Grand jury investigating Jimmy Snuka's role in Nancy Argentino's death
pantherwagner replied to Bix's topic in Pro Wrestling
Fuck these people. The guy beat up his girlfriend several times, until he beat her to death. Every three days of so, a woman dies because she gets beatten to death. This is bullshit. Fuck these people and fuck Snuka. Can't blame the grandchildren because they don't know any better. They are kids that will believe whatever story the family told them. As for the rest of the family, fuck them and fuck the people that have donated money. -
Yeah, I didn't see the show until now but wrote the post based on me reading that she told "the real story". It's Luger or Madusa or Hall starting the war depending on the narrative being told at the moment. Molly looked great, Madusa is super cool and Ivory is kind of insane, show was a good watch but at times the ladies came across as trying too hard to praise each other, though I have no doubt that the respect and admiration was genuine.

Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
pantherwagner replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
People like Dean Rasmussen don't have a ballot because they are not on Dave's radar. I doubt Dave would have ever read one of his reviews, Dean doesn't send questions/opinions/reports/whatever to the Observer and they don't hang out on the same message boards or websites. Some people on this board who deserved a ballot made themselves aware to Dave through their work/research/podcasts and got one. I know about several historians who never have been subscribers who have a ballot but, again, these are people that Dave knows about. -
Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread

Guess that means Weston, unless he's asking Stu about Apter. Doesn't voting close in two weeks? He may just be trying to anticipate things. -
It's weird. Even though I think that he's full of it on a lot of stuff that he says, I still like listening to him, whereas with other people (Russo) I just can't bear it. I went to one of the Bischoff/Bruce Pritchard debate/dual interview things, and I came away from it thinking that he's aged the best of him, Heyman, Cornette, and Russo, in the sense that while he is a carny, and kinda full of shit, he seems the most well-adjusted and easy to listen to. He's presumably got fuck you money, so he kinda does stuff like this, and says what he feels like saying, and just does his own thing. He's mad smarmy, but I still have to respect the game. That's the thing about Eric, you immediately want to discount everything he says because he sounds like such a smarmy douche saying it. One of the reasons why I find Eric easy to listen is that he owns up to a lot of the stupid crap that he did over the years. He's got his version of the story for some things but Heyman, Russo, Cornette, Nash, Sullivan, all seem to have excuses or somebody else to blame for everything that ever went wrong. He doesn't come off as a mark for himself or for the BIZ or as a bitter has been. He also speaks like a normal person, which helps. I like listening to Heyman and Cornette but, really, for how long can you put up with their cartoon character personas and way of talking? Also, what's up with WWE lately? Bischoff is back telling his version of stuff (when only a few months ago Madusa had people angry at her for thanking Eric in her HOF speech?), the admission that Turner didn't really care about wrestling, Madusa can say the real version of what happened with the belt and I haven't seen that Nitro Top 10 moments list but no WWF takeover as BEST MOMENT EVER or even appearing in the top 10. Is Vince not supervising every detail anymore? Is he senile and doesn't give a fuck anymore?

ALL three cards sound pretty good. Andre the Giant, Junkyard Dog, & Mil Mascaras d. The Dynamic Duo & Killer Khan. A main event at any arena in the world.
-
It was somewhat surreal - not because of the stories that we have already heard 100 times - but because it was a WWE product. Bischoff is always a good interview, though.

I may have given the entire ECW run a shot chronologically if they had uploaded the 1994 and 1995 commercial tapes. I wasn't a huge fan back then (I was already watching much better stuff in New Japan or AAA at the time) but I still found it a fascinating promotion. It's just that if you don't have the big shows the TV is a series of infommercials including some good, some bad and some terrible stuff. I'm looking forward to the new JBL talk show where he'll have "WWE legends" as guests (Bischoff, Simmons and Road Dogg have been announced).

Eddie Gilbert was the US talent booker for W*ING so it makes sense that he'd use reliable colleagues. Working cheap for Japan is probably a whole different level on the payscale than working cheap for Memphis, too. It's pretty weird seeing that Danny Davis, who was not a giant by any means, was much bigger than the Head Hunters at this point.

IIRC match is presented as 50/50 even though Santo is theoretically the tecnico and Parka the rudo. You know it's going to be a good one when Parka is dressed in all white.

He talked about that on the podcast with Dave Meltzer. He said as soon as NWAClassics launched he had offers from a few people trying to sell him their tape libraries but that he didn't have the money or the resources to pursue it. And seeing as he's said it would take another 2-3 years to get all of the Houston footage uploaded I wouldn't imagine it would change until after that unless the service really blows up in popularity. (So for people who haven't, go subscribe already!) Thanks - there were several interviews with Bruce about the service popping up at the same time so I ended up skipping that one. It makes sense and that's what I imagined. It's a small niche service and it may be a while before the initial investment is paid off.

If the editing isn't good it will be 30 minutes of DDP talking about himself, his yoga, all the people he's helped from the goodness of his heart and then about himself some more.

Also Charlotte, Natalya and Tamina, but I'm not sure how could you air that one now.

I don't think Wahoo vs. Spoiler was even on the radar as a "classic feud" for most of the people here. Makes you think about all the stuff that is kept in vaults over at Titan Towers or Televisa's bunker that we will never get to see... it's great to see people like Bruce working through the footage and finding these gems for us. Bruce - I know that all your effort (time and money wise) is on Houston but have you considered buying in the future any of the other tape collections that aren't owned by WWE?

I wish I could remember the details but for some reason or another in the early 00's once or twice I got Wordperfect copies of the Observer that Dave emailed to me. I will assume that Dave has been good keeping safe copies of those in digital format so it's probably only the really old ones that need to be transcribed. Back then Wordperfect was already out of style - I wonder if Dave still uses it.

I just thought about this post: a friend who is a wrestler in Mexico was in a motorcycle accident this morning (a truck rammed him and the impact sent him flying) and rolling lucha bumps 101 muscle memory has saved him from going head or face first on the pavement. His bike has been totalled - he's fine and will only be out for a few days with a sore knee and a bruised leg.

Some notes: If any of you here is a Terry Funk fan that hasn't seen the Sabu vs. Al Snow (vs. Funk) match that Dan Farren promoted, go watch it. Like Bix said, it's the Funkest thing ever. There are two camcoder versions of it: the first one I ever got was from Kurt Brown/Vandal Drummond and you can see Bob Barnett in the background taping his own version. It was only years later that I saw Bob's version. You guys should have gotten Dan or Kurt to do a quick run in and talk about it because this was tremendous. On the Paco Alonso talk: Paco is a very interesting guy and as he's pretty reclusive I don't think I have figured him out. You hear all these rumours about him not caring, the Lutteroths stepping in from time to time when he messes things up too badly, etc., but whenever he talks he always comes off as a very smart guy. It's not like Russo or Dixie or other people that after 5 minutes you know they are just babbling bullshit. Most of his inner circle (Panico, Feliciano, Colombo, etc.) are smart and knowledgeable as well... then you see the way they run their business and it makes no sense at all. Bret Hart was perhaps bigger than Undertaker in Germany, though both were gigantic. I remember being 12 or 13, going to the tourist newsstands in Barcelona and making my mom buy the German teen magazine BRAVO because I was totally embarrassed to be seen buying such a girly girl magazine. The German WWF boom in the mid 90s is often talked about but people rarely ever mention how big wrestling was with German and Austrian women.

Digging in the Crates #2 - w/ Phil and Kris

I'd pay good money to see an Armstrongs vs Villanos feud even today. Robert Fuller using his southern plantation owner as the benefactor of Los Villanos could have been epic. Eventually after months and months of bloodshed people would kind of appreciate the Villanos (well.... you'd hope) so you could turn them face and then bring in Disorderly Conduct as Fuller's new goons. Anyway, enjoyed this show (though I haven't listened to the final match yet) a lot. I don't listen to match review shows, just not my thing, but I find this one very entertaining. -
It all comes down to building a theme-wrestler attachment. Wrestling could learn a lot from MMA there. Wanderlei Silva during the PRIDE days came out to Sandstorm by Darude and it didn't make him seem gay, effeminate or less of a bad ass motherfucker than he was. Michael Bisping has got one of the best live entrances in MMA and he comes out to 90s Britpop. It seems to be more about hyping up a crowd than about making a character look tough. Either way, check out any recent UFC's tracklist (Sherdog does a "The Walkmen" section for every event) and you'll see a pretty wide cross-section of styles and eras... and music is arguably not as important in UFC as it is to WWE. If you want a wrestling example, where themes are played weekly... CMLL and AAA have better entrances, partly because music is better and also because it's more varied. They are also not afraid to embrace folk/traditional songs, but I also understand WWE is different because they don't have anyone like Atlantis on their roster. To me this boils down to WWE being 10 years behind in music just like they are 10 years behind in production, 10 years behind in booking of ethnic characters (ok maybe 15 or 20), 10 years behind in their booking of women (ok maybe 6 or 7 now) and 10 years behind on many other aspects of their product.

Well and sometimes Sting's bat would bend after a hit, which made the entire thing look hokey. I just thought about the FMW special: Mr Pogo's scythe. Another great example of : you bring that big ass sickle and you use it like THAT? And really dumb, but in a completely different way, was the staple gun that became an indy hardcore wrestling feature in the 00's.

Fuerza Guerrera beating up Gallo Tapado with a live chicken was silly, awesome and wrong in large and equal amounts.

The Singapore cane is all about historical context that may be lost if you weren't around back then. In either 93 or 94 there was an American kid that commited some kind of crime in Singapore (theft, vandalism or something relatively minor) and it as a huge news item in the west, and especially the US, as it was the first time a westerner was sentenced to that kind of punishment.

The leg was tremendous. I imagine Vachon was absolutely thrilled to be a part of that angle. Now, my favourite usage of a foreign object ever is Mascara Ano 2000 cracking a beer bottle on Perro Aguayo's head and it shattering all over the place. Perro's Muto 10 bladejob and stretcher job almost caused a riot and brought months and months of big business.
