Man, Norman looks even more gigantic wrestling Sullivan. Good to see him get a measure of revenge after what Sullivan did to the poor guy's painting. The finish was amusing, like something out of an 80's comedy movie. Norman takes a nice bump on the ramp too.

[1990-02-06-NWA-Clash of the Champions X] "Cactus Jack is dead!"
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
He kind of had to get up since he was about to get counted out. My guess is, he could justify it saying he was going to be back in WCW the next week and Mascaras wasn't, so he had to get himself over in losing somehow. Anyway, Cactus' bump remains crazy, and Jim Cornette called this perfectly. And Missy's promo...was that really the best take they got out of her? They hadn't quite beaten the southern accent out of her by this point either, but damn if she doesn't look good. -
[1990-02-06-NWA-Clash of the Champions X] Wrestle War '90: Wild Thing, The Rap
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Awww I was looking forward to the remix. -
Why is Sting dressed as a pirate? We're a solid three and a half years before Jerry Seinfeld brings back pirate fashion. This is a good angle, but man does it come out of nowhere. I kind of feel like Ole hogs up all the mic time and doesn't let Flair get his points across, which is a shame because Ole is kind of rambling and repeating himself a lot by the end. Good promo, good angle, but not the right thing at this time. Ole and Arn should have been heels for sure, but turning Flair was a mistake.

[1990-02-06-NWA-Clash of the Champions X] Steve Williams entrance
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Fun video. The name Doctor Death seems appropriate, as if he's the only thing keeping that bemulleted man in the ambulance alive, he surely died shortly thereafter.- 15 replies

Fun videos. One thing Memphis and Dallas were both known for is producing good music videos, and these are no exception. It seemed like the Jarrett video repeated a bunch of clips, though, in addition to being about a year old.

[1990-02-03-USWA-Championship Sports] Kerry Von Erich and The Soul Taker
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Kerry Von Erich has enough charm to get by on the fact that his promos are not very good. This promo is proof of that, as even Percy Pringle doesn't seem to mind that he's called the wrong name twice.- 11 replies

[1990-02-03-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Jerry Lawler
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
The thing is, if you didn't know the circumstances behind this promo and how it was Lawler and Travis who were always laying out the babyfaces with other heels on their side, you'd think this is a babyface promo with Lawler challenging the two cowardly heels to face him and Travis without any help. But since it's Lawler, it's all mostly bullshit, yet done in a compelling enough manner to where you still want to see the match. Good stuff.- 11 replies

[1990-02-03-USWA-Championship Sports] Steve Austin vs Chris Adams feud recap
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
It doesn't take long for Austin to find his voice on promos as a heel. Nice to see the genesis of a long feud here on the yearbook.- 12 replies

[1990-02-03-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Four Horsemen
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
I'd almost call this Flair promo more foreshadowing of the heel turn, since he's not in his babyface respectful Flair style, but half-crazed heel Flair mode. Good promo to hype the Clash. -
Tex and Shanghai's theme music! TBS Voiceover Guy! Awful Scott Steiner promo! Good stuff.

[1990-02-03-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Woman Wants Flair
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
What kind of accent does Nancy have here anyway? I find it jarring to hear her talk for some reason. Good segment, but not sure what the payoff is supposed to be. -
[1990-02-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler, Kerry Von Erich and Jeff Jarrett
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Nice hype for the Monday night card at the Mid South Coliseum. When they cut away from the ringside promo with Jarrett and Von Erich, I thought they were sparing us Von Erich talking, but instead they have backstage clips and in a minor upset, he cuts a much better promo than Jarrett. Lawler clearly outclasses both of them and cuts a great angry promo.- 13 replies

Is Lawler trying to imply that Jarrett and Von Erich take steroids and then magically grow muscles without having to go to the gym? It sure sounds that way based on his convoluted explanation. Regardless, this was a pretty great segment. It had some degree of notoriety around 10-15 years ago, but this is the first time I got a chance to see it and it's pretty great. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Lawler told Jerry Jarrett that he was going to accuse his son of being a steroid user on live television. "Nobody will believe me, Jerry - I'm a heel! Heels are supposed to lie!"

[1990-02-03-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos

I guess "Ultimate Challenge" will be the buzz phrase for this Wrestlemania. This is what happens when you mix cocaine with LSD, kids.- 17 replies

[1990-02-03-WWF-Superstars] Jake Roberts vs Ted DiBiase
Cox replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
For some reason, even though I was watching for about a month before this took place, this is the first memory I have of wrestling. Great angle, although even at the time, I questioned why Boss Man would give the Million Dollar Belt back to Jake, considering it belonged to DiBiase and Jake stole it from him. Minor quibble, though. -
Good schtick filled match. Gotta love Mark Lowrence saying something to the effect of, "I haven't seen so much talking since Pat Sajak!" Welcome to wrestling in 1990.

Good match. Tom Zenk was game and showed good fire working in this spot, but this was pretty clearly the Flair show. Compare this to the Eaton match, where Eaton is actively doing things and getting in his signature spots, and you see the difference between "Flair vs Guy Who Brings Things To The Table" vs. "Flair vs Competent Guy." Nothing wrong with Flair vs Competent Guy, but it won't hold your attention quite like Flair vs Eaton.

I rewatched this again this evening and if anything, it was better the second time (funny how not being half-asleep makes the match better). I didn't think the beatdown by Sano went too long at all, as Liger had some good hope spots mixed in there as well. I really liked Sano in this being the ultimate dick, there's something about even the way he looks that makes him look like a huge asshole. I also liked that somebody actually hit the "battering ram into the ringpost" move here, as it seems every time somebody tries for that move, they get pushed face first into the ring post. Sano hitting it here retroactively justifies every attempt at it I've ever seen and hated because it never hits.

I'm partial to the first Bluegrass Brawl, but I really loved the Dirty White Boy/Tracy Smothers chain match, more than most people seem to love it, so that might be why.

I am not terrible at math and poor grammar still annoys me. Not to the point where I will point it out on a message board, more of a quiet seethe to myself, but still.

This is not what I was expecting out of a New Japan juniors match - and even though I like NJPW juniors matches, that's a good thing. Intense, hate-filled brawl that opened my eyes to Sano. I will want to watch this one again in a day or so, as I only about 3/4 watched this with other things going on, but this was damn fine pro wrestling and a fine way to close out the first month of 1990.

I posted a clip of that on YouTube a few years ago. One of the most amazing things to ever air on SMW TV.

I cannot stop watching this.
