  1. An incredibly cheesy personality profile on 'one of the most popular stars in Smoky Mountain'. He's been an outstanding athlete all of his life, a four year defensive back All-American, a US Jr. champion, a co-holder of the National and UWF tag team titles and his biggest win was over Hawk on TBS. He's wrestled in the WWF and the NWA amongst others, is a voluntary probation officer and also an accomplished singer and musician. This then segues into Horner singing some country song. Christ, was this something! There clearly trying to give Horner a pretty substantial push but this does him no favours. Definitely falls into the category of so bad it's good!
  2. Cornette is in the back of a limo with some chap (BIll Rainey?) and he promises to introduce him to the greatest tag team in the universe. He's taking them to their training location where the next tag team champions are working out and planning strategy; their training location transpires to be a Hooters bar. Cornette gets the limo driver, called Herd (a lousy driver!), to pull over and tells the guy that they're going to have a quiet little interview as he's rented out the whole place so that they won't be disturbed. They go into the room to see a swarm of Hooters girls all crowded round his team and someone has clearly spilled the beans! Rainey says he can't see anyone, isn't risking going into that melee and they'll have to do the interview some other time. Back in the studio Cornette claims it's so long since the women in this part of the area have seen a real man that their hormones went South. He promises to try again next week in a special location that will be a little more private so all these women won't harass them anymore. Fun stuff.
  3. Had no idea that these two even worked in SMW and we get a highlight package of clips from All Japan (set to Steppenwolf's 'Born to be Wild') to prepare us for their arrival and appearance in the tag team tournament. Billy Black especially looks spectacular in these clips.
  4. I actually found this a pretty nothing TV match and Rogers was no where near aggressive enough considering he was pissed about Horner costing him $500 last week. The only time he even showed a slight bit of aggression was the attempted piledriver on the floor (with the piledriver being banned in Smoky Mountain), whilst I too felt Rogers bout against Orndorff on the second episode is better than this. Agree with the comments about the commentary team and Dutch has been fantastic in everything I've seen, and I had no idea how great he was on the stick (I'd put him behind only Cornette on what I've seen so far).
  5. Ron Wright has finally found someone to manage! This will make his trips to the hospital a success and he may even have to have open heart surgery, but the Dirty White Boy has made it all possible. Anthony can't believe that none of the wrestlers would step up and help such a great legend as Mr Wright, whilst Wright says he'll be up and out of this wheelchair in no time after the surgery.
  6. Rogers is still doing his free squats and Horner asks Bob Caudle how long he has left. Caudle turns round to check and Horner kicks the chair from Rogers who falls over. Caudle turns back round to see Rogers on the floor and says how the time was 59:30 but Rogers has failed in his attempt. Rip gets back up and continues to do more squats whilst Horner just leaves. Strange segment and I don't get how we are supposed to be supporting Horner in this as it was a total dick move to pull. Maybe someone else could have pulled it off better, but Horner really is terrible. I'm dreading to see more from him as I plough through my SMW sets.
  7. Mr 'stick his nose in every bodies business' Armstrong assaults a cripple and tells him it's not fair to have a mystery team in the tournament. Cornette says that if he revealed their identity every man in this part of the country would hang their head in shame, move out the area and it would created financial upheaval and socio and economic calamity! Whilst the tournament itself would be decimated as every wrestler would be diving out of it they'd be so scared. He does give us a couple of clues, saying that they're sexier than Madonna and more dangerous than dinner at Jeffrey Dahmer's!
  8. Bob Armstrong is having a problem with Ron Wright and shows a bunch of clips from previous weeks showing Wright interfering in the matches. He says that he has a manager's license so there is nothing he can do, but he has no right to come down to the ring when neither man is under contract to him. He therefore bans Wright from ringside unless he has a contract with someone. Ron then comes out and says that he can't believe he's trying to mistreat a poor, crippled old man and that he's one of the most upstanding, gentleman wrestlers ever who's never harmed anyone! Armstrong grabs the mic and says he's not buying that garbage as he's been around him for over 20 years, has seen him maim and cripple guys and even has a scar on his head from him. He's standing by his decision that unless he gets a contract with someone he's barred from ringside and while we're at it, he's barred from this too. Wright tries to argue and protest the decision, but Armstrong just wheels him off the set whilst Wright continues to remonstrate. Another hilarious interview section and everything involving Wright has been first class so far.
  9. Tim Horner is out for an interview and is almost immediately interrupted by Rogers. Rogers say that it's his interview time, that he's doing free squats for an hour and no-one wants to hear from a hillbilly like Horner. Horner then bets him $500 that he can't do the squats for the full hour. After seeing him cut a promo on the second episode, I hope that this becomes a running theme in that they find ways to avoid Horner having to cut any more in the future. I know people say Brian Lee is bad, but he's a hundred times better than Horner who really is a charisma vacuum.
  10. Dutch's friend Carl Styles is going to put an end to Brian Lee today, and although he's still a little under the weather he will be in Styles' corner for the match later in the show. Rogers claims to be the most well conditioned man in Smoky Mountain and to prove it will do free squats for the duration of the show. Dutch has been tremendous so far in Smoky Mountain and in this regional environment the likes of Rip Rogers and especially Barry Horowitz show what pretty bloody good hands they are.
  11. This is hilarious! Ron Wright want to share with us one of the thousands of letters he has received in the past few weeks. The writer says that they've been a fan of Wright's for years, that he was one of the greatest and best loved wrestlers ever and always liked how he showed the other wrestlers such good sportsmanship when they were trying to maim and cripple him. They're very sorry to hear he needs money for his operation so have enclosed $5, but wish it could be more for a kind old man like him. They hope that other fans will also write in and send money until he's able to find a good Christian athlete to manage. This nearly breaks Ron, knowing he has this kind of support from the fans, and appreciates it from the bottom of his heart! This interview was all kinds of awesome!
  12. Vladimir was supposedly on official business in Russia, so Ivan had aligned himself and formed a team with Jimmy Golden. They faced The Fantastics and when Jackie had the sleeper on Golden, Vladimir rushes from out the back and clobbers Jackie with a boot allowing Golden to get the pin. The heels are being interviewed post match when Bobby Fulton makes his way over, attacks them all, drags Ivan to the ring and a mass arena wide brawl ensues. Tim Horner makes an appearance to even up the sides and they continue to brawl as the end credits rolls over them all. Dutch Mantel is superb on commentary during this, claiming it is out of order what the Fantastics and Horner are doing and he's going to write to Commissioner Armstrong!
  13. This was a pretty heated promo. Budro says that although you've seen him in other organizations, the reason he didn't stay around is because he doesn't kiss ass and doesn't do promoters any favours. He's been told he can be himself in Smoky Mountain, he can pull eyeballs, slap hair lips and that this is where all the tough guys are. He's got a big ego and Smoky Mountain is where it's at.
  14. This was tremendous! Mr Wright's plight and condition has saddened Dutch Mantel no end and he knows how hard it is when you need something and need money to get it. Although he stands on his own, Dutch says it would be a great honour if Wright would accompany him down to ringside for his match against Brian Lee. Wright wipes his eyes and says that Dutch has bought tears to the eyes of an old man who is down on his luck. Whilst he is looking for someone to manage he doesn't really see anything in Brian Lee, but Medicare wont pay for his hip and knee implant, so after Dutch gets through with him, who knows there may be something for him to work with. Fantastic stuff!
  15. As a Brit, the references went completely over my head, but another interview paving the way for the debut of the Bodies. Cornette says that these days you don't know who to believe, and who to take at their word, but you can believe Jim Cornette. Talks about the most dynamic tag team ever who he's bringing to SMW and who will win the upcoming tag team tournament. Some funny digs at the audience too, by referring to them looking like a genetic experiment gone wrong!
  16. I thought this exact thing when watching the show last night and how easily it could have been mistaken for an episode of World Championship Wrestling from 1990 (the arena, the jobbers (Cazana, Horowitz, Kyle), Dutch Mantel, Robert Gibson etc). Fantasic interview by Cornette and the highlight of the debut episode. I liked his line about the big promotions turned wrestling into a circus and sideshow, so he turned his back on them. Talks about how these days its all about how many dolls you can sell at Toys 'R' Us and how juiced up on steroids you are. Without naming them, sets the story for the Heavenly Bodies to debut in a few weeks.
  17. Inspired by the Between the Sheets podcast, I've decided to finally delve into Smoky Mountain. I;ve got the complete TV run so plan to start at the beginning and see how far I get into it before losing interest. I watched the first episode last night and the interviews and the closing angle were the highlights of the show. Cornette cuts the best interview, talking about how the promotions have turned wrestling into a circus and how it is now whether you want to wear a funny costume, whether you can sell dolls at Toys 'R' Us and how juiced up on steroids you are. He says how they turned pro wrestling into a joke, so he has turned his back on them, but Smoky Mountain is 'real' wrestling and he has a tag team that will revolutionize tag team wrestling like the Midnight Express once did. Ron Wright is in his wheelchair and saying how he needs a hip and knee operation, so he is going to start scouting some talent to see if there is anyone he can sign to a contract, make some money and then get the operations he requires. Bob Armstrong is the commissioner and plans to bring back wrestling 'as it used to be, and as it should be'. The matches aren't much cop, although Barry Horowitz does a good job with Brian Lee (who already looks hopelessly miscast as a face though) and someone by the name of the Black Scorpion gets small packaged by jobber Paul Miller. The main event was Ivan Koloff vs Bobby Fulton and Ron Wright makes his way to ringside during this one to do some scouting. Towards the end of the match he shakes Koloff's hand but appears to pass him a chain in the process with which he clocks Fulton and gets the three count. Jackie Fulton runs to ringside to tell the referee what happened, who spots the chain and then reverses the decision. Vladimir Koloff then comes out and he and Ivan proceed to beat on Jackie before hanging him with a Russian chain over the top rope. The commentators (Bob Caudle and Dutch Mantel) speculate on whether Wright really did hand Koloff the chain or not. A very good ending to the show that makes you want to know what happens next and what is to come.
  18. Trust me, having recently watched some 1989 stuff it gets a lot worse if you stick with it! The Mat Classic segments are probably the best things on the show at that point.
  19. I had heard about the Onita/Invader angle, but the stuff Bix was saying about Onita blading his own stomach was all new to me (along with the rumour that he was doing it to set up a match in Japan so that the Yakuza could kill him!). Another home run of a show and this show more than anything has persuaded me that it's about time I dig into my 1995 Smokey Mountain set.
  20. Yeah, I'm sure Kelly is losing sleep over your performance this time! Amazing how you would have beaten everyone out the water this episode (unlike when you were on), but like someone else said, it's pretty easy when you google your answers. First time I listened to this and found it a fun 45 minutes, whilst Sorrow has a great radio voice. I was playing along and in real time against the guys, and the Blassie question was a stinker (I got a pitiful two, maybe could've struggled to three if I'd had longer). The one thing I will say is that in 'Name the Card', everyone requested a different number of matches yet they only appeared to get one point; possibly see if it you can work it so you get more points for getting the card from less matches. Despite Johnny giving away Hell in a Cell, it didn't seem fair that the person (sorry I forget whom) requested two matches, got the answer, then whomever was (sorry again!) guessing Uncensored requested four and got the same amount of points. Anyway, I'll be tuning in again and that Sid sleeze story was quality, as was everyone's reactions to it!
  21. Anyone have a link to those scans? I'd love to see them This is the link to the actual googledrive. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bwz_9MY5fi58ZGIxYjlmYzgtMTJhYy00YzBhLTg0NGQtNDFiODgxNGUwNWIw&usp=sharing
  22. I'm just over an hour into this and fascinating stuff once again. I didn't have anything against Todd but think Joe is a better guest and as a result it seems to flow a lot more easier. I'm certainly going to check out those Steve Beverly newsletters in Jason's scans (there is so much stuff there that I find myself getting lost amongst it), whilst the Haku story reminded me of one I read in the Observer. It was the time he was King Haku and was in a bar trying to get some women to 'bow down before the King', it resulted in some guys coming to her defense and a fight erupting. Needless to say, they came out on the wrong end of it!
  23. Even Okerlund wrestled the once!
  24. Don't think so as none of those guys got as big a push as DiBiase in 87-8 or storylines as big time as buying the belt / evil twin ref / WM4 tournament. Rude has the fact that Hogan wouldn't work with him as a knock. He feels closer to a Mr. Perfect than a Ted. Greg and Tito were strictly IC level. Jake is kind of a special case I think and has a lot of "man on the street" recognisability. If I went to any of my casual non-wrestler friends and asked them to name 5 wrestlers, I reckon Jake would be one of them. 'It has to be for stuff done in the WWF only in Hogan's 2nd run (January 84-WM VIII)' Dibiase I can agree on for the fact that he was pushed from the moment he arrived, and pretty much was always at the top of the card (that's why I said possibly). Jake no. Yes, he might have one of the most recognisable, remembered names from that era, but by the criteria there's not a chance he did more than Tito and Valentine in the period specified.
  25. Rick Rude cannot be apart of this list. Christ, yeah don't know what I was thinking of on that one!
