To answer one of Dylan's questions about shots against Bruno. Here's a quick tally of guys with multiple singles matches against Bruno during his reign. If you meant specifically at MSG, I'd have to look again. Working on tallying up the others through at least Backlund.

I don't see Spiros Arion on your list. Is this everybody?

I'm just going through Graham Cawthon's listings, so there are obviously gaps, but I think there's enough information that percentages will be reasonably close, even if hard numbers aren't.

Right, but how typical was The Spoiler? Can you count guys like Ivan and him on one hand or were there 20 of them moving around the country? I don't know if evil clown's "recycling" point is a really fair criticism since that was the way the business worked, but if it can be shown that Ivan was one of only a select group of top guys that promoters would be willing to "recycle" in this way, then surely it says that Ivan's career was more than just "good".

 

I guess another question would be and Hollinger's lists will probably provide the answer: was he really always headlining? How many times did he work underneath and how often? He's not on top during the 83 Georgia run, for example. Was that typical of his 70s runs or not? Not every territory booked like Vince Sr bringing in a villain who gets 3 matches for the title -- so I'd be interested to see how exactly he was used in different areas. To me, tagging with Ole in Georgia in the 70s signals a high position on the card, for example, but let's see.

Edit: Han and Hamada are the two guys on the Japanese ballot I would be most inclined to vote for, but I'm not 100 percent positive I think either really belongs the more I think about it.

Another follow up question for voters here - Do you feel compelled to vote for people just to keep them on the ballot for further review? I ask this because in the areas where I feel like I would be qualified to vote I don't think I could find ten guys I am positive I feel should be in, but there are a few slots I would be tempted to give to guys I would be afraid would fall off the ballot and into obscurity otherwise. I'm not saying that SHOULD be the role of voters, but do any of you guys feel that way?

I sent you the Rings results record last year right? Han and Tamura are both outstanding and at that style I don't think anyone has ever been better unless you count Fujiwara as a rep of that style. I just don't know how much that really means in the grand scheme of things. I can see a case for both guys, especially Han, but he's just a really tough guy to compare to the existing field.

I see the comment "Lesnar's only on because of MMA" and I don't think that's accurate. People are ignoring that he was a NCAA heavyweight champion. Amateur credentials count for something with the WON HOF.

 

I also believe in setting precedents when it comes to hall of fames, some good some bad, and I think a precedent for Lesnar was set by letting Angle in in 2004. You can't convince me that Angle in 04 was a demonstrably better candidate than Lesnar, but he's in, so Lesnar should be a serious candidate.

I have never voted for somebody to keep him on the ballot because I always ended up voting for more people than I initially thought.

 

However, I have voted for people that need the support more than other names that I consider stronger candidates. But I have never voted for anyone that I didn't consider a true HOF'er at the time that I voted.

I am hoping to finish a Gordy List on Patera I just don't think it's going to happen before most people have already voted. I hate to not do it right/do it half assed especially in lieu of all the work I've done on him over the last year or so. Hopefully he won't fall of the ballot this year and I can have it out before next years vote.

If we say "Wrestler X is in, so Wrestler Y has to be a serious candidate" look out. There a fuck load of people I think are better candidates than Ultimo Dragon

Dylan mentioned Ventura getting votes for reasons that aren't related to wrestling, and it got me thinking. I imagine he's referring to being Governor of Minnesota. Couldn't that count under the "Was he a draw?" requirement? He was enough of a draw to get enough voters to make him Governor. He drew the majority of voters. And the main reason was his promo skills during the debates, mixed with his fame as a wrestler.

I think when you take everything into account (among the most famous wrestling related personalities ever, an iconic on camera face of the WWF during their hottest period, a legitimately great colour commentator, and a successful in-ring career) I'd vote for him. I'd also vote for Mean Gene. I'm also biased towards 80's WWF as that's what I grew up on, but every voter has his own biases.

On Weston there isn't a ton written about him or at least not that I know of. I know he's in the International Boxing Hall of Fame for his contributions there and people who worked with him talk about him being a genius with photos. Here is a list of wrestling magazines that is charted with fields for publisher and founder/editor. Weston appears far more often than anyone else.

Random comments on some candidates

 

BROCK LESNAR

 

Lesnar to me feels like a guy who could be a peak Hall of Famer. Certainly a draw, as a worker he's good enough. But he hasn't done it for very long, even by the standards of short peak Hall of Famers. I almost want to say Lesnar is the American equivalent of Tiger Mask. I think the problem with Lesnar is the same problem we had with Kurt Angle. Controversial candidate, but the real problem is that it's just way too early to assess his career. We need perspective.

 

HOWARD FINKEL

 

I'm deeply biased on this. My feeling is that Jimmy Lennon is in the WON Hall. Once you've established that ring announcers are eligible, then there's no announcer in history more well known and influential than Finkel.

 

STANLEY WESTON/BILL APTER

 

I went back and forth on Apter. I noted that there was a precedent for ring announcers. There's no precedent for writers. Any election becomes a standard for future writers.

 

JESSE VENTURA

 

Where do you draw the line as far as popularity outside wrestling? Posters here are skeptical of NCAA and MMA credentials. They will likely argue against Ventura's political career being a factor. Let's take El Santo as a comparison. Is his movie career off limits as well? Or even someone such as the Destroyer. I don't really have a firm position, just something I can't quite reconcile in my head.

I'm back to a computer. I looked at WWWF/WWF results 1963-1983 and pulled out all of the World Champion singles matches (I did not discriminate between title/non-title).

2. All results were taken from TheHistoryofWWE 1963-1983 this morning, so there is the possibility of missing results, duplicated results, non-WWF cards and plenty of other shenanigans. There's a handful of matches that I left out - matches where the title was vacant (at least in local lore) and so the winner was declared the new champion (Bob Backlund defeated Bobby Duncum in a Texas Death Match to win the vacant WWF World Title at 17:18 in 1979) or all of the Antonio Inoki as world Champion matches (add one more for Backlund, Duncum, Morales if you're so inclined).

 

3. This doesn't give priority to major markets (i.e. MSG is weighted the same as House show in PA) and does include the shows where there's only a "A vs B" listing (which we'll assume actually happened, but the match may have not.). I filtered on explicitly on the phrase "World Champion" so it's possible some title defenses where the champion was involved, but for whatever reason the match listing failed to note they were "WWWF World Champion" could be excluded.

 

4. I excluded all multi-man matches - no six-man tags, no handicap Bruno beats up Buggsy McGraw & Lou Albano and only WWWF/WWF World Champion (i.e. 1980's Peter Maivia vs. AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel wasn't included).
