Sean Wheelock was great. I'd heard him on one of Bix's podcasts previously and at that point had no idea he was so interested in wrestling, just associated him as being an MMA commentator. As a Brit I also found it amusing, in a childish way, that he didn't know what the word 'tackle' also refers to over here when he was doing the Superbowl radio commentary.

I doubt anyone cuts better and funnier local promos than Cornette. Just gives him an excuse to cut loose with a tirade and a bunch of insults against the locals. I could watch these all day.

[1992-10-24-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Not sure what airs on the Yearbook, but the TV show is built around Robert Gibson not being there as he had been to visit his mother in the hospital after surgery. Throughout the episode we get updates that he is on his way back and hopefully should be here later on. Eventually with the show getting late, Morton says it doesn't appear he will make it back in time and asks them to postpone the match until next week. Cornette and the Bodies show up with Cornette clucking like a chicken and then saying how Gibson is getting even with him for what he did to him in the past. He calls Morton a loser and says that he has no friends or family and that the only person who speaks to him is his father Paul Morton, and the only reason he does is because he is drunk all the time and doesn't know who he is. Morton slaps him and tells him that you don't talk about his family and that they are going to get that fight and he heads to the ring followed by the Bodies. The match itself is very good with Morton dominating early until he gets bumped out of the ring. Prichard posts him and he blades, then the Bodies go to work on him for the rest of the match with Cornette telling them to 'punish' him. Eventually Robert Gibson in street clothes rushes to the ring to aid his partner. Cornette and Killer Kyle both get involved to help the Bodies and they turn their attention to Gibson attempting to injure his hand. This was a real good match, a solid post match and a tremendous one man performance from Morton all the way throughout the show. Imagine if this had been done the other way round and it was Gibson cutting the promos (mumbling over his words) and wrestling the handicap match against the Bodies? No, me neither. Morton really did make Gibson so much more interesting once he arrived in SMW.- 9 replies

Smothers says that for the past two and a half years he's competed in WCW and we all know for the past year and a half which side of the fence he's sat on. When he first came in to WCW he was one half of the Wild Eyed Southern Boys and signed a contract for money than he had ever seen in his life. Things were going great, but after about a year the corporate people approached them and said we don't really want the redneck country boy style and we would like you to change your name and brighten up your outfit. It was as if they didn't like that we were from the South and represented the South, they even wanted to change where we were from to Cheyenne, WY. We did that and changed out name to the Young Pistols, they then started to send us to these towns up North but they just didn't take to us. Then we would come back down South and they couldn't understand why they were calling us the Young Pistols and that we weren't the Wild Eyed Southern Boys, they felt we'd abandoned them. We soon started to get these bad vibes off folk and eventually began hollering back at them, we forgot where we came from and changed everything about us. One day Bullet Bob Armstrong called him up and said you're like a fifth son to me but you're heading down the wrong road, everything might look good now, but when that changes see how many people you've got standing by you. Well now he's on his own and started to see that he wasn't being true to himself, his family or his friends so he left that situation as no amount of money in the world was worth it. Now he's in SMW and is going to do the best to show everyone that he wasn't raised to be the type of person you've seen for the past year and a half. Good interview and I like the continuity in how they are trying to explain why he was a heel in WCW, as opposed to just bringing him into SMW as a top face. Felt it dragged slightly and he could have probably cut some of the interview out, but all in all good stuff.

Ron Wright is in such a weakened condition that he barely talk! Tim Horner hit him with beer bottles and they've told him he'll probably lose his sight and he'll be out here in his wheelchair trying to manage wearing dark glasses cause he's blind! 'Can you imagine a poor, old, broken down man like me, can't even walk, having to be rolled up to ringside and going blind?' It breaks his heart , he's said lots of prayers, asked for help and been to the smartest doctor in the world and he just doesn't know if anything can be done as that glass got in his cataract implants! Horner has come out and attacked him numerous times because he hasn't got the guts to get on the champ, so he picks on poor, crippled Mr Wright. The Dirty White Boy wipes a tear from his eye and tells Horner what kind of man is he? All he's doing is trying to do is make enough money to get Mr Wright out of his wheelchair, but every time Horner gets in his way. Everyone says he's a good down to earth man, but how can he be when he keeps attacking a crippled man? He tells Horner to pick on him instead, he isn't hard to find, just come down and step in his face, but implores him to leave Ron Wright alone. Bob Caudle says that he didn't see it like that, but Wright claims they edited the video of Horner threatening to kill him. Anthony then says that he has an announcement to make, but wants to make it in the ring and heads over to it. He says for weeks Horner has been begging him for a SMW title shot, well if he was here now he’d give him one, but he’s probably not got enough guts and is sat at home, at which point Horner makes his way to ringside (flanked by Bob Armstrong). Dirty White Boy is all shocked and starts telling Wright ‘you said Horner wasn’t going to be here?’ Anthony starts goading him, but Horner is under doctor’s orders not to do anything as he has a concussion, and whilst he wants to get in the ring to get him, Armstrong holds him back. Dirty White Boy returns to the interview position and says that Horner is crazy, he’s got a concussion and the best thing he can do is to stay out his way. Horner eventually breaks free from Armstrong and goes straight after Anthony, beating on him and they fight around the arena until the show goes off the air. This was just a superb segment. Poor old, pitiful Ron Wright, then the Dirty White more than holding his own and playing his part, even Tim Horner was great. I’m sure it won’t last when he is back in the ring, but the angles at least, are making me get behind Horner for a bit. Anthony’s facials and shock when Horner comes down to ringside with him thinking he wasn’t there were tremendous.

[1992-10-17-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express and Mama Cornette
GSR replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Ricky Morton says that throughout the history of the Rock & Roll Express and the Midnight Express and now the Heavenly Bodies, it's always been Mama Cornette putting the money up. He got to thinking, who is she as he's never see her. Well, he just found out that she has recently got her picture taken by a famous photographer and he went down to his office and got a copy of it. Later on today he's going to show the whole world who Mama Cornette really is. On Down and Dirty Cornette says that he heard the Rock & Roll Express come out and say that they've got a picture of his mother. Well it's not true and it's not legal, you can't just possess a picture of somebody and show it on TV! He tells the Rock & Rolls that they've got nothing of his mother as she's a fine woman and wouldn't allow them to have a picture of her! Ricky unveils the photo of Mama Cornette and it's a picture of a dog wearing a wig, glasses and a dress. The Rock & Roll Express leave the photo with Bob Caudle and then the Heavenly Bodies, Jim Cornette and Killer Kyle rush out and start to tear up the photo. Cornette says that his mother is not a dog and tells the Rock & Rolls to get back out and they'll fight them right now. Stanfield is not happy as they clearly have no respect if they can do that to a man's mother, whilst Dr Tom says she's the sweetest old lady he's ever met in his life and tells them to get back out here. Bob Armstrong comes out and says how he guesses that they want a match with the Rock & Roll Express? Well they can have it one condition, and that is that it's for the tag team titles. Cornette is fine with that, the Bodies not so much and an argument erupts between them. They say what about the injunction, but he tells them they've humiliated him and his mother ('they called her a female dog!'), that they're the best tag team in the business, that's what he pays them for and it's their job to beat the Rock & Roll Express up. Cornette doesn't care about the injunction and signs the contract, much to Armstrong's pleasure. Well I was expecting Mama Cornette to be James E. in drag so at least we were spared that! Cornette is the saving grace in this whole angle, although after everything he went through in order to get the injunction and to stop the Rock & Roll Express get another title match, this was a pretty weak premise to go back on that and give them one.- 10 replies

Ron Wright and Dirty White Boy explain that they were having a celebration last week over his life being spared after Tim Horner tried to kill him! Wright says how Horner came out, grabbed the beer bottle, swung it at the Dirty White Boy and hit him in the head. Some of the glass ended up getting in his eyes where he had cataract surgery and now he's probably going to lose his sight and he'll be a blind manager out here! He's already crippled and in a wheelchair, and now will be blind too and it's all down to Horner. Bob Caudle says that he didn't see it that way, when Anthony tells him if Horner gets in the ring with him he'll finish the job he should've started a long time ago, and is going to take $2,500 out on him because Ron Wright could've really used that money. Wright really is some piece of work! Bob Caudle tells the Rock & Roll Express that they were blindsided by Jim Cornette last week coming out with that surprise injunction, and that they can no longer wrestle the Heavenly Bodies for the tag team titles. Morton says that if Cornette likes surprises, they've got one of their own for him next week.

Bob Armstrong is fining the Dirty White Boy $2,500, he would fine him more, but that's all he can do on his own until he goes before the Board of Directors. He says that he was calling Tim Horner a coward, but that's the most cowardly thing he has seen in his life. Jim Cornette comes out to confront Armstrong and tell him that his mother has a crack staff of attorneys and they have been working on something for him. He says how they gave the Rock & Roll Express their chance at the tag titles and they blew it. He then hands him an injunction which states that Bob Armstrong cannot sign a title match between the Heavenly Bodies and the Rock & Roll Express as long as there are other teams that deserve a chance that have not yet had an opportunity, like Dixie Dy-No-Mite & Danny Davis and Pat Rose & Joe Cazana. Armstrong says that Smoky Mountain Wrestling have lawyers of their own and he's going to do some research on this.

Down and Dirty opens with a recap of the angle from last week and we then go to a Horner interview. He has a bruised neck from the attack and says that he was confronting Ron Wright as he was promised a title match if he beat the Dirty White Boy and went out to get that match. At which point he was jumped from behind, handcuffed like a common criminal, had a noose put round his neck and was hung out to dry. He says that the Commissioner has promised him as many title matches as he wants and now it's time to get even, he's going to pull Dirty White Boy's neck like he did his and when it's over he just might be the SMW champion too. Back on Down and Dirty and Dutch asks them what happened last week? Wright says that Horner came out in a rage, he said that he was going to kill him and that there would be nothing left! They accused the SMW people of cutting that part out of the video and it was just lucky that the Dirty White Boy was able to get out and save his life! Anthony says that when he saw Horner come out and jump on this poor, crippled old man he just snapped and tells Horner that he was lucky he didn't beat him any more than he did. He starts bad mouthing Horner some more (thinking he is at home) when he rushes the set and clocks the Dirty White Boy. Wright wheels himself over to Horner and starts pulling at his trousers trying to get him to stop the attack, Horner then turns his attention to Wright who backs off and says how he's got glasses on and he can't hit a man in glasses! Anthony then breaks a beer bottle over his head, busting him open in the process. The Dirty White Boy and Wright leave whilst Horner's wife comes out to check on her husband and they go to a break. I felt that Horner's initial promo was lacking in passion, but the studio segment was great. I'm so waiting for the day that someone finally loses it with Wright and just nails him, he's that good. Just a wonderful character who is my favourite discovery since starting on this SMW project. Probably not as effective as the hanging, but two weeks in a row where Horner has been left bloodied by them and they're certainly giving it their all to try and get him over as one of the top faces in the company.

Paul Orndorff got to him, attacked him from behind, choked him with his towel and he kicked his butt! It's not the first time Ronnie Garvin got beat but he always comes back, he's like an elephant in that he never forgets. He goes to sleep at night thinking about him, not thinking about making love or kissing him (huh?), but thinking about putting him out of wrestling and teaching him a lesson. When he put his hands on his personal property he fooled with the wrong man and it's going to come his way very soon. I think there were a few sniggers from the audience, so Garvin had to explain that goes to sleep at night thinking about him comment just in case they thought he meant something else!

Down and Dirty opens with clips of last week's Rock & Roll Express vs Heavenly Bodies match and Robert Fuller would like to clear the air about what happened. They got drawn up in all the action and that bought them down to ringside to get a better vantage point of what was going on. As Robert Gibson came into the ropes he clumsily tumbled over them and nearly fell on to Jimmy and he, and if they hadn't been there he may well have hit someone in the audience. When were helping him back in the ring they noticed that his eyes were all glazed and at this point goes on to talk about the real rock & rollers, God fearing men like Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson, personal friends of his who never touched a drug in their life. Now you have Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith and all you have are the drugs and the drinking, things you never see good God fearing men like Jimmy and he doing. He tells the Rock & Roll Express to dose themselves up and stick needles in their arteries cause they'll need it when they take the ride on the stretcher. Bob Caudle thought that Ron Wright was having a heart attack last week when Tim Horner defeated the Dirty White Boy. Wright says how Horner has hounded him more than any bill collector, has been calling him 24 hours a day and sending the police out because he wants a title shot. He claims that he never promised him a title shot and now he is out there lying through his teeth accusing him of promising him to give him one if Anthony got beat. He tells Caudle that the gentleman Ron Wright would never go back on his word, he's just down and out on his luck trying to raise enough money to get to the hospital to have his hip implant and open heart surgery! At this point Horner comes out and Wright's voice and demeanour change instantly and he goes back to clutching his chest. Horner says that they told him if he beat them he'd get a title shot and asks where his contract is. Wright claims to have arthritis in his shoulder and arm so bad that he couldn't even sign it, but has watched the tape back and states that he never promised him a title match. He they starts accusing him of lying though his teeth, calling him yellow and can't say what he would like to him as he would probably be arrested! Horner starts back at Wright when Anthony appears and nails him in the back with a chair. He then handcuffs him with his arms behind his back and Wright gives him a noose which he puts round Horner's neck, before dragging him to the ring and hanging him from the top rope. Robbie Eagle, Ben Jordan and Newton Steffey all try to help, but the Dirty White Boy beats them all down. Horner bleeds from the mouth and does a pretty spectacular sell job with his facials, whilst Anthony lifts his legs up off the floor to aid in the hanging. The Rock & Roll Express, Dixie Dy-No-Mite and Danny Davis eventually make the save, stopping the attack and saving Horner from any further punishment. The Stud Stable interview (or should I see the Robert Fuller promo) was great and all kinds of WTF! He has such wonderful delivery and the subject matter was something else, saying that all Rock & Rollers these days are drunks and druggies and telling the Express to stick needles in their arteries! The Horner angle was very heavy. Ron Wright, as ever, is absolute gold in everything he does and the way he completely changes when Horner came out to confront him was hilarious. The angle was very reminiscent of the one with Dr Tom in Continental and Horner was superb with his selling of the hanging. They're going to some serious effort to try and make Horner seem a legitimate threat and top contender.

[1992-09-19-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
The Rock & Rolls illicit such a reaction from the crowd with everything they do and Prichard and Morton work so well together. I enjoyed the Rock & Rolls exchanging position on the armbar, coming in the ring without making the tag, making the clap sound and Cornette's reaction to this 'cheating', whilst Prichard can't half sell a punch. After Killer Kyle has been ejected from ringside the Stud Stable come down and when Prichard whips Robert Gibson into the ropes, they pull the top one down and he goes flying over the top of it to the floor. They roll him back into the ring and the Doctor covers him for the fall. A very good TV match which furthers the Rock & Roll/Stud Stable feud and we get a precursor of things to come. The actual quality of the televised matches (especially the main events) have improved greatly in the past month.- 9 replies

This stalker appears before Molokai (whose first appearance is alongside the Night Stalker when they bring out the tombstone with Brian Lee's name on). He only appeared on two TV episodes (attacking Paul Lee on one, before Lee comes out after him), but is never named.
-
Nice. I've recently started watching the TV (am up to October '92) so looking forward to seeing how your opinions compare to my own. There will be fierce competition for Interview of the Week, whereas Dutch has some blinding lines.
-
I've recently found this thread and thought it would be the best place to ask. I recently started on attempting to watch the complete SMW TV run and am up to 'The Master' angle. Does anyone know who the third stalker that attacks Brian Lee is? First one is the Mongolian Mauler, second is the Night Stalker, whilst the third is a fat, almost Samoan looking guy. Anyone have a name for him as I don't recognise him at all.
-
I've asked OJ about Clay Thomson in the past and sadly only five matches of his are on tape, with a further two when he was working as the Exorcist. I've only seen the Alan Sarjeant, Reg Trood and Majid Ackra bouts and enjoyed them all (with the first two being especially good). It's a shame as like Sarjeant (who has a similar number of small matches on tape) he appears to be one of the lost great workers.

[1992-09-19-SMW-TV] Down and Dirty: Jim Cornette & Killer Kyle
GSR replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Dutch welcomes Cornette to his show, the crowd booed and he says how they love him! His ratings dropped with Bob Armstrong and Brian Lee on last week's show, so he's glad to have him on today. Cornette says how Killer Kyle is going to collect the bounty on Lee's head and then turns his attentions to Bob Armstrong. He's been sticking his nose in his business again. It wasn't enough that he cost the Heavenly Bodies the titles once, now in a rematch he's handcuffing himself to him at ringside, well you'll find out why they call him Houdini Cornette! He then tells the Rock & Roll Express that today, when they silence the critics and defend their belts against them, once they emerge unsuccessful from their one chance at the title, they will never see the belts or his men again. Can't imagine that there is anyone better than Cornette at what he just did, running down three different angles and hitting all the main points in one segment. I'm not sold on Killer Kyle at the moment. I know that Ray Traylor was a jobber in the NWA before becoming Big Bubba and Cornette is clearly trying to position Kyle as this era's Bubba (right down to the no sold chair shot), but it's just not working. Doesn't help that Kyle is incredibly boring and I guess we're supposed to forget he worked as enhancement in the very first show putting over Robert Gibson.- 10 replies

Horner finally gets his match against the Dirty White Boy but it's a non-title affair. Horner dominates early, shows great fire and that he can more than hold his own against the champ. Anthony gets the advantage and Horner small packages him for the pin (and no doubt a subsequent title match down the road). Ron Wright falls out of his wheel chair in shock and was sprawling on the floor in a moment which had me in hysterics. Solid little match, not long enough really to go any more on it, but the best Horner has looked so far, especially with his offense.

A house show match from Kingsport, TN is set, but before it can get going Orndorff jumps Garvin, snatches his towel and tears it in two. He then ties the towel round Garvin's neck, hangs him from the top rope by it and proceeds to beat on him until Danny Davis comes out to cut him free with a knife. Garvin cuts an interview and says that Orndorff went too far taking his towel, tearing it in two and using it to choke him with. The towel is like a ring jacket to him, he hands it to a fan every night and by doing what he did he deprived a fan of it. Orndorff has made it personal and he's going to take something of his and make him cry and beg! Orndorff starts by talking about the bounty on Brian Lee's head and says he has nothing to do with it, but will face him next week, stick him in the ring and then collect the $10,000. He then says how he is sick and tired of Ron Garvin, that he's starting to get under his skin and will stick it to him too! I thought the angle (despite it being over a towel) was great. Orndorff is so intense in everything he does and has been superb ever since the heel turn. This feud has been much better than I ever could've imagined in every aspect.

[1992-09-12-SMW-TV] Interview: The Fantastics / Interview: Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
The Fantastics claim that once again the Bodies cheated them and took their tag team belts. Bobby Fulton says when he woke up he could still smell whatever was on that rag and the smell lasted for a couple of day, but the hatred he has for Cornette and the Bodies remains. He feels they were robbed, but there is nothing Commissioner Armstrong can do because it was a no DQ match. They've a return title shot upcoming where they'll prove they can beat the Bodies again, however this time Cornette will be handcuffed to Bob Armstrong at ringside. After 13 years in the sport Stanfield Lane has sustained his fair share of injuries, but none were ever of the magnitude of the one he received at the hands of the Fantastics. He suffered a perforated eardrum, has to now wear protective headgear and wants everyone to keep the noise down! Tom Prichard is getting sick and tired of all these fat, disgusting women trying to rip their clothes and get to them every chance they get. 'We don't associate with any woman in the Smoky Mountain area, we get our women flown in!'. Cornette states that Bob Armstrong may be used to being in handcuffs but he's not, he's never spent a day in jail and this just goes to show he's out to see his men lose the belts again like last time. He goes on to say that Killer Kyle is going after the $10,000 bounty on Brian Lee, whilst people have been coming up to him saying that you're not true champions until you beat the Rock & Roll Express. He's going to rectify this and has asked for a match against them on TV next week and when they beat them, they'll never get another title shot as we'll have proved we're true champions. Cornette is great on the mic here and the Bodies get superb heat. Not sure what will happen next week, but something just niggles that they're rushing the first match between the teams, especially when the Bodies have at least one match left against the Fantastics and there is no sign of the Rock & Roll/Stud Stable feud ending just yet. Maybe both will get involved next week, we'll see.- 9 replies

[1992-09-05-SMW-TV] Down and Dirty: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
Dutch opens by thanking Cornette for coming on to his programme and from keeping the Fantastics off it and killing his ratings! Cornette is a little choked up he is so happy, but what the people don't realise is that the referees were knocked out and as a result there was no official to keep an eye on things and make sure none of the participants in the match suffer a serious injury. He saw an old wound on Bobby's head begin to open up, so pulled out his first aid kit, sprayed disinfectant on a cloth and then went in to wipe the wound and make sure that he wasn't hurt that bad that he couldn't continue. After cleaning the wound he was fine, but then he passed out almost straightaway. Maybe he has a drinking problem? Maybe he was bitten by a tse tse fly? But either way the Heavenly Bodies are the new tag team champions. Stanfield says how he smelled liquor on Fulton, so no more Fantastics and from now on it's the Rock & Roll Express. They've beaten them so many times in the past that it will be like taking candy from a baby! Cornette then pours the $20,000 over him and is almost bathing in it in the ring. Great segment to end the Fantastics feud and set the wheels in motion for the Rock & Roll Express. Cornette in the money at the end was all kinds of awesome.- 9 replies

Pete always seems to cover the points that I mention when writing my notes, but without question the best match on SMW TV so far. My only complaint was there being the two ref bumps in the match, as I thought it was unnecessary and there was really no need to for Curtis to get involved (especially as his, similar to Lee vs Orndorff at Volunteer Slam, is again ridiculously contrived). They could have easily carried on the match do the same ether rag finish with the first referee still being out and KO'ed on the arena floor. A funny line at the end with Bob Caudle convinced that Cornette knocked Bobby Fulton out with something, whilst Dutch just thinks he's a heavy drinker, was drunk before he went out and ended up passing out in the match!
