[1985-11-29-Houston Wrestling] Jake Roberts vs Lord Humongous (Steel Cage)
JKWebb replied to shoe's topic in November 1985
Man, this was a ton of fun! I'm with you... the crowd was super hot, and I loved the silence of the crowd when LH kicks out of the first DDT. It's the mask, but then we get that killer DDT on the chair and the crowd goes nuts. It's almost like your Hogan vs. the monster type match, but it's Jake the Snake in a cage with blood in Mid-South. I loved it. -
Haha, yes it probably did reach **** before the bell even rang. This was great! It's pretty cool to think about how many wrestlers did have their career match (or pretty close to it) with Flair. It's even cooler to just think about how many of those happened in this month in 1985. I'm thinking about the Koko Ware match, the Ted DiBiase angle/match, and this one. That's three guys with three of their best moments of their entire career, but only one month for the Nature Boy. Woooo! (plus you have the really good stuff with Butch Reed - even if it's not his career match)

Mid-South has one of my favorite angles of all time on 11/06/1985 (Flair/DiBiase), and on 11/11/985 one of my favorite matches ever between Duggan and Sawyer. They tear each other apart. I was lucky enough to meet Duggan WresteMania 32 weekend in Dallas, and this match is what I asked him about. He jokingly stated that this match was more of a shoot than a match, and he joked about how he was still feeling aftermath from the match. He really lit up talking about it, and when on to talk about working with Sawyer and Mid-South for about 10 minutes (when he really didn't have to). He seemed like really nice guy. He also seemed to have a genuine love for this match. Anyways, it doesn't get more brutal than this. What a war! I love all of the parts and comments mentioned above. Yeah, *****.

[1985-11-16-Mid South-TV] Ric Flair vs Ted DiBiase
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in November 1985
It's one of my favorite angles of all-time as well. ***** I really can't word it any better. I'm sure most of the folks around PWO have seen this. But yes, if you haven't, it should be next on your list. It doesn't get any more wrestling than this.- 4 replies

[1985-10-14-Mid South-New Orleans, LA] Dick Murdoch vs Butch Reed
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in October 1985
The first half of this match is made by Murdoch's selling, and the second half by the selling from Reed. Reed's performance in the second half of this match is as good as it gets. I'm with you on the rating ****3/4. It's hard to choose a favorite between this and 9/22, but I think as a personal favorite I still would go with the first one. Every blow in that match is so devastating, and they both feed off each other selling the fatigue and crushing blows at every turn. I also love how chaotic the finish becomes in that match. However, as far as war of attrition (as Sleeze put it), or limb selling, this match is top tier. I feel like these two matches are so unique. I think it probably has a lot to do with the uniqueness of Murdoch, but I just haven't seen many matches quite like theirs. They really mesh well with each other. -
You guys have me pretty hyped for the rematch, because I'm with you both on this one! The great thing about that Reed "long" side headlock is that it looks like he is going to break Murdoch's neck! It really looks like he is crushing him. I had to check to see where Murdoch's face was, because it looked like it would be really hard for him to breathe. This match is vicious. Every blow, every submission... It's super intense. Loved it. ****3/4

I thought it was funny on commentary when they mentioned that it's okay for men to have long blonde hair at this point. I loved this match so much. As mentioned, I really love the expressions on Flair's face when he gets a chop or gets surprised by Wahoo. It's awesome to see Flair having these amazing matches with Terry Taylor built around the wrestling itself, and then he comes in and has this awesome brawl with Wahoo. Wahoo's chops and strikes look devastating! I want to sign up for NWA Classics after I finish this set. There are so many things I want to see, like their match two weeks or so before this one.

That Jake in the ropes spot was incredible! I hope someone steals that.

[1985-05-11-Mid South-Claremore, OK] Rock & Roll Express vs Dirty White Boys
JKWebb replied to stomperspc's topic in May 1985
I totally agree with stomperspc. If someone asked you to show them the Rock n' Roll Express for the first time, this would be a great intro match. It's incredibly fun. The crowd is super hot, and it never dies down. All the spots are smart, fun, and it's all so entertaining. This is a really fun match for sure. ***1/2- 2 replies

Every single time they announced the time in this match, it blew my mind. At 10 minutes, I thought I had watched 4 minutes. At 25 minutes, I was thinking around 15 or maybe a little over. I agree with the reviews, excellent match! I was surprised to see that some rank 4/28/1985 match higher than this one, because I think this one far exceeded it. I think it's around the high end of ****1/2 for me.

[1985-04-28-Mid South-Tulsa, OK] Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in April 1985
I agree with Sleeze in that I liked this match better than the Terry Taylor match that preceded it. That match was ranked #25 in the DVDR results, and this one was ranked #48. I'd at least switch them. Great match! -

I thought the dates were interesting too. I just finished the Terry Taylor match, and I was moving on to this match. I noticed they were listed as the same date. Didn't Terry Taylor act like their first match was in June in New Orleans on the Mid-South (WWE) set? Maybe I'm remembering that wrong. Obviously, that is incorrect either way. I'm guessing this is the 04/27/1985 match against KVE. I'm looking forward to watching it right now... hitting play... anyway... where did you get those dates from you listed Paul? -
Believe the hype indeed. I'm watching a ton of mid-south right now, but I've seen this many times at this point. It's one of my favorite matches of all-time, and I agree it's one of the best matches from the 80's without question. The layout of this match is so perfect. They really build the anticipation well. I love towards the end when Duggan finally has the glove, Ted hits him with the powder. You can hear the crowd start to groan and moan... they know what's coming... they've seen this before... a heel cheats to win... but, nope... We get my personal favorite punch ever delivered in a match as the finish, and the crowd goes nuts for Duggan! I also recommend watching the build to the match prior to watching it. *****

I could feel every emotion and every ounce of pain Jim Duggan was going through. What an incredible performance from him. I also loved the way DiBiase started the match with the confirmation and follow-up powder to the eyes. These guys had one hell of a brawl here. I truly loved it. I was absolutely glued to every moment. Around ****1/2 for me.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it! In my head, I had always just thought it was one of the better years. Looking forward to really diving in.

Ricky Morton was so good when this started (well, throughout). He's bumping for Ladd, then he catches Ladd with a few arm drags, and they both look to the crowd for their reactions. It's great. When Duggan gets tagged in, that lariat he hits Eaton with is off the charts. The crowd eats up the huge and dramatic Duggan offense. I love the mid-south crowds. I think my favorite spot is when the ref has his back turned and the heels triple team on Ricky Morton. Condrey really kicks the crap out of him, and it gets so much heat. Great match. (loving the numbers shoe, thanks)

[1984-07-01-Mid South-Tulsa, OK] Magnum T.A. vs Ted DiBiase
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in July 1984
I've been a HUGE fan of the OKC match since I first saw it a few years ago. I actually have that one at ****3/4 and think it's probably my favorite under 10 minute match ever (off the top of my head). I've been really excited to check this match out for a long time. I have never been able to find this one online, but I now have it on DVD. It's actually hard for me to pick a favorite between the two, and it's pretty amazing they had these matches on the same day. The way DiBiase works the sleeper so violently is awesome. I'm glad Jim Ross didn't interfere with this one, so you do get the crowd noise throughout. The crowd is on fire. I give them both ****3/4. For me, it just can't get much more entertained than the two matches these guys had on the same day on 05/27/1984. Like Sleeze said, the cool thing is they are actually different. You have the sprint vs. the drama. Both of them are bloody and intense. Both of them are classics. I'm glad I finally saw this.- 3 replies

[1984-04-22-Mid South] Midnight Express vs Bill Watts & Stagger Lee
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in April 1984
The crowd is molten for this! Bobby Eaton's bumps are awesome, and Watts is throwing killer punches and selling the fist. I love Eaton's dazed walking around selling. Also, his bump(s) from the apron to the floor are great. I thought Watts did an excellent job building the drama for the match as the FIP too. Classic match and moment. Oh, and man that eruption from the crowd at the end! ****1/2 -
Right off the bat, Magnum throws this high and quick dropkick to Jim Neidhard and I'm hyped. His offense is always so explosive. I really enjoyed Reed in this, and thought the cage spots with magnum were really good. I LOVED the mask under the mask spot. So good. ****

Oh yeah, this brawl is awesome! I guess the earliest of what is one of the most famous rivalries from the territory. It does not disappoint. I thought Duggan was fantastic in this. I love his long extended round house punches. They just look devastating. Of course, DiBiase does a great job selling and bumping for him too. Thanks for the storyline surrounding the match Sleeze, it helped with the drama. I'll be watching those promos soon if they are on the set. ****1/4

That looks really cool, thanks! I'll be checking those out for sure. I was talking about the chronological one above, but now I just noticed all kinds of goodies on here...
-
I really enjoyed Bockwinkel bumping for Dusty. There was a great spot where he was going for a bear hug, or something like that, and Dusty slipped out. Bock sells his momentum wonderfully and just smacks the mat face first. He was super entertaining for me in this, and I think I'm probably a little higher than some on this match. I guess it could have had more drama, but I do think this was really good and especially entertaining. I loved the finish with Ted leaving Dusty bloody. If I were to use stars, maybe more like ***1/2 or so for me.
-
That bombs away looked BRUTAL. DiBiase was greedy and wanted the pin for himself. I thought that was a good way of showing his character. Great match, moment, and following the match promos. You can hear DiBiase's evil laugh at the end. Great match - enjoyed the teamwork of Borne and Ted ****

[1983-06-24-Houston Wrestling] Chavo Guerrero vs Mr Olympia
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in June 1983
Chavo getting his foot on the rope after taking the loaded boot got me! I was expecting that to be it, but not for Chavo. As was said, Chavo shows great fire in this match and I loved the performance from Olympia as well. Chavo going for the mask was great, and the final moments of Dibiase and company hitting the ring were really intense. The heat was very audible. This is an excellent match! If I were to put stars on it, I'd agree with Sleeze.- 2 replies
