there won't be any more miscommunication and the wrestling world will soon know the team of Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith - THE BRITISH BULLDOGS - as the Best Tag Team in the World. "Crusher" Jerry Blackwell and Two Men in Black Ski Masks come out to ringside with the tag team title belts and Jimmy Hart's big bag of money. Blackwell says he's not playing Stu Hart's game. He declares himself the tag team champions and says if the Harts want the belts so bad, he'll put them up in a handicapped match, 3-on-2. Stu Hart comes to ringside. He says there will be a handicapped match, and the Harts will get the tag team titles and the money back, but it won't be a 3-on-2 handicapped match, it will be 2-on-1, and Blackwell is the one. In the ring, the Two Men in Black Ski Masks unmask as Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart! They proceed to double team Blackwell, as Stu Hart goes nuts and tells Whalen to ring the bell and start the match. 5. 2-on-1 Handicapped Match: Jerry Blackwell vs. Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart Winners - Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart @ 8:00 when Neidhart pinned Blackwell. Post-match, the Bounty Hunters come out to help Jerry Blackwell, but are stopped in the aisle by The Invaders! Stu Hart gets in the ring and slaps Jerry Blackwell! Stu gets the tag titles and holds up the big bag of cash as the crowd goes wild. We close the show with a short pre-taped interview from Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie.
  5. Summer School at The Dungeon (Marty Oates) CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AT WORLD FAMOUS WRESTLING SCHOOL Calgary, AB - New trainees have begun working hard in preparation of making their professional debuts in the sport of wrestling. Trainers Mr. Hito and Stu Hart are busy fine tuning the soon-to-be-rookies, among them a budding youth, Marty Oates (pictured above). Hart had strong words and paid the young athlete many compliments, adding he hopes to keep Oates around as part of the Stampede roster throughout the year. Summer training extends even to the more experienced wrestlers at the Dungeon school. Canadian native, Kerry Brown (pictured below), a four year veteran, has returned to Calgary in hopes of training to one day hold the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Championship. First, he has to survive Stu Hart. (Kerry Brown)

  13. Stampede Wrestling presents Wrestling At The Corral July 22, 1983 at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta The show opens with the closing moments of Dino Bravo challenging Harley Race for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship a few nights ago in Vancouver. Race then cuts a promo that was taped backstage after the match. He puts Bravo over strong but says this is just another example of why he is the one and only World Champion. 1. Dynamite Kid vs. Hiro Saito w/ KY Wakamatsu Winner - Dynamite Kid @ 7:34 with a diving headbutt. After the match, Shunji Takano and KY Wakamatsu storm the ring and attack Dynamite with a kendo stick. Davey Boy Smith makes the save for his partner and it's clear the issues between the two teams have not been settled. Ed Whalen introduces the NWA International Tag Team Champions The Dungeon Masters, Jim Neidhart & Mr. Hito for an interview. Neidhart says they're ready to take on all comers, but tonight they have an open challenge. They don't appreciate what's been going on with all the "outsiders" from different promotions attacking members of the Hart family. So tonight, they're calling out the Two Men in Black Ski Masks! Out comes Jerry Blackwell, still holding Jimmy Hart's big bag of money. Blackwell says its stupid for Neidhart to call out two masked men since he has no idea what could be hiding under those masks. Two guys wearing ski masks come out to stand by Blackwell, but as Neidhart and Hito are distracted by this, two other men in black ski masks jump them from behind! Blackwell and his associates leave, and after the two men in the ring beat down Hito and Neidhart sufficiently, they unmask: it's the Mad Tongans! Commericals. 2. Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie vs. Mike Hammer The match never gets started, as Stomper storms out and immediately bloodies Hammer with his chain, drawing a DQ. He gives him a top rope double stomp for good measure. Winner - Mike Hammer by DQ @ 0:00 Gouldie cuts a promo on Wahoo McDaniel and says he's coming for Bret Hart's North American title. 3. NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship: The Cobra© vs. Junji Hurata Winner - The Cobra @ 12:45 with a moonsault. Commercials. Curt Hennig cuts a promo taped after the show in Vancouver. He says Bret got the best of him on that night, so he's gonna hit the road, train hard, tour the world, and come back better than ever in a few months and take that belt from him. We then see highlights of the Bret Hart-Curt Hennig match for the NWA Stampede North American Heavyweight Championship set to Michael Jackson's "Beat It". "Canada's Greatest Athlete" Gene Kiniski interviews Dino Bravo about his failed attempt at winning the NWA World title. Bravo humbles himself and says he is just happy to get a shot at the title and to be in the ring with an athlete the caliber of Harley Race. Bret Hart comes out with his NWA Stampede title and says he saw Bravo's match with Race and was impressed, so anytime Bravo wants a shot at his belt, he's got it. They shake hands. 4. NWA Stampede International Tag Team Championship: The Dungeon Masters© vs. The Mad Tongans Winners & New NWA Stampede International Tag Team Champions - The Mad Tongans @ 13:49 when King Tonga pinned Mr. Hito. After the match, which was a complete mauling, Neidhart and Hito are basically dead in the ring. Jerry Blackwell comes out and pulls some money out of his bag and hands it to the Tongans. In exchange, they give Blackwell the NWA Stampede tag titles. Blackwell holds both belts high in the air to end the show as Ed Whalen wonders what this means for the future of Stampede Wrestling. After the show goes off the air, Bret Hart comes out and says he's had enough of Blackwell and this is the final straw. He brings out the Invaders from Puerto Rico to be his partners for a special 6 man tag match. 5. Dark Match Main Event: Bret Hart & The Invaders vs. Jerry Blackwell & The Bounty Hunters Winners - Bret Hart & The Invaders @ 16:12 when Bret pinned Bounty Hunter #2.

  16. posted 11:11PM 3/14/2007 by Keith Scott The SmarT 24/7 Rant for NWA Stampede Wrestling’s “Supercard in Vancouver” – July 21, 1983 - Oh my. I've been waiting forever for this territory and era to debut on 24/7. - Taped from Vancouver, BC. - A bit of an infamous show right here, as this was the first super show the promotion ran after the Big Wrestling Shake-Up of 1983, where all the major promoters came together and drafted talent to each territory. It’s also the first card booked by Bruce Hart, who became notorious for the poor business decisions he made in the early stages of running the company. - Case-in-point: This show. You see, Bruce had advertised a main event featuring NWA World Champion Harley Race defending against WWF’s Andre the Giant. Sounds great on paper, right? Only problem is Bruce forgot to clear the booking with Vince McMahon. So when Andre didn’t make the event, Bruce shoehorned local favorite Dino Bravo (a face in Vancouver, but a tweener working a mobster gimmick in Stampede) into the title match, putting Race over strong and elevating Bravo to the main event picture in one fell swoop. For all his bad money-losing choices on the business end of things, Bruce was still rock solid when booking the in-ring product. - Bruiser Brody also no-showed this card, so Jerry Blackwell stepped up as Stan Hansen’s partner. The Invaders vs. Mike Hammer & David Morgan. The Invaders are of course on loan from Puerto Rico and debuting here in Stampede. Morgan and Hammer were a pretty solid job team for a few months before Hammer struck gold with the Dr. Blood gimmick and Morgan came to his own as a worker. This match isn’t much, but the jobbers put the heels over strong. *1/2 - Bruce Hart and Keith Hart are out to announce the changes to the main event and tag team title matches. After Bruce makes the announcement, they are jumped by 2 guys wearing black masks who I believe in kayfabe were sent by Jimmy Hart. NWA Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship: The Cobra vs. Matt Borne Oh man, this is where it’s at. Cobra is fresh off of winning the belt as a result of Bruce and Keith Hart leaving to actually work for Vancouver at this time. Matt Borne is fresh off of a big loss to Curt Hennig and both guys are being pushed strongly. JIP to about 12 minutes in. Just a great back-and-forth contest with Cobra gaining the advantage with his speed and eventually winning with a moonsault. Yeah, you want all of this. So ahead of its time. *** Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith vs. The Tokyo Hurricanes God, I love NWA 24/7. They’re not-quite the British Bulldogs yet, having only started team about a month prior. The Hurricanes of course are the Japanese heel stable of Stampede and they always put on decent matches. This isn’t nearly as good as it could be and they would have better matches later, but this is sort of their first big match so it has a screwy finish. This was pretty common in the 80’s, as they had to build the feud up to get people into the building for the next show. Bulldogs lose after Davey gets hit with a kendo stick. Short but sweet.** - Stu Hart announces that Bruce and Keith will wrestle the masked men later in the show. 2/3 Falls for the NWA Stampede North American Heavyweight Championship: Bret Hart vs. Curt Hennig More good goodness. Of course we’re JIP to the third fall about 20 minutes in but this looks incredible. Both guys are pretty beat up by this point and geezus does Bret look lanky. Curt’s not much beefier, but his work is a bit more advanced than Bret’s at this point. Bret wins with a roll up and Curt is not happy but shakes hands anyway. Can’t really give this a rating since so much was not shown. Call it **. - Intermission. NWA Stampede International Tag Team Championship: The Dungeon Masters vs. Stan Hansen & Jerry Blackwell Did someone say goofy 80’s tag team gimmicks for $500? Enter the Dungeon Masters, Jim Neidhart and Mr. Hito, working a Road Warriors gimmick with a bad name. You see, Mr. Hito was a trainer at the Hart Dungeon and Bruce Hart thought this team needed a money gimmick, so he gave them helmet and armor to wear to the ring. You can’t make this stuff up people. Not one of the better examples of Bruce’s booking prowess to be honest. This match starts out somewhat incredible though, as Hansen comes out swinging the bullrope and Blackwell was over with the Stampede crowd since he was being paid by Jimmy Hart to take out the Harts. One the match proper gets started though, things slow down and Hansen and Neidhart work some nice power struggles, but Hito just can’t hang with these guys. This goes on wayyyy too long and eventually it looks like Neidhart is going to pin Blackwell when Hansen comes in for the bullrope to draw the DQ at something like 25 minutes. Yeah, let’s show this in full and splice up the Hennig-Hart match. Okay then. DUD Keith Hart & Bruce Hart vs. The Masked Men This of course the result of one of the best Stampede angles of all time, as Jimmy Hart came in from All Star Wrestling to start a territory feud. I forget the details exactly, but it involved Jimmy Hart swindling a large sum of cash from the Harts and using it to pay guys like Jerry Blackwell and Terry Funk to destroy the Hart Family. Here we have two guys in masks that have been causing trouble on TV for a few weeks finally get a match against the Harts. The match is quick and heated with the masked dudes going over pretty convincingly. I looked through the Spectators from the time, and Smeltzer is reporting the masked men are Jerry and David Novak, the Bounty Hunters, so there you go. This was almost as bad as the previous match. ½* NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Harley Race vs. Dino Bravo Probably SmarT to put this on as the sub-main since there was no way in hell Bravo was going over. Crowd is hot somehow even after those last two stinkers. Dino gets a great babyface reaction to put things over the edge. We get a Great Technical Harley Race match with both guys exchanging holds and working hard to gain the upper hand. Bravo really holds his own and looks strong going down to Race after about 20 minutes shown of a 30 minute match. Really high end stuff for the time, and absolutely made Dino as a star in Stampede. Now is when he started working 30 minute draws with Bret around the horn, I believe. **** No Disqualification Grudge Match: Wahoo McDaniel vs. The Stomper Time had told that the last match saved the show and made a star out of Bravo, but this was the real draw for the card to begin with. Stomper had been going off about redemption and quoting bible verses for a few weeks, but then crossed spiritual boundaries when he destroyed a sacred Native headdress. An interesting side-note is that Gouldie didn’t destroy Wahoo’s headdress, but rather the headdress of Sonny Two Rivers, a Japanese talent who was working a Native gimmick. Apparently Wahoo was so offended that Bruce had a Japanese wrestler doing an Indian gimmick that he refused to work Stampede unless the gimmick was trashed, so Stomper attacked Sonny Two Rivers on TV , bloodied him with a chain, and killed the gimmick dead. This match is just brutal, btw. Eventually Stomper finds his chain and busts Wahoo open, but Wahoo retaliates with a rawhide leather strap! Both guys get pretty beat up, but Wahoo ends up with Stomper’s chain. Wahoo accidentally misses Stomper with the chain and knocks the ref out cold. He hits Stomper with a big chop using the chain. Visual pin fall, but the ref is still down. Stomper goes down low and gets his chain back. He wraps the chain around his foot and hits a big stomp on Wahoo’s midsection from the top rope. Ref is awake now. Stomper gets the win. Just a sick brawl and thankfully we got the full 14 minutes on tape. ***3/4 Afterwards, both guys are a bloody mess and Wahoo looks visibly disappointed. Stomper goes to destroy Wahoo’s headdress, but McDaniel makes the comeback, gets his leather strap and heat back. I know the two had a few Chain Matches and Indian Strap Matches around this time that didn’t make tape but sound AMAZING. The Pulse Sort of a mixed bag here, but totally worth it all for the historical context. Stampede started taping this super shows in July 1983, so we should see a lot more of these pop up on 24/7 soon. A lot of this stuff is clipped to hell, but the NWA title match and the main event are both going out of your way to see. And the Stampede-All Star feud was pretty hot around this time. Mildly recommended.
