  1. So the newspaper headline had the word "wrasslin" in it, which tickles the Hell out of me. Sunny is now a twice turncoat with the tag champs (where are Skip and Zip now anyway?). Austin did react to Ted saying he would be done. You could see he was interested in that.
  2. Better than 95% of the WWF fare at the time, so I was happy even if it's not the best strap match ever. I'll also agree it's the first time Austin got to really even come close to letting loose. Very good match even with the cliched strap match finish and extra time.
  3. I thought Shawn worked harder in the early going, he actually tried to put some kind of struggle in on his end while in holds. Davey seemed really disinterested while he was in a hold by Shawn. Was that ridiculous bump to the floor by Shawn something where Davey sidestepped a crossbody? Looked really weird. Finish was less than ideal, I'm assuming that the second ref was Corny's bombshell? Either way there was some entertaining stuff here, but didn't seem like a WWF PPV main event for a lot of it.
  4. I have to ask the question. Phineas seems athletic enough for a guy his size. Are the Godwinns really as bad a team as they wrestle, or are they out there underperforming on purpose? Seems to me they could probably do more, but are shackled by the "clueless hillbilly" gimmick.
  5. WCW executive committee with yet another ridiculous, horrible decision. Either way, it's good to see DDP and he is coming off of a pretty good match against Brad Armstrong. I NEED more Brad Armstrong in my life.
  6. Faces of Fear have been one of my favorite teams since I was watching in real time in 97. Love to see them get a solid title shot on Nitro. Did anyone else notice that Savage is wearing a completely different outfit from earlier in the show when he couldn't get in during the following segment? Would WCW really have filmed 2 segments outside of two buildings without noticing that Savage wasn't wearing the same thing?
  7. Both Flair and Heenan put Eddy over in a huge way here. That tornado DDT was super smooth. The match before was Fire & Ice (a sleeper favorite of mine due to Scott Norton) vs. the Steiners in another super-fun TV match for completely different reasons. Think late 80s AJPW. Great start to Nitro!
  8. Is this the genesis of the hard-working, never say die DDP with an uber finisher in the Diamond Cutter? If so, totally worth a ridiculous set-up tournament and dead crowd. There have to be easier ways though.
  9. This whole concept is beyond bad. They did what they could with it for a few minutes then went to the obvious "swerve" of the Horsemen working together. Fun, and with the way the feud had been built it works. Would have liked to see a bit better booking though.
  10. Full match was great with Luger really putting the Giant over as a beast. The chokeslam through the table was a great setup of the Giant as a wild, untamed force of nature. More booking like this please?
  11. Was not a huge fan of this. Probably due to Hunter not really being good enough to carry a match like this and being given a lot of it (very generously) by his friend Shawn. The nose stuff was amusing.
  12. This type of segment is crazy to me. Davey Boy throws Shawn around in the ocean for a minute or so and then runs off. What was that meant to accomplish unless you were going to go way outside of wrestling and have Davey attempt to actually try to drown Shawn? Which, as we know from certain WCW segments in the desert, is incredibly stupid. End of the day, it was kind of porn-lite for the ladies like the Sunny segments are for the guys.
  13. I'll give Dustin tons of credit for his commitment to the character. It does seem like a replay of the last 3 major stories he was in though, as mentioned above. All of it is tremendously well-done, bur we do need to see more of who Goldust is besides coming onto the manly man across from him to mess with them.
  14. Very 80s woman for sure and I got Liz vibes. Either way this was silly and poorly thought out. Especially the parts praising Shawn. Pick a tone, people.
  15. If I didn't already know they would be going to commercial and having some other more important thing happening just based on the workers involved I would have been irritated. Luckily I've seen a few Nitros in my time and enjoyed the match for what it was. A good sprint between two guys who can really go. Wish Liger had been more involved on Nitro over time, but I get they probably needed him in NJPW.
  16. Sullivan has said that he booked himself as Hogan's rival to make Hogan comfortable with him as a booker. Go back to the formula of a guy sending monsters after yeellow & red Hogan so that Hogan would trust him and allow him to make the plan. I wish I could say I thought it was entertaining, but I don't. This match was okay. The earlier one with Flair cheating in more varied and well thought-out ways was better. Even so, Giant has been booked really well when Hogan isn't involved. He looks really dominant and unstoppable for the most part. I'll agree he bumps too much and somebody should have smartened him up about not killing his own mystique.
  17. I think this is better than the WWF version of it now that I have watched both in such close proximity. Goldust and Piper brought it back to the ring inexplicably where these guys kept it in the parking lot and actually built a match out of it. Great stuff and I honestly with these guys had feuded for a few years in WCW.
  18. I liked Shawn's promo here as well. Of course Corny tops it. This is an odd way to set up Bulldog as a challenger, but it seems effective.
  19. This was an impressive match for both. Shawn takes a horrendous beating and doesn't give up. Diesel looks like a bad motherfucker and incredibly cool at the same time dishing that beating out. Maybe he looks a little stupid for not collecting Shawn right after the table powerbomb and finishing him off, but that is a minor gripe. If this is Nash's favorite match I completely understand it. Excellent stuff from both guys.
  20. Austin was already feuding with Vega. I think Loss nailed it with his thoughts. Except they never had Savio win the title, they just held it up due to a BS TV finish. Honestly, if they wanted to hotshot a rating they could have just skipped last week's match and done this exact thingin it's place. Then in ONE match that accomplished something for the Austin/Vega program. Then have some kind of Goldust match this week against a half decent opponent where Warrior comes out and calls Goldust on his BS cheating finish attempt after the match to lead into their match on Sunday.
  21. Hot coffee was used twice on that 4/1 Nitro IIRC. I kind of like how the Giant is booked against everyone but Hogan during this period. He actually feels like a huge threat to everyone else due to his size instead of an oversized midcarder. I will agree Flair has been on autopilot for a while. Almost every match involves 4-6 overhead press slams by his opponents. Fun stuff around the finish though. I would guess that the direction WCW is taking (Hulk kills everyone) at the time is the reason for that. Past that the 2 main storylines are women's shoes/hot coffee supporting a tenuous and confusing alliance between Sullivan and the Horsemen and the Lex/Sting thing. They tried to put the Road Warriors and Steiners into something maybe, not sure they ever had any kind of direction there. PE/Nasties is sort of happening, but that is off and on. You have to figure Flair can see the direction this is going and how little what he is doing matters here.
  22. I'd agree with Soup on this one. This is just as bad as the Billionaire Ted skits. Concentrate on making your show better and not trying to trash the opposition with dumb jokes.
  23. The best heels have at least a kernel of truth behind all of their claims to being wronged. Just so happens that all of Bret's complaints are 100% verifiable. It makes a real solid base for his upcoming heel turn for sure. Bret may not be the flashiest talker, but I'll fourth (or whatever) the argument that he is very effective.
  24. For this whole match I was thinking Stone Cold (who is feuding with Savio) was going to be involved in Goldust retaining the belt. It even fits with the way they ahd bookied that feud leading in. Instead we get...this. This is more the kind of stupid booking that WCW has been historically accused (and guilty) of. Neither of these guys has had anything to do with each other and also has something going on separately. Why?
  25. I'll agree, Sunny over Sable any day of the week. Either way, I can draw you a line between the way Sunny has been presented since January and the reappearance of Kimberly and Liz on WCW TV. And how they are used and shot. I can say that the opening two matches of this Raw have more good wrestling in them than the last 2 episodes of Nitro to balance out the complete fluff nature of this segment. Odd to think it since I was always a WCW guy for the in-ring aspects of what they did in 97.
