A sit down interview with Brian Lee and he's got himself a partner to face the Dirty White Boy and Paul Orndorff at Summerblast '92, and it's Ron Garvin. Lee called him and asked him to help, he's just turned 41 and is in the best shape of his life. He was the 'one man gang' at one time and is 'the hands of stone' and if you think you've done something in wrestling, you haven't done anything like Ron Garvin. Promo was so so, but it got me excited to see the tag match between the two teams, so in that case, job done. Garvin was another wrestler who I had no idea worked in SMW.

Watching the TV set as opposed to the yearbook, I'm not sure which of the two Bodies and Cornette interviews from the episode this is relating to. My guess is the first one (as opposed to the one post match after defeating Tim Horner and Robert Gibson), and the only notes I made were them talking about how they didn't win these tag belts by being nice guys. So yeah.

This is scheduled as Brian Lee vs Rip Rogers, but just as the match is about to start Ron Wright and Tony Anthony come to ringside and offer Rogers $2,000 to let Anthony take his place. Before he leaves he attacks Lee and when Prime Time has the upper hand, it enables Anthony to jump him from behind and the match gets underway. Wright passes Anthony some knux which he uses on Lee opening him up, before hiding them in his tights. Hector Guerrero comes to ringside and gets up on the apron trying to tell the referee what happened. Anthony goes over to him, Lee pulls the knux out of Anthony's tights, hits him with them, but the referee spots this and DQ's him. Anthony is busted open and Lee continues to beat on him after the match, when Paul Orndorff, carrying a briefcase, comes to his aid and nails Lee with it. Guerrero tries to help but Anthony ties him up by his tie and then hangs him over the top rope by it. Scott Sandlin runs out but ends up on the receiving end of an awesome Orndorff piledriver. Ben Jordan soon follows but he gets hit with Anthony's finisher for his trouble. The two of them continue the attack on Lee and the show goes off the air just as Tim Horner, Dixie Dy-No-Mite and Robert Gibson hit the ring. Great post match action and I really could watch Orndorff dishing out piledrivers all day. Not sure how long he stays around before heading to WCW, but I hope it's for a while yet. Another guy who I have really had my eyes opened too while watching this TV set.

Cornette says that all the women are drooling and they're liable to be electrocuted because they've been starved of real men for so long. Stanfield says that he and Prichard have made calls to Sprint and AT & T and had their telephone numbers changed because the Fantastics girlfriends are calling them night and day begging them. He knows that Jackie is a cripple, Bobby is impotent and that they haven't seen real men in a long time, but he implores them to stop ringing them, to call the 1-900 numbers instead and to leave the Heavenly Bodies alone. Tom says it wouldn't be so bad of the Fantasticss had a couple of good looking girls, but they remind him of all the disgusting, stinking, sweat hog pigs he sees here in the audience tonight. I burst out laughing when Lane came out with the 'Bobby is impotent' line and he still comes over as though he is having to lower himself by wrestling in front of the SMW hillbillies. Another good, funny promo.

Debut episode of Down and Dirty with Dutch Mantel and his first guest is Barry Horowitz. Dutch says that Barry has a lot of ability, talent, drive and ambition (unlike that goof Carl Styles who he had previously), and whilst he tried to make something out of Styles, he now wants to make something out of Horowitz. Dutch has researched his won/loss record and it's currently 0-43. Barry didn't realise it was that many, he though it was just 25 or 26, but Dutch says that record will change as he's going to give him the knowledge, wisdom, know how and skills to be a champion in SMW. This didn't appear to go anywhere as whilst Horowitz is shadowing Dutch in the next episode, the one after (which is a new set of tapings), Barry is not to be seen and there is no mention of him (at least when Carl Styles was in this position they would explain his absence on TV). Despite only being a jobber in SMW, you get a solid idea of what a real good worker he was. The squash matches were far more even (and Horowitz would often take most of the match), were always enjoyable and from his brief forays on the mic he could also talk. Not that he was this great lost talker, but he was certainly better than the likes of Lee, Horner, Gibson etc.

Landell claims that Horner got real lucky when he beat him as he had a 115 degree temperature, had already worked the Mayhem Rumble and had worked about 90 times that night! Horner is just angry about the $5,000 as he's never had $5,000 before in his life and he's lucky he's not here now, as if he was he would slap the taste right out of his mouth. Horner then appears from nowhere, drills Landell and they fight around the arena and out the door. There's a nice touch where we lose sound and a message appears on screen saying 'Do not adjust your TV set. The wrestlers have caused an audio problem'. Another great Landell interview and whilst the match quality isn't there yet, I can't imagine there is a promotion with a better array of talkers than SMW at this time in 1992.

A telephone interview from Bobby Fulton (who is a really underrated talker) says that Jackie has cartilage damage and a partial ligament tear from the attack by the Heavenly Bodies, and whilst the doctors have recommended he waits longer to recuperate, they are coming back gunning for Cornette and the Bodies. Cornette then reiterates that Jackie is defying doctors orders to get back in the ring with them and then starts to wonder what will happen if they reinjure the knee and he is never able to wrestle again? He may do what these welfare cases and rednecks do and that's live off successful people like himself and the Heavenly Bodies. He goes on to say that the Fulton's are too proud for that so he has a present for them, a sign saying 'I will work for food' that they can hang around their necks when they stand on street corners as they'll no longer be able to wrestle as the Bodies will have crippled them. I was wondering what Stanfield had done to his hair and couldn't believe that he has opted for a toupee (and probably the most ill fitting and unconvincing toupee he could find). Straight forward interview from Cornette and the Fantastics are the best faces in the company at this point. Looking forward to seeing them try and get retribution on the Bodies when Jackie returns.

Wright has never been so mad and disgusted! His heart is bothering him a little so he's going to try and not get too excited, but he's never seen anyone get robbed like the Dirty White Boy did at the Volunteer Slam; they gave him a three count and it shouldn't have even been a one count! It led to his heart acting up and he had a stroke. He is now filing a complaint and grievance for compensation against SMW for having an employee of theirs (the referee) rob he and his man and cause him to have this stroke which will probably keep him in this wheel chair for another year. Dirty White Boy says that Wright doesn't lie and starts to lay into Lee, who then appears in the ring and challenges Anthony to face him for the title now. Wright says that he doesn't think his heart could take seeing Anthony whip Lee right now and that he couldn't stand the excitement of the Dirty White Boy annihilating him! Anthony then says that he has to take care of his manager and that's the only thing that is saving Lee. More absolute gold from Wright and Anthony has been a revelation so far.

Short, nothing match (Budro was without his kneepads) although Landell gets some nice heat from the crowd with his cheating. Horner gets the pin but Landell attacks him after the match, including blading (although only a trickle) from a post shot as they continue to try and push and get Horner over. Landell rips up the cheque and stuffs it down Horner's mouth before Brian Lee, Dixie Dy-No-Mite and Danny Davis put a stop to things and run off Landell. Agree with the comments about Dutch Mantel on commentary who has been nothing short of awesome on colour in the first four months I've watched. SMW has some fantastic heels but it's clear they are dying for a top babyface as although Lee tries he's just not there (and the Volunteer Slam booking didn't help one bit) and don't get me started on Horner.

The Mountain Mayhem Battle Royal was SMW's take on the Royal Rumble, but had all the participants sat at ringside (instead of coming from the back) entering at two minute intervals depending on when their number was drawn. There were 17 participants and the entire match went about 40 minutes, neither Bodies were eliminated legally (got to protect those top stars), whilst the final seven eliminations occurred in a ridiculous 80 seconds! Landell is eliminated, but the referees are distracted by the previously eliminated Dirty White Boy who is trying to help eliminate Brian Lee. Landell gets back in the ring, throws Horner over the top rope and is awarded the $5,000. After the match Horner goes to Armstrong and says everyone saw him eliminate Landell, that he's got $5,000 of his money and wants to know what he's going to do about it. Armstrong says he sympathises but the referee's decision is final and instant replay has never worked in any sport, however he is ordering Landell to bring the cheque with him next week for a rematch with the money on the line. Landell says that Armstrong must be punch drunk and awfully crazy if he thinks he's going to put up $5,000. He's already beaten Horner fair and square so why does he have to put up the money? What's it to him? It's only another loss in his career, it's not like nothing new is happening? Landell saves this segment and is an incredibly funny and creative promo, Horner, well is Horner.

Lee had defeated Tony Anthony in the semi finals of the tournament and had bled fairly profusely during the match. The introductions are being made for the final and Bob Armstrong is in the ring with Paul Orndorff. Armstrong says that Lee lost a lot of blood, has a shoulder injury and as a result has no other alternative but to award the belt to Orndorff. Lee comes out all bandaged up, carrying his shoulder and says that he's come too far to let some doctor tell him he can't win the belt. The action is okay and Lee works hard, but the finish is something else. Referee Mark Curtis get KO'ed from a very contrived Orndorff elbow and then Bob Armstrong gets in the ring to try an revive him. Behind his back the Dirty White Boy comes out and throws some knux to Orndorff. He ends up trying to punch Lee with them but he blocks it, they start fighting over the knux, Armstrong turns round sees them on Orndorff's fist and DQ's him awarding the belt to Lee. Anthony and Orndorff attack Lee after the match at which point Armstrong gets physically involved, dropping Anthony and then Buddy Landell and Barry Horowitz who both come out for some reason. The locker room empties to try and separate everyone. In the dressing room Orndorff says that there has been a conspiracy against him ever since he arrived, and next time Bob Armstrong sticks his nose in his business he's going to piledrive him as he's sick and tired of all this. So SMW awarded their first Heavyweight championship on a DQ finish. When I saw Lee come out I was expecting Orndorff to take the whole match and Lee to get almost a 'fluke' roll up win, but what we got was far worst. Despite coming out for the match all beaten up, the finish made Lee look weak and no idea what they were doing having Armstrong playing Superman against everyone. At least Orndorff's post match interview was great, but this was one terrible ending. If Pete's guess was correct and Orndorff didn't want to job, just DQ him against Horner in the first round and let someone else do the clean finish in the final. Completely ass backwards booking.

Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
GSR replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
But you can't (allegedly) get into the WON HoF on work alone. And it's still entirely possible to judge draws. What else did Benoit get in on then? -
Whether it's The Maulers or The Fantastics it doesn't matter, because come the Volunteer Slam in Knoxville, they're walking out the champions. Prichard is in full on Piper mode here.

[1992-04-25-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies

Not much to add for this one, just that Stanfield hates the pukehole that is Beckley, WV! Fun little promo for an upcoming house show.- 14 replies

[1992-04-18-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
The interview opens with a video interview from Danny Davis & Joey Maggs who say that no-one gave them a chance against the Koloffs, but look what happened? No-one may give them a chance against the Heavenly Bodies, but you never know and they may just come out on top again? Maggs continues to sell the neck from the Orndorff angle the previous week (shame Reno Riggins didn't follow his lead). Cornette warns Maggs that his neck will hurt even more when they get through with him. Stanfield then wants to talk about something that is of upmost importance to him; not the tag team tournament, not wrestling rankings, but sexual harassment. These poor, fat, deprived, corn fed women have been groping and pawing the Bodies ever since they came to SMW and 's sick of it. He's going to notify the authorities and has already talked to Commissioner Armstrong to put a stop to it. Tells everyone to keep their nasty, greasy, sweaty, fat palms off them or they're going to have something done about it. Cornette then says that they'll press charges and after they've won the belts at the Volunteer Slam they'll have new ones made as the originals don't look good enough for them! First time I've ever heard Lane referred to as Stanfield and he was great cutting this serious promo, almost pissed that he's having to lower himself by wrestling in all these dirty towns in front of the hillbilly locals. -
Another great episode and Mike was a superb guest. As always incredibly informative and so much stuff that I never knew about (I'm off to google Ryuma Go for starters, then see if I can find any of that Jimmy Suzuki footage on YouTube). Nice to hear a bit of talk about Mal Kirk and the Disco Ladder match, whilst I'm struggling to decide which of Bix's two impressions was the worst (they were both pretty bad!). Roll on episode six.

The Gangsta of Love and The Doctor of Desire finally debut as the Heavenly Bodies! Cornette when doing his introduction states that he's previously managed the best tag team in the USA but that wasn't enough. He then got himself the best tag team in the world, but that also wasn't enough, so now he has got himself the best tag team in the universe. Good match and effective debut for the Bodies, who demonstrated some nice double team manoeuvres and garnered heat from the crowd straight off. Battens also looked good in this match, but the whole presentation and build up has made the Bodies be something special already.

Bob Caudle is interviewing Hector Guerrero, Dixie Dy-No-Mite and Paul Orndorff and whilst Guerrero and Dy-No-Mite both consider it an honour and are happy to be wildcard entrants for the SMW tournament, Orndorff isn't so and considers it an insult. He's been all over the world, sold out buildings from the US to Japan, beaten Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and everybody who is anybody in professional wrestling. Caudle then says that that's the point, he's been wrestling all over the world and hasn't wrestled enough in SMW to be seeded, but Orndorff doesn't see it that way and says that he could beat these guys (Guerrero and Dy-No-Mite) even at the same time. Guerrero tries to placate him but it just leads to a pushing contest with Dixie getting between them. Caudle suggests settling it in the ring and Orndorff responds by saying he'll settle it however he wants and is sick of all this garbage, Bob Armstrong wont let him use the piledriver whilst everyone else can use whatever they want? He's afraid he may hurt someone? Well you're dead right I'm going to hurt someone. After Guerrero claims 'talk is cheap' they head to the ring for the match. The match isn't anything special with Orndorff rolling through on a Guerrero crossbody and hooking the trunks for the pin. Guerrero tries to argue the decision but Orndorff then drills him with a left followed by a piledriver. Ben Jordan, Reno Riggins and then Joey Maggs all come out successively, but all receive the same piledriver treatment. Orndorff brings a chair into the ring and piledrives Guerrero on to it, before Dy-No-Mite comes out and Orndorff finally leaves. The set up for this match was superb with Orndorff showing some real intensity in his promo, whilst the piledrivers he delivers are a thing of beauty. Agree with the comments that this is all more angle than match, but it was bloody tremendous and Orndorff was exceptional in everything here.

Cornette has had a lot of problems again this week! Rainey is outside one of Knoxville's finest hotels when Cornette appears and tells him to keep his voice down and hide the camera as he doesn't want anything to go wrong this time. He tells him to follow him and hopes that he hasn't blabbed again, whilst he can only stay a minute as the guys are training, always working and never relaxing. Cornette opens the door of the room in which they are 'training' only to be met with women's voices asking who he is, throwing their underwear at him and telling him to get out of here. They shut the door on him and Cornette thinks Rainey has done it again. In the studio, Bob Caudle is starting to doubt whether he has a team at all, but Cornette assures us that next week his team will be here live as their tag team tournament match is scheduled. He is going to tell Commissioner Armstrong that he wants extra security, police and that these fat, ugly, corn fed women have seat belts on their chairs as he's afraid they'll drool on them, the TV equipment and we'll all be electrocuted! Ron Wright is fed up with these no good, lying, hillbilly rasslin' fans! He's given them several weeks to get their cheques in to him, even given them the address on TV for where to send their donations to and he's received nothing. Anthony tells him to calm down as on 5/15 it's the Volunteer Slam, the SMW Heavyweight tournament and the likes of Horner, Gibson and Brian Lee could never beat him. Lee comes out (and Wright makes a sharp exit out the way), says he could beat Anthony and hopes they get to face each other in the tournament. Wright then says that it's a good job Anthony is a good gentleman, otherwise he would've squashed him here in front of everyone! Good promo from Anthony and he hasn't been in the territory long but already looks like a tremendous addition. I know she turns up later at some point, but I do miss Kim!

Bob Caudle hopes we'll have better luck this week finding out about Cornette's mystery team. Phil Rainey is in a discrete location where Cornette has promised to reveal the identity of his new tag team. He shows up and tells Rainey to keep his voice down because they can't let anyone know what they're doing as any time these guys are seen in public it's complete chaos. He says that they should be here any minute and then a limo approaches in which Cornette declare, here are the greatest tag team in the universe, the next SMW tag team champions and that he's spent an arm and a leg to make sure that no-one knows they are here. As the limo stops a hoard of women show up from nowhere surrounding the car and it drives off. Cornette says that Rainey has blown it again and spilled the beans because he wants his men's cast offs. Claims that next week he'll take the cameras to the stars in a very private location as you can't bring stars to a hillbilly location like this and not expect it to cause trouble. Another funny segment heightening the anticipation of the debut of the Heavenly Bodies.

I thought the finish of The Wild Bunch vs Fantastics match hurt it, and prefered the previous weeks six-man where all three Fantastics faced the Wild Bunch and Jimmy Golden. A fairly short match though it was very good and could've been something special with a further ten minutes or so.

Nice to hear. I was looking at your list and was a bit taken a back that Breaks was the only WOS guy you had on the list and was thinking how could you have him and not some of the others? Grey especially should have a shot if you watch more of his matches (I had him above Breaks when I was actively watching stuff for this before deciding to drop out). Cortez also would've made it for me.

Bob Holly was driving down Sunset Boulevard with Julia Roberts by his side and she asked him if he was going to be in the SMW title tournament. He says that why should he have to beat three guys when he can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime, and all he has to do is wait around for the champion to be crowned and then he can go out an beat him and become the champion. Holly had featured pretty regularly in SMW up to this point and I think this brief promo was a way to explain why he wasn't in the tournament whilst everyone else is (including a couple of guys who haven't even appeared on TV yet in Dixie Dynamite and Scott Anthony). If this was the final appearance of Holly in SMW it's a shame as he showed an awful lot of promise in his squash matches, although he looked more like a member of the Hart Foundation with his pink and black outfit than someone who mixed with Hollywood A-listers.
