  1. Fun match in full and the Mongo turn works a bit as Flair has been on his own with the ladies and Arn as his lackey for the first part of the year. Now he has his unit which seems to have some new life breathed into it. Debra shows who wore the pants in the marriage with Mongo.
  2. This was a sweet match. Sting has looked pretty damn good in ring in 1996 based on what we have seen and he delivers a good performance here. Regal is just a menace and a supreme dick throughout the match and it is a real shame that he didn't do a whole lot as a result of this. I think a bruising Regal still being a heel but going against the NWO would have been a great angle in the fall for the company overall. I would recommend seek out this match. ***3/4
  3. Really fun brawl but probably too short to be a great match overall. The action was intense and unique and Dusty's commentary still holds up as a highlight. Yet, while rewatching, this didn't feel all that different from something like Simmons vs. Jack from SuperBrawl besides Dusty commentary and the bathroom gag. So while this is a lot of fun to watch and a really good match, it does fall short of the great status and I do feel it has been overrated in some circles over time. ***1/2
  4. I think this match is great and feels like a great way to show off Rey's aerial ability while also providing some of his storytelling and other babyface aspects that put him a level above as an overall worker. Dean for his part also showed some great attributes during this match by remaining focused and grounding Rey when he could. I love seeing strategy battles play off and this match displayed how great junior wrestling could be in WCW with the company now on a clear upswing. ****

  6. Parv, you should watch 5/21/93 vs. Misawa and see what you think.
  7. This makes it look like they are moving Invasion Attack away from being the #2-3 show of the year (depending on where G-1 Finals slot) and moving this in. I can't fathom anyone wanting to see Togi vs. Ishii AGAIN as the NEVER title really needs some juice added back to it. Rest of the card seems to be the blowoff for a lot of the stuff the first half of the year to propel into the second half.
  8. Thanks Mick. High praise although this is an easy show to digest just based on the quality of the PPV.
  9. Gave this a listen on the way to work and really enjoyed. I think this event is more to my liken over something like lucha va Voom as I kind of got an exploitation vibe from lucha va Voom of it being a wrestling show upcharged for other "acts." This seems more like an event overall that happens to have a theme centered around lucha libre. The characters and atmosphere sounded really neat and Michael seemed to have a good understanding of how to bring something different to the table that just a lucha-centric indy show.
  10. http://placetobenation.com/good-will-wrestling-pale-horse-lucha-the-art-of-lucha-libre/ Will is joined by Rob Naylor and Michael "Monster" Thomas to discuss this Tuesday's "Pale Horse Lucha: The Art of Lucha Libre" exhibit in St. Petersburg, FL. They discuss their love of lucha, what you can expect at the exhibit and Rob Naylor's role on Tuesday. If you are in the St. Petersburg area on Cinco de Mayo, don't miss out on Pale Horse Lucha: The Art of Lucha Libre!!! This is part of a double shot that is released today on PTBN along with the latest Exile on Badstreet that is located here: http://placetobenation.com/exile-on-badstreet-4-the-art-of-the-tecnico-plus-2015-1st-quarter-lucha-year-in-review/
  11. Agree with most of the posts here. Everything up to the Tenryu elimination was fab. Tenryu vs. Choshu/Fujinami/Hashimoto was fantastic and multi-layered. Him running traffic on the WAR team was great and the elimination of Hase was handled well. On the surface, I can't critique Tenryu's elimination too much as it was done superbly and in an electric way but yeah the WAR team just didn't have enough muscle or threat to continue the match at the fever pace that the first half set up. Chono looked more spirited here than at other portions throughout the decade which was nice to see and Hara gave a nice performance which resonated more in the fresh wake of his passing. Overall, these multi man New Japan matches are always good and this was no exception even if the second half prevents it from reaching the tip top standards that this feud has produced so far. ****
  12. This starts right off hand with a crackling crowd and Tamura slapping Yammamoto right across the face. The opening sequence had me staring in disbelief making sure I didn’t have my DVD player in 1.5 speed. I can enjoy some methodical, focused mat work but this was on a speed and athleticism that was simply breathtaking. The match settles down just a big with Yammamoto finding the advantage and taking a dominant position peppering away with punches to the midsection. Tamura fights up because no way is he accepting a rope break in this match. We get some nasty dueling leg work. Tamura cranks back with a half crab with the leg of Yammamoto in a nasty position overall. Yammamoto was right next to the ropes yet he decides to choke and claw his way out in a great battle of intensity. There is some instances where the ref almost steps in but let’s these guys go at it. I can’t forget to mention the pace here because it is absolutely breakneck but the intensity isn’t faltering because of that as judged by the punches that are vicious. Yammamoto lets his emotions get the best of him and is yellowcarded for our first real break of the match 7:30 in. Yammamoto keeps going for position but he is unable to break through but he shows tenacity and finally is able to gain some sort of advantage. Tamura ends up on top after Yammamoto exhausts all that energy and throws some nasty punches of his own but in a cooling, calming manner showing ace tendencies. He reaches for the cross armbreaker and almost gets choked as a result due to being slightly overzealous. This results in the first rope break of the match 11 minutes in. We really get our first stand up exchange here and Tamura bullies him into the corner. Tamura is persistent when they go to the mat and rides a choke which becomes a disguise for him to try to lock on the arm breaker again. Yammamoto is able to work out of it again and results back to his trusty body punches. Tamura won’t be denied and nearly locks on the arm breaker when Yammamoto has to have a rope break for the first time 14 minutes in. A nasty great strikes exchange results popping the crowd like crazy. Tamura goes after the leg but Yammamoto is able to spin out and again come up on top. Yammamoto locking on the leg submission with Tamura breaking and having to be humiliated by reaching the ropes 16 minutes in is just great facial work. We are seeing someone that came in as the king of the hill realize that someone that has always been a peg below him is becoming an equal in real time. Another standup and again Tamura cant throw Yammamoto down. Another nasty flurry from Yammamoto with the crowd popping. Tamura wont give up and does his best to exchange when he can but Yammamoto puts him down and triumphantly but prematurely raises his hand in victory. Tamura is now desperate being one point away from losing. He releases a ferocious strike face that stuns Yammamoto and evens the playing field with an electric minute left. Both guys are gassed and the match has flown by. Yammamoto knows he has owned the mat so he tries to go there but Tamura isn’t falling for that and forces him back on his feet. Rapid fire shots but Yammamoto fights back. Tamura locks on a leg lock as a last ditch as time expires. This was an exhausting, hate filled exercise that told a tremendous story and featured a great athletic display and performance of the wrestlers involved. This is the apex of shootstyle. *****

Finished up the show as well and thought it was one of the lesser New Japan shows overall. My favorite match was actually the Bullet Club vs. Naito/Honma/Shelley match with the opener a close second.
  14. What is the argument for Fliar in 93 Parv? That seems like a really big stretch.
  15. Pretty fab match overall. We get a nice brawl at the start and this did a really good job much like the previous New Japan tag of showcasing the lesser members of the team without them feeling insignificant. Here they played into the finish and really cranked some nasty submissions on each other. Ozaki and Kansai being two of my favorite joshi workers ever provide great hate and purpose to everything going on. Finish is indecisive in a way but made me want to seek out more from the feud overall. ****
  16. I enjoyed this a lot too. Fire gets outsmarted and its a great moment when Wolfie realizes what has happened. Conman was effective phrasing. Lawler is a great schemer here. We get a big match set up at the MSC between the two with some good stips actually.
  17. Man Hashi is so awesome here. He wants a piece of Yamazaki at all costs and is just a beast within all of their interactions. The crowd is really cooking for their exchanges and the respective seconds add to the match while realizing they arent the focal point really. ilzuka clipping his legs was a great moment to give just a glimmer of hope to that team. Still, Hirata hits a powerbomb on Yamazaki a minute later and all feels really lost for that tandem. The desperation and immediate tab wit the armbreaker was great as an upset and Hashimoto has to process things for a second as the crowd goes apeshit. Terrific stuff. ****
  18. Not a bad spectacle type match but not a lot of great execution. One of those matches that you are glad to see once but also feel that is enough to satisfy for a lifetime. Muto has took a rep drop overall for me with his 90's stuff. **1/2
  19. Razor ups the amount once again but Kid is being savvy with this and letting him work himself into a bigger frenzy and therefore offer more money.
  20. Excellent match with Pegasus showing his potential and really putting ina performance to get over. Samurai is always game seemingly in these big performances and we had a really nice tournament final. We had some great action and escalation of action overall. I thought even though the matwork didn't really focus on a body part it potrayed the tempo of the match from that point forward. Great stuff all around ****1/4
  21. Randomly put in Strike Force Superstars into youtube and this was the first result. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUjpZ-hBpyk One minute in and we get Chico name drop and a saying about him staying off the microphone. 30 seconds later, another mention about him cheating. We get another mention about Strike Force needing to do legal tags. He does admit that Hitman makes a mistake in a nice piece of color work. "I can't believe Santana is going to exchange with Neidhart." The heels take over now and we havent had any praise for either member of Strike Force in this match from Jesse so far. Brillant tag team wrestling is the call when the Hart's cheat. Good praise on how smart Neidhart was keeping Morella tied up while Hart hammered away on the outside. Outrage when Martel comes in to break up a pin. Bruno defends the action. Hart comes in illegally and we get a "one a piece" call from Jesse. "I bet Chico wish he was back on the microphone right now." Tito kicks out and we get a claim that Morella counted slow. Martel tries to come in and Jesse points out how dumb that is as Tito gets more damage done. Again, not one positive comment for Strike Force besides their speed before the bell rung. Now we get a mention about how Bruno would stoop to any level to keep his title when he was a competitor. Hot tag made to Martel to a big pop. Martel does a great house of fire sequence. Hart breaks up a crossbody and Vince is outraged with that. Double scoop slam and mention from Jesse of a double team. Martel wins with the Boston Crab and Jesse only has to say that it took a double team to do it. Again, this was a pure heel commenting job by Jesse. In the ten minute match, we didn't get one bit of praise for what the faces did and this was their crowning moment of winning the tag titles. As a heel commenting job, it wasn't bad but I do think this match helps the case that Jesse wasn't near as "fair" to face opponents at giving praise as is claimed at times.
  22. Reason I think you're wrong is that I was literally one-in-a-thousand sort of kid -- most kids' favourite wrestlers were babyfaces you were meant to cheer, my faves were guys like Ted DiBiase and IRS. Vast majority of fans were not heel fans. Vince didn't come across as dumb, because he was voicing what the majority of the audience were supposedly thinking. Ventura's logic was often logic twisted and distorted through his lens of dastardly evil anyway. What made Jesse so effective, though, is that he would temper his comments by not being ridiculously over-the-top one-sided and by giving credit to babyfaces now and then. He was very good at giving off at least the ostensible appearance of being vaguely impartial, whereas a Bobby Heenan was just completely 100% transparently pro-heel to the point where he had no credibility (in kayfabe terms). So Jesse was able to generate (kayfabe) credibility while also being pretty pro-heel most of the time. Vince was a total over-the-top-loon mark for Hogan on occasion, but don't forget that the vast majority of the time babyfaces were in the right (morally) so Vince de facto had the advantage of being right in those arguments (since it was Jesse twisting things). We remember the times when Jesse was actually right, but most of the time if you follow any of the arguments through Vince (and the babyface) were actually "right" (kayfabe-wise, morally, whatever). But also don't forget Jesse's team with Monsoon either -- Gorilla would also react to Jesse's arguments. And he wasn't as OTT as Vince, and he never came across as "dumb". I think you are overplaying the heel line. Even so, maybe I am the 1 in a 1000 kid on the other side but I could not stand Tito and even Steamboat to a degree as a kid based on Jesse's commentary essentially making them jobbers. You are someone that champions Tito stuff now. Don't you think his lessened internet reputation is a direct result at times of most people who became fans after 1985 knowing him only as Chico the jobber instead of a former IC champion that acomplished a lot early on in his WWF career? Part of that is Monsoons fault but Jesse running him down doesn't get a pass outright. Gorilla came across as "dumb" all the time. There is multiple instances where Gorilla gets painted into a double standard argument with Jesse where he condones the heels cheating after praising faces. Him saying the faces are having fun really comes to mind off hand as a clear straw man argument he is forced to make because Jesse is forcing the issue and calling him out.
  23. I guess it is more the notion that Hogan is playing a character well in spite of the angle presented to him but Hansen is disgusting in your eyes for doing the same thing. I just see it as a double standard. I don't know if it is a regional thing with the chewing tobacco but for a wild, crazy Texan like Hansen, it does fit his character narrative to me.

    NJPW 4/29/15

Watched the main event and while I liked it better than their match at WK, it still didn't do a whole lot for me. These are two big lumpy dudes having a beefy fight but this again featured no psychology and I just can't get behind that type of match with the way Makabe's strikes are. When Jay White is throwing stiffer looking forearms and strikes than your bruiser character, it takes a lot to stretch my believability. Also, I hate they just went back Makabe essentially resetting the first four months of the year.
  25. I think Tony and Ross worked wonderfully together. Tony took on more of a color style roll but they were able to compliment each other and get over strategies for the matches. Havoc 91 may honestly be one of my favorite commented PPV's in history.
