Not that I disagree with you, but I'm curious about your thoughts on Memphis promotional music videos.

The Beginner's Guide To British Wrestling
pantherwagner replied to ohtani's jacket's topic in Megathread archive
Wasn't sure where to put this. Wayne Bridges has got a pub in Kent, right below a bridge, run by him and his wife. Pub is obviously called The Bridges. This is him and his wife (sorry, can't post this as an embedded image). O_O http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/resources/images/1399736/ -
Alexa Bliss can be the CEO. I never knew how much I wanted a York Foundation nostalgia act to happen until right now. I was thinking that Lana would have been perfect. It would also be a nice way to repackage Alexander Rusev, Jacob Swagger and Marcus Henry as strategist superathletes out to destroy Cena.

Andre takes a fantastic Flair/Valentine face flop. It's funny when people call Big Show "an athletic version of Andre".

This. I subscribed twice. Once in the beginning to only be let down after a few months and then again recently to see if anything new was added and I was disappointed again. Never again unless I hear about a ton of territory stuff added. I know I'm not the target audience but it's disappointing to say the least on what they have on there as far as 70's and 80's territory stuff. That's part of the problem. The view of their audience is too narrow. You are a wrestling fan who likes wrestling enough to go to a message board. I'm pretty sure you have a spare 10 bucks in your pocket every month - you should be the target audience too. I have given up on them uploading any wrestling I am interested in (and, besides, NWA Classics fills in that gap now) but what you mentioned would be great. Every CHV and MSG show ever would really be tremendous. I grew up watching UK imports of the CHV tapes and I'm sure many others did.

Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
pantherwagner replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
Panther is a modern candidate with plenty on tape but he's often overlooked because a bulk of his work is on trios matches. We don't have his 80s stuff other than a match here and there, though. Parka's entire career is pretty much on tape. Others like Viillano III or Misioneros (most of their top work is not on tape) or Brazos (only the tail end of their trios career is on tape) have it worse. -
Then based on a rough estimation, this is the stuff that was shown on 24/7 / Classics on Demand / WWE Classics and should be ready to be uploaded whenever they want: - anything since the HD move + every DVD release ever - the entire Video Coliseum collection - every MSG show ever and over 200 big arena house shows (Boston/Spectrum/L.A...) - every AWA PPV/Supershow, a chunk of All-Star Wrestling 1981. - the entire TNT run including the Bobby Heenan Show - the entire Prime Time run from the day Heenan joined - ECW Hardcore TV until 1998 (probably all, but that's where they stopped) - Mid Atlantic 1981 and 1982 - the entire Raw, Nitro and Smackdown runs - chunks of Stampede Wrestling 1978 and 1979 - World Class from 1982 to 1984 - NWA/WCW Saturday Night from 1985 to 1988 - WWWF Championship Wrestling 1977 - WWF Mania 1993 - WCW Worldwide 1993 probably a lot more, I just put together this list in five minutes looking through a tape list.

Observer HOF prediction/ballot question thread
pantherwagner replied to dkookypunk43's topic in Megathread archive
Bryan, Taue, Park, Blue Panther too. Some people (not me) might argue Nagata and Edge. Unfortunately Fujiwara is not a guy that anybody outside of this board and DVDVR will consider as a serious work candidate. -
Respect is the only time I have seen him but if it's a common occurrence then the gimmicky chants will probably stunt his growth.

Yeah, this. Get ready for years of HHH and Steph as the loving father figure / wrestling creators. The day Vince steps down (=becomes senile and/or dies) the stock will probably plunge because large corporate investors will dump it, hope that everybody else follows suit, and then pick it back up on the cheap and act like an "activist investor" to try to shake down the company's board and/or to create a sale to a large conglomerate. The only way that HHH and Stephanie will retain power is to prove that their audience love them and that they have created their own unique brand from scratch, their own visionary creation (forget about how much of that is true or not, just how credible the story is to a man in a suit and a tie). Somebody already tried to do this months ago when the stock plunged but their network numbers grew thanks to promotional tricks and right now (because of Netflix) they can keep the stock growing on future returns, not current returns or classic stock valuation metrics. The careful presentation of HHH and Stephanie's image reminds me a lot of how WWE tried to remake Vince as the lovable announcer dad post-steroid trial and pre-Mr. McMahon, with the more casual clothing and frequent video packages of WWE's good deeds. Only this time, they are trying to get HHH over to a new and different audience, which means he's always wearing suits and he gets all public credit for NXT. Great analogy, though rather than trying to fool the general public this is a case of wrestling conmen trying to outcon Wall Street conmen. I don't want to get off topic but I expect a lot more WWE stock trouble when/if the gimmicks are up and Network growth stalls while every other revenue source keeps decreasing. This may actually take years to happen, though.

Was WWE CoD captioned? I thought it was, but I never had the service itself.

I think that they just seem to be overly fixated in the mid 90s while ignoring that there may be a market for early 90s Superstars or Horsemen Era NWA/WCW. At the very least, it seems odd that they don't seem to push harder for the Savage/Hogan/Dusty/Flair nostalgia audience.
-
To be fair to Madden, I don't know if this has already been mentioned before but he probably voted for the Andersons because they are still being referenced as people that need 50% of the vote to stay or they will be dropped. John, the main problem with clutter is that if there's a constant 20-30 % of people that will always vote for somebody like Curt Hennig on gut feeling or what not, and hurt the chances of viable candidates like Ivan Koloff. And the last thing we need in the Lucha and Europe sections is more names that somebody clearly unfit to vote in the category may recognise.
-
Really I think Corey Graves is the best colour man they have had since Bobby Heenan. To be fair, Graves is good and most of the annoying cliches came from Saxton and Brennan. I find the NXT commentators to blend in a lot. They don't sound distinctive enough most of the time.

I don't watch NXT TV but I tend to watch the big shows. This was easy to watch, which says a lot because the MSG show was painful, and it's all I expect from WWE 2015. If I have a negative is that the commentary is still awful. Fat Michael Cole is terrible. The NXT commentators have the worst traits of WWE shills AND they have managed to incorporate some of the worst traits of UFC, with constant mentions to wrestlers being gutsy WARRIORS after being beaten down for a couple of minutes.

Flair's podcast (WOOOOONation)
pantherwagner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Hogan has got a set of pre-packaged bullshit stories that he's usually semi-consistent with so it's funny to see him scramble when he does not have a ready-made answer. Like he doesn't know why Hart hates him. Podcast was entertaining for what it was but Hogan is Hogan so that's what you get. -
Eventually there will probably be a historical Japan/Mexico group, which may lead to other problems. If there's a single historical group you would be creating another hodge podge category. If there are localised Japan and Mexico historical groups some people will complain that it will be an easy way in for some candidates. Villano III should have been in a decade and a half ago. If he's not in, he's never going to get in, no matter what the rules are, because it's not a rule problem it's a voter problem. All the support for Aguayo or Parka worries me because it seems to mostly come from uninformed people who should not be voting in that category and are screwing it up for everybody else (fwiw, I think both should probably be in the HOF in the future). So in a way, guys like Cien Caras, Villano III or Blue Panther need to be in or need to be out. We need to make room for other deserving lucha candidates that nobody will vote for.

Was the 1983/10th Aniversario the first one ever?
-
Ah yes, forgot Scorpio (he’s on the early TV tapes that we have got) and Tamba, who had the Monsoon match at one of the Aniversarios. I can imagine why the WWC guys didn’t work Mexico much (thin roster working tons of shots for more money) but the other way around would have made sense. El Toreo rotated stars quite a bit on the big shows so 1-2 month tours could have worked, even during the booming early 80s Mexican lucha economy. Side note, but I love watching the Cartelera videos from WWC on youtube. Gordman vs Colon, Aguayo vs Singh, that stuff looks great.
-
Thanks Matt - someday I may try to research Mexican luchador appearances on WWC. Does anybody know why there was never a great Mexican-Puerto Rico luchador cross over? Of course, other than Mil Mascaras, the short lived Invasion Azteca in 1997 or the many appearances of the minis during the 90s. Is it because Colon and Invader love to fight and defeat much larger foes? I know Enrique Vera, Anibal, El Monarca, Perro Aguayo and others toured a few times in the early 80s so it may just be that we do not have the big TV shows from the era. Aguayo in particular would have been perfect for the blood and guts style brawls and size wouldn't have been much of a factor as Colon and Invader weren't that big. Never mind larger wrestlers that could work and brawl, like MS-1, Masakre, Sangre Chicana or Faraon. I know MS-1 and Chicana could cut a promo, too. It's also odd considering how big the Boricuas were in CMLL mid 90s. It's not like WWC was on fire back then and guys like Silver King and Emilio Charles would have at least brought the product up during a time when it looks like they were recycling feuds from the past. Is the lack of cooperation a political thing? I know Quinones was gone and he was the CMLL liaison but they could have easily worked with independent wrestlers or with a different office. It's just odd because the styles of both countries would have been a very good match.

Maybe this should be on the HOF thread itself, but I will reply here and let the mods choose whether to move our posts or not. I voted for both but my guess is that the ones that voted for one but not the other did so because they found other candidates to be more important and/or needing the votes. Those on this thread who voted for only one of them have used their 10 votes. I consider both to be on the same level as far as candidacy goes. Legendary stars, both were main eventers and draws for decades but never THE GUY so they suffer from being somewhat overshadowed by contemporaries (Demon and Santo as tecnicos, Mendoza and Guajardo on the rudo side). Huracan is stronger on the historical significance/influence side and a bigger draw. Lagarde was the better worker and the ultimate professional. Both have been somewhat forgotten in time for different reasons. Lagarde retired earlier than Mendoza/Guajardo and doesn't have the promoter career or the legendary family that kept the names alive. Huracan had the big trademark scandal and lost a lot of goodwill with many people when he came clean on his alcoholism and claimed that most major stars of the time were drug addicts and/or alcoholics.
