[1990-02-18-NWA-Main Event] Ric Flair & Arn Anderson vs Rock & Roll Express
Bix replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
I don't have the MX scrapbook (which discusses these shows because of Cornette's booking job) with me for obvious reasons but I think that at least one show was the highest audience since 1985. It's a bit weird that Flair-Pillman is the commonly cited trivia about this weekend when this episode of Main Event that aired 24 hours later actually did a bigger rating. This match was booked with the idea that it would evoke the peak of JCP in '86, and it paid off with a great rating. -
Quite the night for USA Network to go out for everyone in the hotel. I haven't seen the angle yet, but it's Lawler, if he had any issues he'd quit. From what I've read it doesn't sound that bad. The video of the CPR & defibrillation, though...how was that remotely fucking necessary?

They did, in fact, show up on Friday Night Videos in real life.

Well yeah but the point was that UFC ppvs are just as exspensive as WWE's & just as easy to steal but they still got great numbers. UFC is a live sporting event. WWE PPVs are weird premium episodes of a TV show.

Since Loss made sure to spell it "Joisey," it should be pointed out for those who haven't seen this yet that her name is, in fact spelled Dawna, not a joke about her accent.

According to Cornette in the MX scrapbook, the Flair standing tall finish was because Herd was upset that Flair "couldn't even beat Bobby Eaton [of all people]" in their previous match a few weeks earlier.

2005 was too late. Sure, there wasn't the complete lack of room (in terms of allocating funds) for new cable networks that weren't built on major sports franchises that we have in 2012, but: - They had just launched WWE 24/7 as a subscription VOD service BECAUSE they knew getting a typical cable clearance would be incredibly difficult. - The failed hardball negotiation with Viacom embarrassed them when only USA would take Raw, and for a much less favorable deal than they got from Spike. On top of the WCW cancellation this led to the goal of the network as a back-up, though. They had already conceded that the network was unlikely AND they accidentally devalued WWE programming. They needed the right combination of a hot product and relative ease of getting clearances. That would've been 2001 at the latest, maybe 2003 if you relax the "hot product" requirement since that's when digital cable lineups started to stabilize. That's not even getting into how they didn't necessarily have the library to program a more interesting, diverse channel until the WCW purchase at the earliest, as that (along with the DVD boom) got them into buying other libraries and monetizing archival footage.

Nope, it's all pending toxicology results, which could take a few months.

[1990-03-10-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Jerry Lawler
Bix replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
What Loss said. If there's a title change in the Memphis half of the territory, don't assume it counts in Dallas unless it's explicitly mentioned on TV. As you'll see later in the year, they don't bother to mention The Snowman's existence on the syndicated show until he's been stripped of the title since the tournament was going to take up over a month of TV when Jarrett pulled out of Dallas.- 11 replies

Also: - Each fall is referred to as a "Caida." Primera Caida, Segunda Caida, and if necessary, Tercera Caida. - Modern AAA subverts this, but title matches are, traditionally, their own "style." A singles title match, regardless of the participants, will usually be very technical. Someone like Perro Aguayo in a title match will be much different from Perro Aguayo in other matches, especially hair & hair vs mask matches. - Hair vs Hair, Mask vs Mask, & Mask vs Hair matches are known as "Luchas de Apuestas," or stakes matches. So if you see a Lucha fan talking about "Apuestas matches," he's talking about hair and mask matches in general. - There are a lot of production quirks that may annoy you, like endless replays between falls and crowd shots out of nowhere.

Showtime, Strikeforce, Rounday Rousey to UFC.

Bold prediction: Pat Healy will beat Gilbert Melendez for the title. It's a lame duck final show and there has to be an upset title change. Melendez losing fucks up potential UFC matchmaking the most. Well, unless Diaz is UFC champion by then, like Raging Noodles said. Then Melendez would just be one of many guys in the giant logjam at 155 anyway. -
[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Tony Atlas, Paul E. Dangerously and Austin Idol

Leopard Mask's identity has always been a complete mystery to me and everything I can find online just shows it as an alternate gimmick for Ted Petty, who's obviously Cheetah Kid here. I've never heard of Grunge teaming with him before Heyman put them together as Public Enemy (the idea was to put Petty together with his favorite opponent as a new tag team) and I doubt Grunge was ever that skinny. Who was around back then that would fit?- 10 replies

Here's something I've been thinking about with all of the Linda campaign spending/network/XFL talk: JDW has accurately pointed out in the past that the network would've been a much better idea than the XFL as a big spending project. It would have been a much easier sell in the few years immediately following the IPO than it is now, as digital cable was first emerging then and there were plenty of spots for new cable networks. But is it realistic to say they should've known it should be one of their big moves instead of the XFL/restaurant/hotel (at least they made a profit on that even if it never opened)/etc? Until Jamie Kellner cancelled WCW (during the XFL season), there wasn't really any indication that there would be a need for a WWF Network as a backup. They were still within the window of taking advantage of the cable companies moving to digital and had just diversified their tape library, but had already gone through a bunch of failed non-wrestling projects even if this was a much better idea than those were.

Time to quote that Meltzer post from 2009 again:

This hotline, or at least the toll free 800 number backdoor to it, existed well into the mid '90s. You couldn't win anything from it, but...yeah.

FWIW, Cornette calls this "the phantom angle" in the MX scrapbook. Promos were shot with a raspy voiced Pillman talking about his childhood throat cancer, but they didn't air because Jim Barnett wanted to save the angle for later when Pillman was a bigger star or something. The announcers were told to completely ignore that aspect of the angle.

I'm talking about the creepy puffy nipples. ... What? I read about it being a telltale sign of steroid abuse in old Observers. Really! Seriously though, look at that horrifying photo of Daivari that's been making the rounds for a few months. He has the same thing going on:
-
It's one thing to see Tommy Rich in good shape, it's another to see Tommy Rich showing visible side effects of steroid use.
-
While the best photo in the LBOA feature is this: My favorite one in the gallery that's not from the match is this, which the board won't let me embed. When and where the hell was Tommy Rich all juiced up like that?

Even better, they did an oral history piece about the match: http://www.wwe.com/classics/last-battle-of...sawyer-26062508

When I did the pre-release review of the Punk DVD set, I made sure to do a custom Bit.ly URL because I figured it would work better than Dave transcribing the whole direct URL to the page on Bleacher Report. He misspelled bit.ly.

He does. Apparently he prints out all of his emails and doesn't go back to the original to C&P from when he does the update.
