Beginning in the fall of 2001 Angle started to look more and more like a guy who didn't care for his opponent as long as he looked good. Didn't he and his wife get very upset that Rob Van Dam didn't pull his kicks during their feud?

RVD went on a run of legitimately busting open people he worked with when he first got a big push. Angle was one of several that were upset.

So is the main event of WrestleMania going to be Triple-H vs. John Cena again or a Sheamus-Cena-Hunter triple-threat?

The real main event in terms of what gets the most hype will probably be Bret vs Vince, followed by HBK vs Taker in what I'm betting will be some sort of "loser must retire" match.

Does Taker drop the belt before then, or do they have a title match? If he drops the belt, what would be the SD title match? Jericho/Edge? It looks like Orton/DiBiase will be another match on the show also. I wouldn't be surprised to see them reprise HHH/Batista to give HHH a high profile match and also let him get his win back from a few years ago. No clue how Cena fits into everything, but that's actually a pretty decent group of top matches when you add in Bret/Vince.

Meltzer in the WON was saying Bret/Vince, UT/Michaels, HHH/Sheamus (so I guess Cena isn't getting the belt back right away), Edge/Jericho, Orton/DiBiase, Cena/Rock or Cena/Batista (WWE wants Rock, but that's probably a loooooooong shot), Punk/Hardy if Hardy's legal issues are cleared up, and MITB.

Rock is angling to get more involved with WWE so who knows. His movie career is certainly unspectacular right now.

I haven't heard anything to suggest that he wanted to be more involved with WWE outside of hosting RAW, but maybe I missed the memo. My only comment is why do people want so badly to minimize his movie career? Sure, he's not going to be Oscar nominated anytime soon, but most of his movies have been moderate to major successes and I don't think any have been considered flops.

So we can assume Rey will miss Mania due to surgery? Or will he be in MITB? Or Punk's opponent if they can't use Hardy?

People thought he was going to be the next Schwarzanegger despite the fact that to my knowledge Rock never said he intended to be the next big action star. Rock can do better than the Tooth Fairy and considering his roles in Faster, The Other Guys, the film done by the guy who directed Ong Bak, and the new Clint Eastwood film it seems he'll be moving along just fine. I can't think of many actors who get an Oscar in the first ten years of their career.

That would be wild for a former IWA Mid South main event to be a mid-card Mania match.

Last word was that Rey's gonna work through WM.

Rock's film career is doing just fine. His films make money and he has a lot of projects lined up

Yup. He had a multi-picture deal with Disney and has really found his niche in family movies. He's definitely considered a successful actor. He is definitely considered legit in this town. It's not like John Cena or Ted Dibiase calling themselves "movie stars"

I have a place that's pretty much cemented in Hollywood in terms of box-office viability. The only thing an Oscar would do is jack my check up maybe $1 million.

Rock's career is going fine by the standards of someone leaving another entertainment or sports field and going into movies. Not off the charts or great by just the movie standards, but perfectly fine. He has lots of stuff still in the pipeline, and his last three movies have all done well (setting aside Southland Tales since it was both an older movie sitting in post production hell and also on something critical to his career).

As far as being in the mode of Arnold, what Rock said at the time isn't relevant. It's a matter of looking at his roles:

Mummy 2

Scorp King

Rundown

Walking Tall

Doom

Gridiron Gang

That's pure early Arnold from an entry level movie to action b-movie o'rama.

He revived his career with a Disney "family comedy", which isn't likely what he expected to be the wheelhouse of his career and almost certainly is something he's like to move out of if he could. On the other hand, he'd take it if that's where the hits end up being for him. I doubt he'd like to be early era Kurt Russell, but if that's what writes his checks, he'd rather do that than wrestle in the WWE and deal with a fuck like Trip.

Still, Rock would love to final lead a $200M movie: a true major hit. He hasn't come remotely close to that. It's a bit of a pain in the ass when freaking Ben Stiller has kicked the living shit out of you at the box office like a drum.

And when I meant unspectacular I said that he hasn't become the huge action star that everyone thought he would become where he would be in Michael Bay style movies but yeah he is successful in the Disney genre.

Rock was approached to guest host RAW on 1/11 before Tyson was announced and didn't give a concrete answer so they announced Tyson then Rock wavered for 24 hours before saying he couldn't do it so Tyson was again announced formally.

In this weeks Observer Dave mentions a Funk v. Lawler rematch worked around the Empty Arena angle. I remember seeing promos for this at one point but never heard about the match which apparently did great business for an indy. Does anyone have the gate and attendance figures for that show or any details on it?

This is it. Transcripts of Funk's promos for the match were included in his book as part of a chapter on promos.
