Patrick is surprisingly good as a promo. I'm normally against referees as heels, but in the case of Nick Patrick and the NWO it works.

Sure, there are cracks starting to show, but this is a great angle in a continuing string of them. I keep looking for that spot when the NWO goes from amazing idea that is perfectly executed to a mess, but we aren't even close yet.

[1996-09-06-WWF-Raw Championship Friday] Steve Austin vs Marc Mero
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
Fun match, but the finish is really bad. Pillman overshadowed the whole thing, so it wouldn't be a surprise if it was meant to be the match < the commentary. -
[1996-08-19-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Possibly the angle/promo of the year for WCW not including some of the NWO stuff. Arn and sting really knock it out of the park here. I also enjoyed Flair's facial expression when the close-up was on him. It was absolutely perfect for what was being suggested.- 9 replies

[1996-08-19-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Arn absolutely killed it in this promo. I am starting to think he is consistently better than Flair as a promo, but that may be because his style hits me better than Flair's does.- 4 replies

Two of my favorites going against one another. And it worked. I was a fan of this and I liked the finish, especially how it put Dean over without hurting Regal.

This seems like a return to the really bad gimmicks that WWE guys were using from the early 90s involving outside of wrestling jobs.

The match itself was really, really good. The two restarts were really, really stupid. One thing that bothered me from the start, like it does with all these Shawn PPV matches from the time. All the heels "hate" Shawn. But they let him come in the ring, do his male stripper thing and take off his entrance gear for way too long. If Vader really hated Shawn there is no way he gets that kind of time.

[1996-08-18-WWF-Summerslam] The Undertaker vs Mankind (Boiler Room Brawl)
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
This was really great. It was everything good about ECW without all of the downsides. I don't think it should be done often, but given the 2 participants it makes sense. The wrestlers cheering Mankind and UT on was pretty cool. I really liked Paul Bearer's heel turn, but it didn't seem as impactful to the crowd as it should have been. The druids after were a neat touch.- 17 replies

I liked this match quite a bit, despite Shawn's sloppiness. The rest of the show was kind of a phoned in Raw trying to get Crush and Farooq over with extended squashes of established guys. Without this match and the other 2 segments that have topics it would have been pretty hard to watch. That being said, there was enough here to warrant more Shawn/Owen matches on PPV. Wasn't there a deal where Shawn famously decided he wouldn't work Owen after the screwjob or something?

Not an Ahmed fan, but I did feel for the guy. And he was super over going into this. There is the chance that he did have a great career without some of the bad luck.

I really like this as a different way of keeping the fans interested in Bret. It's one of the least pro wrestling interviews ever, but it works so well.

[1996-08-12-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall & Kevin Nash
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
I'll third (or whatever) Hogan being the highlight here. And I agree with Sleeze. This is too normal WCW for the NWO. If you get a chance to watch the full Nitro, the crowd is awesome and well worth watching the whole show for.- 6 replies

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Chris Benoit vs Dean Malenko
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Very NJ style match with not even a lot of the juniors stuff involved. Probably the wrong crowd for it. Then we go into OT. If you put this in front of a wrestling crowd these guys might have gotten somewhere. Somebody should have called an audible at some point.- 18 replies

Hogan having the Booty Man beat up is definitely a nice to the NWO angle. It proves that they are willing to take it a step beyond the Horsemen and betray even their own friends. Cool angle.

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Scott Hall & Kevin Nash vs Sting & Lex Luger
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Patrick's "accidental" influence of the finish was pretty good booking in retrospect. If you're going to take over a wrestling company, owning the head referee doesn't hurt. -
As much as I am not a Shawn critic, this was good interview. He comes across as a regular guy and somewhat likeable.

Wonderful angle that goes nowhere, but man do I wish it had. Flair as an offensive force to be reckoned with is always awesome to watch.

Even if the NWO stuff leading to them debuting in the ring was great, this was better. I haven't watched near as much wrestling as some of the folks callign it the greatest angle of all time, but I don't disagree one bit. Every part of it felt real while watching. Even though I know it's not. The match was really good sans Luger and Mongo's horrible sequence. And you know what? This is more evidence that Benoit was absolutely not held down. Nor was Eddie. They were part of the defining early moment of the NWO. On purpose.

Gonna disagree on really good match. Shine was okay at best. Heat was sorta mishandled at first, but they got it going. Hot tag was the best part. That outfit Simmons/Farooq was in was absolutely awful. Like most of this episode of Raw. Beyond the fun cake angle (which had it's downsides based on location) and Goldust having a pretty good squash match, it was a real stinker. I suppose ME tag match was okay-ish when compared to most of the Raw matches of late. Will disagree on Billy also. He's not ready for main events yet, but you use what you got.

Fun way to open the show for sure. Maybe next time don't do it at ringside. Stone Cold on commentary rightly rips on the idea while Mero and the Goon are wrestling later of having frosting all over the ringside mats. Which of course the Goon with his ridiculously skinny soled boots can't actually manuever on.

I'll agree on the back suplex botch. Very ugly. Even so, Mongo really is in way over his head and acquits himself pretty well given the circumstances. After watching most of 96 so far, Benoit had no glass ceiling at all. He was given all kinds of opportunities. That he ended up temporarily on the midcard during the NWO angle is not necessarily a personal thing. A lot of the WCW midcard got lost in that shuffle. For the match overall, perfectly fine extended heat with one of those shmozz endings that need to happen on WCW TV. Seeing Macho get part of his money back is kida fun too.

Bubba is so damn good. I don't even mind Luger taking the night off for the most part here. I don't like how little Bubba/Ray Traylor was actually used (and how badly often enough) in WCW. Here he kills his cred to the point where he is going to be a non-factor in storylines by shaking hands with Hogan. Graet angle and promo though. No complaints at all there.
