Apparently Dana has set off a small controversy after calling wrestling fake. This has lead to fans calling him names, posting pictures of Brock Lesnar and asking him to get in the ring. It's also caused a bunch of wrestlers to go after him for the comments.

I hate to say it, but I'm siding with Dana on this. Aside from his choice of words, he's not really all that hard on the profession and wrestlers and wrestling fans have this weird hang up about the word fake. I wanted to ask: is there a difference between fake and scripted? Are wrestlers making fools of themselves by posting pictures of injuries they suffered as proof that it's not fake?

This is such a bullshit controversy. I am about as big a fan of wrestling as anyone and the word "fake" doesn't bother me at all. I also don't get upset at Dana saying the "fake shit" is only worth $9.99 because it isn't even worth that to me, I'm not giving WWE my money for the Network because I don't like their current product enough and they refuse to upload anything pre-1997.

Stunt men get hurt all the time do you think they get upset if you call movies fake?

I've never taken a single bump that didn't hurt at least a little bit. I don't like the f-word, and have a standard pre-packaged lecture for any non-fans who use it.

Especially since mainstream culture still has this idiotic opinion that wrestling still pretends to be real combat, and that the fans buy into it. This hasn't been true for any company in America for decades now. Yet people will still condescendingly sneer "don't you know it's FAKE?" as if the idea had never occurred to us before. Sheeyit, even the South Park wrestling episode fell into that trap, depicting the fans as a sea of ignorant rednecks who completely buy the entire show as being absolutely legitimate.

I'd imagine that yeah, they probably do.

Notice how every wrestler criticizing Dana is from TNA or non WWE. WWE doesn't want anyone or anything upsetting Dana right now. Bunch of wrestlers, including Steph and Hunter, were showing support for Ronda on twitter. What a bunch of ass kissers! :)

Well Rollins called him out so forget that shit. Still I bet he gets heat for that. Almost all the critics were non wwe though

Dave Meltzer seems to be on the side of "Why is anyone upset over this?" From his twitter account:

"Hope everyone who complained about Dana also complained about all the bikini models taking a splash off the top like it's nothing."

"Seriously, the people who script wrestling do 1,000 times more for the public to think it's fake than some MMA promoter on Twitter."

Honest to God, up until I just read this thread, I thought Dana White was a woman.

Why's he got a woman's name?

It's him showing his support for the idea of gender neutral names.

Why is nobody mentioning the unintentional hilarity pushed by the original tweet sent to Dana? The one about how Vince is winning because he only charges $9.99 for his shows instead of $60? Hell, if the goal is to make the least amount of money possible, TNA pisses all over WWE.

Hip-Hop ain't responsible for violence in America

America's responsible for violence America

Johnny, you're right. In fact the name "Dana" has a long history of blurring gender boundaries.

Who could ever forget this?

Do they get Eurovision in the US? If not, don't bother. LOL

Dana also said he had a lot of respect for wrestlers. Not sure what the controversy is.

Just the normal outrage competition of twitter.

Aye. I'm just amused that it's not just fans, but wrestlers getting annoyed.

Anyone in contact with John Stossel? Maybe Austin can slap him a few times.

Were wrestling fans always as sheepish as they are now? I guess they were, but these are the same people that will say "It's not 1978, everyone knows it's not real" the next time WWE does something completely implausible. As I get older, the cult-like nature of wrestling creeps me out more and more.

Indeed.

Love your new avatar BTW.

So with this newfound reverence for kayfabe, there are so many changes fans can force upon WWE. I'm excited!

- No more entrance music for run-ins!

- No more ghost cameras!

- No more Bray Wyatt gimmick!

- Undertaker either repackaged as "Mark Calloway" or never on television again!

- No more "fictitious" disclaimers on the WWE Network!

- No more character-breaking podcasts on the WWE Network!

- More week-to-week continuity in storylines!

- Dozens of other things!
