Its great to see him back in wrestling, and I am very excited to see him with Don Callis. Don was my fave heel commentator in recent years, with his Impact and NJPW runs (plus his AEW guest spots). I have always been a big Mauro Ranallo fan so those two together feels like a bit of a dream team. Very excited overall for MLP.

For some reason I hear The Littlest Hobo theme song when reading your post and looking at this image.

Actually, MLP delivered two absolutely awesome main events (much, much better than the Takeshita match against Ricochet at Full gear). The cards had its ups and downs (TAFKA Jinder Mahal was *GODAWFUL*, seriously I don't think I've seen someone so bad in an eternity), but mostly pretty entertaining. The mix of talents from everywhere surely added a lot. Sadly this was the last time to see El-Phantasmo before he announced he had cancer. Hopefully things turn out good for the guy.

The elephant in the room here is of course Mauro's announcing. It's funny. The first night, I thought, "Well, he really isn't as loud or annoying as I remembered him to be", and the good things about his game still wer every much in effect. And then the second night, after a few match, I was like "Damn, he's beginning to annoy the hell out of me".

I felt Mauro actually did a good job reminding folks that this was a 58 year old in there. He was the voice of reason in the booth.

Say his name and he appears !

I wonder if the MLP shows in 2025, whatever they will be, will keep on bringing him. He and Callis together sure brought credibility and professionalism to the booth. Callis seemingly can work with *anyone* and make it work.

Skipped the last previous two shows (although they're on Youtube now), but the next one doesn't look half bad on paper. Serena Deeb vs Miyu Yamashita, Kylie Rae vs Gisele Shaw (although Rae is a WWEID, there's no way Gisele doesn't win there), Micheal Oku vs Speedball vs Gabe Kidd. Well, of course Mauro is still announcing, so there's that, but hey, Callis is there too.

Mauro is still announcing

Wise decision.

Best of his generation, easily.

One of the best of all time, really.

Damn, the title of this thread is so cursed...

But yeah, the MLP project still looks interesting. If anyone Canadian was released by WWE, you can sure D'Amore will have a try at them.

Watched the first night of Mayhem since why not. All jokes aside, Mauro is fucking unbearable. Making a useless, totally unrelated reference every two minutes (he's what we call in French a prouveur, yeah, we get the fucking point, you have a whole lot of REFERENCES) and worst of all, *interrupting his co-host all the time* I swear Veda Scott has not been able to finish two sentences in a row. Add to that the constant screaming. Jeez.

Apart from this, some good stuff (mostly thanks to the external talent from AEW, NJPW and NOAH), but holy shit, a TAFKA Baron Corbin (as Mauro actually called him several times) match against Bram from the NWA was one hell of a lame-ass main event (not *bad* per say, but boring and basic, with a really lame finish). Don't see the point of working with the cursed Corgan's NWA (for fuck's sake, Bram). And Bishop Dyer may be a bit better than Baron Corbin as I remembered him for years ago, but I don't need to see another match of him, ever.

Basically I wish AEW would sign Gisele Shaw, really (but I thought the same thing already when she was in IMPACT).

prouveur

I looked up this French word, and it roughly translates in English to voice of a generation.

Jerome and I may disagree with a thousand things about wrestling, but we are firmly united on this.

I was watching the ROH/MLP show and he just drowns out the action. It's not additive. It's distracting. He's so busy calling every move with equal excitement and no thought to storytelling or what's the point of any of it is. When he tries to explain what he think is going on, he's way off base. Callis would set up Ian for a line or a comment on something and Mauro would shout "shotgun dropkick!" over them.

It literally made it HARDER for me to tell what was going on. I had to rewind multiple times just to try to figure out how the action had gotten to a certain point because Mauro's commentary was so distracting.

I'd love to say this is a bit or it's me using hyperbole, but it's really not. It's the most unpleasant pro wrestling watching experience I've had in a long time and made it almost impossible for me to watch. I've never encountered anything quite like it honestly. It's like trying to count to a thousand while someone else is shouting random numbers as loud as they can. You may do ok for the first hundred and forty numbers, but at a certain point, it becomes too much.

He is enthusiastic and doesn't feel overproduced or plastic but it's exhausting and more detrimental than any commentator I've ever come across, even current WWE buzzwords and what not.

Just repeating my post from 2024 because it's once again relevant.

Mauro really is great when it comes to really put over the emotional moments, but the problem is he seems to thing EVERY moment is an emotional moment.

In all seriousness, I wonder if that's because of his bipolar disorder.

Mauro was good on commentary before he joined NXT. I recall hearing him during PRIDE, Strikeforce, etc. and not being annoyed by him. Once he began working weekly TV in NXT he got annoying as he got himself some attention because of the catchphrase. I partially blame the NXT fans for that as they kept applauding him for it (they were also constantly clamoring for the unfunny Bugez air guitar gimmick). I recall him even asking if he should throw in the catchphrase during commentary because sure, that's what mattered. Also, his nonstop unrelated cultural reference one liners get tiresome, too. They have him do commentary for PBC cards and I check out once he begins interrupting the other commentators to throw in these lame one liners.

That last big boxing show that Netflix had featured him on commentary, and he was just unbearable all night long. One of the other commentators was a female whose name I can't remember and it felt like every single time she was starting to make a point about anything, he'd start screaming like an idiot or quip in with something ridiculous like "much like the Wu-Tang Clan, Jake Paul is nothing to fuck with" and it went on that way for like 6 solid hours. Someone, somewhere (probably his Mom) keeps telling him that he is clever and creative, and they really, really need to stop!

See, that's the number two things we can firmly agree on.

And well yes. Mauro. Holy fuck. I did watch the show. I swear, it took him 2 minutes before he loudly interrupted Ian. Good thing is that my brain works a certain way that allows me to just mentally block out stuff, so I did end up enjoying the show. Deonna vs Gisele was such a cool throwback to the cool IMPACT years, and you could see how happy Deonna was. But yeah, from time to time, I did hear Mauro again, screaming some shit over the other guys and overselling everything, which BTW kinda forces his co-worker to scream too, which make everything worse, and I was going "man, WTF".
