Recommendations for 20 Crockett TV matches to watch
soup23 replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
Wanted to chime in that I started with the April 88 Windham/Tully match since it may be taken down anyday now. I haven't watched the 1/88 match in quite some time but I thought this match was great. 16 minutes of all action, Windham killing himself by throwing himself into the guardrail twice, and some of the best delayed selling I have ever seen from both men. I also liked the finish since based on JJ's interference during the match, they ran through the gambit of predictable finishes but each one got neutralized leading to a satisfactory finish. I never will understand why Windham turned as the trio of him/Luger/Sting along with the last ride of Dusty going against the Horseman seems like the perfect ready made feud of 1988 -
[1991-03-21-NJPW-Starrcade in Tokyo] Ric Flair vs Tatsumi Fujinami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I probably align mostly with childs on this one. Early 10-15 minutes were pretty ho hum with a lot of instances where i thought Fujinami looked actively bad. Then Flair bladed and this turned around big time and the ending stretch was pretty hot. Finish is dumb as hell. Good show overall though with 4 matches at least flirting with 3 stars. -
My distaste for the Steiners is pretty well known by now so I was not expecting much from this. It actually may have been better than I would have thought going in as I thought it was a very good all action type match. MOTY is pretty lol worthy but I think we all could have predicted that coming in already.

[1991-03-21-NJPW-Starrcade in Tokyo] Sting vs Great Muta
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I agree that the psychology was a little wonky for this match and not a ton made sense at time but there is just something about these two in the ring together that always feels like a comic book coming to life. This is nothing that I would call great or even good but it certainly was fun to me and I think these two together are a great special attraction match for a card.- 12 replies

[1991-03-21-NJPW-Starrcade in Tokyo] Jushin Liger vs Akira Nogami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
Liger is 2 for 2 so far this year with me. I thought this was really good stuff with some nice body work and Liger being resilient and throwing some nasty offense to put him away.- 14 replies

[1991-03-18-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Roddy Piper and Ted DiBiase
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I was wondering the same thing about the motorcycle injury. Great stuff all around and this feels like the third most important match for mania ahead of the IC and Tag titles. In fact, I don't know how much there was to it but Nasties vs. Harts based on yearbook footage was around #6 on card importance. -

Weird trio and not an angle I could get into. I also found it odd that they chose to close the show with this.- 6 replies

[1991-03-16-USWA-Memphis TV] Bill Dundee vs Sgt. O'Reilly
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
Good insight into how good Dundee could be as a studio worker as this was three minutes but featured some nifty work. Dundee blades from the Austin beatdown to put it over and he gets the Oscar treatment getting his promo cut off. -
[1991-03-16-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert & Jeff Jarrett vs Texas Boys
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
This looked like another hot match and is a primitive set up for the 8 man tag coming up on Monday. -
Kings gear in the MSC match is terrible. I feel conflicted with the Fargo stuff because it does pay off Funk's promo but it does cheapen the unified title since as I have commented before, Funk has actually stabilized. Funk throwing everything was sick. Match overall looks at least to be a great spectacle like their first two matches we have. Finish pissed me off and didn't set well since it didn't feel as much like Funk got his comeuppance as he was screwed. This honestly should have been Lawlers biggest win since he beat Von Erich. Brawl back in the studio is a good one and this was a fine way for the Hangman to make their presence known.

Time for Hogan to pump the last bit of hype in Mania and it seems weird seeing Hogan in a live setting as most of his stuff has been in the green screen. I also liked the lack of interaction Hogan and Slaughter had with each other besides the Main Event stuff. I still havent found this angle as tasteless as the hype it receives.

[1991-03-15-USWA Texas] Steve Austin vs Gary Young (Coal Miner's Glove)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
Young as a face still seems weird to hear but he does garner a good response from the crowd. Austin is pretty much in his WCW gear by now with the robe and all. I thought this match was solid for a show opener but nothing I will remember a year from now. Pritchard has really established himself as a big name.- 7 replies

[1991-03-14-NJPW-Big Fight Series] Jushin Liger vs Norio Honaga
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
Along with the consensus that this was a nice find and if it is the first of things to come, I welcome it. Honaga started the match off hot and remained focus on his attack of Liger. They also did a great job in making the upset seem logical but not predictable. Bolsters the case that there was some variety in 1990 New Japan junior matches.- 11 replies

Really memorable stuff from Ted here and his treatment of the limo driver was great.

[1991-03-11-WWF-Pensacola, FL] Shawn Michaels vs Mr Perfect
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
I didn't like the opening boxing exchange at all and thought the punches looked weak. Then Michaels takes that crazy bump and this match turns around. Perfects work was pretty good and focused. Finish was pretty crappy and overbooked but did help advance storylines heading into Mania. -
Wrestlers Who Were More "Over" Than Their Push
soup23 replied to Dylan Waco's topic in Pro Wrestling
I would throw Benoit into this category to from around 1996-1999. He was getting consistently very good to great responses that rivaled main eventers from Great American Bash 1996 on. Yet, he didn't main event a PPV until November 1999 and even in that match with Bret Hart, he was treated like an up and comer on the brink of stardom. -
I think most of the hate from the Freebirds results from the fact that most people posting on message board's today are not that familar with their Texas stuff and just have a working knowledge of their feud with the Von Erichs. Even though they still had some good matches, The Freebirds from 1989 was one of the lamest and most dated wrestling acts I can remember.
