Between the Sheets #25 (January 5-11, 1994)
...TG replied to KrisZ's topic in Publications and Podcasts
A bit off-topic, but since it was brought up in this episode, can I throw some cold water on the Jimmy Valiant/glass coffee table story? I know Ricky Morton retweeted that cartoon, but the exact same urban legend goes around about Danny Thomas. (I don't have a specific link to point to, but just google "Danny Thomas glass coffee table" and pick one of the many, many results.) Unless that particular fetish is a lot more common than I thought, which is even more disturbing, when you think about it. -
I'm sure when New Day reunites in 2031 for nostalgia run they'll seem just as lame as Chris Jericho does 15 years past his prime. But the crowd gives him a great reception, and they seem to love that "rooty tooty booty" thing, so what are you gonna do?

Vince is of course in amazing shape, but man he looks every bit of 70 tonight. He's moving slowly, his hair is thinning and grayer than ever. Just kinda makes me sad - you know, the passing of time, etc. It gets us all, no matter how good our pharmacists are.
-
One other thing - Tiger Mask is working AAA? When did the New Japan-CMLL relationship start? I had understood that it was pretty long-standing, since the '80s.

Well, I loved this. Maybe it's just three yearbooks' worth of lucha exposure getting me a better appreciation for the style, but I'm really digging it so far in 1994. Art & Eddy are so great at gathering heat - my favorite bit was when Eddy slipped off the top rope setting up TM for a superplex, and getting some razzing from the crowd, then he flipped the crowd off while doing the move. And Lizmark (RIP) looked great in the quick bits he was featured in. Looking forward to digging more into him.

[1994-03-27-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Toshiaki Kawada vs Johnny Ace
...TG replied to Loss's topic in March 1994
Interesting of course, but even this Kawada mark was disappointed. The pillars were so great in 1994 that it didn't matter, but All Japan really needed some gaijin depth at this time. Johnny Ace just doesn't cut it for me (or the crowd).- 7 replies

I like Van Horn's promos, but Bob Caudle's horrified facial reactions to some of his lines are great.

Kinda disappointed in my PWO bros here, downplaying this awesome angle. This is like the most delightful thing I've ever seen: First of all, it's Jerry Lawler v Eddie Gilbert. Not just that, you've got Jerry Lawler putting up his *crown* against Eddie Gilbert's mom's Ford Aerostar van. I'll repeat that: Eddie Gilbert's mom's Ford Aerostar van. Dave has the keys, the title, everything. Jerry wins, of course - so Eddie decides to stop him from driving away by throwing a fire extinguisher through the windshield! This made me as happy as anything I've seen on the 1994 yearbook so far. Eddie & Jerry are so comfortable in their roles, playing this absolutely straight (as they should!) and as believable as a wrestler putting up his mom's van against another wrestler's crown can be.

I figured it was something like that. God, wrestling is so strange - what kind of dumbass working for a massive media conglomerate in the 1990s drops a bunch of racial shit? And what other industry would keep hiring him after this? (OTOH, that was TNA, which kept hiring Vince Russo after its network partner specifically asked them not to.)
-
Jimmy Del Ray's background work in these promos is gold. Him smashing the paper cup in a rage had me rolling.

The double-commentary track was very distracting. I can only imagine how bad it was for Japanese speakers, but for me the worst part was that it drowned out the crowd heat. Heat adds so much to me as a viewer (probably too much) and so took this down more than a bit from the matches in late 93.

Such a strange incongruity between the serious, realistic angle Bret & Owen had and the kitschy, monster-movie host vibe the set and Paul Bearer gives off. Pro wrestling!

[1994-02-27-AJW] Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada vs Aja Kong & Sakie Hasegawa
...TG replied to Loss's topic in February 1994
A common complaint/observation I've noticed among the yearbook threads is the All Japan six-man tags all running together and diminishing returns setting in. I understand, but don't really agree - I'm still as big an AJ mark as ever. But I am definitely hitting that point with All Japan Women tag matches. They're all pretty great - stiff as hell, worked at an incredible pace - but at this point (alas) I'm just kinda at the point where I get it, and looking for something new in the formula.- 9 replies

Cruising around YouTube today at a nearly empty office, found a couple cool resources for Florida footage. This playlist has a bunch of random, scattered stuff - angles, matches, etc. A lot of it came from a user CWF75, who has a huge channel full of stuff from from CWF and a few other places.

Go to one of the indie lucha shows that run here in Dallas.

Goddamn, New Day's tracksuit game is on point tonight. Those are sharp.

Man, "Rosebush" putting Tommy Dreamer's bald spot on blast. Uncool. Funny, but uncool.

Come on. Whatever you think of how he's running the company, Vince is an all-time great character who hasn't been on TV for like a year. The crowd is just supposed to sit there?
-
If they remove the slapping from that segment I think it's fine. Let's see what happens later before we start in with the "Roman is buried" stuff. I'm surprised I liked the Ziggler/Ambrose match, haven't been impressed with either guy lately. And I liked the Owens' beatdown too. Crowd seems nice and hot tonight, let's hope it stays that way.
-
Only was able to watch since the last 5 minutes or so of the ADR/Swagger match. Has the crowd been this dead all night?
-
It's an interesting move by WWE and Mauro. WWE seems to want robots to follow the script and parrot the company line. And if what we've heard about how Vince treats the announcers, does Mauro want to put up with that? Maybe Smackdown is in for some massive reformatting, it's certainly overdue.

[1994-01-04-NJPW-Battlefield] Antonio Inoki vs Genichiro Tenryu
...TG replied to Loss's topic in January 1994
This was really entertaining for what it was. I did have to rewind to make sure Inoki took the pinfall, which was why he kicked out right after three and covered Tenryu, I'm sure. : ) WAR never really had its shit together business-wise, but man, their warm-up jacket game was on point. Those things were sweet.- 15 replies

I know. My point was that they should have been available from day one, or at least Xmas season 2014, not almost two years later.
