  1. I really wish this was on in full. Among the many defining images in pro wrestling is Michael Hayes selling being whipped and if memory serves the bulk of the whipping action is early on and produces some good bits of psychology working that gimmick into the match. And after hearing that the whips were actually bought at a sex shop I'm all the more adamant that this should have been on in full.
  2. Looking forward to this show as it will be the 1st one that I can listen to while watching the matches fresh as this show has been on pace with my viewing since I was on episode #8. Looking forward to my 1st experience of just listening to a podcast synched up while watching the matches. Loving this concept.
  3. Can't wait to listen to this.
  4. Absolutely. The Freebirds match could very easily move up to #5 for me as those bottom three are interchangeable. I just thought that with Larry Henning doing absolutely nothing and almost the entire match being Zenk FIP that the match did not distinguish itself. Still, I really enjoyed Michael Hayes in the match and this is by no means an example of the Freebirds not being good in the AWA. They were great here and great on this disc. The problem in this match is on the other side. Larry was useless and not enough Blackwell. In a perfect world, we would have gotten a heated Blackwell-Gordy exchange here setting a singles match between the two.
  5. I'm all in on a Masked Superstar 3 disc comp.
  6. Thanks for having me on the show. My apologies for being late, but it seems that the older I get the more life becomes an organized disaster. Thoroughly enjoyed being on the show. Here are my rankings for this evenings card: 1. Sgt. Slaughter vs. Boris Zuhkov (9/28/85) 2. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Rick Martel (7/19/85) 3. Little Tokyo & Lord Littlebrook vs. Cowboy Lang & Little Coco (7/18/85) 4. Terry Gordy vs. Rick Martel (August 1985) 5. Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens vs. Greg Gagne & Curt Hennig (6/13/85) 6. Crusher Blackwell vs. Kamala (Bodyslam Challenge) (9/28/85) 7. Crusher Blackwell, Larry Hennig & Tom Zenk vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (8/22/85)
  7. Sounds good. I have VERY fond memories of Havoc '89. A personal favorite of my childhood. My work schedule is absolutely stupid, so it's a rarity that I'm free (and awake) at the appropriate time for a show.
  8. I think I could do tonight as well if you all want a newbie.
  9. I'm actually free. Although after 60 hours at work this week there is admittedly a 60% chance I'll be asleep sooner than later, a 20% chance I go nuts on booze and loose women, and a 20% chance I'll call in.
  10. Time permitting, I'm down and will join when your spot in the set lines up with where I left off.
  11. 1. Crusher Blackwell vs. Mad Dog Vachon (Algerian Death Match) (5/22/83) 2. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Wahoo McDaniel (8/28/83) 3. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Brad Rheingans (7/3/83) 4. Crusher Blackwell & Ken Patera vs. High Flyers (11/24/83) 5. Crusher Blackwell & Ken Patera vs. Dino Bravo & Steve O (8/28/83) 6. Hulk Hogan vs. Mr. Saito (8/28/83) 7. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Mad Dog Vachon (11/24/83) The top two matches are stellar and 4 and a half discs into the set they're in my Top 5. I liked the Bock-Rheingans match considerably as a great top guy vs. mid guy TV bout and it's firmly middle of the pack of the set for me.
  12. I'm not going to say it's a good cover. But I'll take Joan Jett over AC/DC just about any day. This was one of the best music videos ever for getting a wrestler over. Sure, Lawler hardly needed help getting over, but if you wanted to show a Lawler novice why he's one of the best ever and do so in less than 2 minutes....right there.
  13. Just noticed these podcasts and am in the middle of listening to this 1st episode. These are enjoyable on their own, but will legitimately come in handy once you catch up to where I took my break from the set. "He just wanted to cut his nostril, Chinatown style, but he couldn't reach."-Johnny Sorrow = Incredible.
  14. I'm in the Loss camp. Maybe the best hidden gem so far in a Yearbook. At least in contention. …How charming is this coming right after the WrestleMania main event? I mean, we just watched the main event of the marque show form one of the biggest companies in the world. A large arena with lots of spectacle. Here, we get a little Japanese indy shot via handheld going back and forth between color and black and white. And on the one hand you had two guys feuding over who was the chosen instrument of the gods (or something, but they sure didn’t discuss the title much) and here you have a guy in a gi versus a guy in black trunks and black boots. …Anyhow, this is rad. They work it around their differing techniques early on, but they manage to work in brawling and blood. It’s a rounds match and they use that to their advantage to build the tension like chapters in a book. And the crowd follows them right along. So much better than Hogan-Warrior it’s not even funny. Hogan-Warrior was like watching a fight between two super heroes unfold in a comic book. That’s fun and all, but this was more like what wrestling should be. This is an athletic contest that escalates into a fight. A balance between sporting athleticism, with the constant threat of legit violence. …There’s a seeming start and restart after both men are left laying. It’s a long break in-between and the two finally coming back together to go at it some more. This is somewhat disturbing in the context of watching it in 2013 as it just looks like two guys who have suffered concussions being forced to continue competing by their coach.
  15. Catching up on these podcasts and I had to stop by really quick to say that this was among the more enjoyable podcasts I've listened to in some time. I can see myself listening to it again someday as it's a somewhat timeless edition that can be revisited.

  18. 1. Very much looking forward to the Patera-Tommy Rich feud being covered on the inevitable Tommy Rich set that I imagine is a few years away, but remains the set that I am most looking forward to. 2. http://youtu.be/TkKCqcpAcVQ ...observe 1:20-1:35 mark.
  19. Wow, I sure would have liked to have seen a Slaughterhouse v. Horsemen mini feud as a placeholder for TV before Sting's return. Shall I assume that this was taped before WrestleWar? If memory serves, Buzz broke his wrist on a top rope splash at WrestleWar and that's why he was suddenly gone. Is that accurate?
  20. Warrior: "There were warriors that made similar sacrifices. Injected themselves with the poison of mankind." Taken as a whole, the 'Ultimate Challenge' that this Yearbook seems to be building to is a 3 Way Drug Test pitting: Ho Kogan v. The Ultimate Warrior v. Jerry Lawler. I can't wait and I predict Sting attempts to run in and make it a 4-Way contest for all the marbles, but blows out his other knee before reaching the ring. Lawler will then grab a mic and tell the crowd that it wasn't a blown knee, but a blown quad due to steroid use. Book it.
  21. Wow my opinion of Takano sure has changed. Like most, I was really underwhelmed by the Cobra matches on the NJPW 80s set. Then I had the Takano/Super Strong Machine vs. Saito/Choshu tag from '89 at #5 on my Ballot. Here, while the Tenryu-Choshu exchanges are the draw, Takano steals the show. Stock going up = George Takano as a Heavyweight. I was a little blown away by this as it went on and this is Top 5 of the year for me so far.
  22. Damn it. I may be starting the wrong kind of rep around here. Haha.
  23. After re-watching the 3 '94 matches I'm inclined to agree. I hated the Bash at the Beach match at the time that it happened, but in hindsight I realize that's just because of personal reasons. I was so pissed that Hogan was coming in and changing the territory so dramatically to all of the things that i didn't like about WWF. So, I had a bit of a passionate negative attitude toward that match. Re-watching it I acknowledge that it's good. The Havoc match, on the other hand, I had a more positive attachment to. I still hated that Hogan won, but I was so sure that was going to happen going in and was used to Hogan being there and burying Flair for a few months by then. Plus, I had a pretty positive memory attached to Flair. I'll be honest, I threw one to Sherri thanks to that garter belt/stockings gimmick. Hey, if Lars Fredericksen will admit to enjoying himself while watching Baby Doll, I'll admit to this. And I don't even think Sherri is special in that manor. Just loved that outfit.
