Io Shirai vs Kairi Hojo confirmed for BEW, London, 5/22/2016
pantherwagner replied to Ship Canal's topic in Pro Wrestling
I'm super pushed for time Panther so sorry for just dumping a list of links from an external source on you, but these links to dailymotion matches should help you familiarize yourself with some of the Stardom women. The full index is here: http://joshicity.com/joshi-match-recommendation/ In particular I'd recommend: 2015: May 17th – Kairi Hojo vs. Mayu Iwatani in Stardom June 14th – Kairi Hojo vs. Meiko Satomura in Stardom July 26th – Kairi Hojo vs. Meiko Satomura in Stardom August 23rd – Io Shirai vs. Mayu Iwatani in Stardom September 13th – Hudson Envy vs. Io Shirai in Stardom September 23rd – Hudson Envy vs. Kairi Hojo in Stardom 2016: January 17th – Mayu Iwatani vs. Kay Lee Ray in Stardom January 17th – Io Shirai vs. Kairi Hojo in Stardom Thanks, this is appreciated. I have seen that some of these girls have wrestled Satomura - who I have not seen in ages but I really liked back in the day, so I will try to track down those matches as well. -
Hansen was great. I could listen to him talking for hours. The Bossman daughter who spoke looked like Ronda Rousey and Bossman's love child. Her speech was quite funny and genuine sounding. I agree with all the comments about Sting looking like he was an exec at a company dinner. He spoke like a guy who wouldn't have felt a void in his life if he hadn't received that award, which is probably a good thing for him and his family. Flair was very entertaining in a Flair ad-libbing way but it was way too much about himself and not enough about Sting (hardly a surprise if you listen to his podcast). Freebirds were pretty good but the ending was quite embarrassing. I also have no idea why there was so much time spent on the pre-show speculating on Hayes' attire when it was a lot more normal than what he usually wears (I'm sure many of you have seen the Bryan WWE 24 episode). I wonder what was on Vince's head when Snoop said that Cena flew the friendly skies with him...

I may go but I don't know yet. I am pretty good friends with the guy bringing the Stardom girls to Europe but I may end up going to the show in Barcelona instead. I have never seen any of them wrestle. Which matches should I look for? -
Somewhere at the family house in Spain I have a listing (somewhat incomplete) put together by a gentleman who went through the reels of the entire French INA archive. I just can't find it. OJ, I may have told you that story about ten billion times times every time we go for ramen/beer in Tokyo. I need to look for that list again.

What British DVD company? Also, doesn't everybody's favourite ALLEGED pedo RF have master tapes of the entire ECW TV run? I guess they could strike a deal to buy/borrow the masters and make a digital transfer.

This is spot on. In the 90s/early 00s he was one of our guys (good wrestler, small, underpushed, buried by the MAIN EVENTERS ON STEROIDS, etc.) who eventually made it based on hard quality work and charisma. But if we go back his first book made him look like a total douche and kind of exposed him as being quite dumb.

I haven't seen this in more than a decade but I remember Fujinami vs VICIOUS WARRIOR from 1989 being a lot more watchable than it had any right to be. Sid and Hansen were a tag team once or twice on Worldwide (I think), maybe that's where they got the idea from. I thought they looked badass together.

I hated Valiant during my WORKRATE years but quite enjoy him now for what he brings to the table. He's also a million times better at his shtick than similar WWF shite "fun" gimmick workers like George Steele, Hillbilly Jim, The Bushwhackers... or Brutus Beefcake.

Old luchadores aren't banged up nearly as badly as their US counterparts. I'm not sure where the less travel part comes from? They tend to work a lot more dates than a regular US wrestler and Mexico is a pretty big country, even though obviously not as big as the US. The AAA guys criss-cross the country a lot, though they travel in really comfortable buses most of the time. I think the three big factors are: - The flat back bumps that Loss already mentioned - American wrestlers tend to fall on their knees a lot, even when selling punches and what not. - Less steroid usage (again, talking about the older wrestlers) leads to less muscle tears. I don't know if anybody ever in lucha has had a quad detached from the freakin bone. The dives seem to be the leading cause of injury in Mexico. There are even "interesting" injuries like Hector Garza's old ruptured ballsack after doing the tornillo. On the other hand there seem to be a lot more old guys with bad hips.

The Jim Cornette Experience
pantherwagner replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I think he'll keep the ranting but Brian will ask him about enough interesting old or new topics to keep it from being a 60 minute rant on people that like guns, Allah or Jesus Christ. -
I wish WWE's response was: SHIT, SOME INSANE PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT TO WATCH OLD MSG SHOWS, LET'S UPLOAD ALL OF THEM TO OUR NETWORK.

The Jim Cornette Experience
pantherwagner replied to flyonthewall2983's topic in Publications and Podcasts
The Cornette show has been so much better without her prodding Corny into talking even more about guns/muslims/Bernie. MSL understands his role and lets Jim rant as he pleases but that's about it. This show will only get even better with Brian as the co-host engaging Jim to talk more about old wrestling. -
WWE DVD Best of Clash of the Champions - matches selected
pantherwagner replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
To be fair, things like Clash of the Champions (or SNME when they tried to revive it) were made obsolete by Raw and Nitro. -
6:05 Superpodcast Episode #12 - Way Ahead of My Brain
pantherwagner replied to Bix's topic in Publications and Podcasts
David, other than the Sweet Georgia Brown article what other Moolah article you referenced on the show? There should be some sort of playlist but for articles that you reference. I was listening to this on a plane and couldn't take a note! -
WWE DVD Best of Clash of the Champions - matches selected
pantherwagner replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
Here's the real million dollar question. Why on the show graphics it is Clash of the Champions but during commentary it is called The Clash of Champions? -
Nothing wrong with that but in cases where the entire episode isn't there they should mention why it is missing. Maybe through crowdsourcing they could find a good enough Betamax copy from a trader.

Yeah, that one suspends too much disbelief. I haven't watched any of those matches (life is to short to watch TNA) but wasn't there a time when somebody won a title shot but one of the actual losers of the match got a title shot before the winner did? It could have been in another stip match or tournament but I recall Meltzer saying something like that a few years ago.

I rarely ever drink while watching wrestling on TV but live lucha libre is best enjoyed while having a cold Tecate with chamoy and chile. It's part of the experience. Watching minis wrestling is a lot better when drinking cheap mezcal cocktails too. I have a friend who sometimes books wrestling shows in Spain. Most of the talent isn't very good but he's brought some decent UK wrestlers and some bigger stars like Paul London or Hikaru Shida. He uses an old folks recreational home as his venue and right in front of that place there's one of those old school bars for old men where they have Bulldog Gin and Tonics for 4 euro. Depending on the quality of the show I can have anywhere from 2 to 4.

There's not a giant pile of young Black Terry around but he was one of those very underrated guys back then with smart fans (same could be said about Jose Luis Feliciano). Steve Sims saw Terry/Feliciano several times on non televised matches during his early 90s Mexico trips and he called them the most underrated tag team (not trio) in Mexico... but I'm not sure he'd have made anyone's top 25 or maybe even top 50 Mexican wrestlers of the year back then. When he was Guerrero Maya was considered a very capable journeyman that would never get out of the tercera at Arena Mexico. Can't remember anybody ever claiming he was misused or underpushed. His non wrestling business were doing pretty well so he was completely gone for a decade or maybe more. That's partly why his comeback was so amazing on so many levels. He came out of nowhere and he was incredible. Negro Navarro to an extent had a similar story. Post UWA death he'd pop up randomly at some shows for AAA or perhaps ENESMA, OCESA or PROMELL or GWAS or whatever the flavour of the month new hotshot promotion was, and he'd look like a guy on the card. Historically he was considered to be the 3rd best worker in the Misioneros team (obviously talking about the Signo/Texano version, not the Black Power version) then he showed up on IWRG and we were all wondering how could have we missed him being such an amazing legendary superworker. That being said both men's "old man career" is so great that you could throw away anything their did in their 20s and 30s and you could put them on your top half of the list and I'd not disagree with it at all. I also acknowledge this is a grand statement for Navarro because we'd probably think differently if we had hours and hours of Misioneros matches from their prime.

I like Kandori but a lot of the LLPW was hard to get through back in the day, partly because the roster wasn't very good. She'd also no sold a lot when she was in with lesser ranked opponents. I understand that was part of her gimmick/aura but it didn't make for entertaining matches. Kandori vs Nakano chain match is a great match that never gets a lot of praise.

Yes, the Star of Death cage match. I guess that you could say that match isn't available anywhere, not just online. This was a holy grail for lucha fans back in the day. I imagine that today we'd think it's a disappointment because by all accounts it was just a match with tons and tons of crazy spots that had never seen before.

The best Mexican I have ever seen from that era is Galactica/Pantera Surena. According to Box y Lucha mythology the best worker of the 70s was Chabela Romero. There are only a few clips of her here and there as well as at least one match against Jackie Sato. Martha was fat, wore facepaint and had punk rock style clothes. That's where the Dump Matsumoto comparisons should end. I never thought much of Irma Aguilar and Irma Gonzalez. Lola Gonzalez was alright but I also was never impressed. Not a single Jackie Sato mention. People need to watch more Jackie Sato. It's amazing to see her and Yokota (when she still was Rimi Yokota) being several levels above everybody else in All Japan Women. Her matches with Yokota would be the best place to start.

Esther had a really bad knee injury and she was never the same after that. Crazy as it sounds, before the injury she had Toyota/Kyoko level potential. Her peak was too short to be considered even as a top 50 woman of all time.

Before Bix or Kris get in: Dale Veasey, Jeep Swenson and The Warlord.
