  1. I liked the interplay between Barnes' queer act and Kellett's stereotypical bigotry. Kellett was notoriously difficult to work with, and when you see a Kellett match on TV, you know that it's going to be a Les Kellett match with the other guy along for the ride. Barnes brought a different dimension and so you got a different type of comedy than Kellett poking fun at his opponent and making him look hapless. Kellett probably had better wrestling matches in his career, but based on the footage we have of him, I think Barnes is by far his best matchup.
  2. It happens on some of the footage. It's annoying.
  3. I love the Barnes vs. Kellett matches. (I have another one from the ITV archives.) The subtext is glorious.
  4. Monterrery Thundercats trios matches might fit the bill.
  5. This was a good match, but not the Match of the Year contender you'd expect from two wrestlers of this caliber. In some ways, it suffered from the same shackles as the Christopher Daniels vs. Low Ki match in that the commentators couldn't stop talking about how legendary the early ROH bouts were. While it's true that those were the bouts that put ROH on the map, it's a heavy weight to carry around when working a return bout, especially when you know the fanbase has delusions of grandeur about ROH matches being like 90s All Japan. This wasn't a Triple Crown classic but more of a Champion Carnival match. Still a good match, but left you wanting more.
  6. This was supposed to be Joe vs. Daniels but apparently Joe had a staph infection and wasn't cleared to wrestle. So, they gave us this return matchup from the early days of ROH wrestling, which would have been cool if there had been more at stake. They made a go of it, and it was a decent match, but ROH tries to hype every bout as special which makes it stand out more when the workers come up short.
  7. This was a decent match. I liked how they tried to chop each other down like two oak trees doing battle.
  8. This was slightly better than their previous bout as they were allowed to go out there and wrestle without an interference. No Holds Barred basically amounted to a few weapon shots and the odd chokehold or two. Once again, your mileage may vary on how interesting you find Orton working holds. I have a soft spot for him after his Evolution run, but he's not the smoothest technician. Benoit's work was okay but nothing you haven't seen before.
  9. I was mistaken about this being a No DQ match. They had a No Holds Barred match a few weeks later right before the Rumble. Orton controlled most of this bout through headlocks, which isn't a bad base to work from, but the crowd weren't as interested in it as I was. The WWE machine wasn't firing and there wasn't a ton of heat for this. Orlando Jordan did another unexplained run-in, and Booker and his wife were involved in the finish. Benoit forced Orton to tap while the ref was unconscious, so that Cole could gripe about the injustice of Booker's victory, but it was tough to get excited about this angle.
  10. 93 is a solid knock. RIP.
  11. I think it's fair to say that the continuation of the Angle vs. Michaels rivalry failed to live up to the greatness of their WrestleMania match. You can probably also make the case that Angle's switch to RAW didn't live up to the hype. I don't think it's either wrestler's fault. The WWE simply wasn't firing on all cylinders at this point. Even in the WWE era, the product remains cyclical and this was not a hot period. Shawn vs. Vince does absolutely nothing for me. I can't imagine why anyone wanted to see that feud. The Vince I knew wanted to have Shawn Michaels' babies. This is a solid bout where Michaels' career is on the line. There's a modicum of drama, but Angle is switching to Smackdown so they need to write him out of the show as well. The action is good, but the bout deserved a better finish and should have been a main event.
  12. This was better than I thought it would be. I don't love how the writers are using concussions in all the storylines, but I bought into all of the title challenge shit. Apparently, this was Flair's first ladder match, which had me wondering what Flair spots prime Flair would have done in a ladder match. Old man Flair is a blast to watch. I'm not sure how it was received at the time. I hope it was positive. Flair blading so that his hair turns red is an awesome touch. Edge busts a gut to make this fun. I kinda wanted Flair to win even though I knew he wouldn't. The screwy finished worked a treat because I was invested enough to care. This was good TV.
  13. Joe brings his 2005 form to 2006. Probably not their best match against each other but more entertaining than anything the WWE was putting out. The concussion angle wasn't in good taste, however there was no denying how ruthless Joe was. The only criticism I'd make is that Daniels came across as somewhat hopeless. He's nowhere near as limited a worker as he appeared in this bout, and really should have came with more of a game plan to counter Joe's physicality, but I guess they wanted to continue the storyline of Joe brutalizing him.
  14. This was a good match. They didn't reinvent the wheel, but played to each other's strengths nicely. I really liked the finish. If you're going to dash the fans hopes then at least make it look good.
  15. In theory, these matches should be getting more exciting as the series goes longer, but they're not. Orton and Benoit have decent chemistry together, however there's only so much they can do if the match isn't laid out in a dramatic fashion. Basically, it finished with another BS ending to set-up the decider as a no-DQ match. That might have been okay if either man was on the verge of winning, but the match never got to that point. I'm not sure what was going on with the booking in the WWE as this kind of stuff is usually their bread and butter.
  16. It seems a bit excessive to have an Elimination Chamber match in January, but I guess they were capping off 2005. There was a serious lack of star power in this match, and I thought it was poorly laid out. The WWE usually does a better job of milking the drama from these main events, but the eliminations were weak and Michaels and Cena bled for no reason. I guess the booker thought having Masters and Carlito outlast the other wrestlers was some sort of clever twist, but I would have much preferred round 25 of Angle vs. Michaels vs. Cena. Kane's elimination was stupid considering the advantage he'd been given and losing Angle early also made no sense. Even Edge cashing in the the briefcase lacked any sort of suspense. Why they had to roll Vince out to announce the cash-in was beyond me. They should have gone with a surprise run-in instead. Cena's performance here was mediocre, but he didn't have much to work with. This was a waste of 50 minutes.
  17. These two have awesome chemistry, which I discovered for the first time recently when I watched their November bout. I'm not sold on the authenticity of Danielson's heel act, but I do like it when he works nasty dishes out a hurting. The finish here was meant to be a worked shoot that was suppose to drive the internet into a frenzy, but they didn't quite nail the execution of it and the commentators were clueless when it came to putting it over. Fortunately, it didn't detract from the bout too much. It's late in the piece, but 'd go as far to call Danielson/Strong one of the better matchups of the year.
  18. These guys called themselves the UWF.
  19. @Jetlag Went to Tokyo Comic Con today and some university students put on a wrestling show. Japanese university wrestling seems right up your alley.
  20. Not a lot of footage exists, but Pavillón Azteca had a lot of cartoon gimmicks.
  21. This was alright. Tenryu vs. Kobashi was a bit disappointing, though. Not really worth the price of admission.
  22. Really good match. Plenty of drama, especially with AJ's busted mouth. Some sloppy moments, but I thought the commentators did a good job of covering for their mistakes. I'm totally onboard with Joe being the Wrestler of the Year. In fact, I think he won it fairly handily.
  23. That's tough. I think I'd go to Elysee-Montmarte to see George Kidd. I'm a big Henri Le Mao fan too.
  24. This was a very good match. Danielson continues to cultivate his heel champ gimmick here. it feels like he's cosplaying at times. Danielson is a good wrestler but that's a performance area where I definitely feel he's overrated. It's when he's locked in and delivering an ass kicking that he truly shines. I'd never seen Strong before and had idea what to expect. Turns out he's a compact and well-rounded worker. He was definitely game in this. He took a licking and kept on ticking. The ending where Danielson decided he'd finally had enough of Strong coming back at him was one of the best finishes I've ever seen. The commentator mentioned another match between these two from the week before. i definitely need to check that out.
  25. BIg, dumb NOAH pro-wrestling. Dave loved this. I can understand why, but I think we've all seen these tropes done better in other matches.
