Chyna shows her promo ability right off the start. I have enjoyed seeing Mankind become the babyface character. He comes down to get a piece of HHH but gets beaten down. He sits up and puts on HHH's crown. Vince calling Chyna unladylike is humorous.

Really great match that seems pretty forgotten. The storyline works well and the work within the match especially in Austins control segment was spectacular. I liked the escalation of the match from solid matwork to Austin sending him to the outside and into the stairs and on the concrete. I liked that Ross called out that only the girls were cheering for Shawn when he makes his comeback. Ending isn't wonderful and felt like the first in a series but played off what was going on between these two so I was fine with it.

Good Bret promo but its tough not to watch the glory of Pillman and his expression behind him. Bret riles the crowd up then gets chased by the corporate brass. Bret yelling freedom of speech and Pillman shining the spotlight at Brisco are the highlights here.

Final minutes of this match looked good with Mankind bumping like a loon and getting sympathy. The pedigree on the table especially looked vicious. HHH gets the win and then delivers a post match beatdown.

Austin flushes out Pillman. These two feuding with each other has been fun stuff all around.

Cant believe Saturn did this with a legit injury and if he is legit hurt, why have the eliminators win?

I had talked some about the stuff on the yearbook from ECW feeling lackluster since Barely Legal. This ended with a huge a vengeance here. This was one of the best intertwining segments I have ever seen. Tons of fun stuff in this and a blast to watch straight through. The Raven vs. dreamer match was a really terrific garbage brawl I thought with intensity, violence, plunder, and playing off the two plus year storyline with a conclusive finish. Things only amplify from there with the post match which is an absolute blast to watch. The Taz vs. Sabu match was probably my least favorite sequence but still really good and a clever finish that gets over Taz but still allows Sabu to win. The final payoff with the negotiations and match between Taz and Douglas made sense and ended the segment with a memorable moment. Awesome stuff.

That one is just over 3 hours, WTBBP has it beaten with Starrcade 1989 with Loss.

I still think our AWA monstrosity has it beat Parv, but that is a little unfair comparison.

Didn't Harper work all four in the same week though?

Good tear apart of the studio that needed to be over the top to get Dreamer over as serious. This ending the show on an appropriate tone. Maybe USWA isn't dead just yet.

Razor and Diesel have a quick dispute and then Diesel attacks and spraypaints Razor. This shit is weird. Is he Scott Hall or Razor?

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel with Luther Biggs having a role. Biggs gives his advice on how he can improve Christopher. Billy JOe looks like he just gave a powerpoint presentation under the ring. He blasts Christopher with two guitars. Not a bad beatdown but not as good as the stuff in the parking lot either.

I like this version of Lawler's gear compared to what he wearing in WWF. Fergie gets called the original Mr. Wrestling. Can someone explain what the mirror was in the studio for around this piont? Dreamer comes out and has to be restrained. Lawler eggs him on and the crowd is hot for all of this.

I really enjoyed this as a first match of things to come as they really ratcheted up the hate for each other. The match starts well enough with all the big pairings looking good against each other. I really liked the slip under that Santo did in their sequence. Things intensify when Ultimo gets taken out and this leaves the rudo side to go to a dark place as they waylay on Fiera and Casas. The bump Casas takes into the chairs is nutty. Ultimo comes back for his triumphant comeback and I was surprised to see him get the pin on Santo but it felt like a deserved and feel good moment.

Superb match between these two. I agree with Loss that the mat work is what really made this match reach that extra level for me. The nearfalls were really dramatic and the switch in dynamic for the match after the piledriver to Chono on the floor are fantastic. Crowd heat is something that has been discussed recently and this would be great with a dead crowd, but this is one of the best crowds of all time and they really elevated the match and made it feel that much more special. I was glad that the first STF didn't end the match as it felt like they had more in the tank. The finish was appropriate and a sublime ending. The visual of the 3 Muskateers raising each other's arms does feel just as significant as Misawa beating Jumbo a year earlier. This is neck and neck with Warrior vs. Savage as my MOTY so far.

[1991-08-11-NJPW-G1 Climax] Masa Chono vs Shinya Hashimoto
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
I enjoyed this a good deal but agree that the draw was better. Chono actually dominated more of the early going than I thought targeting the leg. He really seems to seems like a competitor up against Hash. Then Hash regroups on the outside and slams the mat in frustration and he takes over the match from that point forward. Really nice work by hash but they still were giving Chono snippets of hope. The tap and build to the STF was beautifully done and that move has really been elevated throughout this whole tournament. Really good match and props to hash for working overtime to put it over. -
[1991-08-10-GWF] The Patriot vs Chris Walker / The Patriot vs Buddy Landell
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Patriot guts out a win but injures himself in the process. Landell immediately pounces and he looks way better here than he does at any of the 1990 stuff I have watched recently. He has slimmed down considerably and his attack on the injured shoulder is much more focused. He even keeps the moonwalk in his arsenal which I have a weird fondness for. Patriot is able to get the victory in the end and is your new Global TV Champion. -
That is so embarrassing. I may not and probably wouldn't agree with an Alvarez ballot but the least he could do is give the discussion 1/10th of the thought that individuals here that don't even vote do.
-
I would agree with this except in the case of the NWO. I always enjoyed their disregard for the establishment and how they always gave a presence of arriving fashionably late.

Most of these feel like a cheat. However, if you never use the competed in WCW/NWA (starting with Starrcade 83) line, these are the names I came up with. 1. Dustin Rhodes - this is a little bit of a stretch but he was involved in a pretty high profile angle in WWF before they let him and Dusty go out to pasture 2. Butch Reed - This is a weird one as well since Mid South is probably his #1 but I would put up his Doom run above his run in WWF as the Natural 3. Paul Roma - Talk about damning with faint praise but being the worst Horseman ever and teaming with Arn/Orndorff gave him a better sustained run that what he did with Power & Glory I didn't include Cactus since he only did some jobber matches.

I like them more than you but I will fully admit they are not above having a ton of table setting matwork that doesn't lead to a ton of interesting stuff. I do think they can remain fairly interesting in the final stretch being fed into the moves of their opponents or when they start throwing bombs at each other. Terry Gordy himself is someone that I think would be up there in boring workers for me. No doubt he has had a ton of great matches but even in the Freebirds six mans, he is usually the least interesting person on his team for me.

I liked the Race vs. Larry Z match from August 27, 1990 in AWA.

I would say this was good but did feel a lot like a treading water match. No new ground was broke and this was hurt in the yearbook concept. When I watched this through my big AJPW watch, I knew it wasn't as high quality as what came before it, but it does seem kind of sad that almost every other promotion in the world is on this big hot streak, and stuff feels really stunted here. I think Kawada was legit loopy for the final elbow exchange as the german felt really tacked on. The final sequence was very high impact but nothing that led to it really resonated. Probably up there with 7/99 and Carnival 98 as their worst matches.
