goc Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 Saw a few different trustworthy accounts on twitter report that lucha legend Mocho Cota has died at the age of 62. I know he was a favorite among some of the posters here and did fairly well in the GWE poll for a guy who didn't seem to get much love before the 80s Lucha set got released. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of footage of him during his prime in the 80s but what we do have makes him look like an all time great rudo. RIP
ohtani's jacket Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 That's too bad. One of the things about Cota that doesn't really come across in the footage we have is that he used to rent random costumes from fancy dress shops and wear them to the ring each week. You can see it a bit in his AAA run after he was released from prison.
Grimmas Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 Somehow I need to watch more of, but everytime I saw him really impressed. 60 is too young to go.
Matt D Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 I couldn't rationalize putting him higher than I did in GWE (one before Hansen at 25), but if it was a list of my all time favorites, he'd be top five.
soup23 Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 This is a bummer. Probably one of the true guys of the 80's sets I havent seen or thought of at all that really impressed me coming out of it.
Johnny Sorrow Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 Will turned me onto him some years back and I thought he was awesome. 2016 strikes again.
Zenjo Posted December 24, 2016 Report Posted December 24, 2016 Hey at least his greatness got discovered in his lifetime (just). I'm sure that his final days would've been made all the brighter by reading select English language wrestling forums. Now he can be reunited with his long lost fingers in Lucha heaven (if it works like that). RIP Mocho Cota
Microstatistics Posted December 26, 2016 Report Posted December 26, 2016 Incredible charisma + Incredible skill. His match with Americo Rocca from 1/27/1984 is one of the great matches I have ever seen. His overall greatness was easily evident despite the limited amount of footage. RIP.
cad Posted December 26, 2016 Report Posted December 26, 2016 Incredible charisma + Incredible skill. Yeah, I agree with this, and to me the skill tied his character together. It made him into almost an evil genius rather than just a trash talker. Does anyone know anything about Cota's listed maestro, Reveles Lopez? It looks like he was not a big name among trainers, which would mean that Cota got as far as he did without a boost from any kind of pedigree.
