  1. Typical Memphis blowjob video, made famous with the Fabs about a decade prior.
  2. Have you seen that phone? He probably wouldn't get more than two bars if he was a block away from the cell phone tower. Good promos, and a smart way to work around Lawler not being there, I thought.
  3. Jerry Lawler once again outsmarts Dave Brown. That tape is probably footage of Lawler beating up JYD so bad, he's doing a service to the kids at home by not airing it on local tv, right?
  4. This kind of seems vaguely racist, but I might be a bit oversensitive. At any rate, it's kind of hard to sympathize with a belt thief who may or may not be pure evil, even if DiBiase isn't exactly a bastion of good will.
  5. When I was doing UWC tv, we had a yearly event called the Browns Mills Rumble, and I used to emulate these updte segments to try to sell the show to the dozen or so folks who watched us on YouTube. Good stuff here.
  6. Nice tease towards Wrestlemania VI in there. Typical coked out Hulk Hogan promo, which I grew up with and loved as a lad, so I enjoyed this.
  7. I would say, purely as a match, I preferred the 1/14 tag to this match, as I feel like Misawa and Fuyuki were better in that match than Takagi and Kawada were here. But this had the better Tsuruta/Tenryu interactions for sure, and I loved the out of control brawling in the end with Tenryu seemingly taking on the entire AJPW roster at ringside. I pretty much have loved all the Tsuruta/Tenryu interactions in both matches, as they are excellent in how much they hate each other, and Tenryu holding contempt for seemingly everybody in the world has been a highlight thus far.
  8. I was disappointed by this. When I saw the angle at the end of the Muta/Arn tv tile change, I was excited for this match and was hoping it would be on the yearbook. It's here, and its not bad, but not as good as I was hoping it would be, which granted might be me setting my own expectations too high. Good post match angle to set up the Clash cage match, though like I said at the end of Muta/Arn, this feels like a program that is well past it's expiration date at this point.
  9. Yeah, Cactus will come a long way from this promo for sure. Within five years, he will be one of the best stickmen in the business, but he's far from that point here. He seems to be going for weird and goofy rather than threatening, and I think when he realizes that being dangerous is better for his career than being strange, things will fall into place for him. Per his book, that happens after he leaves the NWA later in the year, so the timeline fits what Loss says about him getting better between NWA/WCW stints.
  10. Travis' "one short leg/one long leg" flower print tights are *****. Match is good, building to a hot tag that never comes as instead, we get an Adams/Embry split that allows the heels destroy poor Bill Dundee. Good stuff, Gary Young and Billy Travis have been in some of my favorite segments on the yearbook so far.
  11. I was bored with most of this, though they built well towards what I assume was an upset finish. I enjoyed the previous match a lot more. A large part of this was worked like a boring UFC fight, about 20 years before anybody knew what a boring UFC fight was.
  12. As far as "styles I'm not used to watching" go, I enjoyed this more than the joshi tag. Some of the submissions looked nasty. Worked evenly until Yamazaki took over at the end and choked Anjoh out. Didn't think I'd care much for UWF style but I liked this and will keep an open mind towards the other UWF matches on this set as a result.
  13. Fantastic match. Didn't love the finish but as a means of setting up a rematch (did that ever happen? I think the POP were split not long after this) it was fine. The Powers of Pain come away looking like bad asses but the Rockers come away looking strong too. You know Marty and Warlord were thinking of this match when they went for that ridiculously high backdrop at the Survivor Series, since Marty gets some impressive air on this one too.
  14. Good on you, WWF Universe circa 1990.
  15. I loved this match. Tenryu is such an awesome asshole here, and the long heat segment on Tiger Mask is done extremely well. I loved how they largely kept Tsuruta and Tenryu away from each other and made their interactions in this match mean something. After largely feuding for much of the past year, they probably didn't need to do much against each other anyway. The finish is great, with Tenryu first damn near lariating Misawa out of his boots, then nailing Tsuruta as well, but that causes him to yank on the half crab even more for the submission. Very, very clever.
  16. You can tell Sullivan really likes Cactus by the way he puts him over on commentary, and you can tell Ross likes Lee Scott for the same reason. Whatever happened to Lee Scott anyway? I expected to see him show up on some SMW TV tapings as a jobber at some point, but if he never wound up there, his career must not have lasted long past 1990. Anyway, fun to get a glimpse of the early Cactus, who looks downright skinny compared to how he'd look in upcoming years. And it honestly would not surprise me to find out that Cactus and Sullivan really were discussing Piscasso backstage before the matches started.
  17. Fun segment where Flair, Woman, and Cornette all get a moment to shine.
  18. I'm glad there will be more of these segments, as I could watch Lawler walk around a wrestling studio insulting people dozens and dozens of times and not get sick of it.
  19. Chris Champion's hair. Nothing I say can possibly do this justice. Then again, Steve Austin is wearing cougar-print tights. King Cobra offers him $1,000 for his spot in the six man tag, which Austin immediately accepts because that's like 6 weeks of Memphis payoffs. Good segment.
  20. Poor Lawler, about to get heartbroken by the Browns for the last time, as they won't be good enough to break his heart for the next 22 years. The phone conversation stuff gets annoying after a while, but that's the point of it so good on him. Love seeing my favorite SMW wrestler of all time, the Dirty White Boy, and interested in seeing his Memphis stuff this year.
  21. Between Bill Dundee and his leather jacket, dyed black mullet, and cowprint pants, and Billy Joe Travis and his yellow jumpsuit and blondafroperm, some great early 90's fashion on display here. Great promo by Dundee and the Travis video was really, really good, as Travis is a pretty great heel. Pretty obvious that Jeff Jarrett stole a lot of his heel characteristics from Travis, to the point where he should still be paying royalties to the Travis estate.
  22. Really fun match with a hot finishing sequence. Have to say, it feels like Horsemen vs J-Tex is a bit long in the tooth at this point - Flair retired Funk two months prior, Gary Hart isn't around anymore, Muta put everybody over at the Ironman at Starrcade, and now he's dropping the TV belt. How did anybody think they would get anybody to care about a six man cage match the next month, I do not know, as the heels don't seem to have much credibility at this point.
  23. Kevin Sullivan's long bleached blond skullet/suit combination is amazing. Loved the references to Dory Funk Jr possibly being developmentally disabled, which is a pretty good rib. Good segment, looking forward to more Funk's Grills.
  24. This was a fantastic match. Have to say, it's a little disorienting at first listening to Lance Russell on commentary, but he adds a lot to this match. Flair opens with a long headlock on Eaton, with Lance pointing out that while it won't get a submission, it could do some damage to Eaton's equilibrium (basically, the opposite of Gorilla Monsoon's "why is he wasting time on that, he'll never get a submission with that move" commentary). Almost on cue, Eaton whips Flair out of the headlock, gets hit with a shoulderblock, and stumbles to the floor, proving Lance's point correct on commentary even if he likely didn't even hear it. Loved that. Flair also does a great job taking the heat in this one. It's really too bad Flair always preferred being a heel and tried not to stay babyface for too long, because he's really good at garnering sympathy. The arena sounds like it's shaking when Eaton has those figure four headscissors on, trying to rally Flair. When he finally makes his comeback, the crowd is totally with him. Eaton also takes some nutso bumps on the floor near the finish, including a high backdrop on the concrete. Great finishing stretch too, even if Stan Lane coming down seems a bit like overkill. So far, this is my favorite match of the set. They really don't make TV matches like this anymore.
  25. 37%, down from 46% after he retired last year. Despite Dave continuing to try to push him in the WON, I don't think he's going to get in. Dave also weirdly tried to make a case that Sting was a better candidate than the Rock 'n' Roll Express.
