Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
GSR replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
Seems like way too many people votes. Ben Miller has had one since 2001 - that should tell you all you need to know. And I'd imagine Alvarez has had one since before that. -
[1992-09-05-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
The Fantastics were so cowardly and scared of the Heavenly Bodies that they wouldn't get in the ring with them for any amount of money, but Cornette eventually found their price. Robert J. Lacey, the vice president of the Third National Bank in Morristown is accompanying them and has the $20,000 in a briefcase. Cornette then promises the Fantastics that they are not getting their hands on the money and the Heavenly Bodies are taking it, and the tag belts home with them.- 7 replies

This is two weeks on the trot where we have had a good TV main event to close out the show (something that to be fair, has been a rarity all year so far). The Rock & Roll's get a ridiculous reaction, and the crowd are totally into them already with the Stud's getting the heat on Morton. As good as the action was, the finish came when Morton firstly shoves the official, then Fuller does and he ends up disqualifying both teams. This wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't done the exact same finish in the Paul Orndorff vs Ron Garvin main event from the week before! They could've easily achieved the same thing by having the two teams brawling at ringside and going to a double count out instead. The finish left me groaning and disappointed that they had to repeat what they had done on the previous show, and I'm starting to fear for the amount of screw job finishes that are in store.

Dutch informs us Jim that Cornette has now put up $20,000 against the belts to face the Fantastics. Bobby Fulton says that is a lot of money, so put your money where your mouth is and for $20,000 we'll sign! Bob Armstrong says that he is not going to take a cheque off Cornette or his mother, if they put cash in his hand he'll take it to the SMW bank and they'll have the match, but only as long as he gets the cash. Cornette tells him to leave his mother out of this as she's a silent partner and then states that he wants one further clause added to the match. He doesn't want to leave his $20,000 in the hands of one of his officials who do everything he says, he wants the best team to win, so insists on the match being no disqualification 'so there is no way they can call if off'. Bobby Fulton whispers something to Armstrong, who then says that they can have the no DQ match, but every time they wrestle your tennis racket ends up finding it's way into the ring. He says that they can have the match on TV next week, it'll be no DQ and with no time limit, but the racket is omitted from ringside. Cornette isn't happy, but Armstrong tells him there will be no match unless he signs the contract. He believes that Armstrong did everything within his power to get the belts on the Fantastics, and is now doing everything in his power to keep them on them. He reluctantly signs the contract and the match is set. Cornette is great here reacting off Armstrong and the Fulton, and it's another excellent segment in the feud which sadly appears to be drawing to a conclusion.

Bob Armstrong is out and holding a wanted posted with Brian Lee's face on it. He's found the posters on walls and in the dressing room for the past two weeks and somebody is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who is able to injure Brian Lee so that he is unable to continue to wrestle in SMW. He is joined by Lee and Armstrong tells him he's going to do his best to find get to the bottom of this and find out who is behind it. Lee says that $10,000 is a lot of money and people will do anything for that amount of money, but he's not hard to find and if you want some of him you better bring it as it will be a long day. Jim Cornette has asked his momma for some cash and she's putting up $10,000 that says they can take the Fantastics. Cornette asks the Bodies if he can put his faith in them and that her money is safe, and they tell him he has nothing to worry about as not only is her money safe but they'll get the belts back as well. Cornette then challenges the Fantastics; they'll put $10,000 up and on the line for a title match. The Fantastics reply and Jackie states how when they injured his knee they put the Fantastics out and they had to wait, well now it's their turn to make the Bodies wait. Bobby then says how Cornette's mum would be prepared to walk the streets to get those belts back round the Bodies waists. He turns down the $10,000 offer, but makes mention that they are pretty desperate and maybe they will offer more? I'm liking the look of both of these angles (especially the Brian Lee one), but the same monetary figure in both? I can understand that if the figure involved is more in the one than the other it would make that one look more important, and having the same in each tries to portray them as being on an even keel, but still. It doesn't help that these segment aired back to back on the TV show too. I'm guessing that the Mongolian Mauler tried to collect the bounty in the title match at Fire on the Mountain now (although how one clothesline would injure Lee I don't know). Good stuff upcoming me thinks!

[1992-08-08-SMW-Fire on the Mountain] Rock & Roll Express vs Stud Stable
GSR replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Airs in highlight form on the TV set and the crowd go wild for the Rock & Roll's return, whilst Robert is instantly a million times better already than he has ever been in Smoky Mountain now that he has Ricky by his side. Agree that the finish would have been better straight after the double dropkick, but we end up getting a lengthy post match beat down by the Stud's to prolong the feud between the teams.- 10 replies

This was jip on the TV set. Cornette throws some powder in Bobby's face when Armstrong spots it and then ejects him from ringside. He later sneaks his way back to ringside and throws his racket to Prichard to use. He swings back ready to nail Jackie, when Armstrong grabs it off him and Jackie rolls him up for the pin and title change (I'd point out it was also a fast count from Armstrong). I am imagining from the comments that this match was better in edited form, whilst I dig Prichard's back elbow off the top rope (even though he rarely hits it). Post match in the dressing room Prichard says how Bob Armstrong was going to make sure that they lost the titles regardless of what it took and they're not standing for it. Cornette then cuts a great promo about how they understood from the start that Armstrong meant for them to lose the belts but they thought they could do something about it. He let the Fantastics do everything they could and the one time Tom Prichard got his hands on something, he stuck his nose in. He tells Armstrong to sign a rematch between the teams within 24 hours otherwise he's getting his lawyers involved and will sue both Armstrong and SMW until they are flat broke. The main thing that I didn't like about this was that it is the second time that a face has won a belt in SMW, and on both occasions it was down to Bob Armstrong getting physically involved in the match (firstly with Brian Lee and now here). I'm not sensing a long reign for the Fantastics, but it does no-one any favours when they can only beat the champs by Armstrong's interference (and let's be fair he's no youngster either). Prichard is clearly the driving force on the wrestling side of the Bodies now and I can't imagine Stanfield was too happy having to blade and cut his forehead when he is so precious about his hairline!

[1992-08-08-SMW-Fire on the Mountain] Brian Lee vs Dirty White Boy
GSR replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Ron Wright grabs Mark Curtis' leg (in the subsequent television interview he claims he was having a heart attack and wanted Curtis to ring an ambulance for him!) distracting him. Lee hits the cancellation fee on Anthony when the Mongolian Mauler runs out, clotheslines Lee and Anthony covers him for the belt. Thought what aired looked decent and despite the complaints, I do think that Lee works hard but there is clearly something missing and he is not a top face who you can build your company around. Was this it for the Mauler?- 9 replies

This is a four team elimination match for $5,000, where the rules state that anyone can tag anyone and they must wrestle and if they don't they are DQ'd, whilst once either member of a team is pinned, submits, counted out or DQ'ed, both members are eliminated. Boy do I hate these rules! Put me in the camp that felt this bout improved when it became a regular tag match between the Stud Stable and Davis & Dy-No-Mite. Far too much time spent trying to get tag partners to face off against each other, or the face/heel teams trying to oppose each other in the early parts of the match. Prichard pins Jackie Fulton with the loaded boot, then Davis almost immediately pins the Doctor after Bobby Fulton clocks him in the back with the tennis racket. We return from a break and Davis is busted open and there are some great visuals of Davis with blood running down his face as the Studs get heat on him. Robert Gibson runs in for the DQ attacking Fuller and Golden with a cowboy boot and they take the $5,000. Terrible finish (although it plays in to the Stud Stable/Rock & Roll Express feud) in what had been the longest television match so far (bar the Mountain Mayhem rumble). Great showing from Davis, but everything about the Dixie Dy-No-Mite character is so cheap and tacky and I wish he would ditch the mullet! Really hope I don't see any more of these match stipulations in the future.

Dutch claims to have never disagreed personally with any of the fines that Bob Armstrong has given to the wrestlers, in fact he's agreed with everything that he's ever done, they couldn't have a better commissioner than him and he's said that plenty of times on the programme. However a lot of people have written in to him about certain issues (as he is the voice of SMW!) that they want him to ask Armstrong about. These issues are why did he fine Paul Orndorff for using the piledriver and not Brian Lee for using the cancellation fee? Why did he give the Fantastics complete leeway against the Heavenly Bodies? and why at Volunteer Slam did he don two hats, first as commissioner and then by jumping in the ring as referee? This is the fans asking these questions and not Dutch! Armstrong has a reasonable and just explanation for all of them and starts to get a bit exasperated by Mantel. He then goes on to say that the fans have written in to him too, and wants to tell everyone what Smoky Mountain Wrestling stands for. They don't have any Little Richard impersonators or wrestlers that go out in bad taste, we have role models and like athletes. We don't charge high prices, we charge regular prices so families can attend. We don't charge $30 for a PPV, why am I going to pay $30 to sit in my house and turn on the TV when I can go to any local arena and see my favourite stars in person and get their autograph? That's what SMW stands for and we're going to all the small cities that the other organisations think they're too big for. Dutch starts coughing at this point before Armstrong signs off and leaves the set. Excellent segment (at least the first half) and Dutch is hilarious with all his backtracking and claiming 'it's the fans' questions whilst these two work and play off each other so well. Not so keen on the WCW aimed rant from Armstrong and it's as though he's Cornette's voice here.

[1992-08-08-SMW-Fire on the Mountain] Heavenly Bodies vs The Fultons feud recap
GSR replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
This feud recap aired on the 8/1 TV show as well. Most of the footage had already aired on television at this point with the exception of the SMW street fight at Summerblast which was new to me. Excellent video piece and after seeing them brawl in the hallway, the parking lot, around the arenas and that a street fight couldn't settle things between the teams, makes you think what violence is in store when they are incapsulated in a barbed wire cage?- 8 replies

The Fantastics respond to the Bodies promo from earlier in the show. Bobby tells Bob Caudle that you know what it means to be a paper champion don't you? They're the kind of guys that go into the ring and don't win by ability (all whilst shredding a newspaper on some barbed wire that Jackie's holding). Fire on the Mountain is going to be the end for somebody and whilst they figure they are going to end up in the barbed wire a few times, they are going to throw the Heavenly Bodies into it a few more times and plan on leaving as champions. He then warns Cornette that if he gets in the ring he's going toget shredded, whilst the Bodies are going to get cut, and cut bad. Think this is the go home interview for the match at Fire on the Mountain. One of the things I like is how the TV shows all build for the main house show cards (first Volunteer Slam, then Summerblast and now Fire on the Mountain), you know exactly what matches are taking place and the TV makes you want to see these big events and this is no different here. The whole build for the Fantastics and Bodies feud has been excellent, whilst I'd say that with the exception of Bob Armstrong, Bobby Fulton is the best talker on the face side of the roster. Roll on the barbed wire cage match (although I sadly don't have this at the moment and am waiting to pick it up from someone in a trade), so will have to come back to review it later.

[1992-08-01-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
GSR replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Tom Prichard is wearing heavy duty gloves and carrying the barbed wire, whilst Bob Caudle says that Jim Cornette has been smiling about everything, but Bob Armstrong is going to be the referee and he is going to even things up. Cornette says that Armstrong only takes care of his friends and those who mean something to him, but he will be in the barbed wire cage with the Fantastics and the Bodies (kind of implying that there is every chance he will get hurt as well). Cornette goes on to say how the barbed wire will rip cows, horses and will sure rip the Fantastics. He then uses some tomatoes to represent the Fulton's and shows what will happen when they step in the cage, and shreds the tomatoes on the barbed wire. Good promo and build for the match at Fire on the Mountain. Stan Lane just stands there and comes across more disinterested the more I watch of the season. Maybe he's just concerned about that pesky wig falling off his head? Never expected that he would be my least favourite part of the Bodies act when I started on this. -
It's one of the proudest days in Dutch's life to have Fuller and Golden as guests on today's episode of Down & Dirty. Fuller returns the compliments and then starts to tell a tale about how going to his barn the other night and seeing two new born twin ponies. He called one of them Ricky and the other Robert and then says how he kicked those ponies until they yelped. When he got done with them he went and sat down, but those two ponies came over to him and rested their heads on his lap. Golden then says that it goes to show you can whip a little respect into something, and that's what they're going to do to the Rock & Roll Express. I wasn't as high on this as others seem to have been. There is no doubting on Fuller's delivery, but I wasn't sold on the content of the delivery at all. My least favourite Down & Dirty so far.
-
Quick promo with Cornette saying how the Fantastics are going to look like coleslaw when they get through with them in the barbed wire cage match at Fire on the Mountain. Stanfield continues to sell his ear problems (giving him the excuse to wear that laughable headgear to keep his syrup in place) and tells Caudle to quit shouting.

A special edition of Down & Dirty as Dutch Mantel is in Bucksnort, TN, the home of the Dirty White Boy. His home is in fact an abandoned auto car park and Dutch is a little scared so has bought some protection with him in the form of a dog. Dutch tells the dog if anyone comes at them to kill on sight and if they bother them, to rip their arms and legs off. He then starts calling out 'White Boy' whilst going past all these rusty, broken down vehicles until Anthony jumps out of one of them, startling the dog in the process who would've ran off if he wasn't on a lead. It transpires that Dutch woke him up, so he pours some water over his head to wake himself up, cleans his teeth with a swig of beer and then dries his face on Dutch's poncho. Dutch is here to ask him about his 'title vs leaving town' match against Brian Lee at Fire on the Mountain, and whilst the tables are stacked against him, Dutch believes he can take him. Anthony says that he knows he can take him, that he's going nowhere, that this is his home and after it's over the Dirty White Boy will walk out as the SMW champion, throw a party and get Mr Wright out of his wheelchair. Dutch's facials are tremendous here and you can almost smell how bad the Dirty White Boy smells from them. To this day I wonder what the Dirty White Girl ever saw in the Dirty White Boy, even more so after seeing where he lives and his hygiene routine! Funny stuff and I have seriously underrated Dutch as a talker, he's that good.

Gibson talks about how Jimmy Golden called an old friend up in Robert Fuller, well he's got old friends too and called up someone who he hasn't spoken to in over a year and will be glad to be by his side. A video is then played and it's Ricky Morton. Morton says how he's made a lot of mistakes in his life, but was in a situation where he lost everything that means anything to him and when that happened he turned against friends and family. When family fights it's okay, but no-one else interferes. He tells Golden and Fuller that you do not lay a hand on Robert Gibson and that they've got the Rock & Roll Express back together. He says how he lost everything he had, signed a big money contract, but it was a mistake as the money ended up meaning nothing as he had no-one to stand behind him like he used to. The Rock & Roll Express are going to reunite and he'll stand by Robert Gibson through thick and thin. Jimmy Golden says that Gibson hasn't got the right to bring in anyone from another organisation and he just hasn't got the guts to face him on his own. Bob Armstrong shows up and Fuller tells him that he knows what the rules and that they're not going to let him step out of one organisation and into another when he doesn't even have a license here to wrestle. Armstrong says that he doesn't care what 'they do', but he's going to let Ricky Morton come in here and the Rock & Roll Express will roll again! Fuller then says he's signing Morton's death warrant by allowing him to wrestle here. Boy is Gibson a dire promo! I said previously that I reckon they were just biding their time with him until Morton was available and I stand by that. Nice acknowledgement to their previous break up in WCW and I'm enjoying Robert Fuller already.
-
This match was bought about due to Gibson interrupting a Down and Dirty segment with Golden and a match immediately starting between the two of them. Dutch Mantel was again superb on commentary, wondering why Bob Armstrong isn't fining Gibson for interrupting his segment? Gibson hits Golden with a bulldog when Robert Fuller comes out, breaks up the pin and attacks the Rock & Roller. The two of them beat on Gibson with Fuller's cowboy boot and belt and leave him laying in the ring. Gibson has been a disappointment in SMW so far and you really feel as though they were just treading water with him and biding their time until Morton was available to come in. Which I am imagining won't be far away now...
-
Bob Armstrong is conducting the signing and says that since these two teams started wrestling each other we've had more trouble than anybody we've had trouble with before. If they're not fighting in the ring, it's in the parking lot, in an area where they shouldn't be, in the crowd etc. He says that on August 8th he's going to solve the two problems that these teams face, in that they will not stay in the ring and that Jim Cornette interferes in every match (a statement that Cornette vehemently denies). He plans to do this by surrounding the ring in barbed wire and then by barring Cornette from ringside. Cornette isn't happy about this and says that he's watched Armstrong stack the deck against his men for long enough to try and get the belts off them and run them out of town and won't stand for it anymore. He's got lawyers and with this being America you can sue anybody over anything, he'll call one of them and get this tied up in court for so long that Armstrong will be dead before it's settled. Bobby Fulton then has an idea and whispers something to Armstrong. He then makes one further stipulation to the match, he will allow Jim Cornette to come to ringside, but he'll be the special referee for the bout. Cornette is even less happy, getting on his knees and begging not for this before throwing a temper tantrum in the ring. Another good segment in the Fantastics vs Heavenly Bodies feud and Cornette and Armstrong are great playing off each other.

Dutch starts by playing a tape that was sent to him and it opens with a Garvin promo. He's in shape, is in condition and is coming to help Brian Lee at Summerblast. You think you've got a punch and a piledriver? Well I'm the master of that stuff, the master of hurting and crippling people. It's going to be a blast and I'll blast you into orbit! The higlight is this awesome old video footage of Garvin which features him getting the better of Andre the Giant and Jos Le Duc, dishing out piledrivers, all bloodied in a cage and generally beating people up set to 'I'm Evil' by Roy Buchanan. The video closes with a voice over saying 'his battle plan is simple, win at any cost'. Dutch says you've just seen the video and Wright is now unsure whether Anthony and Orndorff will be able to do anything to Garvin after seeing what he did there to the likes of Andre the Giant and Jos Le Duc. He says that it should be against the law to show something like that as you know he's got a bad heart, and he can't stand looking at that knowing these two beloved men (Orndorff and Anthony) are going to have to go up against that wild and crazy idiot! Anthony tells him to calm down and take his pills and whilst we're not Andre the Giant we are tough, and he has a right hand that will drop Ron Garvin. Orndorff then claims that the video has been doctored due to modern technology and that they will beat them at Summerblast. Quite probably the most effective thing I've ever seen in regards to Ron Garvin and the footage of him handling Andre was just surreal. Wright, as ever, was fantastic and I'm starting to fear that this poor, old, crippled man may end up having a heart attack on air the way that things are going! The Garvin video is on youtube (I was unsure whether to post it in here, so have posted it in Garvin's thread in the GWE forum).

Wasn't sure where to put this, but I saw this yesterday for the first time whilst watching my SMW TV set and thought it was pretty awesome. It was a video piece that aired on the TV show to build for Ron Garvin's arrival to team with Brian Lee against Tony Anthony & Paul Orndorff. It was enough to give poor old Ron Wright a near heart attack the way he say Garvin handling Andre the Giant!

Dutch is glad that Landell gave Horner the whipping his momma should have after he cost him the title last week. Landell says that he's the number one contender and as a result can get a title shot whenever he wants, unlike Horner, for whom they only come across once in a lifetime. Horner runs out to interrupt the segment wielding a whip and Landell makes a sharp exit out of the ring. Dutch then starts to backtrack and says how he's got nothing to do with this and he hopes he whips Landell like the dog he is, as he though it was awful him coming in the ring and hitting him like that. He thought it was despicable behaviour and won't tolerate it! Horner says that Buddy is digging his own grave and for every whip he puts on him, he'll put two on him in return. Dutch again tells him to whip him like a dog, he had no right to do that and he told Buddy that to his face! Mantel was great here switching sides and changing track when he was confronted by Horner brandishing the whip (in the segment after this on the TV set, he also denied any knowledge of doing this which was equally as funny). It's becoming a broken record but Landell is such a good talker and Horner wasn't as bad as he has been here.

How Much Bullshit is the PWI 500(full list below)
GSR replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Pro Wrestling
We've a thread to discuss the PWI 500? Jeez. Well I never knew PWI was still in existence, so that's one thing I can take from this I guess. -
They ain't in Madison Square Garden, they ain't in the Cow Palace, why? Cause they've got bad attitudes. This is Smoky Mountain Wrestling, you've got to be tough to work here, ain't no brown nosing and Buddy Landell doesn't know how to do politics, if he did, he'd be world champion. Strange interview as Anthony seems pissed (drunk) whilst Landell appears to be high as a kite. Both are behaving completely different to how you'd expect if you'd watched everything involving them up to this point, Anthony especially comes off like another character altogether. Just strange!

Prior to this segment airing on the TV show, they aired 'raw footage' of a wild and crazy backstage brawl between the Bodies, Cornette and the Fantastics from a spot show (this was also the first time we got to see Stanfield's almost amateur wrestling like headgear to keep his wig in place). Awesome Down and Dirty episode with Prichard and Cornette bringing the goods. Dutch considers the actions of the Fantastics despicable in the brawl and thinks that they should be locked up. Prichard says that in professional wrestling you may come across some pretty despicable people, you may even come across some criminal elements, and the Fulton's are the exact criminal element he's talking about. Look at his face (he's sporting a plaster above his eye), look at his head, you've seen the tape and saw the criminal activity that took place. He goes on to say that not only are they the SMW tag team champions, but they've had lots of offers from all over the country, offers to do commercials in Hollywood, record deals and not only are the Fantastics trying to run them out of wrestling, but they're trying to keep them from their other interests too. Cornette says that when he saw the lead pipe coming through the car back window shield they realised that the Fulton's aren't talking about taking the titles anymore, aren't talking about beating them up anymore, but are talking about doing serious damage to them. They've given them the choice of letting the Fantastics try to do that again to them and possibly succeed, or do they prevent them by doing it to them first? Give us the choice of us or you, and you ain't going to make it. Whatever we have to do we'll do it, however far we have to go, we aren't playing around no more, we can't afford to. It's not wrestling no more, it's life or death! Best promo of the year in SMW so far. Lane didn't say a thing, but Prichard and Cornette were off the charts here (to the point you can clearly see Cornette had worked up a sweat). Incredibly, money drawing stuff.
