[1992-09-02-WCW-Clash of the Champions XX] Steve Austin vs Ricky Steamboat
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Hard to top as a show opener. These two have had better matches, but this is a nice story with Steamboat overcoming the rib injury to beat Austin for the TV title. On top of that, it is short and they keep it moving late with a slower start to ease the crowd into it. Does exactly what it's supposed to do and everything makes sense within the confines of the match too. Steamer doesn't want to leave the ribs open so he slows it down and works a headlock. Everything doesn't have to be a classic.- 16 replies

Vale throws great kicks and uses his range well. Takahashi is essentially Kikuchi here, but he seems to do well in that role. Vale's ground game is so different from all of the slick Japanese fighters. He is all power and trying to bull/strike his way out of everything.

[1992-09-15-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Ric Flair vs Randy Savage
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
I liked the match, mostly for Savage. Flair is certainly more focused on the knee than normal, but something still seems off with what he is doing. I'd agree that Hall makes a good showing for himself here. Razor really comes off big.- 15 replies

I definitely see the proto-ECW vibe here, down to Hat Guy. I did find myself wishing for a hot crowd or one that cared even a little. Fun brawl for what it was.

[1992-08-30-WCW-Main Event] Cactus Jack vs Dustin Rhodes
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Liked how they put over Foley here. Both as a dangerous competitor and a weird character without one getting in the way of the other. Hayes is great along with Ross, way better chemistry between the two than Jesse had with any WCW announcer. We got a Lance Russell mention, which always makes me sad. The greatest wrestling announcer ever and he is on non-TV duty?? Anyway, fun match with Dustin playing the babyface technician who gets goaded into a wild brawl. Wondering if anyone watching this in real time in '92 would have guessed the career trajectory of either guy.- 8 replies

As for Daredevil, if you read the Bendis run I would follow up with the Brubaker run. Not only because Brubaker is my favorite contemporary writer, it came right after and is also really good.
-
I enjoyed Dimension Z. My favorite Cap run is Brubaker, but I tend to like the "familiar character in unfamiliar surroundings" stories too. I think it was OJ way back in this thread who said that Cap is a hard character to write interesting stories for and I agree. It's kinda the same deal as Superman where you have to really love the character (and I do in the case of Cap) to sit through a lot of the samey reactions he has to whatever it is the villains are doing. The villains do a lot of the heavy lifting in the morally upright hero stories. If you don't really get into those moments where the hero comes through and figures out how to fix things in a satisfactory way to them a lot of it will fall flat for you. Also, if taken wrong Cap will come across as super stuffy and authoritarian with some of the less law-abiding heroes when he makes appearances depending on the writer. Somebody on page 8 mentioned that a lot of the Astro City books were pulled from Kindle. I read that in late 2020 Busiek announced he was going to start releasing Astro City in graphic novel form with no monthly comics. No timeframe, but very exciting!

[1992-08-30-AJW-Grand Prix] Manami Toyota vs Mariko Yoshida
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Not a Manami Toyota fan. I am impressed by her ability, both athletically and executing wresting moves. Great dropkicks for sure. And she could run circles around just about anyone in a wrestling ring. I doubt it will surprise anyone that I'm not a huge fan of a wrestler who constantly has to be sprinting around the ring, even if it is an impressive thing to be able to do. She sucks the life out of this match for me by blowing off the legwork and going into the "look how impressive I am" offense. What impresses me is wrestling within the story of a match, not getting your shit in at the expense of it.- 10 replies

[1992-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] Bret Hart vs Davey Boy Smith
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Was Diana ever allowed to speak on WWF TV again after saying "intercontinental BELT"? Anyway, I did like seeing Davey going more technical because in his early career in England that was very much his style. Too bad he got blown up so fast and had to be guided through the match by Bret. That pescado/neckbreaker thing was all kinds of mean and I loved Bret's adjustment. Really good match and easily the best WWF match of 1992 so far. -
[1992-08-29-WWF-Summerslam] Randy Savage vs Ultimate Warrior
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Not seeing what most of you saw in Warrior's performance here. He threw crap punches, seemed to struggle with basic wrestling sequences and posed after every second or third spot to catch his breath. On top of that Vince was awful on commentary. The whole Flair/Perfect thing ended up being really goofy too. Put a heel in the match if you need that kind of deal to get the match over. I did like Savage though and I thought that one spot they did with Warrior backdrop-ing out of a piledriver only to fall into a sunset flip was pretty good. -
Not as good as Jake's earlier interview. Probably due to the lack of focus. It's still worth seeing just for Jake though.

[1992-08-29-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Stud Stable
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Fun TV match with Fuller busting out some really cool offense. It is RnR by the numbers, but those are numbers I have always liked. Southern tags are basically comfort food for me when it comes to wrestling, so I'll never complain when they are executed well enough.- 9 replies

I think a part of the issue here is that Bob Armstrong may be a little too inclined to stack the deck against Corny and the Bodies. I would say that a babyface commissioner has to be a little on the side of the babyfaces, but not so much that the heels have a valid case of the deck being stacked against them. It seems like a case of Corny wanting to have something to complain about and not having enough restraint in putting it into the booking as he ought to.

Embry and Adams added to the list of Gilbert's challengers is indeed intriguing. Would have loved to see more on that. Good promo from Eddie, but I prefer Dundee, Hart & especially Lawler's from this show.

[1992-08-29-USWA-TV[ Tommy Rich vs Bill Dundee / Interview: Bill Dundee
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Again loved Dundee's promo. He's so good at getting right to the heart of the issue and staying there. Rich does sound like a psycho in his video.- 13 replies

Loved Jimmy here and I am sad that there isn't more of this Jimmy Hart in the 90s. King's promo is amazing as well and he plays the small-town hero card perfectly.

[1992-08-28-UWFi-The Root of Wrestling] Kiyoshi Tamura vs Yoji Anjo
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
I'll agree this is overlong, but there is a ton of good stuff packed into the match. Both of these guys are absolute workhorses and really bring the goods on the mat. Tamura may be slightly better on the mat, but he can't match Anjoh on his feet. Good to great match that would absolutely be MOTY contender at 15 mins.- 12 replies

I enjoyed parts of this. The whole didn't make sense. Casas working as the underneath babyface and cowardly heel all at the same time didn't work for me. Dragon had lots of cool offense, and had 90% of the offense in the match. Why did he lose 2 falls? I guess I don't mind the idea that a well-executed submission or roll-up (which both were) can end a match, but I wish Casas had gotten a good chunk more offense and either a. ) stuck with the cowardly rudo act all the way through or b.) hadn't been trying to run away so much and just played the babyface fighting from underneath.

If you are going to set up the Summerslam mains like they did, this is at least one way of building intrigue for them. Probably the best way given the circumstances, but I kinda wish they had done Savage/Flair. Also, maybe some seeds of the Attitude Era here where there truly are no good guys, everyone is out for themselves.

[1992-08-22-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Stan Hansen vs Mitsuharu Misawa
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
For years I did not like this match. This viewing was different. First, going in knowing about Misawa's left arm helps a lot. Second, I have finally accepted that Hansen worked Misawa differently than he did everyone else and even kinda dug it this time. Hansen doesn't want to get elbowed, plain and simple. Despite being wild Texas brawler he also wants to win. So he is going after the match differently knowing Misawa's strength is in the elbow. Third, great selling and struggle by both guys throughout. It certainly is not your standard AJPW match, but if you look at it as just "a wrestling match" and judge it on the strengths and weaknesses of the wrestlers involved everything makes a ton of sense. And there is a ton of small stuff that I missed before. The kickass Hansen dropkick after eating a few elbows, then staying down just as long as Misawa. Misawa showing a ton of fire (and a bit of temper) while going off on Hansen at one point. Hansen's king of the mountain and Misawa's fight to get through the ropes with both guys fighting each other from the ground was amazing. Hansen selling the facelock like death rocked too. None of which is what you would think of as classic King's Road, but it all works within the match they wrestled. Maybe it is in the top 50 AJPW matches not wrestled like AJPW matches? I would agree that it is not great when you think about what you want from Hansen/Misawa. And I wish they had done one 15 minute balls-to-the-wall elbow vs. big Texan brawling sprint. I truly do. The fact that we didn't get one of those shouldn't make this match something less than what it is though.- 22 replies

Loved how this match put Taue over, and his performance in it. Jumbo was great too, which is absolutely no surprise. The MVC were pretty good save a few times where they broke the momentum of the match to take a breather. Seems like an important match in the Akira Taue canon.
