[1993-08-25-AJW-Legacy of Queens] Aja Kong vs Dynamite Kansai
FLIK replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Heh, sort of similar experience for me. I'd seen a number of 1 off matches before then but the first actuall full shows I got were Big Egg & The Dream Slams (shocking I know) and Aja/Kansai from Big Egg immedialy made me want to track down all their other matches very soon after. Curious what you would consider the prime years for both then? Haven't seen a ton of pre 93 Kansai but Aja'd allready been one of the top wrestlers in the world for 2+ years by this point.- 15 replies

[1993-08-15-JWP-Rolling Summer] Devil Masami vs Hikari Fukuoka
FLIK replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I'm assuming you meant Toyota not Kyoko (her move was the giant swing). They pretty openly admited Fukuoka was a giant fan of Toyota's so that's whear she jocked it from. Quite true, the ultimate on this set will be the JWP tag in November Interesting point about remembering stuff in Devil matches as there's quite a lot o moments from that match and others of hers that have for sure stuck with me even in cases whear it's been years since i've seen said matches. It's funny to think of Devil as this old grizzled vet considering she was only 30/31 at the time. Course, she'd been wrestling 15 years by now but such is the world of Joshi -
OK, completely diffrent style of mat work then shoot style but you might like a lot of old school British World of Sport stuff then. A great introduction match John Naylor vs Zoltan Boscik Not all of WOS is like this obviously but a lot is. Tellumyort has exactly 4 billion and 17 other matches on his acount

What was the buildup for this match like, anyone know? Having a hard time trying to imagine the context in which you go up some guys and say hey "I wanna fight ya'll in a losers must bungee jump match" and actually have that make sense as opposed to any number of established pro wres stips that could have been inserted instead.

AJW I brought it up in the recomendation thread but it kind of got lost in the shuffle I guess. Wasn't something I was going to majorly pimp at that point though I def think it's one of the better matches of the year. Comes at the end of a really long super show, directly following a 40+ min match and a 30+ min match so they go in thear with tons of energy and have a really hate filled war to pick the crowd up. 11/28 show in general has become really under rated by now i'd say, some really good stuff on thear with Toyota/Yamada, AJW vs JWP 8 woman, Ito/Sakie vs Gami/Yasha, Kyoko vs Nabeno which I love as a vet vs young punk match, etc...
-
Zah, for 93 i'll add 8/25 vs Cutie 8/21 w Kyoko & Yamada vs Ito, Aja & KAORU 10/9 w Sakie vs Kandori & Yasha Kurenai 11/28 w Hotta vs Kandori & Miki Handa 12/6 w Kyoko & Hotta vs Eagle, Kazama & Harley 11/28 is the only MUST see but the other's are all still really good.

I've watched this match millions of times but it's been a few years since the last time I took a look. Will get back to it eventually when I get around to reviewing all the 93 joshi that's out thear. Anyways, it's funny, of all the great stuff in this match, one of the biggest lasting impressions for me was Cutie's performance, loved her role as weak link in this....also thought the way she took that drop toe hold was one of the funniest things ever ever ever. One of my favorite feuds of all time. Kansai falling to the uraken straight away sets up a nice little story that plays out throuout all their matches over the next 2 years until finally paying off when Kansai takes the title off of her in 95. Depends whear you look/who you ask. Almost any long time hardcore joshi fan would praise her endlessly as one of the best but she's in that next level down from the all time greats. Not someone like a Toyota or Aja or Chigusa or Kyoko or whoever that even casual followers would know and praise. She's an Arn Anderson not a Ric Flair Never a full time main eventer on her own regularly (though she did eventually get the role of designated world title jobber) but almost never someone who got lost in the shuffle either. When you guys get around to it you'll see that as far back as 91 she was putting on really good matches, her matworker/submission master phase is freakin awesome and she'll be a highlight i'm sure on every other 90's set you do from then on. Even today 23+ years into her career she can still put on a decent match now & then.

Big Josh vs Arn Anderson for 40 mins, WTF? That's certainly a match I would not have exspected to exist. Which WCW show did that take place on?

BTW what was the backstory on The Studd Stable's involvement in this? Cornette's team vs Rock & Roll needs no explanation, Studd Stable vs Rock & Roll I get just on the basis of good guys vs bad guys. What was the beef between the Studd Stable & Cornette's team though?

Gotta say, reading about all these NJPW/WAR tags has been the first thing that really made me want to pick up this set. If there's 2 things i'm always easily pleased by it's angry hate filled wrestling and big multi man tags.

Couldn't remember a thing about this match, actually completely forgot I even had a copy until seeing this thread today. Decided to give it a re-watch and I thought it was pretty good, little aimless for the 1st 1/3 to 1/2 or so, reminded me way way too much of those Gangsters matches from ECW a few years later but I thought it got better as it went on and became a bit more focused. Bobby Eaton completely stole the show for me as he does a bunch of goof ball shit like wrestling with a tire wraped around him and getting his pants pulled down.

The JGP & Tag League stuff should def live up to the hype But meh, to be fair a lot of her other good to great matches weren't put on the set. 1/24/93 Akira Hokuto, Etsuko Mita & Mima Shimoda vs Harley Saito, Eagle Sawai & Miki Handa 4/11/1993 Aja Kong & Akira Hokuto vs Shinobu Kandori & Eagle Sawai 8/25/1993 (All Pacific Title) Akira Hokuto © vs Rumi Kazama 9/5/1993 (Vacant UWA Tag Titles) Yumiko Hotta & Takako Inoue vs Akira Hokuto & Suzuka Minami 10/9/1993 Aja Kong vs Akira Hokuto 11/9/1993 (Hair vs Hair) Akira Hokuto vs Rumi Kazama 11/27/1993 Mayumi Ozaki vs Akira Hokuto 11/28/1993 (Captains Falls Match ) Akira Hokuto, Suzuka Minami, Etsuko Mita & Mima Shimoda vs Dynamite Kansai, Devil Masami, Mayumi Ozaki & Plum Mariko All of these except for Aja/Hokuto and maybe the 1st Kazama match i'd consider better then her & Kyoko vs Bull & Aja and the Aja/Hokuto singles match is atleast a pretty historic moment in her career. As legend goes she was possibly going to win the 3WA title in that match but her leg was so shot that when she got the ring she asked for the match to be changed to non title because she knew she couldn't deliever a great performance but still wrestled anyways. They actually show her getting pain killers shot into her knee post match after it's over after she gets to the back. The 1/24 LCO vs LLPW tag besides being awesome (def one of the biggest ommisions from the set) also was a pretty important moment in the whole feud with Kandori/LLPW. 4/11 & 9/5 tags I remember also having on my list of stuff I thought was essential viewing, the others while not must see MOTY or anything are still really damn good too. Never seen but her vs Debbie Malenko from one of the TVs early in the year i've always heard get pretty decent amount of praise too.

Pretty much my same thoughts. A good match but nothing mind blowing in the grand scheme of things. Toyota/Fukuoka was after this match, the one before was Yamada/Suzuka but both of them fit into that run of the mill catagory.

Yeah, as awesome as angry, pissed off Dangerous Queen can be, she was just as good if not better playing underdog babyface girl, fighting from the bottom to overcome.

Not really someone i'd consider for a list of greatest mat workers ever but i've always liked Dory myself. The grab a hold, hold a hold style i've found I kind of have to be in a certain mood to watch as it's not the easiest to pick up and watch but I enjoy it at times. Mariko Yoshida deserves a mention as well for a thread like this. Many people of course will point to her run in ARSION when she adopted the more shoot/lucha tricked out hybrid style but making my way through her 91/92 AJW stuff she was having great matches based around working your more traditional classic style mat stuff too. Hell, she may have been the best wrestler period in the entire company in 92.

How do you self-identify as a wrestling fan?
FLIK replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
Heh, out of all the comps i've made over the years my Hirota one was by far the biggest seller. People love the heck out of that girl -
Have any of these guys ever had good matches?
FLIK replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Megathread archive
Kamala vs Kevin Sullivan from W*ING was pretty kick ass, i've got it up on my site for download Miller, DDP & Booker vs Luger, Bagwell & Scott Steiner from a Feb 01 Nitro was awesome, one of the last great WCW matches *EDIT* The one talked about here http://ddtdigest.com/updates/2001024m.htm -
Shouldn't be underestimated how big of a star Kudo was at the time. There's a reason their previous match got main event at the 1st Dream Slam. Aja/Combat thing never went anywhear but Aja & Kudo end up having a title match later on that year. All 3 originally trained together in AJW so there's history thear.
