  1. Rick Martel has been ruling as IC champ and now he can boast of winning the "War of the Worlds" tournament. I remember you telling me that you wanted to do a battlebowl style match. Great idea giving it the King of the Ring label. SummerSlam is gonna set the Great White North on fire!
  2. Great American Bash updates 1. It's announced that before the ppv proper, there will be an hour long pre-show airing live on the USA Network. The show will feature predictions for the main card as well as exclusive matches. 2. One such match announced will be the "Land of Opportunity" battle royal. The winner will challenge Robert Fuller for the NWA United States Championship on the main card. 3. As the Bash draws ever closer everyone is scrambling to secure their place on the big show. This week saw two top teams face off for the right to challenge the Road Warriors for the NWA World Tag Team championships. With a timely distraction from their manager Baby Doll and some covert interference from Big John Studd Badd Company were able to beat out Buffalo Soldiers to earn their biggest opportunity in the NWA yet.
  3. Oakland. If Busick wasn't scary enough, now he knows the heart punch! The Minister is cooking up something Sinister. Douglas tries to reach out to the Bully but gets shut down. The Dreamboats win the battle but the war isn't over. Awesome claims another victim. Hart scores a w in the war with DDP's crew. San Francisco. Regal wins the Battle of the Brits. Scotty & Bigelow both impress. Getting backup is already paying off for Windham. Rose can always trust on his minions. The Can-Ams end the game of title trade. Fresno. The Blondes luck against the Irish continue. Severn v Tenryu is getting intense. Also Blood Pollution is a badass name. Jackal pounces on a downed Demon. Atlas wins a hossfest, The DC get burned. This week sees Dean defend against Eddie but the result is the same.
  4. I'm liking the idea that for once The Olympians are actually right for once when calling their opponents cheaters. But at least Sweet Dreams are honest cheaters. Also tickled by Sawyer starting the brawl with Colon by beating up Colon's opponent. Taylor is less than impressed by the Crippler. Grizz has a tall test ahead of him. Graham is assembling his All-Star team. Gagne is back and has finally decided to outsource his feud with Canek. Akbar brings in Black Blood who is off to a strong start. Akbar doesn't get much rest as he & Cameron square up to Orndorff. Roberts is exactly the type to wage war for fun and profit. Los Guerreros take the cowards way out. Hogan & Jumbo finally meet face to face.
  5. Speaking as someone who did watch the Broken saga unfold in real time, yes it did.
  6. The Horsemen United(?) The group sent in a VTR from a high class resort where the celebration of Buddy Landel's victory in the Battlebowl, and guaranteed shot at the NWA World Heavyweight Title, was in full swing. A highly elated (and perhaps slightly inebriated) JJ Dillon crowed that it "was always the plan" to have the "Nature Boy" claim the title shot. Sharp eyed viewers would have noticed that this comment drew side eye from Harley Race though nothing came from it. Junior Heavyweight Division. NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Silver King made his in ring debut and easily dispatched his frankly overwhelmed opponent with the "Silver Driver" (Death Valley Driver). Brian Christopher made his way down while SK was celebrating and jaw jacked at him from the floor. SK welcomed Christopher into the ring even going so far as to hold the ropes open for him but the self proclaimed "wrestling royalty" declined. Also of note in the division this week was the developing issue between Too Cold Scorpio and Lanny Poffo. After their dual elimination from Battlebowl an argument broke out between the two and a match was signed to settle their issue. They had a exciting encounter that had the fans attention for the entirety of its 10 minute time limit. After the time limit expired Scorpio tried to be a sportsman and offered a handshake only for a disgruntled Poffo to walk away. NWA Heritage Title. A six man tag between Jimmy Valiant, Shaska Whatley & Tommy Rich and the Paul Jones Army's Super Destroyer, King Kong Bundy & Ivan Koloff had a potentially game changing finish as Tommy Rich scored the pin on Super D. As Jones lead his men away, Rich was seen pointing at the Heritage champion and making the "belt around the waist" gesture.
  7. The Sherri connection pays off as Paul E scores the Midnights. Tunney walks a fine line in regards to the recent title changes. They both stand but the former champs get their deserved rematches. Creative angle to explain Roberts departure. Looking forward to the debut of Raw!
  8. Portland. Busick makes a strong return. Bret almost bit off more than he could chew with the Exchange. The dust is lethal! The Brigade seems to split over trusting Windham. Pillman is climbing back towards a title shot. The Blood Syndicate may have been focused on singles gold lately but they're still a tough team. Portland night 2. Awesome was too tough for the young Texan. The Phoenix burn the Superstars. Lynn gets mauled by the Jackal. Scotty slays the Dragon. The tug of war over the Pacific tag titles continues with the Express regaining the advantage. Busy night for Scotty as he saves the TV Title for his boss. At less than 100% the Dragon still has the Pacific title firmly in his claws. Eugene. The Blondes bomb the Irish. Condrey takes the coward's way out. The Southern Boys are starting to pull it together. Regal is out for payback. Gordy vs Hashimoto would sell out just about any venue in Japan. Malenko & Eddie put on a real classic in the main event.
  9. Burke starts to get tuned up to face St Clair. Vinney brings victory home once again. Bullet Bob and the Iceman would be a formidable team on their own but through Graham into the mix? The All-Stars may have made a serious mistake. Hansen is truly King of the Cowboys. Devastation Inc lays out The Mighty Yankee. If Miller has a problem with pretty boys then he's definitely gonna have issues with Perez. Morrow drops one bombshell after another. Larry Z wastes no time taking things to the next level with David. I know Kirchner said he made a deal with the Devil but I wasn't expecting Jake Roberts!
  10. No skin off my nose.
  11. Shamrock & Malenko sticking together pays off. Bad News ends his time in the UWF on a high note. Maeda doesn't look happy at having to do business.
  12. Battlebowl June 1, 1989 K Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Airing live on the USA Network. "Lethal Lottery" tag matches. Brian Christopher & Jamie Dundee defeat Fatu & Firebreaker Chip when Dundee pinned Fatu with a sunset flip. "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel & Big John Studd w/JJ Dillon & "The Perfect 10" Baby Doll defeat Billy Joe Travis & "British Magician" Steve Wright when Studd made Travis submit to a Bearhug. Too Cold Scorpio & "Leaping" Lanny Poffo defeat Abdullah the Butcher & Super Strong Machine when the latter pair immediately started fighting each other and never made it into the ring. "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant & Junkyard Dog defeat "California Stud" Rod Price & "Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff w/"The Mastermind" Ron Fuller & "Number One" Paul Jones when JYD pinned Price with the "Thump" while Valiant and Koloff brawled around ringside. "The Golden Warrior Kevin Von Erich & Blade defeat John Kronus & "Exotic Adrian Street w/"Number One Paul Jones & Ms Linda when Kronus passed out to the Von Erich claw. Hiroshi Hase & "Handsome" Harley Race w/JJ Dillon defeat "Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan & "The Unpredictable" Dick Slater w/The Assassin when Hase pinned Sullivan with a crucifix. Battlebowl order of entry. 1. Lanny Poffo. 2. Jamie Dundee. 3. Hiroshi Hase. 4. Kevin Von Erich. 5. Blade. 6. Too Cold Scorpio 7. Buddy Landel 8. Jimmy Valiant. 9. Brian Christopher. 10. Big John Studd. 11. Harley Race. 12. Junkyard Dog Notable moments. Blade enters and immediately charges Hase who instinctively backdrops him over the top rope for the elimination. Scorpio and Poffo are jockeying for position near the ropes ending with Scorpio performing a suplex against the ropes that causes both men to fall out of the ring. A shoving match breaks out with security having to separate the two. Big John Studd going on a rampage and tossing out five men in a row. The final three are Landel, Race and JYD. The Horsemen double team for several minutes until a miscommunication sees Landel accidentally clothesline Race over the top rope. We're down to two. JYD & Budro brawl for a bit until the Dog whips Landel into the ropes for the "Thump" but Dillon thinks quickly and grabs his own man's leg. Dog rushes in but gets caught with a elbow to the face causing him to stagger back. Landel floors him with a disqus elbow then lands the Corkscrew elbow for the three count. Winner of the 1989 Battlebowl: "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel!
  13. Slick being upset about Paul E calling his team the Skyscrapers while he's managing the Twin Towers is just so delightfully petty. Nobody is as All American as the Rougeaus! Dusty is going snake hunting. Tunney is coming to sort things out.
  14. Giant Gonzalez is making quite the impression. Paul E officially introduces the Skyscrapers. Rick Rude is WWF champion! Holy shit.
  15. Vancouver. Chono's Black Charisma isn't enough to deter Bam Bam. Pillman takes the fight to Scotty. The Hitman has snapped. The Terror Collective claims their first victim. The Can-Am's reign ends as soon as it begins. The Sinister Minister is a perfect fit for the Wild Things. Kelowna. The Blondes come out on top in a rematch with the Irish. Condrey & Payne both impress. Hall & Awesome would be a serious clash of the titans. Austin once again cheats Regal. 0-3 for the Wild Things this weekend.
  16. The Wings of Fire take off on the second attempt. I think there was a bit of a echo during the beginning of Cornette's promo. Still, Big Bully Busick is a great get if you're looking for some muscle. Atlas puts down a game Blackman. In one fell swoop Dibiase ends the OWC and forges the Terror Collective. The Southern Boys reign themselves in enough to actually win a match. Bret almost falls into a Diamond Exchange trap but fortunately Bam Bam was there to make the heels think better of it.
  17. Lightning Lou strikes! Sawyer is eager for some more fun with Colon. Col Kirchner is revealed to be the leader in the war on Nikita. Karachi Vice is back! Brandi gets to show off. England's new knight is Simply the Best. Vinnie & Royal don't want none of Big Jim. Oliver is back and ready for anything. The All Stars beat down Billy Graham! Kaz with a nice flex. Morrow signing some major acts. Sweet Dreams earns a title shot and some fans. Stevens has had enough of hearing Hogan's name everywhere he and Jumbo go and he's willing to offer a title shot so everyone knows who the man is in the AWA.
  18. The Hart Foundation has been shaken! Funk intervenes to keep the title on Savage. Something big is coming. Muta escapes with the title but Duggan isn't done yet. Paul E keeps things going by bringing in a towering partner for Spivey. Heenan has found a new pair of savages. Andre puts down Kamala but Fuji came prepared by bringing Giant Gonzalez.
  19. Battlebowl. We're one week away from the big event and everyone is hyping for all their worth. From veterans like Wahoo to young up-and-comers like Too Cold Scorpio to beasts like King Kong Bundy and crafty heels like Buddy Landel, they've all got one thing in common. Their all convinced they're the one walking out of Knoxville with a guaranteed shot at the Ten Pounds of Gold. The Dark Crusade. Sullivan and his madmen are seemingly determined to make life hell for the Japanese trio. They kept at it this week when after a showcase win, Super Strong Machine was attacked by Abdullah the Butcher with his infamous fork. SSM refused to give an inch and a few security guards were ko'd before the ensuing brawl was broken up. Junior Heavyweight division. Brian Christopher made his in ring debut and carried himself well before finishing his opponent with a full nelson facebuster called the "Chris-cross" before reiterating his demand for a shot at Silver King. He seems to have competition though as not only were Too Cold Scorpio and Lanny Poffo victorious in their individual outings, they both made reference to the newly reintroduced title.
  20. Night 2 baby! The Dreamboats may have just earned a title shot. Regal puts up a hell of a fight and is ready to keep going. The Blondes & the Irish have another meeting in their future. Condrey makes it a perfect pair of nights for Camp Cornette. Pillman refuses to back down to Awesome. Hall has to have a title shot coming soon. The Triangle seems to have something in mind for Albright & Young. Rose is still the sneakiest s.o.b in PCW. Austing is going all in on the dark side by costing Hart against the Diamond Exchange. A one armed Haynes is no match for the Iceman. The Can Am Express have finally made it to the top. Steamboat withstands Tenryu who's surprisingly gracious in defeat.
  21. The MVC take their first step to tag team dominance. Douglas and Cactus prove a formidable pairing. Scotty is seriously climbing the ranks. Hashimoto aids Bam Bam in some well earned payback. Severn with the ol' rope a dope. The Southern Boys are gunning for gold. An errant kick costs Blackman. Eddie keeps the Dragon from his treasure. Dibiase's Triangle helps him to victory. Night 1 ends with the Midnight's are champions on both ends of the country. Bring on night 2.
  22. The Saints almost catch the Olympians sleeping. Adias slips past another challenger. Well we didn't have an International champion coming into the event.....and we still don't. After a relatively quick loss, Dundee decides Idol had a point and turns on the Bullet! Chicky's arrival really caught me off guard. Hogan slays Akbar's beast. Jumbo retains in the homeland.
  23. Lots of compelling stories heading into the Clash.
  24. Miller declares war on the pretty boys. Vin Man angles to get his team on the big show. Doll is pulling out all the dirty tricks against Huber. Colon calls out Sawyer one more time. Grizz with the literal squash. Hansen continues to prove he's the AWA's #1 cowboy. The Red Rooster is coming to strut his stuff. Larry Z wastes no time welcoming "Bruno's boy" to the AWA. Burke with a nice little showcase. Nikita with an emphatic win in the Boot Camp match.
