Little Known Facts, Speculations, Scandals and Wrestling Trivia

Does he Mongolian chop anyone? Well if you look at my avatar he's putting the claw on me, but I'm not homeless and I didn't have wine, so I guess he didn't chop me. -
Little Known Facts, Speculations, Scandals and Wrestling Trivia
pantherwagner replied to Fantastic's topic in Pro Wrestling
I guess I'll go the trivia route. Killer Khan is an enka (Japanese traditional music) singer and even today he gets several bookings a month to sing in restaurants or theme bars in Asakusa (Tokyo's most popular traditional district). 35 years ago in Mexico he was known for his marvelous voice and would entertain himself singing backstage or during road trips. -
I have thought about Kerry as an inspirational IC champ. It probably would have never happened with Fritz alive and the WWF wasn't ready at the time for that either.

More Mexican wrestler matches are always welcome. Are there by any chance any Harley Race vs. El Halcon title defenses on tape?

That side has been less obvious in the last couple of decades, but has always been there. When Casas left the UWA they wanted to make Pimpinela Escarlata slightly less flamboyant and more serious to push him as the new Casas. This would have been quite interesting, because Escarlata back then was excellent and super charismatic, so with the proper push he could have taken things to the next level. His first major feud was going to be with Signo, who made it very clear that there was no way that he was going to put an exotico over and that was it. Casas becoming the "Flair in the Carolinas" of Arena Mexico is a true testament to his abilities. It's even more impressive considering that Mexico is a very "macho" country where being gay or effeminate is still some sort of a religious sin. Satanico is somewhat underwhelming at first and it takes years of watching him to realise how great he truly is (or at least that was my case!).

Watch the match - it's an interesting one though it feels short. Mascaras only had good matches with people willing to take stuff from him because he wasn't going to give it to you. If you were ready to take holds then Mil would work a match with you. If you were happy to stooge, bump and "wait for an opening" you were going to get squashed. When reading match recaps from Mexico (as we do not have old footage) early on he seemed to work a more classic babyface getting sympathy/comeback style. I think that started when he was travelling to Japan where the Japanese made you fight for your holds.

So....Mistico I/Sin Cara/Mysteziz just returned to CMLL
pantherwagner replied to sek69's topic in Pro Wrestling
Mistic 2.0 is a dumb name but it doesn't matter. He will be called like that on TV, magazines and show posters but nobody else is going to use that name and most people will know who he is. Little kids won't bother their parents to take them to a show with "Mistic Dos Punto Cero" even if that's on the marquee. That's what happened with Myzteziz or L.A. Park. On the flip side, that's why unscrupulous promoters can fool people when using "El Hijo de Rey Misterio" with "El Hijo de" in tiny letters. -
[1983-05-27-Houston Wrestling] Mil Mascaras vs Masked Superstar
pantherwagner replied to shoe's topic in May 1983
I'm with you here, it ended way too early. The ref bump at the end was silly, it made no sense as it did not change the outcome. It was a good 10 minutes but that's about it. Interesting to see Mascaras here vs Mascaras working WWWF. He's a lot more competitive here and works like he'd work in Japan. -
The year old email stuff is quite common. This year he actually sent me the ballot by replying to a Kris Zellner email where I was a receiver.

Well, it's not QUITE the same but there is a Nobuhiko Takada vs Abdullah match on the aforementioned 10/8/96 Tokyo Pro show. It's as awful as you might imagine and ends with oh my god http://vk.com/video14563695_165426560 That match is quite the collection of LOL and WTF moments. Butcher's verbal selling of the kicks (pretty sure that's the most damage he had taken in a match in ages), the pin attempts, the crowd actually cheering for Butcher at one point, the ref wearing a Juventus t-shirt. Back in the day I didn't know that Takada took the match for a lot of money to help out UWFi's struggling finances so I assumed he must have had YAKUZA DEBTS or something like that.

Okerlund is a funny one. I absolutely love the guy and think he should be in (I don't vote for him because I don't vote in the US region). But if you want to dissect him, the guy is a complete sleazebag with that Flair/Blackwell hotline deal or the "fun stories" when he loads up cocktails with tons of alcohol and presents them to young women.

It would have been awesome if Tamura had refused to work with New Japan because it was a joke and not real wrestling and he ended up wrestling indies vs Porky, Sabu and Abby.

Definitely enjoyed it but failed to meet admittedly incredibly high expectations. Also some very noticeable editing and jump cuts here. Probably 40 or 50 extra minutes of DDP talking. The odd cuts happen on pretty much every episode of this show, though. Sometimes there's an interesting discussion and it... just... gets cut. But same here, enjoyed it but it wasn't what it could have been. Vader was completely silent during the Nitro discussion (obviously) so it was a weird dynamic. I loved Sting's White Castle talk though. This show is hands down the best thing on the network.

Damn man, this almost looks like a Dylan list of wrestlers better than HHH where he'll throw in some comedy names like the Renegade for kicks. Monster Ripper? Miss Mongol???? I like Banks a lot but I couldn't see why anyone at this point could reasonably put her in a top 50 GWE women's only list other than perhaps at the bottom. There's so much great stuff from Japan in the 80s and 90s.

Great wrestling promos from outside wrestling
pantherwagner replied to S.L.L.'s topic in Pro Wrestling Mostly
For those of you in the US: there are youtube subtitles in case that you don't understand ANYTHING. The "there's going to be three hits in the fight" line is tremendous and would actually be great for a wrestling promo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdZ581yzCek -
Damn. How come I never knew that? (well... I'm sure that at some point I have known and then completely forgotten) Not in Mexico City traffic. It's about 50 mins by metro and a bit more or a bit less depending on traffic. Your point stands though. It was common back then that superfans would watch whichever card started first and then rush to the second building to watch the main events.

These are exactly my thoughts. However, as far as impact goes, Breaks hit me right away. I was also much older and more mature in my wrestling tastes, while I have basically known Dandy for almost as long as I have been a fan. But Breaks was one of those guys whose name you can barely recognise and then you see how good he is and wonder what else have you been missing.

Fair for Flair: a mini-series
pantherwagner replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in GWE Podcasts and Publications
You are correct about the vowels. I have a co-worker who was born in the U.S. but moved here to Puerto Rico around age 9 and had to learn Spanish. She said it became easier for her once she realized that the vowels were always short pronunciation. So my advice when learning Spanish is to short the vowels when pronouncing. That advice is spot on. This is because it's a syllable-timed language (where every syllable takes up the same amount of time to pronounce) while English is stress-timed. Once English speakers get the concept of syllable-timing their pronounciation becomes ten times better. It's the other way around for Spanish speakers who learn English: you'll notice how there's barely a difference in how some pronounce fifty to fifteen, because stress-timing is not natural to us. Otherwise Spanish is a very easy language to pronounce, as every syllable is always pronounced the same way. -
He was talking about a new season of Legends House :-) Recently on the Jericho podcast Bill Apter mentioned that he had recently been at the office "filming a pilot for the network" but he obviously didn't say anything else. It would be cool to see a PWI style show.

Not that I disagree with you, but I'm curious about your thoughts on Memphis promotional music videos. I love those! Those don't bug me because they don't intersperse the original video like they're trying to make me think Kurt Cobain and Stevie Richards are pals that hang out. Good, good, I would been shocked if you had answered anything else. By the way, that little Memphis wrestling jingle they play before commercials is awesome.

I believe that in the last conference call Vince said something along the lines of having more WWE Network content to appeal to older fans. Whatever that means.
-
The cool thing about 24/7 is that they would sometimes blow you away with some cool old shit, like early 60s Gorilla Monsoon in Stampede, a Harley Race title defense from 1973, "new" 70s AWA, Race vs. Graham, 1981 El Solitario in World Class, etc. None of the current uploads really are of much interest to footage geeks like us.

pantherwagner replied to sek69's topic in Pro Wrestling
Fans in Mexico were behind the times until the early 00's but nowadays they are as sophisticated as your average WWE or New Japan fan. As a random example, everybody knew Silver King was Black Tiger back in 2001. Before that, only the Arena Mexico fans were "smart fans" so to speak.
