2014 Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame thread
RazorbladeKiss87 replied to Bix's topic in Pro Wrestling
I have a quick question about L.A. Park. I apologize if this is stupid as I'm not someone who is knowledgeable on lucha. I watch it but don't follow it closely or know a lot about it historically. I haven't seen any discussion of him as a viable candidate here. Do you guys generally dismiss him as a HoF candidate? He's a wrestler I've always really enjoyed but don't know how he is seen in comparison. -

Has anyone watched the Weekend of Champions show put on by John Arezzi? I came across it on a SMW dvd but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I feel like he mentioned it on some of the old shows Wade has been uploading. Is it any good? A link to the card, per Cagematch: http://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=63602&page=2 -
I caught that too and it bugged me for a little bit. The whole countdown was kind of lackluster to be honest although I did get a kick out of Bret still being bitter over the "first ladder match" thing.

Wow. I haven't finished the rest of the show but I know nothing that follows will top this match. I thought the Evolution control segment was a tad tedious but in a way it made the chaos that erupted at the end that much more enjoyable. It's not as good as the Shield/Wyatt matches (I'd have to rewatch all three but I don't think it is at least) but it's pretty close behind them. I love six (or more) man tags and wish they would use them more to keep PPV singles matches special for the shows.

I recently started rewatching ROH from the beginning on and I can see both sides of the "Best of" vs "Whole shows" arguments. There's a LOT of bad stuff on these shows but it does keep things fun as opposed to be all serious business. Some of the enjoyment I'm getting is probably nostalgia because this was the era when I was first branching out past WWF/WCW/ECW and was really getting active on the internet. I've had a few friends who are more casual fans watching along with me and a good portion of each show has had trouble holding their interest, mainly the silly stuff. Anytime American Dragon has been onscreen they've been hooked however. One thing I had pushed out of my mind was the terrible techno music used on all these releases.

TNA Impact 4/17/2014 The opening segment made me laugh but it wasn't from anything TNA intended. During Dixie's little speech you can clearly hear a fan in the background yell "Just shut up!" I know a lot of people don't have the patience for this but every show has something that makes me laugh a little and usually there's at least one match I enjoy. We'll see if this show has one. Edit: Call me crazy but I really like Spud and EC3. Total comic relief, yes, but they work. Spud's outfits alone make me like him. I also sort of liked the Monster's Ball main event. I can see why a match with barbed wire and thumbtacks on tv in 2014 is a turn off for some and I think that it is beneath Young and doesn't do anything to make his championship run anymore legit but the match itself was fun. I don't see a lot of mentions of death matches on this board which isn't super shocking so I understand it not getting praise here but for what it was I can't say it was horrible. It's so easy to point out the negatives in TNA but I think if you just shut down and don't give it any thought, the show can be enjoyable in a mindless way. Edit x2: I didn't mean to be insulting to anyone here in the last paragraph. I wanted to put that out there before anyone accused me of doing so.

I would love this. I have a friend of mine who is working on a book anthology of her zine, and thought how great that was. It would be neat to see something like this done with the WON, covering every year. In the past, I've lost issues from time to time, so this would help me out a lot. Also, would be great to keep notes on certain issues. Anyone else interested in this? I've got scans of many years worth of the Observer (and the Torch for that matter) and would gladly drop money on bound collections. It'd be cheaper than buying them off eBay and still would satisfy my need to hold them. Not to mention the amount of paper it would save my place of business.

Is TNA the worst wrestling promotion in history?

Agreed. The copycat booking is really obvious and silly but it is cool to see Young with the title. I've always enjoyed him, even at his most ridiculous. -

Honestly, I haven't watched Impact for months but hearing EY won the title got me to "find" the past few episodes. I've never hated TNA and in fact I've really liked a lot of aspects of the promotion. My biggest problem with it is for some reason I always just forget what's going on. Even if I miss a week of WWE and only follow it through recaps I never forget what was going on but then flip to TNA and I can be watching Impact every week and forget something that happened in an episode I watched a few days before. -
That Countdown was awesome, I thought. It reminded me how much of a Glacier mark I was when I was younger. Evern on Worldwide or Saturday Night I was hyped to see him. The Disco segment came across as really petty and mean-spirited. The gimmick was great for an obnoxious heel but that got lost in the personal attacks by the talking heads, especially Demott. Steiner destroying the duck got a big laugh from me.

Quick question: Why doesn't ROH sell dvds of their pre-2008 shows? They include matches from them on their comp dvds but I'm on a nostalgia kick and want the full shows. -
Totally agree with this. I was totally taken with this. I think it would have been/be a good idea to find a way to show this on USA and hype the hell out of it. I think that anyone not already on board with Bryan would be swayed. Now, I say this as someone who has been a big fan since his indie/foreign runs. When I first discovered indie wrestling via the internet I was almost instantly hooked by his work. Edit: Brie's talking head segments were really good too and I could see her bringing even more female support to Bryan, in a way, if WWE decides to put her onscreen with him more.

If there is any truth to the "return of the six-man tag titles" rumor, I'm in full support of it. I've always enjoyed tag matches but in the past few years I've become a fan of six (or more) man tags. There was a big one on an episode of Raw from (I think) 2011 that really showcased how over they can get with the live crowd and it helps keep the booking from falling into the trap of trading wins on Raw and Smackdown and then having a PPV match without a ton of heat. Monday's episode of Raw had another six-man which was really fun. I really enjoyed the Main Event match between The Shield and the Wyatts, which planted the previous thought in my head. I hope Ambrose was just selling and didn't actually hurt his ribs. My fingers are crossed for War Games at Extreme Rules (although I'm trying not to get too hopeful about it).

The Hall of Fame went well for me last night on the 360 with a few moments of buffering. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the stream evens out here. I really don't want to go to a bar for the PPV.
-
How is the stream working for everyone right now? It's very choppy on my end and I thought it might just be someone else in my home using the internet but I checked and I'm the only one home.

That's tempting me to make the trip from Ohio to Philly. It's at the ECW Arena, right? I've never been that far east so it'd be a cool roadtrip and if the match is anything like the one from last year it would be worth it. -

Hmm? It's more or less a Patrick Bateman gimmick. I know. I'm saying he's doing it poorly. When he's staring at her, it doesn't come across as him thinking about all of the terrible things he wants to do to her, but like he's nervous that he's going to be turned down for a date. I actually got a Ryan Gosling in "Drive" sort of vibe from him, in addition to a Patrick Bateman style gimmick. -
I finally watched the two main events (skipped the rest of the show as I had little interest in it at this point) and I think those two matches alone are worth the purchase of the dvd. With my work schedule I've managed to miss the show and RAW. I also stayed off the net so I went into the show spoiler free. Punk/Lesnar was so good. I don't have a ton of thoughts on it but I loved it as a straight up fight with some wrestling involved. Cena/Bryan is really what I was interested in. I'm a fairly big Cena supporter and have been for a long time (my AIM screenname in high school was Thuganomics87 even) and Bryan is the first guy who I really got interested in when I started branching out into watching indies so to say I was anticipating this is an understatement. Watching it I had so many thoughts but I've waited too long between to remember them all. During the entrances I had genuine chills. The support for Bryan is amazing and is something I never thought I'd see. For everyone wanting Cena to go heel I'd say the first quarter of the match is the closest we're going to get. A lot of his tactics and facial expressions were very heelish. One of the big turning points was (I think) the second two-count after an AA where the camera zoomed in on Cena's look of disbelief. I don't know if there is anyone in recent years that is so good at making these big matches feel like big deals. That superplex spot Bryan did was awesome as was the earlier superplex off the ring steps. Bryan pinning Cena cleanly was so great and a big markout moment for me. That celebration was moving but once it started to go on longer and I noticed HHH was still in the ring I got worried. At this point though I want to see where it goes. I'm sure this won't be the last time Bryan holds the title. He's so over with the live crowds that it would be silly not to.

I try to be positive about TNA usually as I think the wrestling on their shows, for the most part, has been at least good and sometimes approaching great but this is just too much. I'm not sure who had the best reactions. Mr. Kennedy was great, scratching his head like he had a dandruff problem. The quick cuts made it even more over the top. The segment went on for way too long after the reveal. I don't know if there's anything positive I can say about this. I guess the portion before the reveal wasn't terrible but man, that ending made everything suck. -
When I was younger I thought the Gangstas were really cool. As I got older I have really soured on them. I still have an affinity for some ECW garbage wrestling every once in a while, which makes something like this a good deal since there's not enough in a row to wear me out on it. So yeah, it was fun and I don't regret watching it but I doubt it's something I'll revisit. I second the Joey Styles dislike. I had the volume down so I didn't disturb anyone in the house and I'm sure it was much better than hearing his commentary. Again, it's something that I thought was really cool when I was younger but over time it's revealed itself to be pretty annoying.

I just rewatched this and really enjoyed the lariat spot early in the match where Kudo takes one and stays standing and then counters the second. Just kind of a cool counter. Can someone fill me in on the backstory here. I know nothing about Joshi so I came into this match with no context.

Is NJPW the best puro product currently?
RazorbladeKiss87 replied to jpchicago23's topic in Pro Wrestling
Cruising through the .gifs of Day 1 I must say I really like the set up for the German suplex in the Lance Archer vs. Tomohiro Ishii. It was a nice way to make the move believable. EDIT: Also that .gif of the kick from the Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Karl Anderson is so over the top. -
I wouldn't say I'm someone who doesn't "like" joshi, more like uneducated in it and this match really hit the spot for me. I've watched a few Kudo matches on various FMW dvds and have always thought she was enjoyable but never would rank her as a favorite. After this match, I probably still won't go that far but it did raise her a bit in my mind. I've watched this twice and may end up watching it a third time today. I found this to be a really smart brawl. Loss mentions ECW and I'd say that is a fitting comparison, even if, as he says, this is a degree above the typical ECW brawl.

[1997-01-11-WWF-Shotgun Saturday Night] Fondle Me Elmo
RazorbladeKiss87 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Bizarre, to say the least. I really don't have much else to say on this except for adding the fact that a friend of mine looks almost exactly like Sunny when she's wearing the Shotgun Saturday Night shirt and baseball hat.- 14 replies

Just got this in the mail today and I'm already through disc 1. This is the first yearbook I've picked up and will probably be picking the rest up as time and money permits. 1997 is a fitting one to start with because this is the year I got into wrestling. I was 9 or 10 and home alone one night when I ended up flipping to WCW Saturday Night. It was a segment that involved the Giant and I was hooked. There wasn't a gradual progression for me either. The next day I begged my parents to take me to the video store and over the next few weeks I rented every wrestling video they had, while figuring out the tv schedules for every promotion and recording all of it. To this day WCW Saturday Night has a special place in my heart and is my favorite television show from any promotion, no matter the quality of wrestling on any given episode.
