He also had two great Hara singles Reviews 7/14/92 Man alive did this rule, Ishikawa has been the total discovery of this WAR project, I honestly had zero memory of his existence before this and he has been a total superstar. Both guys come off as total bad asses, they both level epic beatings on each other to start up the match, but Ishikawa gets the upper hand. The finish run of the match was so great, Ishikawa is relentless, crushing with suplexes and kicks to back, Hara keeps getting up but Ishikawa keeps knocking him down. Finally Ishikawa just starts punting him in the kidneys until the ref just calls the match. Ishikawa then just chucks Hara out of the ring throws him into a table and slaps the fuck out of Fuyuki for no reason. Totally awesome, Ishikawa comes off as a wrecking machine and Hara comes off as a tough motherfucker for being able to withstand the beating. 2/10/93 Ashura Hara vs. Takashi Ishikawa These guys had an awesome brutal battle on the debut show, and their rematch lives up to it. This starts a little slower, as both guys work holds for a bit at the beginning. These are guys who can put on a headlock, as they look like they are fresh squeezing grapefruit juice. When they start pounding each other it is as violent and awesome as you expect. Ishikawa's stomps to the head and Hara's headbutts were the highlights, and both guys threw cringing lariats. Ishikawa has some pretty impressive agility for a tubby dude, he gets wasted off the apron by a Hara lariat and takes a big bump to the floor. In addition he hits a really pretty pescada. 2010 Puro has a bunch of really stiff wrestling, the thing that makes this so much better is that these guys are really great at selling fatigue and brutality. This isn't two guys exchanging shots with no long term impact, every shot takes the kind of toll you would expect it to, and at the end they look like they crawled through land mines.

He was totally awesome in the WAR feud, rewatch those tags, he was as important as Tenryu in their team, here is my review of the 4/23/93 match Riki Choshu/Shinya Hashimoto vs Genichiro Tenryu/Takashi Ishikawa Tremendous, tremendous match. Three of the all time great asskickers in professional wrestling history kicking major ass, and Ishikawa desperately trying to hold up his end. Really spectacular performance by Ishikawa, he was excellent as the burly, lumpy overmatched guy who was going to jump right into the fray. He was constantly cheap shotting the NJPW team from the apron, running in a stomping then in pin, clubbering them for behind. He both absorbed and delivered a beating worthy of the other three guys in the match. We get an awesome opening Tenryu v. Hashimoto scramble with both guys working crazy fast to grab and arm or leg. The match hits another gear when Choshu gets posted and starts bleeding, Tenryu may be the greatest "blood in the water" wrestler of all time, he just lasers in on the cut, punching and kicking Choshu right in his bloody head. Then we get a spectacular Hashimoto hot tag where he just splits guys in half with kicks, ending in a super hot finish run. I honestly though this was par with your high end All Japan tags of this period. Same level of heat and drama, just replacing the headrops with lariats and kicks to the eye and throat. Highest recommendation, WAR MOTHERFUCKER WAR!!!

I said in 2014 Callihan would have to get released or make WWE TV to make my list, and he has gotten released and has been pretty great on the indies so far. His pair of EVOLVE tags are my two favorite matches of 2016 and I liked his Hero AAW singles a fair amount as well, this is going to be a pretty short run of stuff before the deadline, but I imagine it will get him on my list somewhere

I watched him vs Trevor Lee from January yesterday, and I remembered how much I love his in ring character work, just a great in-ring shit talker and emoter, very good at main event wrestling. I think his best stuff is pretty under the radar, but the Hero feud, the Quakenbush Chikara final and his AAW ace stuff all should put him in the discussion

[2016-01-03-AJPW] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Atsushi Aoki
Phil Schneider replied to GOTNW's topic in January 2016
He is still doing it, 2016 and Fujiwara is still doing his thing. He looks 60 when he was 30, so he is sort of a weirdo wrestling Pharell Williams where you can never really tell his age. With worse video quality this match could have been from the 80s or 90s. This match started out with grappling and that part was truly world class, with Fujiwara still looking like a master, lots of nifty counters and moments of sharp unexpected violence. I especially loved Fujiwara offering a handshake to this young kid which he then turns into a Fujiwara armbar, classic smirking dick Fujiwara. They then go into sort of a time killing section where Fujiwara and Aoki headbutt ringposts, and then back into another cool grappling part with Fujiwara finding a way to get the submission. If we had excised the headbutt section I might have had this as an EPIC which is nuts because Fujiwara is in his MID SIXTIES!! (or maybe he is a vampire who got bit when he was 52 and will be 52 forever)- 2 replies

I reviewed a random 1999 Hector and a local v. Terry Funk and local from an indy somewhere, pretty fun bit of Hector shtick late in his career http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2016/01/tuesday-night-digging-in-crates-hector.html

You serious think Daffney is one of the 100 hundred greatest wrestlers of all time?
-
I think it is different if a wrestler has a small number of matches on tape, versus a wrestler with a small number of matches period. I enjoy Vince as a wrestler, but he has 20 or so matches. Volk Han would be another example, can someone really be one of the best 100 wrestlers ever if they wrestled less then 100 times?

FYI Togo has come out of retirement and is running a wrestling school in Vietnam of all places. I reviewed a match where he worked in a three way tag opener in Singapore under a mask http://segundacaida.blogspot.com/2016/01/luckily-dick-togo-had-something-in.html

Hey did suck in ROH, but had plenty of fun matches in other feds during that time, so I wouldn't say he was unwatchable for two years, just booked badly in ROH
-
Why would he end up on your list at all then? I also think he kind of sucks, but he isn't sniffing my list

Anyone have that Larry Z v. Putski Texas Death match? That is weirdly intriguing
-
Ki might have been a top 5 guy in 2015, he really only wrestled a handful of times, but they were all great, Ki v. Rey Jr. is my MOTY, loved Ki v. Dickinson, the AAA trios was a blast and Cide/Ki v. Hit Squad was another great performance. I honestly could see myself ranking him above Danielson, although I admit that might be a bit crazy.

When watching for the Memphis sets I remember how bad Hashimoto would kill Chris Frazier, he would work regular against the other jobbers and maul Frazier. Have you seen this match? Maybe my favorite live match ever and a great obscure Hashimoto match

All I want for Christmas is an awesome Jose Lothario match

Links? That sounds awesome

Hadn't see in it years and it was as great as I remembered, loved all of the little things Ian did here driving his knuckles into Hero's ribs, that headbutt to the back of the head, all of the knee work was great too, and I loved the finish. I wish more of this Ian stuff was online, but I am not sure any of his best stuff outside of this is online.

Here is an Meth-lab BattlArts match with Chris Hero which is a great example of what I love about Ian Rotten https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1zpyogaicY
