There's a distinction in my mind between fixed fights and worked ones, although I recognize the lines are frequently blurred in shoot and shoot-style promotions. To me, a work entails not just a predetermined outcome but cooperation between the combatants for entertainment purposes. I haven't read Snowden's book, but all the fixed fights in Pancrase I know about were for business rather than entertainment. Case in point, Shamrock lost the King of Pancrase title to Suzuki right before the Severn fight because the company didn't want to risk their champion losing to a fighter from a rival organization. By the way, Snowden's screen name at DVDVR was evilclown. He also posted here under that name before he got banned. For what I don't know, but I recall him once posting that the Rollins/Ambrose HIAC match with the Bray Wyatt hologram was so self-evidently awesome that anyone who didn't like it wasn't really a wrestling fan.

They were. Some of the fights were fixed and others had planned spots, but I'm not aware of any that were pure works.

TK had previously said that the wrestling side of AEW was profitable and investments in the video game division had put the company in the red. We know from history what kinds of cost-cutting measures wrestling companies perform when they're in financial trouble (cutting/lowballing talent, running smaller venues, going live less often). AEW hasn't done any of that. If anything, they've done the opposite.

And I thought we all agreed not to post that MSW clown here. Setting that aside, why would people be skeptical of Punk pulling a power play when he already delivered an unscripted receipt on live TV? Of course, it could simply be a case of Dax going into business for himself. FTR have an obvious vested interest in building anticipation for a Punk/Elite feud since it would put them right in the middle of the hottest angle in years. As for the Elite, it would be understandable if they didn't trust Punk with their bodies. But if it was just a case of putting personal feelings over business, that would be disappointing.

What about Omega? He spent nearly a year on the shelf after dropping the AEW title, and he's worked almost exclusively in trios matches since returning. Realistically speaking, they're both probably on borrowed time as top workers.

WWE sold 30k tickets for Clash at the Castle in the pre-sale and 10k more in the first day of sales to the general public. And London is a much more convenient travel destination than Cardiff for fans in UK and the mainland. It's conceivable AEW could do 40-50k paid before a single match is announced.

The Wembley show is two weeks after the G1 finals. Okada will likely be too banged-up at that point for a showcase singles match (as will Danielson if he works the tournament). I agree that Punk is available, he and FTR should work a trios match-just not against the Elite. That's a matchup that could sell a PPV by itself if built up properly, so save that for later when they might need it more.

The producers seem to make a concerted effort to end the episodes with the darkest subject matter (Grizz, Benoit, Pillman) on a somewhat hopeful note. I don't know if that's possible with Zumhofe unless his daughter ended up winning the lottery or something similar.

This is AAA we're talking about, so they'll likely continue promoting the match even if they know full well it isn't going to happen. Or if they really wanted to, they could probably pay to get the guy licensed. My understanding is that money talks above all else in Mexico and commissions will look the other way if they receive the proper "respect" from a promoter.
