AWA World Title First Round Tournament Match

Bobby Blaze vs. AWA 6-Man champ Ricky Santana w/Austin Idol

Idol struts out of the ring as the Ref signals for the bell. Santana arrogantly pushes Blaze. Blaze comes back and pushes Santana down to the mat. An irate Santana gets up and charges but Blaze hip tosses him over. Santana hops up and charges again but Blaze back drops him. Santana staggers up as Blaze dropkicks him down. Blaze picks up Santana and snap suplexes him 1..2..Kick Out. Blaze continues to work Santana over until a distraction from Idol allows Santana to send Blaze through the ropes with a double axehandle to the back. Santana distracts the Ref as Idol slams Blaze's head on the apron and hurls him back into the ring.

Santana swings Blaze to the ropes and puts him down with a flying back elbow smash 1..2..Kick Out. Santana slams Blaze, goes to the middle ropes and crashes down with a knee drop 1..2..Kick Out. Santana swings Blaze to the ropes and hits a flying press 1..2..Kick Out. Both Idol and Santana argue with the Ref, saying his counts are too slow. Santana swings Blaze to the ropes and goes for a back drop but Blaze kicks Santana.

Both men are reeling. Santana staggers up as Blaze grabs Santana and slams him down. Blaze swings off the ropes but Idol trips him. Blaze staggers then turns around and goes out after Idol. Blaze chases Idol around the ring. Blaze gets back in the ring. Santana goes for a clothesline but Blaze ducks, turns around, kicks Santana and executes the Northern Lights Suplex 1..2..3! Big Pop! Bobby Blaze is going to Champagne Slam!

'RPM' Mike Davis vs. Tommy 'Wildfire' Rich

Rich enters the ring wearing his "I'm the real AWA world champion' T-Shirt. He takes it off and throws it in Davis's face. Rich clotheslines Davis down. Rich mocks Davis and laughs, then spends too much time yelling at the fans. Rich turns around as Davis cradles him 1..2..Rich frantically kicks out. Davis is all over Rich. He swings Rich to the ropes and dropkicks him down. Davis swings off the ropes and hits a jumping elbow drop 1..2..Kick Out. Davis clamps on a headlock and punches away on the top of Rich's head. Davis wrenches the headlock and hits a running bulldog 1..2..Kick Out. Davis swings Rich to the ropes but misses a clothesline, Rich swings back but he misses a clothesline, Davis swings back and goes for a dropkick but Rich grabs the ropes as Davis hits the mat.

Rich regroups, picks up Davis and hot shots him on the top rope. Rich swings Davis to the ropes and hits the Thesz Press 1..2..3! Rich rolls out of the ring and falls to the ground. Rich staggers up and goes to the announcer's table. He grabs the mic.

Rich: (deep breath) Wildfire is back and the world title is coming back to where it belongs, around my waist!

AWA World Title First Round Tournament Match

'Champagne' Gerry Morrow vs. Thunderstruck

The fans have taken a liking to Thunderstruck as he enters the ring to cheers. The cheers turn to roaring boos as Morrow arrogantly enters the ring wearing a glitter green vest, green shorts and green knee pads and boots. He's got on sunglasses and his fedora hat. Morrow smiles at the booing fans as he slowly takes off his fedora and sunglasses.

The bell rings as Morrow takes his sweet time getting ready. He brushes Thunderstruck away several times as the boos get louder. Morrow slowly walks up to Thunderstruck and looks him over. Morrow slaps Thunderstruck across the face. Thunderstruck pauses, then absolutely unloads on Morrow with fists. Thunderstruck swings Morrow to the ropes and powerslams him over 1..2..Morrow barely kicks out. Thunderstruck hoists Morrow up and drops him with a delayed vertical suplex. Thunderstruck goes to the top rope.

Wait! Brenda Britton walks out and yells up at Thunderstruck. This distraction allows Morrow to run up, pull Thunderstruck's boots and crotch drop him on the turnbuckles. Morrow pulls Thunderstruck down. Morrow executes an inverted atomic drop. Morrow slams Thunderstruck and goes to the top rope. Morrow crashes down with a flying headbutt 1..2..3! BOOOOOOOOO!

Britton walks over to the camera and pulls out something. She shows it to the camera. It's a manager's license. Britton laughs and gets into the ring. Morrow kisses her hand. Britton raises Morrow's hand in victory as the boos continue. Looks like Morrow is heading to Champagne Slam. Morrow grabs the announcer's mic.

Morrow: HAHAHAHA! I told you, de champagne man has it all. Except one thing. HAHAHAHA, but do not worry because I will be walking out of de event I created wit de AWA world title. HAHAHA

Britton: And that's a promise! Toooooodles!

Commercial Break

AWA World Title First Round Tournament Match

Hulk Hogan vs. Shinya Hashimoto

Hashimoto enters the ring looking focused and intimidating. Eye of the Tiger blasts and the fans explode! Hogan comes down the aisle with nothing but determination in his eyes. He enters the ring and rips off his shirt. His mid section is taped, obviously still feeling the effects of the Japanese's multiple powerbombs weeks ago. The scar on his forehead is heeling but still visible. I don't think any of these things matter to Hulk. He's ready to go.

The bell rings and Hogan's all over Hashimoto with fists. Hogan swings Hashimoto to the ropes and puts him down with the Axe Bomber. Hogan drops 3 consecutive elbow drops 1..2..Kick Out. Hogan swings Hashimoto to the corner and charges in with a running clothesline. Hogan swings Hashimoto to the opposite corner and hits another running clothesline. It's all Hogan until Hashimoto finally stops the momentum with a spinning heel kick.

Hashimoto spends some time clearing the cobwebs. Hogan staggers up as Hashimoto nails him with several chops, then puts Hogan down with a kick. Hashimoto works Hogan over with a triangle choke for a while. Hashimoto hoists Hogan up and executes a Vertical Drop Brainbuster! 1..2..Hogan barley kicks out. The fans try to pump Hogan up. Hashimoto swings Hogan to the ropes but misses a big chop, Hogan swings back and clotheslines Hashimoto down.

The fans are cheering as Hogan pumps his fists. Hogan swings Hashimoto to the corner and charges in but Hashimoto charges and clotheslines Hogan down. Hashimoto regroups.

Hogan staggers up as Hashimoto grabs him and hits a DDT 1..2..Hogan barley gets his arm up. The fans are up and cheering. Hashimoto swings Hogan to the corner and charges in but Hogan nails him with a big boot to the head. Hashimoto falls back and down. Hogan rests and regroups against the turnbuckles.

Hashimoto staggers up as Hogan clotheslines him down. Hogan picks up Hashimoto and body slams him down. Hogan swings off the ropes and hits the big leg drop! 1..2..3!! Mega Pop!

Hogan gets to his knees and holds his head high. Hogan stands up and soaks in all the cheers.

The camera pans up the aisle. Gerry Morrow is holding a bottle of champagne. Hogan sees him and gives him a point then gives him a I'm going to break you in half gesture with his hands. Morrow looks a bit worried but then smiles and raises his champagne bottle in a toast gesture. Morrow exits.

Hogan celebrates with the fans as the show ends.

Austin has to be so pissed that none of his Idol's made it past the first round.

Creepy segment with Shaw.

Colon makes sure he stays warmed up to ace Mascaras.

Figures Brenda is doing what she can to help de champagne man make it through the tournament.

Hogan gets his first real bit of revenge by heating Hashimoto.

Really enjoying the tournament to crown a new champ.  I think the Hogan contract saga, when it is all said and done, will have a huge impact on who is the next AWA champ!

Tonight's main event will be for the AWA National tag team titles as the Heavenly Bodies defend against the Rock n Roll RPMs. That should be an outstanding match up.  Right now, I want to send you to a special Champagne Report.

AWA commissioner Magnum TA is sitting at a desk with the AWA world title sitting in front of him.

Magnum: As all of you know, Champagne Slam happens on Friday April 17th from the Market Square Arena. After an action packed first round, the next round has been set for Champagne Slam. Here are the matches.

We get some Champagne Slam promos

Kerry Von Erich: My goal has always been to become AWA world champion, I'm one step closer and at Champagne Slam I plan on going all the way!

Iceman Parsons: Kerry Von Erich! You're just an obstacle on my way to the title! I'm taking you down Rooty-Poo and I'm the one who's going to be standing tall at the end!

Jackie: That's right baby!

The Tribal Nation vs. Los Boricuas

These two teams want to get in title contention and this is their chance to shine. Tribal Nation have been in the AWA for a while and have worked their way to some title shots but have come up short. Los Boricuas debuted a couple months ago and tonight will be their toughest test.

The match goes back and forth with clean but aggressive wrestling. Both teams display incredible teamwork and chemistry. Tribal Nation take control and almost get the win with stereo double tomahawk chops from opposite turnbuckles but Perez manages to survive. Mark hoists Perez up for an atomic drop but as Perez is in the air, he's able to reach out and tag in Castillo. Mark atomic drops Perez but Castillo dropkicks Mark from behind. Castillo works over Mark and tags in Perez. Castillo suplexes Mark as Perez hits a sling shot splash 1..2..3! Chris comes in a second too late. Big win for Los Boricuas. The Tribal Nation are clearly disappointed.

Nelson: Austin Idol, your men didn't fare to well in the tournament? What..

Idol: Hold on just a minute darling. My Idols might not have advanced in the tournament as solos but together they're a well oiled machine and there isn't three men in the AWA that can beat my united champions! And that's a fact Jack!

Champagne Slam promos

Shawn Michaels: Shawn Michaels! AWA World champion! Boy, does that have a great ring to it. Bossman, you couldn't beat me on my worst day. I'm taking care of you and then it's time to get what I deserve, the AWA world title!

Big Bossman: Law, order and justice is what being a champion is all about! I came here to win the world title and that's what I'm going to do. Shawn Michaels! You're about to serve hard time!

Nelson: Fans, you will see a new AWA world champion crowned at Champagne Slam. Next week we will hear from the remaining contenders including Gerry Morrow and the immortal Hulk Hogan, I can...

Boos as Tommy Rich walks out.

Rich: Hold up Larry. You, me and all these idiots out here know there's only one name worth mentioning when it comes to the AWA world title. I'm talking about Tommy 'Wildfire' Rich! Hey, I never lost that title to begin with, so I really am the undisputed world champ. But whatever, I'll be a good boy and just win it back at Champagne Slam. I hear I'll be facing that wannabe champ Chump Hogan in the first round.

Nelson: You are correct. (smirks) Pretty big task ahead for you Wildfire.

Rich: Don't get smart with me Nelson! Listen up Chumpster! What exactly are you going to do when the Wildfire runs wild on you!

Nelson: (rolls his eyes) On that note, see you next week.

The next round of the World title tournament is loaded to the gills. Ya gotta figure that the winner of Hogan/Rich is the favorite.

Said tournament having taken up so much TV time lately, it was great seeing this week's show dedicated to tag team wrestling.

TCB stick their noses in the RPMs business allowing the Heavenly Bodies to escape with the gold.

Champagne Slam is such a great name for an event. I am very excited to see what's going to happen at the event.

The AWA is firing on all cylinders and is just all-around great work. Some of the matches I am very excited about seeing.

Shawn/Bossman will be a blast for sure.
Hogan/Rich is also a fun match to see.
Muraco/Kokina will be a sleeper fun match as well.

Very excited to see what's next for AWA.

The AWA Title tournament has been a success so far, with a lot of interesting matches. Shawn Michaels seems poised for a breakout year, although he would need to beat a lot of legends and big names to reach the mountain top.

Larry Nelson: Hello everybody and welcome to AWA Major League Wrestling. Champagne Slam is only one week away and a new AWA world champion will be crowned that night. We'll be hearing more comments from the remaining contenders, including the former world champ, Hulk Hogan. A lot of in ring action tonight. The British Bombers will face the Guerreros. Latin Desire will clash with TCB. And Gama Singh will defend the AWA TV title against the Equalizer. Ok, let's get to the action.

Latin Desire vs. TCB w/Jackie

alp.jpg.c31ef93a560ce94eac2a504931ee497b.jpglou.jpg.ee3c4415bf3a30023e39182d1b577fda.jpgwalker.jpg.605d4074b5734782331fc6ad8eae12cf.jpgstjones.jpg.28990895340ee7480625f5453f54de61.jpg

Thanks to Jackie's distraction, TCB get an early jump and take control. They put Lou down with a double back elbow smash. Walker follows with a hanging suplex and tags in Jones. Jones comes off the middle ropes with a knee drop 1..2..Kick Out. TCB continue to control until Walker goes for a back drop but Lou leapfrogs over and comes back with a flying dropkick. Lou rolls over and tags in Al.

Al pounds away on Walker, swings him to the ropes and puts him down with a flying forearm blast. Jones comes in but Al back drops him. Al tags in Lou, they swing Walker to the ropes and double dropkick him down. Lou covers 1..2..Jones breaks it. Things escalate into a pier six brawl. Jackie gets on the apron. The Ref is distracted with her.

Cheers as the RPMs hit the ring! They pound away on Jones and hurl him over the top rope. RPMs head out. This leaves Walker all alone as Al executes his helicopter drop. Lou picks up Walker and hits a bridging back suplex. The Ref runs over and counts 1..2..3! Jackie's yelling at the Ref but he doesn't really listen.

Nell: The Hangman's time has come. Now, more than ever, the AWA needs a champion of his caliber. Tommy Jammer, unfortunately you're the next poor soul in our way. You have a carefree spirit because you're lost. You will meet your demise at Champagne Slam. I do have pity for the winners that night because they will have to face the reckoning. Next week, everybody will know the truth. The Hangman is for real.

jammer.jpg.31114f9748d43ebe0e6ea6b6c23ae73a.jpg

Tommy Jammer: Since SuperClash, I have never been more focused in my life. Nell had some ominous words for me but let me enlighten you Nell. If I'm surfing the beaches in Cali and wipe out, I get back on the board and ride that next wave brother. I've rode the biggest waves in the world and I'm going to ride the wave all the way to the world title! Hangman, I'm going through you to get there.

konan2.jpg.b4fd5e8eeb6d471f9ebd3646bb44ec02.jpg

Konnan: I've already proven I'm the greatest wrestler to come out of Mexico and now I'm going to prove I'm the best wrestler in the AWA! It's my time and I'm taking it. Leo Burke, you're not in my league. You're washed up, you're getting old. You're going down and I'm the one who will be wearing the world title at the end of the night! It's my time!

leo.jpg.58f63c753bdcd84a011e3c74e6d9a6f1.jpg

Leo Burke: The young guys always love underestimating me but yet here I am, in the thick of the world title hunt. Who knows, this might be my last shot for the world title. Which is why I've been training harder than ever. Konnan says it's his time. I disagree, It's my time!

blaze.jpg.ce1c2e0c2280598a90a5541eeccbc61d.jpg

Bobby Blaze: Everybody's calling me the underdog and I'm ok with that. The odds have always been against me but I thrive on that. Gerry Morrow seems more interested in his issues with Hulk Hogan. Big mistake Morrow because Bobby Blaze is coming in full throttle and you're going to have to deal with that.

The British Bombers vs. The Guerreros

This feud's been heating up and it shows tonight. As soon as the bell rings, both teams brawl to the outside and get counted out. They continue to fight into the commercial break.

Commercial Break

The Bunkhouse Boys vs. Neil Jordan and Trent Watkins

Bunkhouse Boys pummel their opponents and finish things off with a spiked piledriver!

Hold on!

Dick Slater and Ron Garvin hit the ring and give the Bunkhouse Boys a pounding. The Boys roll out of the ring and stagger their way up the aisle. Slater and Garvin go to ringside.

Slater: Those boys don't know what they're dealing with!

Commercial Break

Nelson: I'm here with Tommy Rich, who apparently has something to say.

tommy.jpg.3df03030a01d7e69bfbf8ecf64dcb877.jpg

Rich: Watch it Larry. I don't like your tone. You need to show respect to the real AWA world champion. This tournament is just a stupid formality. At Champagne Slam, I'm beating up that imposter Chump Hogan and then I'm winning the battle royal to get back what I never lost in the first place, the AWA world title.

Boos as Gerry Morrow walks out.

morrow3.jpg.ad197ccbcd3815e1a52841ba4fa0aeff.jpg

Morrow: Mr. Rich, I would like to discuss business with you in private. I think you will be very pleased.

Rich: Gerry, you're a class act. Lead the way.

Morrow and Rich leave.

Nelson: I can't imagine what that is all about but I don't like it one bit.

Equalizer grabs Gama's head and tosses him across the ring. Gama staggers up and falls back against the turnbuckles. Equalizer charges in with a high knee but Gama falls down and out of the way as Equalizer crashes knee first into the turnbuckles.

Both men slowly rise. Gama dropkicks Equalizer into the corner. Gama shakes the cobwebs, hops up and monkey flips Equalizer over. Gama goes to the top rope. Equalizer staggers up with a limp as Gama nails him with a missile dropkick. Gama then applies the Indian Deathlock and wrenches away. Equalizer submits.

Gama holds his TV title high as the fans cheer.

Hulk Hogan is standing in front of an AWA banner.

hogan.jpg.7dd58c1b2a5ffc447a19d220c0ecf98d.jpg

Hogan: It all comes down to Champagne Slam. I've scaled and conquered Mount AWA before and I'm on the verge of doing it again. Oh yea brother, Hulkamania has suffered some setbacks. First from that no good Ric Flair and his horsemen goons. The Hulkamaniacs prevailed at War Games but there was another dirty dog lying in the weeds. The dirtiest, lowest piece of scum on the earth, Gerry Morrow. Hulkamania was faced with another band of goons but they didn't finish the job! Here I am, heading to Champagne Slam and the chance to get the world title back. Hulk Hogan has one goal and one goal only, the regain the AWA world title brother! Tommy Rich! I've been hearing you run your mouth and I'll be more than happy to shut it, beat you and steamroll over you to get to that battle royal. And Gerry Morrow, you better pray we don't cross paths at Champagne Slam because if we do, Hulkamania is going to run wild on you like I've never ran wild before. At the end of the night, Hulkamania will be standing strong on top of Mount AWA!

Good win by the Perez Boys with a little help from their "friends". Well, maybe not their friends but it all worked out in their favor. Pretty sure this won't sit well with Jackie and TCB.

I have to think that Hulk Hogan in 1991 is the "Cream of the AWA Crop" and is going to walk out of there as the champion unless there are some shenanigans going on.

With Gerry Morrow being a "Persona Non Grata" in the AWA that he is, you would think they would rename the Champagne Slam?

Lastly, I find it funny that the American Wrestling Association really is an International hub featuring so many stars representing Canada, Mexico, Japan, England, Puerto Rico.

Looking forward to Champagne Slam but I might be more interested to see what Morrow had to say to Wildfire!  Very interesting!

I believe Hogan to be the favorite but this is wrestlnig... can't wait to find out!

Larry Nelson: Hello everybody and welcome to Champagne Slam. Tonight you'll see a new AWA world champion crowned. After qualifying to get here, 16 men will compete in the next round of tournament matches with the winners advancing to the battle royal. The winner of the battle royal will be the AWA world champion. Also, Carlos Colon defends the International title against the international legend, Mil Mascaras. Ron Garvin and Dick Slater defend the AWA world tag titles against the Bunkhouse Boys. It should be a tremendous night of action. We do have a special bonus match that has been added and will be kicking things off right now.  I'll let Ken Resnick take it from here, so let's get up to the ring.

Champagne Slam baby, oh yeah!

Idol's big mouth wrote a check his Idols couldn't cash.

The Bunkhouse Boys weren't rough enough to take the belts off the champs.

Luckily for everyone, it seems Mascaras was in a mood to do business tonight.

Rich and Morrow pull one hell of a cheap trick to keep the hulkster out of the main event.

I will say that the final battle royal looks basically like what I expected. Rich with the lightening quick exit was something the crowd needed. Boss man and Neil are gonna have some fun brawls. Kokina proves to be the ultimate dark horse winner. I don't think anyone was expecting him to pull it out.

I absolutely loved this show.

awesome work. I can’t wait to see Hogan get his hands on Morrow that’s going to be a sold out show anywhere.

Kokina winning was a shocker but it’s the type of win that is going to be interesting to see who is the next challenger. I have my suspicion but I can’t wait to see who steps up to the plate.

Kokina building is going to be huge... pun intended. Hogan has his sights set on things for the forseeable future. I was hoping to see Kerry get his run but alas. AWA continues to be a force in our world of Wrestling!
