Bob Caudle: Welcome ladies and gentlemen to Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling! I am Bob Caudle alongside David Crockett. David, tonight is the night, we have the FIRST ROUND of the NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament! David Crockett: Bob, you can feel it here in the arena. We have got a huge show and some of the biggest names in wrestling are here tonight. I am really excited to see how it all turns out. Bob: Well tonight fans we have four scheduled tag team matches including a special message from the two teams that got first round byes. David: That’s right Bob. The Andersons, Gene and Lars along with the Midnight Express both received byes due to a random drawing… Bob: What luck they have… and that may just drive them right to the finals… David: Also tonight, the Nature Boy Ric Flair is going to be here and I am told he has got some words for a certain man… Bob: We all know that Flair has had issues with the Iron Sheik… perhaps we will hear more tonight. Right now though fans, we have got opening round action in the NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament… let’s take it to the ring! {We get an image showing the team and their respective promotion before each contest. Bob and David do a good job of really putting over these teams and their strengths along with keys to victory.} NWA WORLD TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT The British Bulldogs (Stampede) vs The Zambuie Express (Central States) {Two super-heavyweights vs two of the most technical wrestlers in the world for this one. These two teams kick things off for this tournament the right way. The Express is quick to show their dominance as the Bulldogs find themselves in a hole quickly. Dynamite tries to tag Davey but the Express breaks him down more and more. The Express throw Dynamite into the corner and then go for a double smash but Dynamite jumps up on the top rope and leaps over their heads and lands into a roll to tag in Davey Boy who comes in like a house of fire. He has got some huge clotheslines and then some rights and lefts. Dynamite is shaking the cobwebs out and tries to get back into the ring. Elijah goes for Dynamite who pulls the ropes down and he goes flying out of the ring. Davey and Dynamite then set up for a double dropkick on Kareem sending him out of the ring! The Dogs are celebrating for a moment but the Express aren’t done. They pull the Bulldogs out and the brawl ensues. The referee is counting and he is getting close! 7…8… Davey Boy moves as Elijah nails the ring post! Davey jumps back in the ring 9…10!! The Bulldogs have won it via count out! The crowd gives them a nice pop! Elijah and Kareem aren’t done yet; they are doubling up on Dynamite. Davey Boy comes after them as officials come out. This one has broken loose fans and we’ve just started! David and Bob put this over in a big way. More tag team tournament action when we come back!} *COMMERCIAL* Bob: What an encounter there David… the British Bulldogs were victorious but it was hard to tell. David: When you wrestle guys like the Express, anything can happen. I am sure it isn’t the last time we will see them here in Mid Atlantic. Bob: Well next in line for the Bulldogs will be the Andersons; we have a special word from them later on in the broadcast. David: I am sure that will be a classic. We will see that contest on the 23rd of July. Bob: We know another big contest for that card that we will be talking about later on in this broadcast. Fans it is time for more tournament action. Our next contest is one between two teams that are double tough. David: Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen are two of the toughest men in the world and perhaps the most dangerous! Bob: We will see them against two youngsters from Japan… Kawada and Misawa. These guys have the ability to be huge players David. David: They are going to have something to prove here tonight… fans let’s go to the ring! NWA WORLD TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT Toshiaki Kawada & Mitsuhara Misawa (All-Japan) vs Stan Hansen & Bruiser Brody (Free) {My, oh, my! Brody and Hansen come out to the ring twirling chains and bull ropes. The fans are screaming as they come down the aisle. Kawada and Misawa stand tall as they represent All-Japan. The bell rings and this one quickly turns into a Texas Tornado contest! The referee is trying to get order but as he gets Misawa out of the ring, Hansen and Brody just go to work on Kawada! He does some no selling and comes back at Hansen who then gives him a potato right to the mush! Kawada with some forearms drives Hansen back before getting a tag to Misawa who comes in and Brody is there with a boot right to the face! The referee comes over to back him off but then Hansen comes with a stiff boot and Misawa goes out of the ring to the floor. Kawada joins him as they talk about something and then get back in the ring and this one is on! We have got a pier six brawl but it doesn’t go too long. Kawada gets kicked out of the ring and then Hansen and Brody grab the chain and take turns cracking Misawa! The bell is sounding and it is a DQ! Kawada and Misawa have won this but I don’t know if they will be able to move on! Brody and Hansen are going CRAZY! David and Bob apologize to the fans as we cut to commercial!} *COMMERCIAL* {We return to MACW as we see a vignette from Dr. D Dave Schultz. This time Schultz is in a bar drinking a beer. He then is shown playing pool. We see a guy bump into him while he shoots and then doesn’t apologize. The guy then throws a beer in Dr. D’s face! Dr. D snaps and throws some huge rights and lefts and then back drops another guy on the pool table! Dr. D then looks around as the other patrons back off. Dr. D breaks the pool cue on his knee and walks out the door! DR. D WILL BE HERE NEXT WEEK!} The Tonga Kid vs Billy Zane {Another fun showcase for the Tonga Kid who is on a nice hot streak here in MACW. David and Bob put over his wins at the house shows and say there are big things in store for him. He wins this one with a big Flying Cross Body for the 1…2…3! Bob and David then put over the two teams that received byes in the tournament as we have pre-recorded comments from them in regards to the tournament!} Gene Anderson: Long has the Anderson name been synonymous with greatness and tag team wrestling. I know exactly what those tag team titles feel like and I want that feeling back. That’s why the Minnesota Wrecking Crew is back in the NWA and back in Mid Atlantic… we want the tag team titles. Lars Anderson: We know that it is not luck that won is the first round bye… it was our status. The name Anderson means something important… it is something that gets someone far in life, especially in wrestling. Soon, the world will remember exactly why the Andersons are the best. Randy Rose: When it comes to tag team wrestling and the best tag team in the world, look no further than the Midnight Express. Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance invited only the best… well the best is here. Dennis Condry: Without a doubt brother. You see all over the world they are talking about this big tournament. What better way for us to get those belts than by getting that first round bye… then… haha… then we go on to do some big things. Randy Rose: Now we know what it means to be world champions…w e will do whatever it takes and stop at nothing. Dennis: There is no one better to bet on than the Midnight Express… you can take that to the bank! *COMMERCIAL* Bob: Well David, we have heard from some of the other competitors for the NWA tag team titles… I must say, with those byes, these guys will have some fresh bodies going into this second round. David: Especially after our first two matches. Heck, those guys barely made it out alive! Bob: Fans we want to remind you that this Saturday from Greensboro, you will see two more tag team title tournament contests when Joe Lightfoot and Bob Bradley take on the Vachons. Also on that card, we will see Tommy Rogers and Hector Guerrero take on El Gran Apollo and Jose Lothario! David: I am really looking forward to that matchup. I think Rogers and Guerrero will have their work cut out for them. Bob: Well the team of Kawada and Misawa are going to be here next week, and they will be facing the winners of this next contest. More tag team action, let’s head to the ring! NWA WORLD TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT Barry Darsow & Brad Rhenigans (JCP) vs The Russians (JCP) {Another interesting contest with these four rough and tough individuals. Markoff and Volkoff are really working well as a unit as David and Bob put over their recent success. Rhenigans and Darsow are slowly coming together but when the time comes for a big tag, Rhenigans goes for Darsow who then turns his back! Darsow turns his back on Rhenigans who can’t believe it! Nikolai Volkoff runs in and nails a big knee right to Rhenigan’s skull! Rhenigans is slow to his feet and then Nikolai with a RUSSIAN SICKLE! 1….2…3! The Russians are moving on! They celebrate in the ring while Darsow watches on. The arena is filled with boos! David and Bob cannot believe this!} *COMMERCIAL* NWA WORLD TAG TEAM TOURNAMENT The Fabulous Freebirds (JCP) vs the Invaders (WWC) {Our final first round contest comes with one of the most popular teams in wrestling right now as the Freebirds take on the Invaders. These two Invaders know what they are doing and Hayes and Roberts appear to be outmatched. Gordy is outside the ring cheering them on as is the crowd and then Hayes comes with some huge rights and lefts and then moonwalks for another snap left hand that sends Invader #1 back! #3 comes in the ring and works over Hayes but he makes a tag to Roberts who is firing on all cylinders! The fans are really going wild here as #1 comes back in and he and #3 are doubling up on Roberts. They go for a huge double clothesline but Roberts ducks and here comes Hayes with a tackle and #3 goes out of the ring to the floor. Roberts then ducks around for a school boy and the 1…2…3! The Freebirds have won it! The crowd explodes as the Freebirds join David and Bob…} Bob: Welcome in here gentlemen… I dare say that tag team gold is in your sights! Michael Hayes: Lemme tell you something Bob Caudle…that gold is in our sights… we are on a gold hunt if you will! It started tonight and next week, we will be here LIVE and in LIVING COLOR bringing down the house all the way to Badstreet! My big, bad, brother Terry Gordy is the Television Champion right now, and there ain’t a man alive who is going to take that gold is there brother? Terry Gordy: That’s right Michael. You see, all over the world people are talking about the Freebirds, they are talking about this TV title and those Tag Team Titles. They know when it is all said and done, the Freebirds are going to have the titles and if someone gets in our way… it is going to be a bad day for them! David: Well gentlemen, next week you will be facing either the Vachons or Lightfoot and Bradley… Buddy Roberts: It doesn’t matter who wins that match David Crockett. In one week, we will be right here doing the exact same thing we’ve been doing all along! Michael Hayes: The thing about it is this David… there is one, two, or three men that can go in that ring with the Freebirds. {The crowd then pops when none other than Ric Flair walks out!} Bob: Wait just a second… Ric Flair… Ric Flair: Hold it there Bob. I am not out here to ruffle any feathers… I wanted to come out… to my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina… and say WOOOOO! Bob Caudle… David Crockett… I am out here to lay it on the line… On the 23rd of July…we will be right back here in the Coliseum… and Iron Sheik… I know you are out there pal… We are going to be LIVE. A Steel Cage surrounding the ring… my hometown fans are going to be there going WILD! Now Michael, Terry, Buddy, haha… we have been on the road for a while and I know you will be right there watching it all go down… Michael Hayes: Ric… you and I went to the limit the other night in Charleston… that cemented it… you ever need some back up… you just call down to Badstreet and the Freebirds will be there… {We then hear a huge ruckus as stuff comes flying into the set. IT IS THE IRON SHEIK! He is being held back by officials as he is yelling at Flair who is yelling back! They will be back in Charlotte on the 23rd inside the STEEL CAGE! GET PUMPED!}

It is an interesting and fun concept, but as booker of JCP, we kind of get the shaft due to the fact that MLW is doing pretty good and would definitely be a promotion running for some time. There could be a different way to pair up and/or randomize it somehow. If it was reality, JCP would be up against Georgia, Mid South, Florida, and some of those other territories that they absorbed over the years while the WWF really took over the northern promotions. A good start though.

It comes down to who has the "written" type of a contract. If Portland has the "rights" they should go to draft, but if they are an "open" contract, it is a loss for that promotion. Again, this is just the opinion of one person and after going through some stuff like this before, it will be good to have a precedent set early.

Just for opinion's sake, would you be willing to give up two guys from your roster in order to get them full time?

Saturday July 9th 1983 MACW live from the Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina Hector Guerrero & Tommy Rogers defeated Bill White & Tony Zane The Tonga Kid defeated Rudy Diamond Joe Lightfoot & Bob Bradley defeated Tiger Williams and Steve Estes The Vachons & The Iron Sheik defeated Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts, & Brad Rhenigans NWA TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP Terry Gordy © defeated Chris Markoff Ric Flair defeated Nikolai Volkoff MAIN EVENT The Iron Sheik won a battle royal after last eliminating Ric Flair. Sheik had been previously eliminated but due to a brawl between the Russians and the Freebirds that took up the referees, Sheik sneaked back in the ring and eliminated Flair. Flair chased him off and challenged him to a cage match in two weeks!

In our discussions, you know how big of a fan I am of Tully Blanchard. He is such a great foundation piece for a promotion. As the JCP booker, it is good to see Casey in such a prominent role, something that will be great to utilize when we get him back. That along with Khan who is without a doubt one of the most highly touted heels in the world at this point. Keep doing work!

I don't think I am willing to give up what we have in JCP for what he has. I would say, and it is just my opinion, but if he is done and no one wants to take it over, his roster should be added to the individuals available in August. I think it would bump that little draft up with some of those guys and if it is a random draw, it should be enough to give everyone one more full timer on their roster. Just rolling the roster over to someone else doesn't seem to be too fair, but again, just my opinion.

So Portland is up for grabs?

Not yet. It will come with a few more guys in the fall. We would need about 5 more guys regularly

David, it feels good to be here tonight in Norfolk for an exciting night of action. David Crockett: That’s right Bob. Tonight we’ve got a full schedule of matches… plus we have footage of a huge contest that happened just 6 days ago for the television championship! Bob: That’s right David. Here in Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling we have seen an influx of talent over the last month or so and some huge names have come to the area. David: That’s right Bob, guys like The Iron Sheik, The Freebirds, the Vachons. Some of the biggest names in wrestling are right here in Mid Atlantic! Bob: Well fans, as such with new talent, anything can happen. For instance, just this past weekend we had a huge title contest between Terry Gordy and the Great Kabuki! David: Oh what a night it was in Greensboro. So many fans just going wild and this was a main event anywhere in the count and they got to see history made. Let’s take a look at footage from that live event from Greensboro! {The video cuts to a live crowd as we see a clipped version of a Television Championship Match between The Great Kabuki and Terry Bam Bam Gordy. We see high spots from both competitors including some hard hitting power moves from Gordy and a Green Mist by Kabuki. Thankfully Michael Hayes is at ringside to wipe the mist away before Kabuki goes to finish. He sets up Gordy for a Thrust Kick but Gordy grabs it and turns him around and nails an ASIATIC SPIKE before turning him around for a POWERBOMB! 1….2…3! WE HAVE A NEW TELEVISION CHAMPION! We see Hayes and Roberts run into the ring and celebrate as Gordy holds the title high in the air. We cut back to the arena where the Freebirds are standing with Bob and David.} Bob: Well Terry Gordy, let me be the first to congratulate you on this big victory. Terry Gordy: Well lemme tell you something Bob Caudle, it takes a helluva man to wake up and put down ol Bam Bam and this title proves that I am the best wrestler on television. This is a call out to everyone in Jim Crockett Promotions, everyone to the NWA, and any wrestler in the world… you wanna take a shot at ol Bam Bam, just sign on the dotted line daddy! David: Well Michael Hayes, we are looking forward to the announcement the NWA world Tag Team Title tournament later on in this broadcast… how do you feel the Freebirds will do. Michael Hayes: David Crockett… you and all the other big wigs out there in television land listen up jack. You are looking at a team that is so fabulous; our future is paved in gold. You see this tag team title tournament was made for the Freebirds. When all is said and done, Terry has the TV title and we’ve got the Tag Titles… you are looking at the best team the world has ever seen! Bob: Well gentlemen you are in action right now… let’s take it to the ring! The Freebirds vs Tony Zane & Rudy Diamond {A pretty simple showcase for The Freebirds as Hayes and Roberts are in action. Roberts does a lot of the legwork while Hayes comes in for the glory. A NASTY DDT on Rudy Diamond is all she wrote for the 1…2…3! Bob and David put over the tournament which we will have more details on in moments!} *COMMERCIAL* {MACW returns with an interesting vignette as we see Dr. D Dave Schultz is shown out in the woods. He is shown chopping down a tree and brining wood to a cabin. He is shown sharpening huge hunting knives. He is then shown drinking a couple of beers as he plays with his dog. He looks at the camera and smashes the can on his forehead! We cut back to David and Bob.} Bob: How about that David, Dr. D Dave Schultz… what a character. David: One of the most dangerous men in all of wrestling. I am interested to see how he does here in the Mid Atlantic Area. Bob: He is going to have some tough competition. Right now fans, we have the debut of a new competitor… he is a young prospect from the South Pacific. His name is the Tonga Kid! David: The thing about this guy is his speed and intensity, not to mention he wrestles BAREFOOT! Bob: He is truly a tough competitor; let’s see what he has in the ring! The Tonga Kid vs Doug Vines {Tonga kid comes out to a nice ovation. He is a young, good-looking kid who has a lot of spunk. He and Doug vines have a nice contest but it is the Tonga Kid who comes out looking good. We see a huge Top Rope Flying Cross Body for the 1….2…3!! Tonga with a nice win and the crowd loves it. He works the fans as we cut to David and Bob who are with the Iron Sheik…} Bob: What a debut match there for the Tonga Kid… fans we want to welcome in right now, the Iron Sheik. Sheik, you are known around the world as one of the most dangerous and strongest competitors in the world, we haven’t see you in a while though, where have you been? The Iron Sheik: What has been said about me is no lie. I am the strongest man in the NWA. I am the most dangerous man in the NWA. I have been in the sands of Iran training for this moment. I come to show the world why Iron Sheik is number 1! David: Well what is your purpose here in the Mid Atlantic area? The Iron Sheik: I tell you David Crockett… I am here for one reason… I want that United States title. I am going to take that United States title… I am going to spit on it! (He spits in the ground!) I am going to make it Iran title! I will be champion of Iran and United States! Iran number 1! The Sheik number 1! {Bob and David are displeased by his message and send it to commercial!} *COMMERCIAL* {We return to MACW with a promo for the upcoming live events from Charleston SC on Friday the 8th, Charlotte NC the 9th, and Greenvile SC on the 10th! We cut to the ring for more action!} Barry Darsow vs Bill White {Barry Darsow comes out here and attempts to get the ovation of the crowd but it is lukewarm at best. He is just a bland fellow who gets a small notion from the fans but nothing offensive. Bill White gets a little heat with the crowd but it Darsow who fires back and then comes with a huge POWERSLAM for the 1…2…3! Darsow then walks by the set and we see Nikolai Volkoff and Chris Markoff standing by… Darsow looks mesmerized! The crowd is booing up a storm at Volkoff and Markoff!} Bob: Fans welcome back in here. We are joined right now by The Russians Volkoff and Markoff… gentlemen, you two are going to be involved in the big NWA world tag team title tournament and you have held the belts before… how will this tournament be different? Flair works the knee over as he has got the crowd solidly behind him. In the end it is the figure four and Ben has no choice but to give up. David: Ric Flair saying he is next in line for the NWA World Title… when we come back folks… we will have the big reveal of the World Tag Team Title Tournament! *COMMERCIAL* {MACW returns with a special video highlighting former NWA tag team champions. Bob and David are standing by…} Bob: Fans the moment you’ve been waiting for is here. David, let’s explain how this tournament is going to work… David: Well this is going to take place over the month of July and matches will be shown here on television and at our live arena shows. The first round will be next week, with the quarter finals being the following week, the semi-finals on the 28th of July and the finals will be on the 30th of July with new champions being crowned. Bob: Well fans next week we’ve got some huge matches lined up… along with these matches, there are two teams that will be getting first round byes due to a random draw. Those two teams are the Andersons Lars and Gene, and the Midnight Express. Let’s take a look at this bracket! In the opening round, former Mid Atlantic mainstays, Lars and Gene Anderson will receive a bye. The British Bulldogs, Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid, a young team out of the UK with tremendous talent will be taking on the ever dangerous Zambuie Express. Will speed overcome size or will the strength of the Express be too much for the dogs to handle? Japanese Young Lions Misawa and Kawada travel from All-Japan pro wrestling to take on two of the most dangerous men in all of wrestling, Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen. Word has it that Hansen and Brody are looking to settle the score here in the US and aren’t afraid to take the fight all the way back to Japan if necessary. Barry Darsow will be teaming with All-American Brad Rhenigans to take on the Russians. It will be a cold war classic with these two teams looking to settle the score and move forward in the tournament. Joe Lightfoot and Bob Bradley are looking to make an impact against the crazed duo of Mad Dog and Butcher Vachon in opening round action. The Fabulous Freebirds look to continue their winning ways on their path for gold against the Invaders who may prove to keep the birds grounded. Tommy Rogers & Hector Guerrero are two men who have a tremendous upside but they are going against two veterans who will stop at nothing to achieve tag team greatness in El Gran Apollo and Jose Lothario. Rounding out the first round, the Midnight Express will be receiving byes as they immediately move on to the second round. David: Well lemme tell you something Bob, what a tournament. 14 of the top teams from all over the world and a lot of those matches will be taking place right here next week! Bob: It is going to be a great night of action next week. Fans right now we’ve got a huge main event… kind of a preview of that tournament. Let’s head to the ring! MAIN EVENT Brad Rhenigans & Fantastic Tommy Rogers vs The Vachons {What a fun main event contest here with four stars of MACW. Bulldog and Mad Dog are vicious men here who stop at nothing to go after Rogers. Rhenigans comes in with a huge pop to bring some quick and powerful offense as the Vachons make him look good. Mad Dog goes and bites Tommy Rogers right above the eye and the fans in the crowd gasp! Butcher and Mad Dog then double up on Rhenigans while Rogers is being checked on by the referee. They pull Rhenigans outside of the ring and hit a DOUBLE SUPLEX ON THE CONCRETE FLOOR! The referee begins to shout at the Vachons but they are really putting the boots to Rhenigans as Tommy Rogers then gets on the apron and runs for a flying tackle! The referee has no choice but to call for the bell as this one has turned into a pier six brawl! Rhenigans gets back up to his feet but he is in a bad way as officials come out to push the Vachons back. They are nowhere near done and are looking for more. David and Jim put this over in a big way as they push the tournament next week here on MACW!}

MAIN EVENT FAN'S CHOICE Ric Flair defeated Michael Hayes with a roll up -This was a fan's choice match due to a call in response from last week's show. Hayes and Flair tore it up and then showed great respect for one another shaking hands at the conclusion of the contest.

Thursday July 7th 1983 MACW Television Taping from the Scope in Norfolk, Virginia Fans were treated to an exciting hour of taped action that will air this Saturday morning. Such stars as Ric Flair, the Freebirds, and the Tonga kid were in action. An exciting main event between Brad Rhenigans & Tommy Rogers and the Vachons excited the crowd and left everyone waiting for the NWA World Tag Team Title tournament as the pairings were also released on this episode.
