Different styles of the NWA touring champ
alexoblivion replied to Johnny Sorrow's topic in Pro Wrestling
For what it's worth, Dory seems to hold a higher opinion of Thesz. Seems like the word on Thesz as well is that if he deemed a wrestler to be too gimmicky, he would go out of his way to make them look bad. Any chance Funk mentions when the Romero/Thesz match took place? -
Really enjoyed the Sheik/Melby match from 57 and it makes me wonder when exactly he started transitioning to the more violent stuff, and at what point he added the pencil, blood, and fire, as well if anyone was doing that before him. I’ve read online that Danny McShain and Doc Sarpolis are some of the guys who popularized blading, so could that be something he picked up in Texas? At a certain point in his career, maybe as his body broke down, it seems like Sheik wrestles the same intense fast paced match, not saying that’s a bad thing, and how good the match is depends on what his opponent brings to the table.

That's pretty great. Reading about it online, apparently Jim Dickinson was brought in to coproduce.

Just find it somewhat narrow minded of Dave to think that because the match didn't meet whatever his standards are, that no one besides the most hardcore of fans could possibly think it was a great match. To say that the match was not even over with its audience is ludicrous.

Watched that Dory and Murdoch vs Sakaguchi and Yoshimura tag a few days ago. While each guy had their moments, thought Dory was the best guy in that match. Murdoch and Funk made a good team with their quick tags and cheap shots. That vk account with all that JWA has some good stuff.

Meltzer's reaction to the Villano IV vs Blue Demon Jr discussion on twitter was somewhat entertaining. Not really surprised that he wasn't too into it, just more surprised that his criticism of it being slow mo chain wrestling, didn't really seem to apply to the match.

Judging by some of his artwork and insults, it seems Raymond Pettibon is a fan. Wonder if Nick Mundy was ever a member of DVDR.

I like the original Blackjacks and I don't find David Von Erich to be overrated. At times, I find the WWE brand to be the equivalent of what Ed Hardy is to fashion.

Here's a question, which Fuller is considered the better worker? Not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but didn't Foley write that Robert was more talented than his brother, but terrible with his money.
-
Some names to maybe consider when discussing top workers of the 70's; Chris Colt, Don Jardine, Wahoo, Mil Mascaras, Ron Fuller, Buddy Colt, and Karl Kox. Not trying to argue that their better than Jumbo, but perhaps a few of the top workers of the decade. Regarding Valentine and footage, I think the tag match in Japan with Krofatt may be the longest match of his that is available.

But what caused this? Was it to further separate themselves from AAA?

How insightful was the WOL interview? Not surprisingly, most of his interviews don't really spend too much time in regards to his time in wrestling, though there's one he did with vulture from a few years back that has some interesting stuff. He had a wrestling zine in the eighties with a few pages popping up online a few years back. I was surprised that he wrote he grew up on Montreal wrestling in the zine, as I was expecting AWA.

Does CMLL have a ban on blading? Wikipedia tells me that matches with blood are not broadcast.

Bob Mould comes to mind. Was reading an interview with The Men last year and one of the members mentioned they had the vhs Wrestlemania boxset for entertainment in the tour van.The Letterman clip is cool, but once out of childhood, I'm pretty sure he ceased being a fan.

That's amazing on so many levels. A Watt's fan. Haven't read Aesthetics as I went with A Whore Just Like The Rest to get an overall sampler of his writing career, not sure if I will go beyond that. Does Dave ever talk about his uncle? From his interviews and writing, I know Richard was a wrestling fan so they did have that in common. Any chance they have similar music taste or is that a long shot?
-
Just wanted to double check, is Richard Meltzer really Dave's uncle?
-
Finishing a match with a cracked skull is pretty crazy.
-
Oh OK. I was hoping that for the sake of craziness that it was the other way around. Don't remember the details, but didn't he kick someone on a subway for trying to film him a few years back.

What's the story on the acid fueled booking?
-
haha phenomenal. I feel like that probably happens on a weekly basis.

Hearing Austin and Regal endorse Flair as goat was awesome, as was their discussion on British wrestling. For some reason, the proper wrist lock talk between the two was really fascinating to me. Someone should also email Austin a link to ohtani's jacket lucha blog or some lucha recommendations.

Wrestling in unusual contexts

Pitchfork has an interview with them from last month talking about the inspiration for the song as well, which is kind of interesting. -
Wrestling with History & Teaching

On a secondary and higher education level, I think, or hope that the students wouldnt have a hard time identifying some of the major mainstream 20th century figures. Teenagers not recognizing Lennon would surprise me, as I assumed he was pretty ingrained and commercialized into American culure by this point. But reaching back to the 19th century and before, yeah I agree, it would be a struggle for most high school students, and for some of the more specific content, a struggle on both levels. The 90s Spice girls and Noel Gallagher/Tony Blair picture made me smile as I think that one in particular would get a nice blank reaction with students in America. On a higher education level, I could see some of the names coming down to things such as interest, background, and major. From talking with some of the people in the theater history course, I dont think they were familiar with Sartre, Pinter, Camus, Artuad or some of those general figures before the class, nor were they really receptive to the stuff during the class. But for the english or theater majors, it was a different story. On a side note, I just asked my sister if she was familiar with kitchen sink dramas. After giving her a high, rambling, explanation of the genre, she proceeded to read what she found on google. With that being said, its nice how easy it is to take a name or subject and go down the google wormhole in seconds.
