[1996-12-23-WWF-Raw] Rocky Maivia vs Salvatore Sincere
dawho5 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in December 1996
I have to say that I'd take Marlena over both Sunny and Sable at this point. She looks less like your standard WWE eye candy and more like a regular woman who keeps herself in good shape. The match was nothing special, but Rocky seems like a guy the crowd want to respond to. I think they were chanting for Sunny in there (which can easily be misconstrued into Rocky). The floatover DDT is a highlight though, something far from normal in a match on Raw at the time. -
[1996-12-16-WWF-Raw] Interview: Bret Hart / Steve Austin vs Vader
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
I loved all of this for reasons mentioned above. I really didn't get Vince's covering for Shawn though. Shawn's involvement led directly to Bret getting powerbombed. It's pretty difficult to make a case that Shawn didn't cost Bret the match. Either way, the WWF is starting to look stronger with their main event than Nitro indeed. The nWo is starting it's gradual decline and WWF has set themselves up with super-hot main events for a while.- 11 replies

[1996-12-16-WWF-Raw] Billy Gunn vs Bart Gunn
dawho5 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in December 1996
To me what they did here smacks of desperation & the stuff that got them where they are in the first place. First, you open the show with Bret inserting himself in the SCSA (their hottest new star) match against Vader because he's pissed that everyone continues to involve themselves in his business. Then you put these two on in the main event instead of flip-flopping those two matches, which would drive ratings up and help you fight WCW. All so you can run an angle with 2 fake wives of midcarders that nobody is really invested in based on a move you see every week on both shows. I know injuries happen on basic stuff, but this is just a horrible idea that needed to be scrapped before it was discussed. -
[1996-12-16-WCW-Nitro] Scott Hall & Kevin Nash vs Meng & Barbarian
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
The nWo starts it's long process of bloating itself AND WCW guys are still on Sting even after he lays out nWo Sting on the same show. Some of the worse aspects of WCW booking are starting to rear their ugly heads. I assume the whole "nWo taking over the announce booth" thing over the last few weeks was some kind of way of getting their announcers in line for the Souled Out PPV as well as demoing the idea of an entire nWo TV show?- 6 replies

[1996-12-16-WCW-Nitro] Arn Anderson vs Kevin Sullivan

This was an awesome match. Great punches from both and the all-time best tree of woe counter. Sorry to see Arn go.- 12 replies

I can't understand why they continued with confusion over the fake Sting. Cool spot with the DDT though, big pop too.

I'll go with great match on this one. If only for Regal's killer selling even while he was on offense. Tremendous TV match that really had me cursing the commercial break.

[1996-12-15-WWF-It's Time] Flash Funk vs Leif Cassidy
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
Flash Funk's entrance is indeed endless. Too much of this match is the guy taking the move waiting way too long for it to get there. the belly to belly over the buckle is really impressive for sure. I suppose this is the WWF's counter to the WCW cruiserweights? It's got it's own flavor, but they don't quite have the idea right. The horrible gimmicks definitely don't help.- 10 replies

Putting Bret with Sid makes sense due to Sid having the title. That being said, it's much less of a personal issue for either of them as Sid still has Shawn angry with him and Bret has yet to really deal with Stone Cold. I suppose you want to try and put Bret back into the title picture ASAP after Shawn's reign fizzled out. The way they did it was less than ideal, but leads them to their comeback anyway.

[1996-12-02-WCW-Nitro] Roddy Piper beats up Eric Bischoff
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
I'm sure Bischoff was both thrilled by how over his heel persona was and maybe regretting it a bit for being doused in what one would hope is water. This segment was the first WCW "victory" over the nWo. And they sorely needed one. They got it right as far as location too. The fans were absolutely behind Piper and Greene.- 7 replies

[1996-12-02-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Ric Flair & Roddy Piper
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
I enjoyed this more than the opening promo. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Flair with something to accomplish is really good to great. And he wants to tell you how much Hogan sucks and Piper is the guy to beat him. Really liked this.- 12 replies

I enjoyed this mainly for the crowd. Piper went a little too off the rails for me, but that's Piper. He's absolutely great on the mic, but I think he's better with less time to ramble.

The nWo commentary was pretty good for the most part. They maybe went a little far with the self-congratulating heel smart-assery, but they put over all the workers. The Benoit/Regal match was really good.

I was thinking about specifically Bagwell being in the nWo today. If he had turned heel by joining forces with Scott Norton and they had been a midcard heel tag team both Vicious & Delicious and the nWo would have been better off. Bischoff is indeed way more natural in this role. He would get better, but he already has eclipsed his entire announcing career.

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Hulk Hogan vs Roddy Piper Contract Signing
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
What a great angle. Piper's face while Hogan was demanding to see the hip was amazing in so many ways. All the while never losing the intensity and hatred of Hogan.- 8 replies

[1996-11-24-WCW-World War III] Rey Misterio Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
If you watch their Japanese matches this one isn't too far off from those. Their match is Dragon beating the shit out of Rey while Rey peppers in hope spots. I tend to think dragon hit too many finishers here, but that seemed to work in Rey's favor as the match progressed.- 18 replies

[1996-11-18-WCW-Nitro] Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff / DDP and the NWO
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Hogan bullying Bischoff (not really though) into saying bad things about Piper was really great. What a tremendous heel moment. This whole DDP thing is so good. I know the nWo eventually goes so far the wheels and most of the car comes off. When they were fresh and hitting on all cylinders it was something special. There are 2 distinct parts of the nWo though. Hall & Nash with their buddy Syxx and the Hogan crew. Giant seems to hang out with both.- 8 replies

I really liked this. Piper should be the focus here, telling the TV audience he hasn't been ducking Hogan. Bischoff's role in this is not necessarily the centerpiece here. Not yet.

[1996-11-18-WCW-Nitro] The Outsiders and Faces of Fear

Nash really does impress here. There are reasons he is over at the time and a memorable part of the nWo. I just wish we had seen more of this Hall & Nash as time went on.- 7 replies

Really fun brawl between two guys who seem like they are coming into their own on TV over the last 6 months or so. I'll agree it slows down once it goes into the ring, but it is never actively anything but good.

[1996-11-18-WWF-Raw] Faarooq vs Savio Vega
dawho5 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in November 1996
That blown superplex spot was really scary as far as looking like somebody was gonna get hurt. Did that tease with Sunny being Farooq's former manager ever go anywhere? Also, wasn't the NoD based on the Black Panthers? So many questions about how this thing is starting. -
[1996-11-17-WWF-Survivor Series] Bret Hart vs Steve Austin
dawho5 replied to a topic in November 1996
I really loved this. The Mania match is better if my recollection is correct, but that is in no way an insult to this match. I think this match helps set the table for the Mania match more than anything. They started out with the "who is the better wrestler" storyline being put over strong. Then Stone Cold got frustrated at getting the short end of the technical wrestling and just started beating Bret up. Which makes sense given that Bret has been training for this match where? Storyline would have to be the Hart Dungeon, so why wouldn't he win the technical stuff. Bret has to come back using more brawling tactics to show he is game on that side of things. Then the indecisive finish leaves you wondering if Stone Cold didn't miss out on a few opportunities he should have capitalized on.- 18 replies

[1996-11-11-WCW-Nitro] The Outsiders and Larry Zbyszko
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Tony cracking up at the Caddyshack joke was pretty great. Hall and Zbysko feuding was weird at the time, but by the time we get there I have the sneaking suspicion I'll like it more than a lot of the other nWo stuff going on.- 7 replies

DDP finally getting his due is great. He has been getting over in a big way lately. The Diamond Cutter is part of it. Him clearly putting in the work to get better and consistently putting on one of the better Nitro matches against sometimes questionable opponents helps a lot too. He'll never be the best in-ring technician to ever live, but he clearly knows how to work a crowd and get himself over. Which is something WCW sorely needs on the babyface side. They are counting on Jarrett to get over as a babyface for crying out loud.
