Guys, as a Buddy fan...FANTASTIC SHOW. And I will agree the 86 memphis feud with Lawler is on par with 87s Lawler/Idol/Rich I will say one thing: While I'm a huge Buddy fan, I'm still not convinced he was getting the title. I completely buy him being set up as a legit challenger, but still not buying him winning the title.

There was a story I remember from 95 where they put Hogan vs Kamala on the Sunday Main Event, which was shown live before a PPV, because they didn't want to pay him the $300k.

What?!!? lol. Seems like a lot of BS from Sullivan. I definitely don't buy that two million from PPV. I remember the sheets saying $300K for a PPV appearance (I can buy that).

Big difference is the fan reaction and the idea of the promotion being the number one babyface. Did any of the Memphis crowds (forget the never ending debate of how "smart" to the business they were back in the day) break out in chants of the promotion's intials the way fans would chant E-C-DUB! E-C-DUB! Even at non ECW events! As someone who went to the Louisville Gardens weekly...no, you'd never hear that (chants, etc). It was strictly "Go Jerry go!" or "go Bill go!". I'm trying to think the best way to describe it: it was like the fans were sucked into a time warp when they walked into the Gardens, locking them into a state of the 70s . If you beat Bill Dundee (especially by cheating), then by God, I'm jumping out of my seat, shooting you (the heel) the finger and saying "fuck you you mother fucking piece of shit", as your seven year old stood next to you, chocolate all over their face from eating their fudge bar. That was Memphis rasslin until it died.

Oh I agree. I don't get it if you're a wrestling fan (which we presume most wrestlers are), why aren't you watching everything. Maybe to pick up ideas, or spot talent, whatever.

I can look past that. (Back then) Most were on the road every day and probably didn't have time to watch the competition or have the Internet at their fingertips. Today, most only wrestle on weekends and can watch stuff on YouTube, Wwe.com.

Am I biased? Yes, but I'm going to say Louisville Gardens. It was a weekly stop for the Jarrett promotion (the last surviving "territory") and was the last good draw for the promotion (after Memphis was DOA).

I like this one better Matt. Lawler stated it was his idea for Hawk to no sell the piledriver to show how tough the Warriors were (no doubt Lawler saw tons of money). It was banned in the Jarrett territory, so it was rarely used. But when it was used, we (the fans in Jarrett's territory) knew this was a special match/angle because it was presented as the deadliest of deadly moves.

Just reading some stuff from Meltzer...seems like he had some big trouble in his life. Just never know how someone is behind closed doors. May he find the peace he was searching for.

Were you the one that first posted this story?!? It always stuck with me... So thanks to a friend of mine (thanks B.P.!) I recently got my hands on some old Observers going back to the mid-80's. I was looking at the April '84 issue, which was discussing the death of David Von Erich, and all of the hysteria surrounding his death and funeral with the fans (primarily the female fans) in the Dallas and North Texas area. So somehow, sandwiched in amongst all of this, is this piece about how crazed the female fans are about all of the Von Erich boys, and in particular Kerry. The article discusses Kerry's habit of walking to the ring at the Sportatorium to Rush's "Tom Sawyer", and how when he gets to ringside, he always picks a girl out and kisses her. So the article talks with this Dallas area woman who would watch this happen on a weekly basis who decided to go to the arena with her daughter (!!??) and by God get a kiss from Kerry Von Erich, wrestling superstar and sex symbol--to the woman and her daughter--which, just seems a tad creepy. Anyway, so the woman and her daughter (didn't say how old) go to what basically amounts to the "kay fabe parking lot" where the wrestlers park their cars and wait for Kerry...along with, according to the article, about 30 other women. So here comes Kerry, and he parks his car, gets out, slides across the hood of the car, holds out his arms and says: "Look at all the beautiful ladies!" At this point, apparently all the women rush in and Kerry begins giving each one a kiss. So the woman in the story, the one with the daughter, mentions that she is waiting patiently for her turn at kissing the Modern Day Warrior, and finally its her turn...and Kerry gives her what is, apparently, a pretty passionate kiss (must have been halfway decent looking). Anyway, the woman recounts how...as she is being kissed, she notices that....well, let's just say that it seems that old Kerry had just finished a bag of Dorito's before arriving to the building. And as Kerry pulls away, the woman is noticing that her mouth now tastes like a bag of Dorito's. And she is quoted as saying: "That was the best Dorito's I have had."

While Memphis was never the land of the Giants, what about Bill Dundee's heel work in the area.
