  1. So the idea that Wrestlemania is the place where finishers go to die came before the self-aggrandizing epics of later Manias. Interesting. Kind of a nothing deal, not bad, not good.
  2. I honestly did not expect this at all with the push Hunter had been getting. Also had never seen Sable's debut. I preferred Hunter's valet from the previous Raw if I'm honest. Also, the entrances were longer than the match. Waste of however long it was of PPV time.
  3. Certainly more supportive of Bret than most of his dialogue over the past few weeks.
  4. Bret's heeling does seem to be on purpose. Not that he probably had to reach real far for any of it, but I can't imagine he was unaware of it. Fun match with a lot of seemingly out of place offense for 1996 WWF. I did like Leif's change in attitude during the match from dorky Shawn fan to actual heel by the end.
  5. This segment in particular really puts the Giant over. Imagine if WCW had run mostly stuff like this involving a 7"+, 400lb. monster. Can't imagine that would have gone well...
  6. Very fun match and I also liked Lex a ton here. Seems like a lot of the crowd really want to buy into babyface Lex as well the last few weeks. Why isn't more character work like this done in wrestling?
  7. I'll agree that the promo being mostly about Luger was a little strange when he is facing the Giant. Pre-NWO WCW booking had some flaws.
  8. Savage working this match as banged up as he was is pretty good to begin with. Would have loved to see a somewhat healthy Savage feuding with Finlay.
  9. This was not great. Sting taking a long walk to find...2 brooms? Again we have Sting being duped by the heels for the finish, which seems to be the story of WCW. This went on far too long for what it was. Possibly they had to add the time in to make up for shortening the Finlay/Regal match and this one suffered a little for it?
  10. Two things: 1. The merger in fact killed any power Ted had. 2. Didn't Vince just become a prophet of his own future, but as his hated rival?
  11. Not a bad angle, but a bit too hokey for my tastes. Well done for what it was. I did like the finish with Diesel not using the powerbomb, but almost getting it despite being distracted by the big boot. Then he just punches Horowitz once and it's over. Kinda cool way of doing it I think.
  12. Bret isn't wrong in this one about Shawn, but he's clearly so much of a mark for himself just by the content that it's hard to really be on his side. That said, the Bret/Shawn training part of Raw last week was easily one of the top 2 parts of the show. The more I see of this period of Raw, the more both Bret and Shawn really have fatal flaws that show through anytime they have a microphone. And both are phenomenal athletes and workers, but they are absolute polar opposites in the ring. Bret is all about making everything he does basic and impactful-looking. Shawn wants to make everything pretty and spectacular. I'm obviously more of a Bret guy and I think that difference I just outlined is a major reason. The WWE went the other way and I feel like the modern WWE style is very much patterned after Shawn Michaels specifically.
  13. Goldust and Piper works better than Goldust and Razor. I don't think Razor was near as into this as Piper was character-wise. When both guys are playing it to the hilt like this it works great.
  14. Interesting thing to try. Not sure I'm as high on it as the rest of the comments, but way better than the "bookerman" thing.
  15. Admittedly, better than the previous skits. Still weak despite some very good on point humor.
  16. This and the Sting/Bubba match from two weeks prior are two excellent examples of really fun, hard-hitting TV matches. Neither will go down as an all-time classic, but both are better than a lot of the content around them just for how well-executed they are for not being particularly well-structured. I am also not a fan of either team, but this one was a beacon of hope that good things are coming.
  17. I hadn't seen this and Bret's comments about Mexican wrestling are pretty telling. Who are you to judge El Dandy anyway? For all my not liking Shawn for certain aspects of his in-ring style, he is clearly in great shape and (surprisingly) can throw not ridiculously bad looking punches. When there is a half of a heavy bag in front of him. Bret's training, in comparison seems on the one hand tame, but getting stretched by Stu seems like it would really, really, really suck. If only either promotion cared about submissions not involving your designated finisher that would certainly be a huge advantage to Bret.
  18. That's a great podcast right there. Fun to hear about what "aerial wrestling" was defined as in the 70s in Japan as well. Especially given how it took off later.
  19. A couple of those quotes were not great, but I have a feeling you could find some pretty damning Vince McMahon quotes if you wanted to go the other direction. The whole "Hulk handcuffing himself to the turnbuckle" bit was the only good part of the segment. I was wondering why WCW had the camera so close on that while it happened.
  20. Agree with all the above. These are consistently good, which is difficult to say about the rest of Raw.
  21. Great match with the exception of Shawn's oversell out of the corner where he actually trips over Kid following a dropkick. Really great work by both, Shawn in showing vulnerability and Kid shows he can look like a complete badass. Odd structure with the only real shine being Shawn backdropping Kid over the top during his entrance. still worked though.
  22. Dustin really got into playing Goldust. Easily one of the more entertaining gimmicks on the roster right now just for how off-kilter it was and how much Dustin didn't back down from it at all.
  23. As much as I would not be a wrestling fan now if I had dipped in at this point of Raw and Nitro (and both shows suck more than they don't right now), I find Vince's humor mostly falls flat here. Yes, that whole woman's shoe thing is beyond ridiculous and well-played here. I would argue that very often Vince's shows, for reasons not dealing with the talent, are equal or worse than Nitro more often than not and better maybe once. Maybe you clean up your own house before shit-talking the other guy's house.
  24. I was listening to a podcast the other day (can't remember which) and they mentioned that some of the non-Lucas folks who had been at LucasFilm from the start, his wife, etc. had remarked that every idea he had was 20% a good idea, he just needed people to strip away the 80% of the idea that made it bad. George Lucas was Vince Russo......
  25. I tried watching the 2024 product. They seem to have embraced the idea they need wrestling on their show. At the same time there is too much "entertainment" present while that is going on and it tends to hurt the matches. Not only that, everyone seems to be working in a way that is both sloppy and yet not impactful-looking at all. It's like they are performing some kind of overly rehearsed choreography with no kind of meaning to it.
