Pro Wrestling Moves in Other Sports
pantherwagner replied to theconstipatedsmark's topic in Pro Wrestling Mostly
A few days ago there was a Rock Bottom KO in MMA. https://vine.co/v/e3ruPgze6d9 In football (soccer) Luis Suarez may have been a Bushwhackers fan with all the biting that he's done in his career. -
Who are your top 20 wrestlers in the world?
pantherwagner replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Pro Wrestling
Is Akebono that good? I haven't seen an Akebono match in more than half a decade and back then he wasn't very good. What should I watch? I'm intrigued because I always liked his character and presence plus I liked him in sumo. -
Breaking Ground was really good and if they keep up by the end it may be the best series WWE has ever produced. Being a modern WWE fan (not something I'd call myself) must be really frustrating because you see them doing high quality narrative like this and then you tune in on Raw and see another MONSTER KANE reboot and Lana in denim skirts.

Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
pantherwagner replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
Nakamura is puzzling. It's weird to see all those people voting in Japan for him but not Akiyama or Taue. The lucha contingent got a small victory as the numbers of Villano III are some sort of a miracle (I was expecting him to drop off forever) and him, Misioneros and Cien Caras would have all probably been in if Aguayo hadn't had such huge support from people that probably only voted for him. It's possible that some or all of them will get in next year (it all will depend of Mistico's support). -
There's not a lot more to the story than what I mentioned, things simply got out of hand. The video is on youtube. Look for AAA El Padrisimo, the brawl is on the last part. I have found two versions and both have horrendous quality but it's still quite the spectacle.

I have been watching some random Memphis TV from 1986 and 1989. Everybody needs to watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgYdL1t1AI4

JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
pantherwagner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
That has never bothered me much because it's just moves and if you use them properly then can enhance a match. What bothered me a lot (I have now given up) was seeing young talented luchadores working a soft hitting version of NJPW 90s juniors style within the rules of lucha libre. -
JvK reviews pimped matches from late 90s-10s
pantherwagner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
The thing is, at least on paper, with the emphasis on mat work, the springy mat, and the rolling bumps, lucha should be far more conductive to giving guys the chance to go all-out and deliver an exciting match even on small shows than, say, peak AJ and NOAH. And, as you pointed out earlier, lucha trios guys often have the huge advantage of performing against long-term rivals, giving them an endless bag of tricked out counters and call back spots to sprinkle throughout the match. What could stop them being great every time out? To me, that actually was the case with peak IWRG. I haven't followed them in a few years but during that 2009-20111 period Negro Navarro, Solar, and other maestros, most of which were over 50, were tearing shit up almost every time they showed up. But then I'd look at CMLL and see such talentedand athletic young guys being boxed into working by the numbers bullshit. Anyone care to explain why CMLL/AAA is the be-all-end-all of lucha? Modern CMLL and AAA are no different to WWE in that they are a carefully timed and produced TV product. If it comes off as boxed by the numbers bullshit, it is because it is. Other promotions like IWRG, or things that you see popping up like Chilanga Mask, aren't TV products. It's wrestling on TV (or tape), which is quite different. If you watch older CMLL (and even older AAA) you can see what I mean. It used to be wrestling that got shown on TV like a real sport would be. Guys wouldn't be necessarily working for the hard camera or sometimes for the camera at all, but now that is obviously different. -
The several minute long semi-shoot brawl at the end of the Padrisimo event 15 years ago where AAA and CMLL were literally forced to work together by Televisa. Casas running in with soap all over his hair trying to legit unmask Octagon, Rayo de Jalisco Jr. going for Electroshock, guys like Garza (who were friendly with both sides) trying to keep people from fighting each other and older coked up guys like Pierroth, Pirata Morgan or Cobarde looking for a good ol fight with whoever wants it while younger guys like Abismo Negro are trying to get cocky and getting bitch slapped by Porky (who, jokes aside, was a legit badass). Some guys are clearly working and others are clearly shooting. The production crew is probably clued in so they quickly cut left and right but at some points you can see older guys keeping others down using wrestling holds (it used to be customary to train in amateur wrestling for years before you took your first bump). Pierroth is the greatest non-Terry Funk crazy old man ever and brings a fire extinguisher to the fight at the end. It's a very different world right now but then it was the end of an era, and the older guys and the CMLL trained guys had no respect for the crappy workers without a legit background like Electro Shock, Latin Lover, Cibernetico or Abismo Negro (who could be good at times). There was real resentment because the AAA guys with their theatrics were "killing the business". Others were trying to get at Octagon who they resented for raiding CMLL talent in the locker room to start AAA, which would bring a several year business drought in CMLL. A great Memphis style mess.

Survivor series 1990 an alternative egg hatching
pantherwagner replied to Judy Bagwell's topic in Pro Wrestling
Back then on Spanish TV the leading prediction was that one of the Bushwhackers was going to pop out of the egg. That would have been a fantastic way to debut them. I can't think of anything else that would have worked. -
Flair's podcast (WOOOOONation)
pantherwagner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I expected Flair's podcast to SUCK because of his Legends of wrestling appearances and I'm happy that I was completely wrong. This is the one podcast that I normally listen to right after it gets released. The latest edition with Schiavone had a great Black Scorpion story that had me legit laughing like an idiot, which was quite inconvenient because I was on a train in Bangkok. -
WWF/WWE/WCW TV and house show rarities
pantherwagner replied to pantherwagner's topic in Pro Wrestling
It was in 1991 when Tito defeated Taker. I was there! Tito was pushed as the Spanish speaking star on that tour and it worked, though to be fair, wrestling was so hot back then that they would have drawn a gigantic number without him. Funny thing is that I was feeling hyper while leaving the stadium but A LOT of people were upset because they thought that they would be seeing Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior (who were never advertised). On the 2nd Barcelona tour (1993) Tito was El Matador and he didn't get nearly the reaction. Wrestling wasn't as popular and the bullfighter gimmick is a terrible fit for Barcelona (it would be like trying to get a NASCAR driver gimmick over in New York or Los Angeles). He was supposed to wrestle Bigelow and Hart would wrestle Razor Ramon, but for whatever reason Razor didn't come so it was changed to Tito vs Doink and Bret vs Bigelow. -
Which recent uploads? Back when I was a Mascaras completist (2006-ish) there were a 1977 match and a 1978 match already in circulation, bringing the total Mascaras vs Destroyer match count to 4. I can't remember which was which, but one was in somewhat low VQ and was pretty good (may have been the one in 1978). That is the one that I found last. Another one had been floating around for some time already and was not bad, but it was a major letdown compared to the earlier classics.

WWF/WWE/WCW TV and house show rarities
pantherwagner replied to pantherwagner's topic in Pro Wrestling
Parv, you should check The Best of WWF Vol. 16 video tape. It's the only one that WWE COD never broadcasted most likely because there is a New Japan match and an All Japan Women match. This is the line-up: Best of the WWF #16 (WF056) 09/13/85 Tatsumi Fujinami vs. Giant Machine 1980s Jumping Bomb Angels vs. Bull Nakano & Condor Saito 1980s Mr. Fuji vs. ??? 10/19/85 The Killer Bees vs. Mike Sharpe & Barry O 04/88 The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hercules 04/88 Andre the Giant vs. Jim Duggan 1980s Several Outback Jack skits 10/23/87 Junkyard Dog vs. Harley Race (special referee Andre the Giant) 10/23/87 Jacques & Raymond Rougeau vs. Dino Bravo & Greg Valentine First two matches are from other promotions. Mr. Fuji's match is from somewhere in the Middle East. The 85 match is from the Puerto Rico rainstorm card that you may have already seen. The 1988 matches are from Italy and the 87 matches from Paris. It's a cool tape because they left the original commentary in all the different languages. If I remember correctly the matches from France had a ring skirt with a giant CANAL+ logo, so that was quite a different setting for the WWF. -
WWF/WWE/WCW TV and house show rarities
pantherwagner replied to pantherwagner's topic in Pro Wrestling
For a second I thought you were talking about Rome, but I thought that would be impossible. Of course this is the Nimes one in the south of France, which is regularly used for concerts. I have been there, and I'm with you, it would make for a really cool Network special. I miss the WCW shows in different locations. -
Do you have any favourite oddities or rarities from WWF, WWE and WCW TV or house shows that you know from back in the day or that you have found killing time on youtube or at thehistoryofwwe.com? The well known (at least around here) Arn Anderson vs Tom Magee match from European TV would be a perfect example for this thread. Some rare stuff: - This is now on Dailymotion but Tenryu had a couple of matches that were shown on the European version of Superstars, one against a jobber called The White Shadow and other vs The Brooklyn Brawler. The latter would have been a fine SWS/WAR main event for a minor spot show in rural Japan. I still have those two matches in VHS tapes but only recently found out that they were European exclusives. - Another Tenryu rarity that I recently found on History of WWE is that in 1991 there was a house show in Hawaii (Aloha Stadium) with Flair vs Hogan where the opening matches were Tenryu beating Haku and Kerry defeating Kabuki. Interesting that they put both Japanese against opponents that they were very familiar with. - I also didn't know until recently that the three members of the Orient Express reunited for a few matches. There's one match on tape from the Summerslam Spectacular 91 where Sato, Tanaka and Kato wrestle Steamboat, Kerry and Davey Boy. It would be cool to have these pre-PPV "Spectaculars" on the WWE Network... - Hogan and Backlund teamed once in early 84 on All-Star vs. Tiger Chung Lee and Mr. Fuji. This can be easily found online. Hogan is trying too hard to show how much he likes Bob. Match starts with Lee, a Japanese-Korean, holding Mr. Fuji's Imperial Japan flag. I guess that's right there with JYD asking Killer Karl Kox for help against Ladd and Leroy Brown (I loved the "JYD logic" explanation from Digging in the Crates: well, this guy may not like me, but he sure HATES them). - Actually this is not WCW or WWF/E but for whatever reason Tatsumi Fujinami was in one of the first five or six ECW shows ever at the Original Sports Bar. Main eventing, no less!

Lita with the red hair, cargo pants, etc. was a perfect look for the time. She's the cool chick that you know listened to cool music like The Prodigy and Biohazard (well, yeah...) and you know she'd talk to you while Trish would not even give you the time of the day. You can say the same about the Hardyz, really. They were cool dudes with a cool look. Nowadays sometimes you still see in some London neighbourhoods a guy or two dressed in baggy pants, tight fit shirts, arm sleeves, bandanas, facemasks, crosses'n'skulls, etc., and they look like absolute twats.

And here's his crossfit profile for anyone interested: http://games.crossfit.com/athlete/108169 Halfway through the message I thought you were going to say "and here's a picture of his penis". -
I saw it a long time ago on Ricky Morton's twitter. Really? Well, I guess that answers that. Yeah, I'm not going to go through Ricky's twitter history (my brain couldn't take it) but I was surprised. It saw it as a retweet of Ricky's message (which was a retweet itself) but I took it as the absolute confirmation that this really did happen. Yay...

Your Most Hated World Title Reign in History
pantherwagner replied to JaymeFuture's topic in Pro Wrestling
Hogan early 99 made me check out from WCW. I still watched for about a year, and then very intermittently until the end. Other promotions that I enjoyed (AJW, NJPW, AJPW, CMLL) had died, were dying or were changing completely so I do not think that I have ever been a big a fan since then.
