Here's the article I was referencing: http://whatculture.com/wwe/10-wcw-wrestlers-who-were-ridiculously-overpaid.php

Wacholz earned something like a couple hundred grand a year for two years, whilst wrestling a grand total of one match (this was in the late 90s when WCW were signing up anyone). Bix posted a really good article on some of the contracts and money that WCW was throwing away and paying people in this period. Guys like Tank Abbott, Scott Norton, Dustin Rhodes, Stevie Ray were all on downsides of over $500,000 a year, whilst Swoll (Master P's buddy) was signed to a $400,000 a year contract! I'll see if I can find it as it made for some fascinating reading.

Do you mean you've never seen those 1989 vignettes? There's a few of them up on Youtube. The main one who sticks out as having their past accomplishments acknowledged by WWF would be Flair.

There's quite a lot of dark matches from this period that are in circulation amongst traders already (due to Satellite feeds). There is at least one example of him hitting the shooting star (in a tag match with Shelton Benjamin against BJ Payne and Shooter Schultz) amongst these and Benjamin hits a 450 in the same match.

Cheers, I've just had a read of it on Twitter. The fact that his response was 'I have it somewhere', does make you wonder what else he has 'somewhere'; probably unlabelled, unwatched for years and every chance deteriorating on video.
-
Is it regarding dark and try out matches from WWF tapings?

If you ever picked up the International Challenge set, Magee vs Gibbs is on there. As someone mentioned earlier, I've always wondered whether Meltzer actually 'has' a copy of Bret vs Magee or just watched it somewhere? The assumption online has always seemed to be that he 'has' a copy because he's written about it in the Observer, yet I can never specifically recall him saying outright that he does.

As an addendum to this, I've just seen Armstrong beat Liger clean with the Russian leg sweep on the 5.27.96 episode of WCW Prime. Was Prime just a highlight show or did it have exclusive matches? Primarily it was just a repeat of matches that aired on either Pro or Worldwide, although there were one or two exclusives each week (like with Main Event). Yup, it's the same match Butch. Was watching a episode of main Event and noticed it cut off half way through and according to someones list it was missing Alex Wright vs Jean Paul Levesque. Didnt think much of it till I wanted to watch their Starrcade match on youtube and noticed the main Event match was on there so wondered if this match aired on another show that used to show matches from other shows of the week. Levesque had already quit WCW by the time Prime debuted (Feb '95) so it wouldn't have been repeated on there (if it's repeated at all).

I think so. They should have spaced it out a bit better so it wasent so close to the Rumble. Either that or have those two battle the Harts for the titles. If there was a nerd choosing the matches you would think they'd choose something that hadent been shown on TV so every match is a exclusive ie the MSG matches or matches from Superstars. Theres a ton of stuff they taped during the TV tapings they should have released. Im sure I read somewhere Sammartino & Hogan had a tag match together in the late 80s. 08.29.87 Hulk Hogan & Bruno Sammartino bt One Man Gang & King Kong Bundy (this was on a houseshow in Baltimore, MD)

That's a pretty cool extensive list... But yeah, a bit too much dude! Keep it simple, let everybody have a go. Feel free to use wrestlers more than once if you haven't already. Remember, it's singular opinion based. Here's another: Wrestler: Rick Steiner Greatest Match: Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner © vs. Sting and Lex Luger - WCW Superbrawl I (WCW Tag Team Championship) Greatest Rivalry: Rick Steiner vs. Mike Rotunda (JCP/WCW) and another: Wrestler: Samoa Joe Greatest Match: Samoa Joe vs. Christopher Daniels © vs. AJ Styles - TNA Unbreakable (NWA X Division Championship) Greatest Rivalry: Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk (ROH) I thought the premise of this thread was to try and introduce people to new stuff they may not have seen? Has anyone on here NOT seen that Superbrawl tag? I could say the same for that TNA three way, in that anyone who's paid an interest in the promotion would've watched that.

Not a full on upset, but I watched Brad Armstrong go to a time limit draw against Jushin Liger on an episode of Saturday Night from 1992 recently.

My sentiments exactly.

To be fair though, from what I remember 1993 wasn't a great year for WCW. I know, but nothing good to say with Vader, Flair, the Blonds, Windham, Steamboat on the cards.....? To be fair, there's a lot of times when wrestling looks worse or better at the time than looking at it some time laterFlair, Vader and pre-amnesia angle Cactus were the exceptions I thought of when writing that. Elsewhere I just associate 1993 WCW with the likes of the Cole Twins, Ice Train, Charlie Norris, The Equalizer, the Kongs, Shockmaster, Wrecking Crew etc.

This whole list is bullshit because we can eliminate half of these in a heartbeat. Armstrong did main events in Mid South and SMW. Tommy Rich main evented in Georgia and Memphis. Owen Hart did main event in the WWF Jim Brunzell did main events in the AWA Koko B Ware did main event tags in Memphis. Nikolai Volkoff was in main events or higher up the card earlier in the WWF If the guy making the argument can't come up with ten CAREER lower midcarders without including tag teams or guys who did main event elsewhere, why are people even engaging in this debate? Albert headlined in Japan too. I thought the whole premise of the GWE was a bit of fun and something to encourage us watching wrestling, and hopefully open our eyes to a bunch of workers that we may not have seen before or be aware of? It's threads like this that make we wonder why I am even considering doing this.

Cheers for those two dawho.

Any recognitions for the 'pissed off' side of Faulkner? Of the handful of bouts of his (this includes his tag stuff with Bert Royal) I've seen, it's all been cheeky, trickster Faulkner which has grated with each match that I've seen, and this was someone who I was initially looking forward to seeing more of after his bout with Johnny Saint. Cortez is someone that folks need to see more of and is one half of my favourite 70s and 80s WOS bouts.

Kris has already touched on it, but I really dug Rude & Fernandez as a team when I was going through my 1986/7 NWA discs.

Based on what? Unless they go out of their way to find guys that they know have no business in the Octagon (like Punk) I can't see him beating a guy who has been training for a couple years, even if that guy has only fought a few local MMA fights. I think Punk probably has an insane work ethic and maybe his opponents take him lightly? Like I said, I don't watch UFC. Or any type of MMA. I'm not qualified to have any base of opinion. It's just hard to envision him getting destroyed like some of ya'll are saying. You don't watch MMA, but don't think he'll be destroyed? Huh? How can you make that assessment? Personally I think Demetrious Johnson would smash him, in fact I'd even take Ronda over him! Just makes an even bigger mockery of the UFC in that Dana constantly puts down and ignores someone like Ben Askren but signs Punk.

CM Punk on Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling
GSR replied to goodhelmet's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Oh, he's such a rebel that Punk! He blocked the company he worked for on Twitter, what a wacky, crazy and funny guy he is! Zzzz -
Steve Grey was the first WOS guy I thought of. I've not watched much 70's Jones yet. Jon Cortez is one half of my favourite WOS match of the decade (so far), and what about someone like McManus? Sarjeant is badly hindered by how much footage we have, and I'm really high on Clay Thomson but there is even less of him on tape than there is Sarjeant.
