  1. WWE own Watts' tapes but these matches still happened in the Sam Houston coliseum in Paul Boesch's NWA Houston Promotion. Watts & Boesch had a deal where Houston was supplied Mid-South talent for it's Friday shows along with other people that Boesch would bring in outside of the Mid-South roster. The weekly TV in Houston was a mix of Mid-South TV and Paul Boesch interviews & highlights of the Sam Houston coliseum show from the week before.

I don't know, I'm an 80s mark but I would take Bret/Austin over all of those.
  3. And with that comment I had to check out Gino vs. Ox. This starts with Gino wearing a shirt that say "I broke Jose Lothario's arm" while he talks trash on the house mic about how he's going to break Jose's neck on the 19th. Jose comes out from the back and attacks him and rips off the shirt! They brawl for a bit and then Ox Baker comes in while the referees are trying to get Jose out of the ring and now he's on Gino before the match officially starts. The crowd is anything but sympathetic to Gino's plight. That punch where Ox pulls Gino out of the corner by his tights and then punches him in the stomach to drive him back in is cool and someone needs to steal that. I don't know if I would say Ox is "better" than Ivan but he definitely seemed to try harder in this match than Ivan did. This is a pretty fun match although I enjoyed the Jose/Gino pre-match stuff more than the match itself. Maybe I should finally get around to watching that Jose/Gino Texas Death Match.
  4. Just watched the Gino Hernandez vs. Ivan Putski match refereed by notorious Southwest referee/jobber Juan Reynosa! I actually enjoyed this for what it was, but I wouldn't recommend it. There is a whole lot of "nothing" going on for large portions of this match with Gino avoiding Putski. But I enjoyed the story of "Ivan is too strong for Gino to put any holds on" so I still dug this. The finish was pretty awful though which definitely keeps me from recommending this when the match itself is already very borderline.
  5. Just watched Andre the Giant vs. Tank Patton which I'm pretty sure is from 1/2/81 based on the Houston results thread. This is a lot of fun, Andre is still fairly mobile here and it's fun to watch him bully the big Tank Patton around. 2 out of 3 falls and Andre wins the first fall by DQ after Tank uses his cast. Pissed off Andre in the 2nd fall is awesome to watch. If you're an Andre fan (and you should be) then you will enjoy this.
  6. I would much rather watch two 10 minute *** matches over a **** match that goes 20.
  7. shoe I think the Butch Reed vs. JYD Ghetto Street Fight match is new? I have only ever seen it clipped up.
  8. It's just more evidence that Dixie Carter really doesn't "get" wrestling.

This is another guy I have to put in the Roman Reigns category where I think it's quite likely he'll be a top 100 wrestler in a few more years but right now there just isn't enough on the resume. He's done an amazing job of growing as an overall performer since getting called up from NXT, where I don't think anyone was really raving about his work. Since then it's been about 16 months of him getting better seemingly every month. He's been presented as a tough brute heel since his debut but he's somehow one of the best guys at long term selling and appearing vulnerable at the right moments. His matches with Cena weren't as good as what I was expecting but he seems to have rebounded quite nicely now with the recent triple threat on Raw and the Cesaro match from Smackdown. If he keeps improving the way he has so far, he could end up being an all time great. If he just stays at the level he is now, he's still going to be pretty darn good.

    WWE TV 7/13 - 7/19

Unless Ryback is going to be gone over 2 months, I don't see them pulling the IC title off him considering that JUST happened. Unless he has a really awful staph infection I would imagine he should be back within 4-6 weeks.
  12. I just watched the Butch Reed vs. Kamala Lumberjack match that was on the new update. This was a really good match, much better than their other match on the site although the finish still kind of sucks. But they kept it short and sweet and Butch Reed's comeback on Kamala was white hot. Butch Reed "lays those wallops in" indeed Mr. Boesch. I realized at the end that I'd seen it before on a Butch Reed comp so it's not new but I enjoyed it on 2nd go round.
  13. Ok, I just edited it in. I thought there were 9 but could only find 7. They moved all the interviews into the matches section for some reason.
  14. I can understand them fighting back against people trying to run shows near WrestleMania & SummerSlam. But the thing about trying to lock ROH out of certain arenas seems like way more than that.

  16. I don't really understand that point of WWE going after ROH though. I mean it's not like they haven't benefited from ROH being around. The only thing I can even think of is if this is like a Vince experiment to see if HHH is capable of doing a "head to head" promotion war with NXT vs. ROH.
  17. Current list of matches I have watched from NWAClassics.com that I have watched and whether I would recommend checking them out Ted DiBiase vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan - Loser Leaves Town, Tuxedo Cage with Coal Miner's Glove On A Pole Match - You should buy a subscription just to see this match! Buddy Landell vs Butch Reed - Shoe Shine Match - I can't recommend this enough for all the post match stuff. Some of the most enjoyable wrestling "BS" you'll ever see. If this doesn't make you laugh out loud then....well it damn well SHOULD! Little Tokyo vs. Little Coco - I am a mark for midget matches from the 80s but I still think this should be enjoyable for everyone. Watch this. Rock N Roll Express vs. Buddy Landell & Masao Ito - This is a really fun RNR Express match. It's formula but their formula was great and Landell & Ito make an interesting team. Butch Reed vs. Dutch Mantel - Great performance by both guys even if the match was only good. If that makes sense. Still definitely worth your time. Mark Reagan vs. Pat Rose - This is actually a pretty darn good match. Watch this to see how good Pat Rose was at getting 7 minutes out of a green babyface that someone wanted him to make look good. Dick Murdoch vs. Al Perez - Another match where a veteran gets a good match out of a young guy who might not be that good. I enjoyed this, I would say it's worth the 8-9 minutes of your time. Sonny King vs. Masao Ito - I enjoyed this although it was a bit slow at times. I like Masao Ito and Sonny King is perfectly acceptable here. Borderline but I still would recommend it. Magnum TA vs. Butch Reed - I'd like to recommend this one to you, but I can't. Just not enough meat in this match for how long it was. Butch Reed vs. Kamala - I usually like these two against each other but after Reed kicked his ass at the beginning this one just felt like one long Kamala nerve hold. Finish stunk also. Not recommended. Jim Duggan, Junkyard Dog & Tito Santana vs. Butch Reed, Krusher Krushev & Nikolai Volkoff - I was so hype to see this match. It's really not very good. It's elimination style and all the eliminations kind of suck. I think that's everything I've seen so far. If you want me to watch a match that's up and review it shout them out. I have only watched 11 matches so far but I already feel like I got my $9 worth for the month and as you can see, it's not like I have been picking the biggest main event matches to watch.
  18. I would argue that Brock DID need that rub because he didn't have the same aura he has now before he beat Undertaker. He kind of did when he first came back but he got watered down with the loss to Cena and the shitty HHH feud.
  19. That's a very well done troll then, especially the stuff about the letters.
  20. If they had not stop-started with Drew McIntyre and continued him along his "Chosen One" path then he's a guy I think could have benefited from retiring Shawn Michaels but the timing was off because he hadn't been around long enough by WM26.
  21. I agree with you that it would be nice to see that but it really requires special circumstances and I'd rather see Shawn Michaels retired by The Undertaker than have them rush someone into that spot who wasn't ready and have it negatively impact their career because they have to face a crowd backlash. I mean look at how many problems Roman Reigns has had just from winning a Royal Rumble that people wanted Daniel Bryan to win. That's not even close to the scale of the backlash that I think would have happened to a young guy who had retired HBK or ended Undertaker's streak.
  22. I think the "not too many" part isn't the reason that wrestling has a tough time creating new stars. When I asked how many times has it actually happened, I didn't just mean WWE. Even in the territory days top stars usually just wrestled until they didn't have gas left in the tank, there really aren't any "young gun retires an old star" scenarios that I can think of off the top of my head. It feels like an idea that's gotten idealized in people's heads as the way everyone should retire but it's not like there's really much of a precedent.
  23. I think people discount the idea of a fan backlash in that situation. Everyone idealizes the young guy retiring the old star but how many times has it actually happened?

    WWECW

It was more that he was still so drunk on the ECW kool aid that he had to come back to represent the 3 letters despite the fact that it really wasn't much of a continuation especially after the first few months.
