  1. it's hard not to see that stuff after this forum spent days freaking out over the possibility of HHH & Sting making the 100, and Kurt Angle actually making the 100
  2. the Von Erichs are a bit tricky because it's harder to think of any one pairing as a "real" tag team - normally they're viewed as one giant unit. combine that with many on this board not caring for World Class in general, and i'm not surprised at all. also agree with goc on the Guerreros, it's a pretty comparable result to the singles guys whose cases mostly rely on NWA On Demand (e.g. Gino & Lothario). that site hasn't gained enough traction yet to singlehandedly push guys into the top 100 singles or top 25 tag teams.
  3. i've long felt that goofy gimmicks for jobbers & undercarders were kinda reaching for "wrestlecrap". i care a lot more if it's someone we're supposed to take seriously. i unironically love mr. hole-in-one, for instance. beaver cleavage, on the other hand, i'm more on board with because it wasn't just the one match. there were weeks of promo vids for the guy, so i say it counts.
  4. honestly, people outside the wrestling bubble don't think of WWF/E as "New York". by and large, all pro wrestling is still seen as stupid shit for rednecks, and i suspect that's why that business has more anxiety over Southernness than most. also, the South does carry strong negative stigmas in politics, probably more so now than in previous generations. once it came out that Hillary Clinton drew far more primary votes than Bernie Sanders among black people in Southern states, lots of the most obnoxious Bernie supporters were saying this was because those Southerners were "low-information voters". as patronizing and racist as you could argue that narrative is, it was quite a popular one among younger people! the South is seen as a major obstacle to many causes widely supported by gen-Xers & millennials, so there's real reason to avoid associating oneself with it.
  5. i could totally see cesaro being good but "too euro" for vince & co.
  6. you'd probably get more stuff like the New Day if guys could ad-lib freely, as they seem to have been coming up with a fair amount of their own material. for some here that's a "be careful what you wish for" deal, for the majority it probably shows why they wish that could be the case.
  7. thread needs more chikara & kaiju big battel i mean what wrestling videos have gone viral in recent years? the joey ryan dickplex and those hypnotists. there's room for a major player to get in on some of that imo
  8. there's a somewhat related fun fact i remember from back in the day... so the WWF website used to have photo galleries where you had to click on a separate page for each photo. sometime in '99 they had one of Vader doing the Vaderbomb, and the website title for that pic was "I'm a Big Fat Piece of Crap". you could only see the website title at the top of your browser, so it was a lot less obvious than if they had stuck it on the page itself. was Russo involved with the website stuff? if not i dunno who it would be.
  9. i feel like the best stretch of booking in the modern era was NJPW's handling of the Okada push. that's something that absolutely shouldn't have worked on paper - Okada was a young lion then a TNA jobber, and all of a sudden people were supposed to buy him as a threat to the IWGP title. and well, you read the WON and you know how it went!
  10. this is a perfect example of the sort of cultural divide (i guess this is more accurate than "generational") the New Day arguments bring up. my social media feeds completely mark the fuck out for stuff like that promo, or New Day talking about Street Fighter on TV. that's pretty much what they want more of wrestling to be!
  11. i've seen the argument before that Cena's STF is that loose on purpose, so kids won't kill each other if they imitate it. like maybe he hinted at that in an interview or something? i forget exactly
  12. yea, these posts have been sweet and i'm excited for you to tackle the top 25!
  13. fakeplastictrees: this is a reeeeaaaaallllly tricky road to go down, as it can easily come off as policing black people. in that post, i saw a lot of the same attitudes that lead women to shame other women for porn & sex work ("living up to the stereotype" etc.). heck, there's a real-world example of that in wrestling: Rocky Johnson hating Tony Atlas because of his shuckin' & jivin'
  14. Irish wrestlers are probably the closest thing you'd get to a "White Wrestler" character. the obvious compare & contrast is pre-mohawk Sheamus vs. Finn Balor & Becky Lynch. also Steamboat's race absolutely mattered a lot - do you think there's any way he gets a martial-arts gimmick if not for that? just look at Bad News Brown, a legit successful martial artist who got stuck with a "dirty street fighter from Harlem" character because he was black and not Asian.
  15. this is more or less where i'm at, but i'd like to take it a step further: i feel similarly about psychology. specifically, i don't see unfocused strategy as an inherent problem. i've seen guys who make $10 million a year screw up the most basic principles of sports tactics, and don't understand why people assume pro wrestlers shouldn't make mistakes there. working the arm then switching to the back halfway through the match is perfectly reasonable in my eyes - plan A shouldn't always work!
  16. i feel like where you stand on the Brock match says a lot here. many felt like it was a contender for best WM main event ever, and hardly anyone on that roster besides Reigns could've had that match - it was so dependent on violence and physical credibility, and those are the areas that separate Reigns from an Orton or what have you.
  17. not so sure the top of the tag ballot is any less obvious, though i guess there's the 2 versions of the MX to split votes. it's going to be them, the Rock 'n Rolls, and Holy Demon Army for sure. this is definitely a more "hardcore" voting base compared to the singles list, so i think it's easier to predict overall. top 10 prediction in no particular order: - both MX teams - RnR Express - Kawada/Taue - Arn/Tully - Fantastics - Rockers - Misawa/Kobashi - The Funks - Misawa/Akiyama the last one i'm least confident in, feel like the first Misawa team will do better thanks to name value. both were in The Greatest Tag Matches of All Time though. don't think there are enough "outside" voters here to push the Hart Foundation or Bulldogs into the top 10 - if this got the kind of turnout that the singles list did, i'd have both of them as locks. the Steiners feel similar, but for some reason i think they'll do a bit better. Choshu/Yatsu is an intriguing dark horse to me, and i could also see Doc/Gordy even though they aren't intriguing in the slightest. also lucha obviously gets systematically screwed here by being so trios-heavy, but less obvious is how Japanese wrestling also suffers a lot. they tend not to have many teams of tag specialists the way the US does, and they tend not to keep the same native teams together for years on end. this means that lots of their best tags don't feel like "real" tag teams to us Americans, and explains why we see Kawada/Taue as a level above any other JP team (because they actually did have an American career arc to go along with all the ***** matches).
  18. dang that "top 10 votes only" list is the coolest one! like that seems to give the best "feel" of the tastes of the most active participants? less lucha on that one though, which speaks to Dylan's point about lucha fans not getting behind anyone to the degree that WOS fans get behind Breaks & Grey as a cut above the rest.
  19. well, if the person transitions they risk getting banned from Facebook for not using their old name! no joke, that happens and has really done a lot to push trans people toward Twitter and what have you instead away on vacation as this board gets started...i'll make effort posts here eventually, i swear!
  20. yea this board in general has always been high on Reigns relative to the rest of the internet, Jimmy. hell, the Political Hit theory came out of here because of how much people respect his ability. the Reigns hate mostly comes from the kind of people who still judge wrestlers by the number of different moves they use per match. that's the majority of online fans but what can ya do
  21. i mentioned Punch-Out in another thread, which leads to something worth mentioning here. those games are at least as outlandish as pro wrestling with their ethnic stereotypes, but i think the main reason people are cool with that is because they're more funny asides to the characters. Don Flamenco may be a ladies' man who dances with a rose in his mouth before fights, but he's also a smart & skilled boxer. compare that to Kamala, or (to bring this outside of race but same idea) Eugene once they forgot he was supposed to be a wrestling savant.

    My GWE WON Awards

i'd be most interested in asking everyone for their greatest discovery during the project. i noticed a few people saying exactly that about Bockwinkel in other threads, and would expect Casas & Breaks to get mentioned a good bit as well.
  23. yep, seconding overbooked here. that's not mutually exclusive with the goal of being a safe space!
  24. yea Stacey, you'd dig Lucha Underground i think. it's outright presented as a fantasy world where magic superpowers are a thing, so that's made it a lot easier for your typical fan to buy into the intergender stuff. even then, though, there was a huge backlash against Sexy Star winning the title IIRC. once again i'm busy all day and can't really contribute here, so i won't rush out a half-assed post this time. just one thing: i strongly feel that men should not call themselves feminists, because it's not our struggle and we can never fully understand it. that's some co-opting on our part imo
  25. i've actually been thinking about this a lot lately because i have ideas for a similar project with arcade games. it would be a shameless ripoff of the PWO yearbooks, but with MAME ROMs for each year and people giving their thoughts as they play them. i just have no idea what the central hub for something like that would be...yall here are lucky.
