NWA Lutte Internationale/International Wrestling June 1986
dawho5 replied to SirEdger's topic in Promotions
OMG has been such a great addition to your roster. Satanico against Danny Davis is probably workrate match of the night. Martel definitely needs some time off, but I doubt he'll take it. Kernodle has hishands full of late with both Kirchner and Jacques. Main would have been a fun match even if Borne and Lawler's styles couldn't be more opposite. -
Sorry guys, didn't get this done the weekend before and last weekend filled up fast. Original Airdate: June 13th, 1986 TNT beat Armandito Salgado with the cobra dinamita (cobra clutch). Los Super Medicos came out to the desk and talked about taking the Caribbean Tag Titles away from the Starrs for the fans. Jonathan Boyd and the Crusher beat los Tejanos when Boyd hit his three point clothesline whle the Crusher held Tejano 1. Bobby Jaggers stopped by the Sports Shop and had a lighthearted conversation with Chicky Starr about helping injure Dutch Mantell, the way money can change things for the better and the possibility of joining the Starr Corporation. Chicky Starr also dismissed the chances of los Super Medicos beating him and his cousin Ronnie. Gama Singh beat Mr. X with a camel clutch while El Profe and TNT watched from the entrance. No post-match activities. Hercules Ayala came to the desk and talked about respecting Bam Bam Bigelow's actions towards Barrabas. Ayala also talked about the challenges of facing Bam Bam Bigelow when Bigelow didn't have a manager he was disagreeing with distracting him. Ayala beat El Vikingo with the figure four. Dutch Mantell came to the desk and talked about Bobby Jaggers being a coward. Dutch talked about Jaggers trying to use Owen Hart to attack him with a foreign object in a match. He knew Jaggers had something planned for July 5th but vowed to be ready for it. In the main, Owen Hart and los Mercenarios took on Ricky Santana and the Caribbean Express. Santana, Castillo and Perez were hot right away, but Owen went to the eyes and tossed Santana to the floor where los Mercenarios were in their element. Santana eventually got the tag to Castillo, who also got roughed up. Perez got the same after some heel shenanigans, but Santana took the big hot tag and cleared the ring. Santana had Mercenario 2 down with the flying crossbody when Owen and Merc 1 hit the ring and a 6-man brawl started. Abdullah Tamba came to the ring and attacked Santana, leading to a DQ. Santana was clearly the target of the attack, but Invaders 1, 2 and 3 as well as Hercules Ayala were out to make the save.

I recommend The Carnies vs. Hysteria from last years Dynamite Cup. I thought this started out good. The Carnies are clearly the heels and give a decent enough shine. The dorky looking guy from Hysteria was the right choice as the FIP. I didn't care for the hot tag as having to take time cutting down the big man takes a lot away from any energy it might have brought. Said big man's bumping needs some work too. He doesn't fall over and doesn't fall over, but when he does it's this ridiculous Curt Hennig style bump. Once we get past that we get to all of the cutesy stuff that I can't stand in modern wrestling. And not two guys exchanging strikes, but four and on their knees, YAY! I hope the sarcasm comes across. Poor execution throughout and a waste of a good enough Southern tag start make this one a dud for me.

We lost a legend and easily one of the top 3 400+ pound workers ever. RIP Vader.

That TV was great. Loved Hayes and DiBiase 's exchange. Giving Garvin and Embry their belts back is great, but that next title match... Loved the cliffhanger at the end. Is it REALLY Dusty?? We may never know. 1st round of the tourney seemed like the right guys won. Houston and Price was the only one in question. Garvin had a rough night and it looks like Traylor has not found his morals yet. Funk's win in round 2 was perfect. A guy on a horse would distract me at a wrestling show too, so I can't blame Gordy. I wonder who that might have been. Much like with the Real American Machine in Japan, we may never know. People have to watch that damn piledriver on the floor with Terry. Funk is such a better choice as champ. Kevin never once did anything for me as a wrestler. Great, great job of switching gears and immediately having hot feuds. Really impressive work.

I liked that Greenville got a heel heavy show to begin with, then Snuka gets one over on Kernodle with an assist from Kirchner. DiBiase and Backlund would have torn the house down. Rip Oliver is proving to be a lot of trouble for Paul Jones. Fernandez and Rude with a good showing. Graham came this close, but just didn't have enough left to put Bundy away. Barn burner of a 6-man tag should have had the crowd ready for the main. Crazy end to the Norfolk show, Singh vs. Orndorff feud in the future?? Count me in!!

I love how your shows stay so close to what the UWF was. Great hype for all of the big matches. Ole and Magnum sign a double chain match against the Russians on the same show that Bullet Bob admits teaming with Fuller was a mistake. Hmm. Honky trying to chase down Lawler can only make the eventual payoff better. Bullet Bob coming back for the win at the end is a great way to end the show and set up a Ron Wright/Fuller hissy fit next week.

Cactus and Sabu are putting together a Hell of a feud. Zenk gets a big win and Adams gets one with meaning. Great match for Death Sentence to be in for their style. Pillman and Burke continue to be very entertaining. Slaughter knocking DeBeers out of the ring would have been satisfying for the fans. Zbysko and Kabuki would be a sneaky good match. White is becoming an absolute beast. Tanaka and Finlay would have been a fun match.

Billy Graham should lend a lot of legitimacy to the 10,000 dollar challenge. Tiger Jeet Singh continues his madness and we can only hope Inoki and St. Clair are up for the match. Orndorff is looking ready for his rematch with Race and I think you need a no-DQ for where the feud is now. Davey Baby and Riddle had a great exchange, better than normal even. Hot 6-man to build heat for both feuds. DiBiase is putting the heat on Duggan big time. I can't wait to see Duggan's response.
-
BIG 8 man tag next week that looks really entertaining. I like continuing the feud with Michaels and Herc even if Roma is injured. Jesse offering to take Tully's place if he wins is a nice touch. Hennig pulling out the win despite the worked-over knee is such a great bit of babyface booking.

If I don't have one given to me by tomorrow I'll jump on one of the other matches given out.

St. Clair proves his skill by lasting 15 with OMG. Wayne over Lane = Nightmares/Fabs feuding? If so, Hell yes! Big win for Benoit to send him to Japan. Jacques with a solid win over Mark. Paul E. finally gets a portion of the just desserts he has coming. -
AWA is such a strong territory on every level. You freaking opened with Adams vs. a Guerrero! Burke/Pillman has been a blast to see play out. Then you go and top that match with the Can Am tag match. I seriously need to see Kabuki in some kind of team to take on the 6-man champs now. Scorpio could probably drag something good out of Zenk. On a card full of dream matches, Ronnie Garvin vs. Buzz Sawyer...great work there! World tag title match would have been really good, but the rest of this card overshadows it for me. Crazy great main with the unexpected team of Steamer, Sarge and White! Speaking of teams that could challenge for the 6-man titles....

Six man tag with the Neighborhood was a good way to warm the fans up after the opener. White going nuts definitely has some implications for Rose and Somers that they should be scared of. I wonder how long Nord lasts as a Snake ally. Great, GREAT tag match, but I was more interested in the Adams story. Which is saying something. Spivey continues to shine despite the injury. I wonder who takes advantage eventually. Seriously? That 6-man title is your second match?? Your roster is too stacked my friend. Sabu and Cactus is a perfect change of pace follow-up match for that. Patera and Blackwell with a really big tag win. Jake is back with a vengeance and I'm not sure I would want to be in his way. British Steel continues to roll and I love seeing them get that exposure this early. Two excellent title matches with complete opposite endings, very nice. Bigelow showing up in the main was awesome. I love how you are using him.

OMG resorting to trickery shows a lot of respect for Jacques. Borne is a really fascinating character and I am looking forward to where you go with him. Brian Adias had some terrible luck on that date. I'm thinking he is the heel here. Great main with Paul E. crashing the post-match. -
Embry's look is super sleazy now and I love it. I did like Embry's insinuation that Tanaka is not truly against foreign objects being brought into a match. Heels should have some truth to what they say and there is enough there, just twisted around to Embry's way of thinking, that it makes a good basis for the promo. I did think the golf club was going a little far, but up until that point I was with Embry on the foreign objects. Really good promo that stops just short of great.

[1992-03-07-USWA-TV] The Moondogs vs Jerry Lawler & Koko B Ware
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
Great brawling after the Kamala interference. As a wrestling fan I am not overly fond of bullshit finishes, but Memphis does them better than just about anyplace. I have hopes that Kamala becomes a part of this feud, but I'm not sure they have any basis in reality. -
Sid's reading of the letter was enough. It was really good and got the point across. Whippleman was completely unnecessary. The post-match attack seemed designed to make Sid look like a dick, which might be due to his former popularity. Regardless, it really doesn't tie into his purpose (getting back at Hogan for the very real favoritism he received) despite the attempt.

[1992-03-07-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ric Flair & Mr Perfect
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
I thought Perfect stayed out of the way really well here. He did enough to make you remember he was there, but not so much that he took away from Flair. Okerlund did a great job as the upstanding citizen interviewer. Flair really knocked it out of the park. He kept from going over the top but still had this sense of joy to him. He really looked like a guy who was enjoying rubbing this in Savage's face.- 10 replies

I wonder if Dusty will make it to the Bash or retire...

I'm guessing countout on the Dr. D win. Morgan and Lane for 26 minutes sounds like a crazy fun match. Honestly I'm not sure I want to see a Roadies match longer than 30 minutes. Or Gang for that matter. Probably not Kernodle either. -
I like this response. It's the most constructive way to handle the situation and yes, it certainly does challenge you to scrap half of your feuds. Also, very much a reality-based decision if dirt sheets had been a factor at the time.

[1992-03-04-AJPW-Excite Series] Stan Hansen vs Mitsuharu Misawa
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
I liked the hot start, but Hansen feeding Misawa a rest front facelock seems really out of place. Hansen stiffed Misawa around the right ear pretty early on and it got sold for a while. Hansen showing Misawa enough respect to work over the neck was a nice touch. I loved Hansen's setup for the first lariat. He basically gave Misawa a very common situation he knew the Misawa counter for and anticipated it. Very much a veteran kind of move and I love seeing it in this kind of match. It puts over why Hansen still has Misawa's number at the same time it shows a lot of respect to Misawa. If Misawa was a lesser opponent, Hansen wouldn't have to do that. He'd just kill him with the lariat. Misawa's toughness down the stretch was great. The double pin off the facelock was too much. It's Hansen, once he kicks out of that first try you spent that nickel. Still a lot in the arsenal to attempt before getting desperate to put Hansen away with the facelock no matter how hot the move is. I did like how this match put MIsawa over and my memory of later matches tells me they built off of a lot of the themes here. I still agree with jdw that at least one match of 15 minutes with no attempt to break the other guy down besides beating the fuck out of him up until the finishing stretch would have blown everything else these two did in singles matches out of the water.- 18 replies

I disliked the New 52 run of Justice League and tolerated all of the nonsense in the Flash series because I like the character of Barry Allen a lot. The Rebirth Flash is better for the story, but I am lukewarm at best to it. It took me a while to warm up to 1990s Justice League, but it is miles better than the New 52. The 2 Brad Meltzer Justice League novels and Identity Crisis rank among my favorite comics. I loved the entire Geoff Johns run of Green Lantern. Such great storytelling throughout that the artist of the next iteration immediately took a shit on. The follow-ups to that have been okay to good, but I can't get into them as much. I will say that I enjoyed the Sinestro and Atrocitus/Red Lanterns spinoff far more than the Green Lantern stuff that came out later in the New 52 and wish that more of that kind of thing were popular. I've read one volume of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow Hard Traveling Heroes graphic novels and look forward to the second a lot. Some of the dialogue is very dated, so get ready for Native Americans calling white people paleface, but overall it is an incredible look at how Dennis O'Neill viewed American society at the time. I've started in on the X-O Man'O'War books by Robert Venditti and the original Hellblazer (Vertigo) series. Both show a ton of promise. My favorite comic has to be Kingdom Come. Identity Crisis, All Star Superman and the Killing Joke have to be up there too. Justice is really, really good as a kind of precursor to Kingdom Come.
