Bumping this after two plus years, because I've been watching a fair amount of AWA lately and wonder what others would have to say about this potential myth. The failure of the AWA was ultimately due to Verne being too stuck in the past and unwilling to change with the times. I can understand that as far as Verne not being willing or able to expand nationally like Vince and Crockett were doing in the '80's. He seemed to be comfortable in his midwest-west coast region, with occasional trips to Jersey. But, when it came to things like angles and gimmicks and such, at least from the mid '80's period I've been watching, they seem relatively up to speed.

I think for a brief time it seemed like Vince thought there could be some business there, but once it was clear there wasn't it was the start of the now hallowed tradition of Vince getting off on humiliating JR. I would guess that Vince hoped that a "shoot" angle, like JR lashing out for Vince firing him twice, would spark interest.

Hindsight being 20/20 and all, it was better than that they held off as long as they did. Not only do they have a much bigger library to work with now, but the name change in 2002 would have wrecked havoc with their programming, between muting all mentions of "WWF" and having to blur out scratch logos and everything.

My friends and I all laughed a bit when Bubba put Mae through the table, and she took more of a bump from it (and it's clear that Bubba is protecting her on the way down) than Terri Runnels had the week before.

I think my issue with Inoki is similar to Loss with PWFG and RINGS. I just can't get into it for the life of me. A few years back a dude made an Inoki/Baba comparison comp. It featured matches of both Inoki and Baba aginst Jack Brisco, The Destroyer, Billy Robinson, and maybe someone else I'm forgetting. The Baba matches blew me away, while Inoki just bored me to tears, they all came off like they were just laying on the mat to kill time. I dunno if everyone was supposed to think that Inoki was being "legit" and be excited by that prospect or what the case was.

I fucking LOVED when the Horsemen all beat the snot out the Booty Man on a Nitro shortly before Hog Wild. It was the week after the nWo had beaten up a bunch of WCW guys, including Arn, so they took their revenge on Hogan's best friend. I also found Flair's heel turn in '99 after winning the title to be pretty "evil" of him, because everyone was DYING to cheer and love him.

We've talked about Hogan's antics during the '89 and '92 Rumble matches, don't forget the 1990 one either. Where he thanks Warrior for saving him by eliminating him in a way that appears to be accidental, with Hogan trying to "save" Warrior by going after Rude and Barbarian while they had Warrior on the ropes. And the moron actually bought it, he ran back in and went after Rude and Barbarian.

I dunno about that one, John. Eric was never one to learn from past mistakes, his or others.

Don't forget that when Hogan and Orndorf were going to the ring to face Stud and Bundy, Hogan practically shoved Paul out of the way to play to the crowd. It was like one bridgemaid shoving another so she could catch the boquet. I always found Hogan's promo at Summerslam '90 to be odd. Quake and Bravo injured Tugboat who was supposed to be in Hogan's corner. Hogan cuts this promo borderline bragging that he's not going out there alone, because the great and powerful Hulk Hogan needs someone to watch his back for him. And there's another case of Hogan being a jerk. Quake and Bravo injure his friend Tugboat and Hogan is nowhere to be seen. Which goes to show how much Hogan had his back. So when it's time for Hogan to wrestle Quake, he just up and replaces Tugboat with Bossman. It's no wonder Tugboat didn't become Typhoon by beating Hogan's ass. He deserved it for that one.

Vince McMahon and Jim Ross indirectly con Eric Bischoff into giving Hall and Nash $400,000 raises. A nice little nugget from Kevin Nash on the nWo Episode of the Legends Roundtable. When JR announced on RAW and "Diesel" and "Razor" would be back next week, Bischoff freaked out because Hall and Nash weren't under official contract at the time. So Eric offers them an extra $400 grand each to sign a contract. Then kicked himself in the ass (with Hall and Nash standing behind him laughing) when they all watched RAW the next week and saw who exactly Ross brought out.

I would assume that they're trying to put over the wrestler being so damn tough that he's on his feet after taking such a bit beating.

Jarrett was a couple of months away from the U.S. Title, and McMichael was winning it from Jarrett at the final Clash. So yeah, you could argue that Chris was actually the bottom ranked member of Team Piper.

Well he was part of the "greateast TNA match of all time" the 3 way with Styles and Joe from Unbreakable. It is a good match, but I personally thought the two Joe/Styles singles matches from Sacrifice and Turning Point were better.

I discovered SKeith accidentally, when I came across his archive of Coliseum Video rants when doing a google search for something else CV related. It was his second book that turned me off on his writing, it was just so lazily thrown together and full of errors. Including saying that Austin was supposed to win Final Four, and the book came out a good eight months or so after Dave debunked it and his excuse was that he thought he'd read it in the Observer. All these years later nothing has changed. Bix's synopsis of Dungeon of Death shows that. Not to mention his recent blog claims of Magnum's car crash being due to him being drunk, and the recent PWI on JCP's payroll claim. And even if Apter hadn't debunked it, I'd be skeptical about it. You'd think the mags would be a lot more pro NWA and anti all other feds. Not to mention that Bill hosted a video that included clips from Memphis and WCCW, and PWI sponsored a UWF Tournament at one point.

I highly doubt it. Ring of Hell says the same thing, so it's not something that SKeith came up with. But, Dave has debunked some of the stories in Ring of Hell before. The reason I doubt that it's the case is because Uncensored ended with Luger's big comeback to eliminate Savage, Hall, and Nash and then nearly Hogan before Rodman interfered to give the nWo the win. THAT was followed by Sting's appearance and laying out the nWo.

February for Inoki and October for Baba. Chosyu's jump to All Japan in '85 and Maeda and UWF's NJPW invasion in '86 spring to mind as well as they both changed the style of matches in Japan. Chosyu forced them to quicken the pace, while Maeda forced them to work a more realistic looking style. The '81 Tag League final night, with Hansen's surprise jump. After watching some 2003 ROH, I don't think anyone is more annoying than Sapolsky as "Chris Lovey." He just recycles the same thoughts show after show, almost word for word.
