Wait... what? People say only AJPW knew how to work? This is little more than an inferiority complex. The biggest AJPW fans online also like things as varied at NJPW, AJW, Stone Cold and The Rock, Flair and the MX, Hayabusa, Bob Backlund, UWF-style... christ, one of the best things Jewett ever wrote was breaking down how well worked the Stinky Face Match was. I'm sorta with OJ on this, "only AJPW knew how to work" is probably the wrong way to put it & it's not quite as strong as it used to be but for a long time there was a pretty vocal contingent that talked up 90's All Japan as the un-questionable best wrestling to ever exist and Misawa, Kawada or Kobashi as the best wrestlers to ever walk the planet. And yes most fans who thought this way enjoyed other things but typically any suggestion that anything or anyone else could be just as good or even dare to better then AJPW was met with ridicule or atleast bewildermint.

Sign, reminds me that I still need to pick up Ginnety's 80 hour 78-83 AJW comp he put together.

Yeah, it gets a bit confusing if you're not paying close attention. The main original classics run that started airing in the early 2000's was about 95% complete matches. After that there was SP & Premium & maybe 1 more which mostly rehashed stuff from the original classics run or aired things that were allready complete elsewhear. These were pretty much all clip jobs. Recently (post 09) over the last few years there's been a run of "New AJW Classics" that's still airing now and is up to around 90 eps or so. Like the previous versions it's all clipped to hell (you get anywhear from 3 to 12 mins max of each match) but it has one advantage in that they cover a lot of things that we were originally missing footage of over here. Dunno why since AJW did have tv at the time but for example there's HUGE gaps in what's available from tape traders for 90 & 91 so the new AJW claisscs shows do cover a lot of the lost footage (The Kyoko/Yamada 30 min draw from the 91 JGP, the Jungle Jack/Marine Wolves tag title change, a missing Kyoko/Bull match were some of the cooler things to pop up even in clipped form). Goodhelmet or someone else can correct me if i'm wrong but I was under the impression the joshi project got droped. Wasn't it something like the ppl who got sent the footage to sort through didn't want to do it & the ppl who did want to do it weren't going to be sent the footage?

The SC poll was early 2006 though I think the discussion for it started late 05.

Course, back then it's not like there was a choice either. There was no youtube, torrents or file hosting sites and you had to be super duper ultra mega bottom of the barrel deep into the sceen to know about the few direct download websites or ftp servers out thear that you could find a handfull of crappy VQ matches on. Kinda made for better or atleast more conversation though back then, since ppl had a bigger need to seek out & express opinions on stuff when they were gonna have to pay to see it.

Small inheritance when I turned 18, no bills to pay Plus i'd always get shit from Lynch in SLP mode on 8 hour tapes whear he'd combine several shows on them. So really it only worked out to like $6+ per show if it was your standard 2 hour tv block. I was ordering shows like every 2 weeks back then For comparison, these days i'm so broke i'm lucky to have enough to spend on new dvds 2-3 times a year

[1990-02-12-FMW-Battle Brave] Atsushi Onita vs Masanobu Kurisu (Barbed Wire)
FLIK replied to Loss's topic in February 1990
Couple years since i've last seen this. I remember it being pretty decent but not great, early prototype for the formula Onita would perfect later on, a lot of great drama & psychology but the action in this doesn't measure up to go along with it. Maybe i'll give it a re-watch this week end to see if my opinion will change.- 17 replies

Great match, hell of a war between Tenryu & Choshu here & Takano was brining the goods too. Tiger was a little underwhelming, not bad but he mostly wrestled this like it was any other match instead of stepping up & bringing his A game like the other 3. Why was he teaming with Tenryu to begin with instead of one of his regular stable mates? Fuyuki was right thear at ringside & i'd have much rather seen him in the spot.

Heh, Meltzer name droping AJW shoot fights = awesome....

The premise of the question was based on Available Material being able to be taken to the Island. There was a variety of territories. There's very little available, especially of real matches (i.e. Arena matches in full / near full condition). Essentially just Japan and WWWF/WWF in volume, and the WWWF/WWF is a bit spotty: they have far more in the vault than has been release, which makes it not available. For other territories... it's really sparse. Hot beds like JPC, Florida, Georgia, St Louis? Real depth of lucha material, AWA and Joshi? Good luck. I think a good / interesting / fun / great set by Will of the 70s will eventually be very cool. But the vast majority of it will be matches in Japan or matches in the WWWF. It also won't remotely come close to generating 300-360 disks like the 90s sets have (depending upon how many bonus disks get created down the road). The 70s probably would have been a really awesome decade to be a wrestling fan is: * there was as much TV as there was from 1984-93 * as many arena show and other big matches were filmed as in that period * we had access to all of it John I took that in consideration, I guess because I saw much of the 90's stuff already I would want the 70's stuff to check out on a desert Island. For 90's stuff it would be Japan and the Monday Night wars era. I never liked Lucha, too spot fest like for my taste. Then you are watching the wrong lucha. I'll take lucha mat work & brawling over the high spots myself

Nothing blow away great but a fun mid range back & forth match. I was amused near the end when for about 2 minutes it looked like Osamu Kido was really going to beat Jumbo Tsuruta.....then Jumbo made his comeback which consisted of him hitting 1 move then pinning him with a Thesz Press.
-
It's on youtube, as a stand alone match it's actually a really good and def worth watching. It's just that after seeing Tenryu get beat down 2 on 1 & bloodied you exspect him to come back with more then a few stiff chops as revenge.

Yeah that was so weird how the announcer called things. Pretty clear he shoved her down on purpose then regreted it later like oops, but it def wasn't an accident.

Coudln't tell if Kabuki did it for him or Tenryu did it himself but it was pretty easy to tell they were trying to hide him blading when he got in a fight with him & the other guy on the outside near the end.

First time seeing Billy Travis....soooooooo scuzzy, I can't think of any other word. First time seeing Embry & Young too. Akbar I know but don't recall ever seeing him wrestle. Anyways, this started out fun with Dundee punching fools left & right & all around humiliating the heels. Then the match got kinda meh during the first part of the beat down on Adams, then things got good with the destruction of his leg continuing and then things got awesome with the match ending brawl & Adams going all psycho on Embry for shoving down his wife. Need to see more of this

Heh, wish more ppl had that kind of attitude but most don't. Outside of places like this, DVDVR & a few others, when you hear most fans talk about older wrestling they're discovering or even newer things, it's usually the same old shit anyone who's been around more then a few years has heard discussed to death. Those willing to give any more then a cursory glance to the usual suspects are few & far between.

Conflicting match for me. Coming off the heels of the 1/20 tag I was exspecting a really angry hate filled match but instead this was mostly a really hard hitting work rate tag. As a work rate tag it's actually really good but yeah, even Tenryu was kinda low key during most of this, by his standards atleast so I couldn't help but be a little disapointed. Finally during the last minute or 2 the heat gets turned up with as Jumbo & Tenryu go at it on the outside leading to a screwy anti climactic ending with Inoue winning by count out after he knocks Tenryu out with a diving attack as he was trying to get back in the ring. Post match makes up for everything with Tenryu going nuts on everyone and chairs & tables flying all over.

Eh, i've seen a decent sized amount of matches that got 15 to 20 mins from the original tv run, so either I had great luck or you had bad
-
The Brisco matches are high up on my list, always liked him & Terry vs Brody & diffrent partners in All Japan, out thear pick & diffrent then his usual style but I thought him & his wife vs Carlos Colon & Fabulous Moolah in Puerto Rico was awesome.

Between what stuff did air complete or near complete & the large amount we've gotten through various classics airings i'd say it's not a problem. I'll take the 90's over the 80's either way but the clipping shouldn't be a major draw back for that era these days. Yeah, for AJW, you can find a tiny bit of 78 footage if you look really hard and there's a fair amount of 79 out thear but that's it. Near impossible to find anything earlier except for the ocasional short highlight clip. To me the 70's is the best era for WoS too
-
I like Dory myself, wouldn't particularly want a 16 disc comp and I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy his style but his best stuff is up thear with almost anyones.
-
Liked this a lot more then the 1/14 tag as this is essentially pissed off Tenryu vs the world. There's some heated Jumbo/Tenryu action in the first half. Takagi takes a giant beating with Tenryu in ultra dick mode (these two have a really bad ass singles match on 1/28, only goes like 6 mins but it rules). Half the crew at ringside feel the wrath of Tenryu too. Fuchi gets punked out, Mighty Inoue gets his skull cracked with a chair, finally takes Great Kabuki & someone else I don't recognize jumping Tenryu 2 on 1 to stop him, bloodying him up in the process while Jumbo finishes off Kawada who brought nothing to the table here and was just along for the ride to eat the fall.

[1990-01-04-AJW] Akira Hokuto & Yumiko Hotta vs Toshiyo Yamada & Etsuko Mita
FLIK replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
Yeah there's a big switch in crowd demo as 90 wears on, teen girls always remained a certain % of the audiance but by the end of the year you can def tell a lot of the old fans are gone, replaced with newer male fans. Well, she was allready the Dangerous Queen by this point, earned by breaking her neck a few years earlier but still finishing the match. But I know what you're getting at as she's def diffrent hear then she would be a couple years later. I'd say the switch first starts around the end of the year with the Bull matches but most of it takes place in 91 & really kicked in in 92 when she had the big feud with Bull, formed LCO, etc...- 21 replies

Okay match, Tenryu punking out Misawa was the best part & Jumbo playing big brother was amusing. Felt like Misawa & Fuyuki were mostly along for the ride though. Finish is really clever, don't think i've ever seen that one before. Jumbo offers Fuyuki a handshake post match out of pity & Fuyuki accepts.....traitor. Weird thinking about how everyone in this match is dead except Tenryu, something we're more used to seeing with older US wrestling not Japan.
