spaldoni
AWA TV @ The Hammond Center 4-12-89 Larry Nelson: Hello everybody and welcome to AWA Major League Wrestling. We're only one week away from our next big pay per view, Champagne Slam. That event will take place inside Market Square Arena. You will see five 10 man tag team elimination matches. On that night you'll also see Stan Hansen face Dory Funk Jr. Terry Gordy will take on Hulk Hogan, in an explosive match up. And Jumbo Tsuruta defends the AWA world title against El Canek. What an incredible event that will be. We've got a great show lined up tonight. Listen to this main event. Paul Orndorff teams with the Bruisers to take on Larry Cameron, Buzz Sawyer and Kokina. (deep breath) ok, let's get to the ring. Leo Burke vs. Dave Lavene Burke makes it look easy and wins the match with the sleeper. Burke is joined at ringside by his Champagne Slam teammates, Bill Kazmaier, Spike Huber and the Rose Cousins. Burke says they're not shook by the announcement of Vader coming in as a replacement for Doll. Burke says his team all has scores to settle and they will get settled at Champagne Slam. Commercial Break Sweet Dreams vs. Neil Jordan and Van Moore Sugar hits a missile dropkick on Moore as Dream follows with a jumping elbow drop for the win. Sweet Dreams are joined by their Champagne Slam teammates, Vinergy and Gary Young, along with the Vin man. Everybody is holding a broom. Nelson: What's with the brooms? Dream: At Champagne Slam, you're looking at the winners and it's going to be a clean sweep babay! They all start waving their brooms and laughing as Nelson shakes his head. Commercial Break 'Superstar' Bill Dundee vs. Todd Rooney Dundee is fired up tonight and wins the match with the Bombs Away. Nelson: Bill, at Champagne Slam you'll be teaming with Bob Armstrong, Iceman Parsons and the Fantastics to take on Austin Idol, Larry Zbyszko, AWA world tag champs the Guerreros and a man you've had several issues with TV champ Brian Adias. Dundee: Brian Adias! I've had your number and every time you've cheated and weaseled your way out of things. At Champagne Slam, I'm targeted you! I'm going to put you down and eliminate you as I help my team to victory. Have mercy! Commercial Break Highlights are shown of Big Van Vader demolishing wrestlers in Japan. Big Van Vader will be at Champagne Slam! 'The Fabulous One' Steve Keirn vs. Carl Kellerman Keirn wins the match with a reverse DDT. Nelson: Steve, at Champagne Slam you'll be teaming with Nikita Koloff, the Gunslingers and Carlos Colon. Your opponents will be Sgt. Slaughter, Chicky Starr, the Olympians and a man you wrestled here on TV a couple weeks ago, Tony St. Clair. Keirn: No doubt about it, there's going to be a lot of hate in that ring. Last time we met, old St. Clair pulled a fast one and got me. Listen up St. Clair, that wont happen again and at Champagne Slam, I'm going to be all over you boy. You claim to be the best, but after I get through with you, you'll be simply defeated. Commercial Break Brian Adias is standing on a Hollywood lot. He's wearing a pink tank top, sunglasses and has the TV title on his shoulder. Adias: I'm taking time out from my demanding schedule to address a couple issues. First is you Hulk Hogan. How dare you promote your movie on AWA television last week. Hollywood is my town and you better stay in your own lane and keep out of mine. I'm not going to tell you again. Next up is Champagne Slam. Blockbuster Brian Adias will be there and so will the ratings. I've heard Bill Dundee is still crying about all the butt whippings I've given him. Well Billy, keep crying, because you got another one coming at Champagne Slam. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to give the director my rewritten script. (Brian looks at his script) Oh yea much better. Commercial Break Terry 'Bam Bam' Gordy vs. Ray Glader Gordy destroys his opponent and wins the match with the Oklahoma Stampede. Afterwards, Gordy picks up his opponent and clamps on the Asian Spike! Gordy then hurls him out of the ring. Nelson: Come on Terry, all that was unnecessary. Gordy: Hogan! I hope you're watching brother because that's nothing compared to what I'm going to do to you at Champagne Slam! While you're out promoting your little movie, I'm kicking teeth in, stomping heads and kicking ass! You're on my tracks and the Bam Bam freight train is going to run you over! When I'm finished with you, they'll be peeling you off the canvas! Gordy storms out of there. Nelson: Fans, you wont want to miss that one. Right now let's hear some pre recorded comments from the Immortal Hulk Hogan. Hogan's lifting weights and stops. Hogan: I told everybody I was here to conquer Mount AWA. Well at Champagne Slam, Hulk Hogan starts his journey. I'm now faced with a monstrous obstacle in Terry Gordy. Oh, I've taken down monsters and beasts before and I've slayed the biggest dragons in wrestling. But now I'm faced with a challenge like never before. But let me tell you something brother, with the power of all my Hulkamaniacs behind me, there's no challenge big enough that can stop Hulk Hogan. So, Terry Gordy, whatcha gonna do when the power of Hulkamania runs wild on you!!!! Commercial Break AWA Mid American Champ 'Mr. Wonderful' Paul Orndorff and The Bruisers vs. AWA Southern Champ 'Lethal' Larry Cameron/'Mad Dog' Buzz Sawyer and Kokina w/Skandor Akbar As you would expect this match quickly becomes a no contest. kevinmcfl
Again, I seem to keep falling behind here and I am sorry about that. I enjoyed all of the previews Champagne Slam as each feud was well built up. I like the idea of all the different groups tagging together in these elimination style matches. It allows you keep angles moving on or ending them if you wish. I loved the clean sweep for the fan favorites in the first bout. This sets the tone for the audience and gets them excited right away. Way to build up Vader in his bout. As the last man standing, he is off to a great start to be the big monster in the AWA! I had a feeling Hansen was going to win but wasn't sure. This was one of those matches of two legends and I would expect Dory to see the big picture here and would not be upset by Hansen going over. With Hansen, Vader, Hogan and some other big time names, AWA has main events for the next year lined up if you like. Nikita brawling with Sarge for the Double CO was smart. The fans got to see what they wanted and the angle stays white hot. Really smart. Hogan vs Bam Bam before the intermission... reminded me of some old Madison Square Garden and WWF events. I love this form of booking as it gives the fans a chance to recharge after the big one! I had a feeling Hogan was going over but you gave him some big time credibility with this one. I really like that the AWA has a place for some of the older guys like Armstrong and Dundee. AWA has gone World Wide but still understands some of its smaller markets and its original ties to places like Memphis and Canada. Jumbo vs El Canek... again, had a feeling the champ would come out on top but you have done so much with El Canek that I just wasn't sure. Great title match. Really enjoyed Champagne Slam.... Thanks for all you put into this one. It was a great read.
Autistic Dragon
Well, Vinnie and co were technically right in their prediction. Vader showing the AWA why he is The Man. Hansen wins the battle of the cowboys. Good idea preserving Nikita and Sarge. The Hulkster gets his first big win. The Bullet and the Superstar stand tall. Jumbo gets to take the world title home to Japan next month.

Control21
Very much enjoyed reading Champagne Slam. As always, you made the event come to life and the detail really makes it easy to imagine these matches happening in AWA in 1989. Good stuff! Big nights for Hulk Hogan and Jumbo Tsuruta, who seem to be on a collision course but Vader might have something to say about that. Looking forward to Title Night in Japan! Autistic Dragon
Los Guerreros aren't ready to step to their challengers just yet. Burke with a hard-fought win over Miller. Glamour Doll is ready to make Huber pay. Beaten by the High Chiefs then beat down by Sweet Dreams. Terrible night for the Rose's. Kokina looks ready to crush Hulkamania. Colon finally shuts Chicky up. Cameron and Orndorff are gonna throwdown with the reborn International title on the line. Busick has to get past his partner to get a TV title shot. Thankfully things stay professional between the Bruisers.
kevinmcfl
Fun week of TV for the AWA. I m going to start at the end of the show where I was sure that one of the Bruisers would turn on the other. Glad they didn't. I think these just adds to these two as being real men. They went at it tooth and nail and both were able to shake after the match. Enjoyed this one a lot. Just love the Brenda-Morrow combo. While Brenda is all heel and Morrow might not be loved, he seems to play it down the middle for the most part. If I was watching, I would hate them while watching but about an hour later I would be praising Morrow for his actions. Well done. I am very interested to see who goes over in the Orndorff-Cameron feud. Both seem one big win away from moving pretty far up that ladder. Hulk-Kokina in Japan--- $$$$. Love the Guerreros vs Dundee and Armstrong. I really think that the Guerreros in real life were pretty underrated. Whenever I watched them as a kid I always were amazed at their skill. To me, you have turned Carlos Colon into the Tito Santana of the AWA. He just gets it done night after night. While he is not your top guy, you know you are going to get a great match from him night after night. Prior to getting into this hobby, I had never heard of Dream Machine. Now he is truly one of my favorites. Tonight was awesome with his "Sweet Dreams Baby" quote. Great week! Thanks for the fun read.

They're on a beach while some pretty women are shining up their National title belts. Rheingans: As you can see, thanks to our epic performance at Champagne Slam, we're enjoying a well deserved vacation. Champions like ourselves should enjoy the spoils. No doubt about it, we earned it. Patera: And you know something Brad? We'll be on an extended vacation because at Title Night in Japan, we'll be defending our prized titles against the San Juan Nobodies. Is that the best the AWA could come up with? Well, at least Japan has good food. The Olympians laugh and sip their drinks. Rheingans then looks at the women and tells them they missed a spot. Commercial Break Tony 'Simply the Best' St. Clair vs. Todd Rooney Tina Turner's Simply the Best plays as St. Clair enters the ring wearing a gold sequence robe. He takes off his robe and has on shiny gold wrestling pants and gold boots. Nothing but the best for him. I own Japan and at Title Night I'm going to own you and own the AWA world title! Nelson: Ray, I think the world champion might have his hands full with Big Van Vader in Japan. Stevens: First off, don't ever try and overshadow the AWA world champion Jumbo Tsuruta by mentioning Hulk Hogan's name before we come out. Got it! And next, you better show some respect and call the AWA world champion by his name. Nelson: I apologize. The AWA world champion, Jumbo Tsuruta Stevens: That's better. Autistic Dragon
Billy Graham should make an exciting addition to the AWA commentary team. Brandi cashes in his reward on a hot new ride while St Clair is holding onto his. Vinnie & Gary just made a big mistake. Huber calls out Doll. Sammartino looks to live up to his father's legacy. Parsons scores a big win. The Olympians don't appear to be taking the Saints seriously. Sarge launches a preemptive strike. You can just tell Cameron has already picked out a spot on his mantle for the International title. Nelson really has a bad habit of bringing up Hogan right before interviewing Jumbo. Regardless Vader & Stevens trade some harsh words ahead of their clash in Japan.

What you should be thinking about is this monster right here, Kokina! I'm telling you right now Hogan, you won't be attending any premiers after Kokina destroys you. Hulkamania is a myth, a fairy tale. And this fairytale will end sadly and badly for you and all your so called Hulkamaniacs. Hogan: Well let me tell you something Akbar! Hulk Hogan has the power of all these Hulkamaniacs out here and there's no force strong enough to take us down! Kokina lets out a monstrous scream then puts Hogan down with a clothesline! Akbar is yelling something to Kokina. Kokina hoists Hogan up and Samoan Drops him down! Kokina swings off the ropes and hits a big splash! Akbar: Hulkamania is officially dead! rainmakerrtv
Remembering that Larry Z and Big Jim feuded on the West Coast in the early days of the project Can't wait to see how Hulk's feud with Kokina plays out.
Autistic Dragon
Busick being offended by how Adias has been carrying himself as TV champion is exactly what I needed in this build. The Rose's even the score with Sweet Dreams. Graham really puts over the Iceman on his quest for gold. Chicky with a nice flex. Orndorff gets Pearl Harbored. Bid Jim takes a bad trip to Larry Land. Adias is right, I honestly hadn't noticed how long he'd been champion. A lot of long reigns in the AWA. Idol trying to stir the pot. Nikita is ready for war! The Fantastic earn a title shot. Kokina shows Hogan exactly what he's up against.
kevinmcfl
I think the AWA has done great things with its announce team and now you added Superstar! Love it. Between his Hippie Vibe, Brenda's good looks and bad attitude and Morrow's cool accent, and Killer Ken, you have me hooked with each promo. Also, I think you have made your shows so interesting with all the promos and video tapes-- the new and "muscular Sammartino, the Olympians on the beach... etc. Whenever I watch old time wrestling shows on youtube, I tend to fast-forward through the matches and focus on the announcers and the wrestler's promos. Great job with all your great extras! Between Sgt. and Koloff, Cameron and Orndorff and Jumbo and Vader, you have 3 huge main events for any show you want. Looking forward to seeing how these all playout. I do wonder if Dundee was honest that he is happy with the Bullet... always love these feuds with the stars of the early 80's fighting to stay on top. Hogan getting crushed by Kokina had that WWF feel in that everyone doubts Hogan can overcome the huge opponent placed in front of him and then some how Hogan survives. While we all had an idea of what would happen, it paid a whole lot of bills for Vince! I'm thinking you know a good formula when you see it... enjoy Hulkamania! Also love the Fantatics vs The High Chiefs. This is the type of feud that could go 3 months of wrestling each other every night all over the territory and it would never get old! Love my weekly dose of the AWA!

Now that you've finished your issues with Chicky Starr, what's next for you? Colon: I have to be honest Larry. Yes, my neck is one hundred percent. However, I still have horrible flashbacks of SuperClash when Buzz Sawyer snapped my neck with the chain. I need to get over this mental block and there's only one way to do that. I have to fight Buzz Sawyer one more time. We've defeated each other and we've literally beaten the souls out of each other. We have unfinished business and we need to end this once and for all. His hair is slicked back into a ponytail. He's wearing a red sequence jacket. "A friend of mine said Terry, you remind me of a rooster. You're dominant, arrogant, cocky and bad. I thought about that for a long time and realized, he's absolutely right. I literally am the cock of the walk and no doubt I can back it all up in the ring. So, AWA get ready because the Red Rooster Terry Taylor is coming! Commercial Break David Sammartino vs. Carl Kellerman Sammartino looks sharp and crisp and gets a good reception from the fans. Sammartino wins the match with the brain buster. Nelson: David Sammartino, it's great to have you here in the AWA. I know you've had a bit of a transformation. David: Thank you very much Larry. As I've said, I made a lot of mistakes because I was immature and just plain dumb. I'm here to make a name for myself while also living up to my father's name. It's time to carry on the Sammartino legacy. Massive boos as Larry Zbyszko strolls out. Zbyszko: I can't believe my eyes. Is this Bruno's boy? Well, look at you, all grown up and ready to embrace Daddy's name. Why I just think that's wonderful. Nelson: Alright Larry, that's enough. Zbyszko: Shut up Spudhead! What? Bruno's boy can't speak for himself? David: Look Larry, I just got here and I'm not looking for any trouble. Zbyszko: Wow, Daddy would be so proud. kevinmcfl
So many great things here tonight. I love the mental block with Colon needing Sawyer back in the ring. Very creative. I never liked the Red Rooster idea but I think you can pull it off. Taylor and the "cock of the walk" arrogance reminds me I how much you got me to hate Greg Gagne. Looking forward to hating Taylor. Larry Z. bringing up Bruno... awesome. Looking forward to this one. Great use of your entire roster. AWA has some bog events coming up... Night of Champions in Japan and the WrestleRock. I can't wait to see all the chaos. Speaking of big events... Boot Camp match... Sgt. vs Nikita... on TV.... this would be talked about forever!!!
